On a more serious note, I had been wondering whether Kim Jong-Il was nearing a place where he'd step down, either due to disability or death. Son of Il-Sung certainly knew how to party hard. And I'm pretty sure the article I read speculating that Jong-Il is diabetic also included a line about no stopping the flow of liquor into his cabinet.

I figured the nuke test was Kim's way of trying to do something meaningful before his reign ended. I'd give some credibility to the story just from a "fits with other events" perspective. No better way to give junior a head start on despotism than making sure his enemies remember just what kind of nutbaggery (and fissile isotopes) they're dealing with.
