| Breaking: Obama Says US Out Of MoneyGee, I wonder what his first clue was? But that doesn't mean the government shouldn't take over the rest of the health care system.SCULLY: You know the numbers, $1.7 trillion debt, a national deficit of $11 trillion. At what point do we run out of money? OBAMA: Well, we are out of money now. We are operating in deep deficits, not caused by any decisions we've made on health care so far. This is a consequence of the crisis that we've seen and in fact our failure to make some good decisions on health care over the last several decades. So we've got a short-term problem, which is we had to spend a lot of money to salvage our financial system, we had to deal with the auto companies, a huge recession which drains tax revenue at the same time it's putting more pressure on governments to provide unemployment insurance or make sure that food stamps are available for people who have been laid off. So we have a short-term problem and we also have a long-term problem. The short-term problem is dwarfed by the long-term problem. And the long-term problem is Medicaid and Medicare. If we don't reduce long-term health care inflation substantially, we can't get control of the deficit.Medicare is going to be broke in 2018, so naturally the only sane thing to do is put the government on the hook for even more liabilities. This whole idea that we can't get cost under control unless the government controls every thing presupposes that this is an area where the government has any competency at all. Where exactly is the proof of that? The only way the government will be able to even pretend to control costs will be by rationing health care. Now if you are about spreading the wealth around, that's a feature, not a bug. On the upside, Obama says he isn't on board with bailing out California and other states. On the downside, we all know that everything he says comes with an expiration date. Comments1
Obama makes my brain bleed. I've disagreed with presidents over the years, but there has NEVER been one who I wanted to just scream in his face "what the ever living fuck is wrong with you?!?"

BO says "We're out of money." Huh? Really? I mean, who would've thought spending money like crack-addicted monkey sailors on leave at Crack-Banana-Hooker Island would lead to a lack of funds? Fortunately, BO's going to save us money that we don't have by spending more money we don't have on his new government run healthcare plan because the government run healthcare plans Medicare and Medicaid are going broke because they were poorly run by the government! So everything's fine! Thanks, 52! Posted by: rinseandspit at May 23, 2009 01:20 PM (oEAm5) 3
We should start a 'fix our soldier's healthcare first' campaign. He would be forced to put money towards better hospitals, more doctors, better aftercare. He couldn't say no, could he? Esecially after his radio address, we can use his words to demand that he personally, along with AL and top officials, oversee the improvement to their care and hospitalization. So I guess the polls really don't like the massive spending, and they need to find a way to hide more. Time to sound conservative-ish again by complaining about deficits, but still splashing in his major plan for overhauling health care!

Insuring more people will increase demand. Increased demand will cause
costs to rise, which will require even more rationing than currently
contemplated unless you plan on spending a lot more money. Whose on Osama's economic team?

That is a good question... if we're broke, and LT health care costs are our main obstacle to this according to the supreme leader, how much further ahead of estimates are we going to see Social Security go bankrupt, and is rationing his answer for this (I.E. the elderly are last in line)?

How much of the $11 trillion dollar deficit was the government spending on health care? Medicare/Medicaid have their own separate liabilities above and beyond the $11 trillion and those are the primary government medical expenditures. Is he saying that without a government run health insurance plan for people under 65, tax revenues are lower than they would otherwise be, thus leading to higher deficits? Eh, there may be some number greater than zero that could be attached to that analysis, but there's no damn way we've lost $11 trillion in tax revenues because the government wasn't running health insurance programs.
The problem is that no politicians have the balls to tax people at the rates they need to be taxed to fund the spending politicians want to do. The reason they don't have the balls to is because they realize that at those tax rates the economy would crater and people would ask "Just what in the fuck do we get for these taxes?". The answer to which, of course, is "Really not all that much", especially compared to the alternative of having most of those government "services" provided by market-based competitors, if at all. 30 t-bird,
That's the thing. Medicare and Medicaid are completely separate from the $11 trillion. They have their own $45 trillion dollar deficits. Politicians have been promising, and providing, people shit without having, as I said, the balls to tax people at the appropriate rates to fund the shit they're promising. And the reason they won't tax people at those rates is because that would make the true cost of the stuff politicians are providing more transparent and people would realize it's just not worth it. Even an idiot will realize that getting $1 worth of stuff from a politician for $1.50 in taxes is a bad deal. But, if that same idiot gets $1 worth of stuff for $0.99 in taxes and $0.51 in Chinese deficit spending funding, it's hard for said idiot to realize he's just borrowing from his own idiot future self to eventually pay back the Chinese. None of this is surprising in a country where most people can't calculate simple compound interest. I'm moving to fucking Lichtenstein. Posted by: BS, Inc. at May 23, 2009 02:15 PM (c7vW5) 38

Would you really want to have better health care (not perfect, just better) in a system where government controls every part of the health care industry? where government rations care? where government must impose confiscatory taxation in order to pay for it? Do the ends of a supposedly slightly better health care system really justify all the destructive means necessary to get it?

