| Federal Government Debt Per Household? $546,668And add in another $120,000 or so of personal debt. But, of course, that is debt people affirmatively, personally took on. Stunning numbers. This debt is made up of a mix of obligations, including Social Security, Medicare, and all of the unfunded obligations and guarantees the government makes. Obama isn't responsible for all of this; but he did just increase our obligations by a not-too-shabby twelve percent in just about 140 days. Depending on the interest rate on this debt, it might take something like $25,000 per household, per year, for fifty years, to pay this off. This highlights something. The biggest statist program ever enacted before were Social Security and Medicare. Previously, these programs, while huge, were doable because of favorable demographics -- there had, previously, been a lot of younger workers supporting a relatively small number of older retirees, so the cost per worker was manageable. Because of the big shift in demographics, of course, this is now a very expensive program, with a relatively small number of younger workers supporting a huge number of older retirees. So, the demographic check for FDR's programs are finally coming due in full. At this moment, with the huge obligations imposed by FDR now coming due with a vengeance, the new FDR wants to impose huge new obligations. The demographic bomb that is Social Security and Medicare is scary enough, and hard enough to manage. And yet Obama wants to tax an economy that's already straining to meet previous obligations with fresh ones. Cap and Trade, Slash and Burn: The best case scenario is that Waxman's cap-and-tax system will impose new costs of $1600 per year per household. And what do we get for that? Nothing. At best, assuming this works (and the European experience says it won't) we get a 4% drop in annual CO2 production, which is pretty much nothing at all, even if you subscribe to Al Gore level global warming panic. Bear in mind the alarmists demand something like a 90% reduction in CO2 output in order to "save the earth." I've never heard it suggested that a mere 4% drop would do the trick. In related new, no one making under $250,000 per year will pay "a dime" in new taxes. Obama said so, and I believe him. Because I'm stupid.Comments1

1. Wonder what the average state debt load is, in addition to this.
2. Entitlement programs- they always grow, never shrink. If the costs of medicare/SS had stayed level, and only increased by inflation, we could probably bear that burden. But just as soon as some form of entitlement exists, it must widen its scope of coverage "to be fair" because some group has been left out. But they can NEVER shrink. But at least the majority of the obligations are either indexed to inflation or promises to pay for services at tomorrow's prices. Printing more dough does squat to eliminate it. This may sound crazy, but I'd advise cutting spending on other things, or declaring insolvency so we can start over.

Thing is, Social Security and Medicare created the very demographic shift that will lead to its own implosion. People used to have lots of kids because, in part, those kids would take care of you in your old age. SS and Medicare shifted that burden to the government. You no longer needed kids who would take care of you in your dotage, the government would handle it, so no kids, therefore no workers, therefore not enough kids to fund SS/Medicare.
That wasn't the only reason for the demographic shift, of course. Idiocies like environmentalism and Paul Ehrlich's "The Population Bomb" still lead vast swaths of idiots to believe the planet is overpopulated are other major reasons. One thing is for sure though - the mental disease that is liberalism has led to all but one of them (the only other one being the shift from farming to urban economy). And don't forget the approaching government take over of health care. Once they get their hands on that baby, they'll start reducing costs (cause that's what government is good at) and the money will just roll in. Then who'll be the sucker? Posted by: DrewM. at June 01, 2009 03:11 PM (PLGGU) 14

It's breathtaking how off course we are. I find it very difficult to believe O is bumbling aimlessly around, making all of these mistakes. This is an orchestrated plan to bankrupt our country and render our economy, consitution, and representative republic null and void. This will leave O and the socialist/marxists he surrounds himself with to rule until a revolution is sparked. The true edge of the abyss is O seeking to release himself from the constraints of term limits. When that happens all bets are off. Posted by: The Hammer at June 01, 2009 03:16 PM (YBTwf) 21

Surprisingly, we may not see that. There's a difference between inflation and hyperinflation, in that the latter is a currency event, not solely economic. Instead, I think we're getting massive asset-derived deflation that'll continue for at least the next year or 2. Then inflation, with a possible wage-price spiral if they get linked. "62% of that $546,668 is Bush's fault"
Ummm, not, its not. Most of that money is entitlements - Social Security, Medicaid, etc - programs that were in place when Bush took office. But Obama is working really hard on making a big impact all by himself. Posted by: Jane at June 01, 2009 10:24 PM (gIQ7K) 89
Well, look at it this way: Could your household handle the minmum monthly payment for a $546k debt in addition to whatever expenses your carrying now? No? Then with a majority of American households answering in a similar manner how exactly do we expect to come back from this as a country?
Posted by: LC at June 01, 2009 10:37 PM (Aaoov) 90
Actually, I may owe a little more than the $546k...I had an extra Diet Coke and the order of chicken fingers.

"Obama isn't responsible for all of this; but he did just increase our obligations by a not-too-shabby twelve percent in just about 140 days."
I don't see that. The USA Today article linked by the Atlantic refers to "The 12% rise in red ink in 2008" (presumably, as opposed to 2007). Posted by: Stumbo at June 02, 2009 12:06 AM (dPaNC) 92

I don't give him that much credit. He's a True Believer in the leftist idiocy he espouses. Plus the main ones telling me how brilliant he is are the stupidest people I know. It ain't like he knows better and is doing it anyway. No no. That's giving the clueless twat too much credit. He DOESN'T know better, and he's disabled from knowing better, by all the retarded hippy bullshit he's been raised from birth to believe in. Well, that plus law school. Well now wait! It's not like we just rushed into that! Didn't we give GM $50Bilyoons, first, plus a three-week head start, THEN take it over? So it's not like we're being all hasty and profligate and stuff, so shame on you for suggesting that we are! We may have to audit your taxes if you keep on being troublesome like that.
