| Bloomberg; Investor Predicts "Hyperinflation"I haven't heard of Marc Faber before, but he seems legitimate. Not saying he's the be-all end-all -- again, never heard of him -- but he's not just some crank that somehow conned Bloomberg into quoting him. At any rate, he says he's sure hyperinflation is coming. The U.S. economy will enter “hyperinflation” approaching the levels in Zimbabwe because the Federal Reserve will be reluctant to raise interest rates, investor Marc Faber said. Prices may increase at rates “close to” Zimbabwe’s gains, Faber said in an interview with Bloomberg Television in Hong Kong. Zimbabwe’s inflation rate reached 231 million percent in July, the last annual rate published by the statistics office. “I am 100 percent sure that the U.S. will go into hyperinflation,” Faber said. “The problem with government debt growing so much is that when the time will come and the Fed should increase interest rates, they will be very reluctant to do so and so inflation will start to accelerate.”Seems unlikely to me. But what do I know. Oh: He wrote this. Pretty funny. The federal government is sending each of us a $600 rebate. If we spend that money at Wal-Mart, the money goes to China. Comments1

Seems inevitable that we will see it to some extent. 231million percent seems rather high though

Hyperinflation seems unlikely to me, too, but it's small consolation. 100% per year, which I think is a real possibility, is going to be bad enough.

I'm pretty sure as well. It's inevitable when you're printing insane amounts of money, distributing an ever increasing value of the currency over a relatively static amount of wealth.
So you say: "But Qwinn, let's say they double the money supply. That means each dollar should be worth half of what it was before. That sucks, but it's not -hyper-inflation." I respond: Sure, but what will they do when they double the money supply, and find out that due to its devaluation, it didn't suffice to actually pay the debt that they printed it for in the first place? Right. Print more money. And more. Infinite spiral. Qwinn Posted by: Qwinn at May 28, 2009 02:39 PM (/y1J0) 7

You people who think there is any future for the USA are simply delusional. A trillion dollars for the CRA/Redlining catastrophe. A trillion dollars for a nonsense "stimulus" package. A trillion dollars per year for "Cap-N-Trade". Three or four trillion dollars per year for socialized medicine. The looming retirement, in 2011, of the Caucasian Baby Boomers, who failed to breed at replacement rate fertility, and who will cost the gubmint $27,289 per senior per year. Low-IQ third world minorities, who constitute almost half of all children in the USA, and who will soon constitute a majority of all people in the USA, and who, because of their low IQs, necesarily cost the gubmint $22,449 per household per year. I agree with Hoodlumman, however, I think that a lot of the worth of the dollar is due to the "respect" it gets overseas; that it's a franc franca for international trade. It's possible that if that even begins to change, it will set in motion some very heavy dominoes. Money today isn't backed by anything except for respect. If a stampede away from the dollar starts, overseas businesses, governments, and investors are not going to want to be the last one holding a bag of worthless money.

My gut and observations on what we're doing to the money supply tell me it's going to be pretty damn bad, but like Zimbabwe? I'm pretty sure the country would break up before that happens. Our GDP is roughly $14 trillion, give or take. At the beginning of last year, our national debt was $4.5 trillion. Since then: * Spending $800 billion (IIRC - that could be high) on stimulus last year * Backing Fannie and Freddie's worthless debts, meaning another $5 trillion in direct debt. * Spending around $1 trillion in TARP money. * Printing $2 trillion to give to God knows who last fall. * Another $2 trillion "stimulus bill" * General bailouts to auto companies and other businesses of about $1 trillion That basically doubles out entire GDP in new debt. Then there are $2 trillion deficits PER YEAR for the next 10 years, without any additional bailouts, stimulus, or spending. Then, there are our unfunded liabilities: literally hundreds of trillions to Social Security, Medicare, and Medicaid which begin coming due in 2010. How are we not looking at hyperinflation? Not Zimbabwe, but certainly Weimer, methinks. Unless O! decides to get all punitive and redistributionist with his taxation and environmental policies, and then we seriously are looking at Zimbabwe. Their high inflation is, at least in part, from the seizures against and sacrificed productivity of their white minority. If they try a similar plan here (and there were rumblings in the primary), then all bets are off. Posted by: Ella at May 28, 2009 03:06 PM (huf8h) 38
"doubles out" makes no sense. That should be "equals our GDP in new debt."