Yesterday, Tom "Dumbass" Dubya doesn't trust the CIA's figures. However, today he uses the CIA factbook to "prove" that countries with socialized medicine have populations that live longer than Americans. Putting aside for the moment the axiom that correlation does not equal causation, can Dumbass explain this discrepancy? You guys are going to be sorry if you let socialized health care in there...once it's in, there is no getting rid of it...it becomes a sacred cow....a necessity of life.
Any politician here in Canada that even a rumour is heard that they want to mess with the Canada Health Act automatically loses the election.
We pay just as much for public health care as you do for private, but you have all the helicopters, best doctors, etc etc because doctors with any talent won't stay here...they serve their term after medschool and residency and they are gone. They'll go to the States or a medical resort or someplace where they can charge what they are worth instead of sharing their money with 100 medical bureaucrats per doctor.
The people in the hospitals that put the jello in the little fruit cups make $25.00/hr or more...WTF? I spent 8 months on a waiting list for an MRI.

Hey Tom D, here's some of those statistics you like so much. If you take the US infant mortality rate and subtract out the deaths due to "Disorders related to short gestation and low birthweight: not elsewhere classified" (which is how CDC classifies it), the US's corrected infant mortality rate is 5.67 per 1000 live births. Which is better than Cuba's and about the same as Europe's. So, please, tell us again how terrible the US's system is compared to Europe's.

Nice try but CDC researchers claim that can't explain the difference... "In 2006, 6.71 infants died in the United States for every 1,000 live births, a rate little different from the 6.89 rate reported in 2000 or the 6.86 rate of 2005. Twenty-two countries had infant mortality rates in 2004 below 5.0 infant deaths per 1,000 live births, with many Scandinavian and East Asian countries posting rates below 3.5. While there are some differences in the way countries collect these data, those differences cannot explain the relatively low international ranking of the United States, according to researchers at the disease control agency." Americans whose origins are in Scandanavia have the same life expectancy as Scandanavians. Americans of German ancestry have the same life expectancy as Germans. Yes, it's true that we're also importing disease. But the point I was making was that the assumption that peoples life expectancy should be identical, assuming equal health care, is false. Japanese Americans live as long as native Japanese. The determing factor is genetics, not heatlh care. People of some races just live longer than people of others.

flenser,
To be fair diet also contributes quite a bit. And the diet of the average Japanese person is better than that of the average American. One would expect the dietary trends to merge after several generations. And at that point we're likely to see life expectancies merge, if not converge. Or something like that. I'm out of my depth on this subject, I suppose, and defer to the medical community. Posted by: Nom de Blog at May 23, 2009 04:52 PM (fnU+z) 183
If we don't reduce long-term health care inflation substantially, we can't get control of the deficit.
Yeah, that's the main problem. Medicare. Not 2 trillion in bailouts and pork. Look I'm fine with slashing both programs, I'm fine with lots of cuts. Climate wackos are going full retard. Get ready for this in America soon -- its in Britain now - actual government officials saying dont eat lamb or red meat. Fucking ridiculous.
as allahpundit said....the belching of the lambs......... GIVE up lamb roasts and save the planet. Government advisers are developing menus to combat climate change by cutting out “high carbon” food such as meat from sheep, whose burping poses a serious threat to the environment. Out will go kebabs, greenhouse tomatoes and alcohol. Instead, diners will be encouraged to consume more potatoes and seasonal vegetables, as well as pork and chicken, which generate fewer carbon emissions. “Changing our lifestyles, including our diets, is going to be one of the crucial elements in cutting carbon emissions,” said David Kennedy, chief executive of the Committee on Climate Change. Kennedy has stopped eating his favourite doner kebabs because they contain lamb. A government-sponsored study into greenhouse gases found that producing 2.2lb of lamb released the equivalent of 37lb of carbon dioxide. The problem is because sheep burp so much methane, a potent greenhouse gas. Cows are only slightly better behaved. The production of 2.2lb of beef releases methane equivalent to 35lb of CO2 Tomatoes, most of which are grown in heated glasshouses, are the most “carbon-intensive” vegetable, each 2.2lb generating more than 20lb of CO2 Potatoes, in contrast, release only about 1lb of CO2 for each 2.2lb of food. The figures are similar for most other native fruit and vegetables. “We are not saying that everyone should become vegetarian or give up drinking but moving towards less carbon intensive foods will reduce greenhouse gas emissions and improve health,” said Kennedy. Cut out all the red meat you want, but vegetarian diets increase flatulence in people. 226. I was referring to Britain, but I am sure that sort of transparency will be here soon enough. I am not certain that healthcare had anything to do with this, but if I were a passive-aggressive (is that the correct label?) nanny state, I would frame it as an environmental issue rather than a personal health issue. no doubt the left in America will use bullshit "climate change" rationales (lest us forget that "global warming" cant be used as a descriptor anymore because it doesn't poll well) to push soft tyranny over the individual, and it will simply augment the coming carping at all citizens from Nanny Obama about our "personal habits" and how they need fixing because of health care costs. He's framed the massive deficits being incurred as caused by health care, so why wouldnt he ask (REQUIRE) for "sacrifice" from Americans in the form of lifestyle change, including diet, energy use, etc? He will, and individual freedom in America will die a painful death. Posted by: Anti-Harkonnen Freedom Fighter at May 23, 2009 07:03 PM (5r0Tz) 235

