| North Korea Says It No Longer Considers Itself Bound By Terms Of ArmisticeCan things get worse in Korea? Yes, yes they can. North Korea's military says it considers South Korea's participation in a U.S.-led program to intercept ships suspected of spreading weapons of mass destruction tantamount to a declaration of war against the North. The communist North's military said in a statement Wednesday that it will respond with "immediate, strong military measures" if the South actually stops and searches any North Korean ships under the Proliferation Security Initiative. This follows other North Korean provocations in the wake of response to their nuke test. North Korea, facing international sanction for its nuclear test this week, has restarted a plant that makes bomb-grade plutonium, a South Korean newspaper reported on Wednesday. Pyongyang also appeared to have fired off a third short-range missile late on Tuesday after it added to tensions with a launch of two others earlier in the day, the South's Yonhap news agency quoted a unnamed government source as saying. The immediate cause of the North's threats is the South's decision to join the US founded Proliferation Security Initiative. South Korea had long resisted U.S. pressure to join the Proliferation Security Initiative (PSI), which was created in 2003 by President George W. Bush and includes more than 90 countries that have agreed to stop and inspect suspicious cargo on sea and land. Seoul was reluctant to rile North Korea, but North Korea's second nuclear test nudged Seoul Korea to change its policy. ..."Inter-Korean relations have hit rock bottom," said Yun Duk-min, professor of international politics at the Institute of Foreign Affairs and National Security, a government think tank in Seoul. "So it is the right thing to join PSI, even if North Korea reacts with resistance."Who is going to blink? When a Crazy Man With A Gun Tells You He's Going to Shoot You, The Smart Move is to Act as Though He Really Will Do it [Gabe]: Look, if we had taken Hitler at his word in the early 1930s, WWII and the Holocaust would never have happened. But instead of acting as though he really meant what he said, the European Powers claimed that he was really just being belligerent to score political points. This holds true for North Korea today. "Oh," they scoff, "Kim is just trying to score more loot from China and lower sanctions from the U.N. He's not really a threat to anyone; half his country is starving. Besides, North Korea makes threats all the time." Only, the half of his country that isn't starving is the military. And he has used his loot to build devastating weapons. And he doesn't have anyone left to score political points off of. Kim is not running for reelection. He doesn't have to find seats in a parliament or consolidate power. He's got nowhere to go but out and down the peninsula. With all the demonstrations over the past few days he's expending his military resources faster than anything we've ever seen. Would he really do it? Kim may well believe that with a nuclear deterrent he can force South Korea to integrate on his terms. Those missiles can't reach the U.S., but they can reach Japan. He obviously thinks that there is something to be gained from all this. Declaring the Armistice over with a phone call rather than a missile is a good sign. But there's a reason he's doing this now and not six months ago. President Obama is going to issue a statement in the morning with vague reassurance about how seriously he takes the situation and then he's going to defer to the UNSC's bland statement of condemnation. Kim knows this. In fact, it's the reason he's doing this now. Obama's going to vote "present" on this one. If we give in, it means the end of sanctions. If we give in, it means the end of the nuclear talks (which, frankly, wouldn't be much of a loss). But we have to consider the likelihood that he's not just doing this to get better terms and that he might actually intend to go to war. Do we take him at his word? And if we do, does that mean we back down while he develops more nuclear weapons and sells the technology to our enemies? CommentsPosted by: Rocks at May 26, 2009 11:49 PM (3RHzM) 2
The problem for the NOrks is that their primary foreign exchange earnings use those vessels (missiles, drugs, counterfeit currency, etc.) This goes right at the leaderships pocketbooks.

Good point Gabe. One has to wonder, does Clinton do anything if he was president when Saddam invaded Kuwait? Maybe, but I doubt it.
Obama made clear in his address to the Naval Academy that he will not send our army to war unless it's absolutely necessary. He is staying the course in Iraq and Afghanistan because it's politically expedient to do so. It's pretty clear he would never have gone into either place had he been in charge at the time and both have a far more direct impact on our national security than Korea does. Just as with Iraq, we haven't settled the Korean War, only declared a cease-fire. Granted a 54 year old cease fire has allowed the South Koreans the chance to become a wealthy democracy, while the North has languished (how many of us have seen that google earth night shot of the Korean peninsula, with the South's large cities all lit up and the North absolutely black.) Here's the problem. Seoul, South Korea, is just across the border, and the Norks have several thousand short range missles aimed at the city as a deterrent to attack. It is doubtful that we could muster up enough equipment to hit all the potential mobile launcher sites in a quick or quiet manner, if we even have it to spare at this point. Past that missle deterrent, the Norks would collapse as quickly as Iraq's supposedly formidable army, with one horrible exception...we'd actually have to kill them all. He's sitting on top of a kingdom, rich, powerful and, like his father, he's not going to do anything to mess with that. Why is he dicking around with nukes? Because he can, that's why. There is indeed a heat island effect which is statistically removed when estimating global warming. There is also no evidence that it biases the historical record of the temperature TREND. Urban and rural trends are similar.