I would add a little note that Faber left out; many nations have gone through hyperinflation before, but that was always in the context of having stable, larger currencies around to use and welathy nations to help reinflate them (as the US has done for many). The US dollar is far too large for anything of the sort. When the US dollar goes, it takes everything else with it, and we are far too large to be bailed out by anyone. The US dollar is the trade and reserve currency of the world, while the US economy is the economic engine of the world. When all that comes to a stop, there are no white knights left to help soften the fall. It becomes a freefall into a bottomless pit.
The US dollar imploding would be something that this world has never seen, because of the size and scope of the dollar and the dependence of the rest of the world on us. This is where things get really ugly. Posted by: progressoverpeace at May 28, 2009 03:29 PM (A46hP) Posted by: andycanuck at May 28, 2009 03:30 PM (MB+jN) 51

Good thing I have my stockpile of Montana Militia Goldnotes, 1994 issue. You kids probably don't remember the heady days of 1994, when porn still meant Penthouse. But there were fears abounding after the Waco standoff and Ruby Ridge assassination of the jackbooted thuggery of Louis "World B." Freeh and Janet "Loosest Slots in" Reno. Blue-helmeted occupiers, FINCEN tracking our financial transactions, retroactive taxes, and plastic strips in our cash all played into my anxieties, which were salved (for a time) by the discovery of Rush and the ascendancy of Newt. Ultimately, we staved off leftist nincompoopery. I expect significant inflation, but I don't believe we're headed toward a Weimar/Mugabe styled monetary abomination. Hey, we have Bernanke at the helm! Aren't you reassured?! Posted by: Big Fat Meanie at May 28, 2009 03:41 PM (XoYY8) 57
We're all gonna die!!! Ahh. There - that's out of the way. Feels good. There will be devaluation of currency at some point. How much is hard to say - there's no effective predictive formula. In addition to the new money printing, the dollar has been artificially maintained at a high value for a long time, in spite of a massive trade imbalance. The dollar has to drop as a result of that problem. If that had been allowed to happen naturally the manufacturing base would not have suffered so much in recent years, thus averting some of this painful change. So, no doubt the dollar will sink, probably quite a bit. However, we do NOT have a static amount of goods. We're more productive every year. We have enormous industrial capacity sitting around idle, and could easily expand it. We still make a lot of stuff, despite the losses to low-cost-countries. Lean initiatives have driven huge amounts of waste out of our systems, and freed up significant labor for other purposes. Also, not all the cash that is printed is is circulation. The Chinese and many others are sitting on piles of it, not spending it. It's not the amount of dollars per volume of goods - it's the amount of dollars circulating. Money sitting in a heap somewhere isn't participating in the economic equasion in the same way as money being spent. In any case, Europe did have hyperinflation for a while. Lots of bad stuff happened. And life went on. We're not likely to have starvation or all become homeless bums living under bridges. Let's get a grip. Maybe we will have issues with slum uprisings, but frankly that may prove to be the excuse we need to take care of another festering problem... Removing the underclass is a fine way to cut costs for the State.

My only consolation is that Barry is going to take down a lot of other countries in the wake of our demise. According to the WSJ, "Caribbean nations say they will be the economic victims of President Obama's proposals to collect more taxes on the offshore transactions of U.S. individuals and corporations...The Caribbean officials said their tourism sector could take a hit from legislation aimed at taxing offshore activity" as "U.S. execs and holders of offshore accounts make regular visits to meet with island lawyers and accountants and play golf, dine and shop when they do... A common theme from opponents of Democratic proposals on tax havens is that the offshore activities of U.S. businesses aren't illegal, and in some cases were designed by Congress to help companies lower their tax burden." So I guess Ogabe is screwing everyone in his path.

