Two Soldiers Shot Outside Of Recruiting Station...1 Dead, 1 Seriously Injured

Authorities say the incident occurred around 10:00 a.m. at a U.S. Army Navy Career Center inside the Ashley Square Shopping Center at 9112 North Rodney Parham Road. According to Lt. Terry Hastings with the Little Rock Police Department, two enlisted soldiers standing outside the office were hit when the unidentified suspect drove up and began shooting.
...According to Army Lt. Col. Thomas F. Artis, the two victims were not recruiters, but part of a recruiting program called "Hometown Recruiting Assistance." Artis says recruiters use soldiers to tell their stories and talk to potential recruits while they are visiting or based back in their home region.

Both soldiers were combat vets*. Prayers for them and their families.

It may be to early for this but if the scumbag they have in custody turns out to be part of the anti-war crowd, will the press connect him with that movement the way they are with the guy arrested for killing Tiller? Yeah, neither do I.

More on the soldiers, they were not combat vets.

Lt. Col. Thomas F. Artis of the Oklahoma City Recruiting Battalion, which oversees the Little Rock office, said the victims had just completed basic training and were not regular recruiters. He said they were serving two weeks in the Little Rock office.
As part of the Hometown Recruiting Assistance Program, the soldiers were sent to "talk to friends, folks in the local area. They can show the example, 'Here's where I was, and here is where I am,'" Artis said.
Artis said neither of the soldiers had been deployed for combat.

I haven't seen anything more on the suspect.

LITTLE ROCK, Ark. – One Army recruiter was killed Monday and a second was wounded in a shooting at a recruiting office, and a suspect was arrested, police said.

Police Lt. Terry Hastings said the recruiter was shot when a man in a black SUV opened fire on the office in west Little Rock at about 10:30 a.m.

The vehicle was stopped on Interstate 630 a short time later and a suspect was taken into custody. Hastings said the suspect pulled over and surrendered without incident.

Police said they found an assault rifle in the vehicle.

Hastings said he did not know whether the recruiting office was specifically targeted or was randomly chosen.

Hastings said shortly after noon that investigators had not yet questioned the suspect and that police were still processing evidence from the crime scene.

As a precaution, police also called in a bomb squad because there were packages in the SUV. Hastings said a robot would open the packages.

Authorities did not immediately identify either the victims or the suspect.

Aside from hate crime statutes, most states have more severe punishments for attacks on police, firemen, bus drivers, and other public servants. I don't know of any that cover the military, however.

17 This is something the DHS should be looking at instead of placing our military on a DHS watch list! I have read many articles stating our military are often in danger due to the radicalization of the Left anti-war crowd. I have read where military members have been strongly advised not to wear any military clothing unless required out in public because of so many being threatened.

Remember, as of late a killing like this does not get the same treatment as those who are killed because they are gay or non-White. When Congressional members wanted to protect crimes against our military members here at home, the Dems shut that down.

I never spent any time as a recruiter but if this happened again and I were, the odds of losing my career (and almost certainly my Freedom) in the name of self-defense would be a risk I'd seriously have to consider. Apparently not. Actually, if the other branches of the military are anything like the Navy, this is something people do one of two times: right after boot camp, or between the end of their job training and their first deployment. Wait too much longer than that and they don't have many friends around back home that might be inclined to follow their path.

Granted, I'm sure a lot of people on the far-left still view those two as being only a few steps from pure evil simply for putting on the uniform.

More examples of violence at recruiting centers:

1) Violence and arrests in Milwaukee.

2) Violence and arrests in the Twin Cities area. This is an indymedia link who had a role in organizing this day. Their stated objective was to forcibly block the recruiting station.

3) Forcibly blocking the recruiting station in Berkley.

Yeah, this is extremism. It is also common. There are many other examples on google, but I don't have time to link stuff forever. I don't understand why it is hard to deduce that this was politically motivated.

This isn't a random outlier, like the abortion-doctor murder yesterday. This type of violent resistance is common. For example, if you have ever gone to a prayer group or protest in front of an abortion clinic, the mere thought of blocking entrance to it will get you kicked out by the organizers. Those on the left are not nearly as scrupulous.

98 Here is what I will speculate: The guy was turned down (justifiably) for enlistment due to his record of psycological problems, In a fit of psychotic rage, he decided to get revenge for his persecution. He obviously had no well thought out plan for escape, and did not give the cops any trouble when they stopped him. He was acting alone, and after sating his anger realized the game was up. Not wanting to get weighted down with lead (like the guy who shot Gwatney) he pulled over when the cops got on his tail. If he is lucky, he will spend the rest of his life in a mental institution. If he can't convince the judge he is crazy, he will be tried and executed.

I am just saying that given the history of past violence at recruiting centers and their focus on these centers, this seems like the most likely explanation. Which does not even make it more than a 50% likelyhood or anything like that. It just means that it seems more likely than any other single explanation.

You make a good point, this conversation has degenerated into a game of one-up-manship (as is quite common in this type format) and I certainly had a part in that. And while I don't think I actually even have an "ilk", the one thing I did want to "bring to the party" is that this jumping to conclusions, whether from the right wing or the left, gets none of us closer to where we need to be. Families have suffered a great loss and the none of us need to be using their loss to assign blame or make political points (at least not yet).

I was being more than slightly fatuous, mike. To make a half-hearted attempt at legitimatizing the suggestion, though, the military tends conservative, and the Iraq and Afghanistan wars are generally seen as Republican creations by libs; striking at the military might be seen as a strike at conservatives in some twisted sense. As to why choose military targets over pro-lifers? IF it was indeed the intent to get a little retribution, perhaps the fact that recruiting stations are ubiquitous and much more numerous (i.e., accessible) than pro-life offices may have had something to do with it. Or the fact that few pro-life advocates have notoriety equal to Dr. Tiller's (excepting people like the Pope, I guess).

All of this follows from a slightly ridiculous suggestion, though. I have no idea of what the gunman was thinking, and I'm not sure I want to know. I have lots of ideas I think are stupid, yet I invariably put them in the public forum with a faint Walter Mitty-like hope that someone else will realize I invented the intellectual equivalent of the wheel. All that really happens is that I am mildy embarrassed while consternating and confusing others. I really need to learn to filter better.