It would be a mistake to underestimate the obsession passed down from father to son. Kim Il-Sung despised the US for defending South Korea, and felt bitterly betrayed by Stalin and even Mao who put almost three quarters of a million troops in their last major offensive but could not drive us south again.
Also, whatever MacArthur's admonitions became after the Chinese intervened, his actions up to their entry were recklessly naive, and we paid a terrible cost for them. The Norks are China's crazy-ass pit bull in the region, one they barely control but they do control it. I'm guessing this is the first hard probe by the Chinese against the Obama administration. They want Taiwan. That's a major Chinese goal. So, this is kind of a diplomatic magic trick. A distraction, to use BO's favorite word. With North Korea seriously threatening two key American allies, South Korea and Japan, and perhaps even going to war, now would be a good time to press Taiwan and see just what the US commitment is. They also hold an economic hammer now might also be a good time to wield it. Any reading of BO's past behavior tells you how this will play out. He'll vote present and let our allies dangle. This also plays into his world-view. He wants a "multi-polar world" with a weakened US influence. Just read his past comments. Both South Korea and Japan will have to appeal to China once BO betrays them. Taiwan's then ripe for plucking. China's ascension to main Pacific power is complete. This same scenario will also play out in Eastern Europe, the Middle East, and possibly, South America. Perhaps all at the same time or in close succession. As per BO's speech the other day, none of these will be "necessary wars". The key time period is right now as to how things will go. Gird your loins. The whole world recoils at the idea of war in Korea, but if we are ever going to stop this, we must stop them before they have the ability to hit us directly. It would be a terrible calamity to see Korea in flames again, but we must remember that it will be Koreans who will pay the real price, not us. If we wait long enough it will be us. Now is the time for action. It is sad that Kim judges quite correctly the weakness of our leadership right now and is recklessly taking advantage. If you think the North is dangerous now, just wait ... Posted by: 7HEAVENS at May 27, 2009 08:08 AM (WtN1l) 115

My experience in the Land of Not Quite Right was at Kunsan AB, Korea, home of the Wolf Pack. I was there in 2000, when Madeline Nottoobright was clinging flutes of Kool Aid with the Great Pornographer. Even then, our preparedness was exceptional. My understanding was that the Norks had enough food and fuel to push south on a 3-day march, which would then sputter and we would be in the position to counterattack with ground and close air forces. That being said, perhaps the nukes would be employed to take out the ports of entry on the peninsula for reinforcements from Okinawa.

I think it is brazenly unfair to say RoK is lulled to sleep or "not overly concerned". If they were sleeping and did not take Kim's threats seriously, they would not have fully joined PSI in response to Kim's second nuke test. If they did not take it seriously, they wouldn't be deploying ships into the western sea to block any attempted attacks from the DPRK there (and to also aid in PSI operations).
And because they take this seriously, since they're the one's most likely to take the brunt of the attack, they're taking some actual preparatory actions, along with trying to get the UN and some other countries to do what they're actually supposed to be doing to stymie DPRK. Of course the UN will do jack shit, like they've done since 1953, but if you're President Lee you have to at least TRY to get them to do something. I grew up in South Korea (Seoul and Pusan), went to school there, and as a kid spoke passable Korean. (All gone now, I'm afraid.) The South Koreans are calm because they are in denial. They also have Stockholm syndrome, and have done for a very long time. You will meet many, many young Koreans who have a half-formed idea that the US went to war in Korea because we wanted the country for ourselves, and that the US is what is keeping the brothers of the North and the South apart. The older generation who remember the war, not so much. But I don't take the South Korean shrug as a good thing, and you shouldn't either. There are significant elements in Korean government and society that are essentially quislings, either because they believe in the superiority of their ethnicity (think the Japanese and the Chinese are proud of their blood? wait until you talk to Koreans) or because they've been bought, or because they want to be bought, and expect to be in power after "reunification," whatever hell-born form that takes. 'North Vietnam"? A phoney temporary division that Ho accepted after being promised Vietname wide elections. They never came because Eisenhower knew Ho would have won 80% of the vote.
The History Place (same stuff at many other sites)
July 21, 1954 - The Geneva Accords divide Vietnam in half at the 17th parallel, with Ho Chi Minh's Communists ceded the North, while Bao Dai's regime is granted the South. The accords also provide for elections to be held in all of Vietnam within two years to reunify the country. The U.S. opposes the unifying elections, fearing a likely victory by Ho Chi Minh.
Another American blow for democracy....