The Treasury auctioned off 100 billion this week and the Federal Reserve took a chunk (monetized the debt) of the 2-year auction. Long term rates went to 3.75% on the 10-year with a sharper yield curve resulting. There's another 100 billion auction next week and 7 or 8 more of the same before September. Think about that. I think the Fed will be buying even more on orders to keep the interest rate low. The backlash hopefully will be that buyers will refuse to fund the debt unless interest rates are jacked higher (T-notes bought at auction for many less dollars than the Fed wants). There will come a point when buyers if they see inflation beginning will simply refuse to buy at anything close to the rates the Treasury wants. In that case, the Government has a choice to make. Continue issuing debt that the Fed buys and monetizes or sack up and let the interest rates go wherever they need to. The only sane course is the latter since it puts the creditors in control and provides some security and sanity to the whole process. This scenario will also help control inflation to some degree but at the cost of starving cash for business and mortgages and government's spending. With the current budgets, these large auctions will be occurring forever since there is no way to ever run a surplus because debt service will approach GNP at some point. Also the future budget numbers we're seeing now don't even consider the probable net additional expenditures by the government for cap and trade regulation and healthcare among other things, nor all the off-balance sheet governmental liabilities like pension guarantees, warranties, and assumed mortgages. Things are likely much worse than they seem. That the Administration would even consider taking on healthcare for the uninsured and energy policy with what's facing them is just insane. This is why governments should always run surpluses in good times to provide a cushion for bad times. They used to do this. Not any longer.

A big problem is we have Barry at the helm ... and the evil Rahm Emanuel ... who believes in taking advantage of a (manufactured) crisis to promote his Marxist state. He is the engineer of the required service to state for children and/or college kids. That was even in the bill in congress, but the mandatory part was removed (for now) before it went to the senate.
And the 52% still haven't figured out the politicians and money men are content with raping and pillaging America ... they still believe the unicorn is on the way, and Barry has the biggest heart in the world. Good gawd ... and some haven't figured out that economic engineering has been a dismal failure ... but then it seems more designed to transfer assets to the powerful, not to save the nation. The 52% are drinking the grape koolaid, and fully expect they'll have nirvana on the other side. The "blame Bush, I inherited this" mantra will carry Barry for another year ... maybe ... The economic engineering is working perfectly. Obama and Emanuel want to break the economy and return America to the 1930's, a time when people thought working for federal government works programs like the WPA was a Godsend. They want us eating out of their hands and liking it.Personally, I'm stockpiling food. And ammo. If I could find it. Rockhead, the economy is a very complex open system so there isn't a way to predict with total certainty what will happen in most cases. The quants can do a pretty fair job of predicting the overall direction of change a good portion of the time, but predicting the magnitude of the change is still very difficult. It also doesn't matter a lot what happens to GNP as it cannot likely grow fast enough to overcome the debt load that'll accrue from the future budgets with deficits as large as they are. Remember the proposed budgets already assume significant positive growth. If that growth isn't forthcoming, the deficits will be even higher than projected all other things remaining unchanged. This is why it is imperative that the government decrease the rate of expenditure increases and I would argue there shouldn't be any increases at all until things get back under control.

laddy,
this is what is totally freaking out the traders. Most of the time they can predict, pretty reliably what may happen and make their trades accordingly. Lately, they aren't sure what is going on. the market sort of looks like apple stock looked all of last year. Posted by: muffy at May 28, 2009 04:57 PM (zplc6) 76

That's a big thing, Barry is doing such wild things, that it is hard for business to feel good about investing in growth. Mistreating bondholders by using his heavy hand, Obama has shown no investment is safe ... HE will overrule, and YOU must sacrifice, if he so decrees. Of course the large tax increases to come and dollar problems compound the uncertainty. And Barry seems to want uncertainty, to advance his agenda ... no oil or nuke plant jobs, only fairy tale wind power and solar panels. Posted by: bill at May 28, 2009 05:03 PM (ApUxC) 78