China can probably stop Kim Jong Il’s belligerence if it wants to, but I bet it’s using North Korea to test Obama’s response, especially since Bejiing is engaging in a military buildup of its own. What now, Barack “negotiate without preconditions” Obama? More posturing? More deferring to the U.N.? The NOrks can't go to war, they can only threaten war. I doubt the NOrks are "testing" Obama, they are more likely reshuffling their internal politics looking forwards to a succession struggle.
They may be feeling out the One to see what bribes they can get for their belligerence, but they should have called some guys in Chicago - would have been cheaper. We did find a sensitive spot with the searching of their smuggling fleet - that cuts into their cash. Of course the kid may want to go out with a bang. The point in hinting that we wouldn't mind if China took over North Korea isn't that we want them to do so, but that KJI would realize he does have something to lose. Now, he's probably already pretty keen to stay in China's good graces, so it might not give him anything to fear. China may be just fine with all he's been doing. I don't know. North Korean threats are empty. They don't have the muscle to do anything. Not only are their people starving, but their army is undernourished to the point that regular army units can not do physical exercises for the full amount of time. Even the special forces, which are an oversized portion of the North Korean military, are affected for the worse. North Korea can not win a war with the South, or really anybody. I was one of the guys sitting in one of the jets that would deliver a devastating response to the North in the event of an invasion. The North could seriously wound the South, but any war they start would consume them and they know it. The North has ten thousand artillery tubes pointed at Seoul, which holds half the population of South Korea. Millions might die should the North open fire but within a week of that war, North Korea would cease to exist. We would extinguish what there is of North Korea from the air. That would mean the end of cognac, Swedish hookers, and the good life for Kim Jong Il and that's the last thing he wants. The few hundred families in Pyongyang who run North Korea don't want a war either. In the last Korean War we leveled their cities and they are terrified of that happenning again, so terrified they've spent the last half century burrowing into the Earth to hide all their facilities. At the end of all that, the display of our smart bombs in Iraq demonstrated their effort was futile. North Korea threatens because threats are all they have left and threats have worked so well in the past. The threats will work this time, too, because Obama not only doesn't know squat about foreign policy, but what he does know is wrong. He's an empty suit and the North Koreans know it. When the first response to North Korean nuke tests from the US is a stern statement that we'll file a complaint with the UN, the North Koreans probably laughed, knowing from such a feeble response they've won this engagement. Kim's response to a UN complaint is probably, "Cognac for everyone!" Posted by: Tantor at May 27, 2009 11:27 AM (SWvPS) 209

Americans are all evil. If it weren't for the glorious forces of progressivism the world would be mired in racism, hatred and bigotry. Brave progressives such as myself, annointed by God (Obama himself) have been given the divine power to attack all who do not meet our standards by virtue of my gravity bending intellect, incredible education (several degrees purchased from the back of soap boxes), and my vast superiority in morality based on mind altering mushrooms. Notice how I have run rings around you while evading and skillfully altering facts to suit my narrative? Why I follow the Biden-Obama school of Newspeak where facts mean what I choose them to mean. Hanoi was a paradise that sent its agents to correct the running dogs of Wall Street by the hundreds of thousands just as comrade Stalin killed all those evil Ukranian peasants who wouldn't tow the line. They got what they deserve.
Did I mention I love Saddam's creative use of shredders or Castro's brillance in bringing prosperity to Cuba, Wouldn't we all be better if we embraced Mugabe and modelled our socities' on Zimbabwe? "Define imperialism"
Extending a nation's authority by a) territorial acquisition or b) by the establishment of economic and political hegemony over other nations.
Aiding in the overthrow of democratically elected foreign leaders (Moussadegh, Allende, Lumumba) or denying a democratic vote (Vietnam) would seem to qualify*

The LEADER of the US, Eisenhower, actually admits in his memoirs that he didn't want Vietnamese elections because Ho would have won. He saw to it that the elections didn't occur.
Harrumph all you want peabrains...this is a clear case of imperialism.
We also have plenty of evidence that the US aided in the overthrow of the democratically elected leader of Chile, Allende. Another example that clearly falls under the definition of imperialism. There are plenty of other cases - Moussadegh, Lumumba etc.

If you take a step back and look at the entire scope of the situation, the President has to sit down, treat this as a chess game, what is going to happen in order once this starts. What will the effects of NK tossing a nuke on japan, will china step up to the US, will IRAN just take advantage and jump in. Now once the war starts and all hell breaks out, forget about the trade in that region, Oil and all the refuges to deal with running into china, Russia and the neighbor countries. The financial situation on these countries to rebuild will be incredible. just under 50 million people will be displaced in this tight area. I personally think we are quietly getting the subs into place, lining up the ducks and to avoid NK killing Japan and SK, there will be one hell of a pre-emptive strike soon. We can not allow NK to toss the first ball, cause if he just got just 1 nuke out and that was it, several million are going to die. I just believe once again, we are now lining up the ducks asap, and quietly keeping the tone down, media coverage is being told to keep it down as well, so NK does not panic, we need to strike 1st. Have anyone noticed at all for the 1st time, media coverage has been fairly light, its not "headlines" just the top news. I think this is a sign of US Mil organization to keep NK from striking 1st.