Many Intel processors (including the newest Core i7) were developed in Israel, not sure if they're manufactured there though, but then you still have all the other components... The quants can do a pretty fair job of predicting the overall direction of change a good portion of the time, but predicting the magnitude of the change is still very difficult. Well the guys who did predict the overall direction in 2006 are saying now predicting Hyperinflation. If you are going to listen to predictions then it is important to listen to folks who have already managed to do it well. Lots of folks predicted this implosion...but they are not listened to since they are not Keynesian economists. The reason we got screwed and will continue to be screwed is mainstream economists on both the left and right are Keynesian...and they are so because they are the only ones that justify huge goverrnment expansion. Ace of Spades is great but not for economics because they still follow those folks who had no idea this was going to happen. There will be inflation, but hyper....? Who knows. Depends on if we can rein in Barry in 2010. Inflation is the politician's buddy--it can minimize their profligate spending by cheapening the value of the debt.
After the Carter Reign or Torpor, interest rates were at 18%, so get into money market accounts. And don't buy a house--my mortgage was 11.75% in 1981. (Yes, I have refi-ed since then.) Posted by: PJ at May 28, 2009 08:42 PM (oUBw8) 85

Hyperinflation at Zimbabwe's levels doubtful. But how about inflation of ten-fifteen per cent a year for a decade? Likely given the bankruptcy of several decades of Dhimmicrats who kept adding on social spending without insuring corrective measures were installed. Does anyone believe Social Security will be there for them in ten years? Medicare? How are Obama's debts going to be paid?
Simple inflate the economy. In seven years at 10% inflation you half the debt. At 15% it takes about five years. Do it for a decade and you've almost corrected the problem unless you keep spending like Obamanazis. Then you really start increasing the printing of fiat currency. And the economy collapses and people utilize a black market system to evade taxes and the government.
If you believe that we aren't due for severe inflation just keep hoping. If you were around for the seventies with the Nixon-Ford-Carter clown economy you know how bad it can get. And the Obamanazis promise to far surpass the accomplishments of Carter and Nixon. And even a Reagan won't be able to restore a confidence and trust that Obama has destroyed.
You can only shred the Constitution once. Obama seems to be shredding the shreds.

Though it's not something with any consistency, one definition of "hyperinflation" is anything over 100% for a few years. Some people don't realize they actually do see hyperinflation on the horizon, but not at the level of Zimbabwe. Zimbabwe could be termed superduperhyperinflation

The Japanese had pretty much the same set of problems we have now, but theirs started 19 years ago. Inflation is currently zero, has been for years. The hyperinflationists have to explain that. None have.
Posted by: Steve at May 29, 2009 11:34 AM (Y1tHE) 93
So you're saying that in two decades, Japan finally brought their high inflation and monetary problems under control? Good to know, bet we can do it faster - if we get the leftists out of power.

The Japanese never ran their printing presses as if they were making monopoly money nor engage in deficit spending the way Obama is. There is no comparison between Japnese policies of the 80-90s and Obamas.
I suggest you review Hungary after WWII and the Weimar republic and then look at what Obama is doing. Anyone who doubts very high inflation is an idiot. And just remember this, 5 years of high inflation will double your income probably placing you in the top fifth of current tax payers while your buying power will decline. All U.S. debt is held by foreigners. Obama is already printing fiat money. Money worth less = higher debt & less ability to pay = nobody lending any more. Whoever owns your debt, owns you. China is converting $US debt into actual petroleum (trading US IOU's for it). Why? The problem is already too big to recover from. The Greenback is finished & if you survive the civil disorder, the Amero will be your new currency & the Saudi's, Chinese & Brazil will own your asses. Grim doesn't even begin to describe what's coming SOON. I suggest prayer... Posted by: Salamantits at June 01, 2009 09:33 PM (Vz1WE) 97

Almost all the items like these that are sold on the internet are imitations of the real ones. If you want to purchase original watches, handbags, or jewelries, their outlets are your choice. But some imitations are high quality, for example, two years ago, i bought a Breitling replica watch from a website, now this watch is still working well.