I think that they pull this sort ruse because their citizens may accept that some of their economic freedoms will be curtailed (taxes, etc.) but not their personal freedoms, so if they frame it as a "greater good" (as in "stopping" climate change). Didn't Friedman once say something to the effect of "There can be no political freedom without economic freedom"? I guess it's hard to articulate while sober. In the world of finance at this level, and on the plane of statecraft, there's a kubuki dance of sorts. If you are President of the United States you do not say "we are out of money", which sounds awfully a lot like "we are bankrupt" and may sound even closer upon translation into all the world's languages. You see, they might not take that the right way. It might undermine their confidence in the full faith and credit of the American government and in the world's reserve currency, the US dollar. Even if you really do think the United States is bust you do not come out and say things like this, especially in the midst of a global crisis. You've got to act like you know what the hell you're doing. And you're not supposed to say things like "we're out of money" in some tortured context trying to justify establishing a huge new, expensive entitlement. Nobody's going to believe the President of the United States can possibly be that stupid. So, you don't give the game away, or else the smart money will know, "Holy cow, he really is that stupid!" Posted by: Cowboy at May 23, 2009 07:17 PM (odnDW) 238

fellow morons, he's not stupid. everything obama does, besides the verbal gaffes, is for a reason. maybe this "we dont got no money homes" was a gaffe, maybe it wasnt. that's the debate, not whether obama is stupid. obama is very, very smart, and you can tell by the fact that he has gotten his way so far on everything except the gitmo money, and he's doing a ton of leftist water carrying (see UAW bailout via gm/chrysler bailout, etc) while distracting with political dust like waterboarding. in a sane, undistracted world, obama would be getting hammered on his "plan" on the auto companies. i mean think about it... chrysler - put in bankruptcy, lay off tons of workers in plants and dealers, sell to UAW and Italian co. Fiat... GM - put in bankruptcy, okay chinese plants for production and layoffs, sell to UAW and .... the govt. the govt is getting fucking board seats in both new companies, and in GMAC financial, which will finance both with TARP money for car purchases. does anyone even care that 1. Ford is getting fucked as the govt is favoring by a zillion percent gm/chrysler 2. ford is getting fucked as they'll have to negotiate with UAW as workers and competitors who own Chrysler/GM 3. Obama's "plan" waived away 8 billion in loans to chrysler, 10 billion in loans to GM and likely the new BKR loans will never be repaid but instead be stock 4. Obama's forced shifting of teh fleets to fucking sewing boxes will kill sales and cost consumers billions and billions and noone fucking cares. #248 I'm on the same Ship of Fools as you. The rising slope of this avalanche of soft tyranny looks exponential, yet our neighbors and even friends and family all too often seem to think everything is just fine... after all, no one is making jokes about Obastard... he's too perfect! No one at work dare say anything critical of His Hooves, the Unicorn God... that might mean you're racist. Or greedy. Or a primitive Christ-bag. Or a KKKonservative. There are no other possibilities. This collapse of human dignity, this genuflection to fascism and conformity has been present for decades. It is merely the rise of Pezzydent Affirmative Action (a Marx brand toy) that has revealed the rot of the body politic, like peeling back layers of paint on old wood. And underneath all you see is wormholes and dust. It's the soft nature of the tyranny that worries me. Nothing much will actually be forbidden. However, the mile-high stack of regulations, restrictions and taxes upon "unapproved" behavior will be so high that our freedoms will in effect be utterly extinguished. Yet, Obastard will still smoke his Kools, on the taxpayers' dime. I've said it before... the future of humanity is an ant colony. Posted by: George Orwell at May 23, 2009 10:07 PM (AZGON) 261

Way too long but god damn it, this stuff pisses me off. First, of all, what is the fascination these rationed care zealots have for infant mortality rates in America? It must be all they have, they sure as hell never seem to talk about anything else.
I spent 21 years in Canada's rationed medicine system, and 7 in Japan's. America's is better. People like Tom D rely on the ignorance of most Americans about the realities of those systems to try and sucker us into them with bogus stats cooked to make America look bad, and promises that will never be kept. In Canada, meds, dental, glasses, and many other things are not covered. There is no government provision for "upgraded" service--in fact, until recently to provide such services privately were illegal. If the doc says you don't need an MRI, you couldn't even pay extra to get one--(that would be "fair," you see). I might add that Alberta, a province with a population of 3.6 million people, has 19 MRI machines. Under recent changes to the law, there are six privately owned machines--if you can pay, of course. (The government de-socialized enough recently to realize that if people paid for their own medical care, the gov kept more of their tax money.) At certain ages, services are reduced, such as replacement of the femoral head only in hip replacement, instead of both it and the acetablum. In Japan only the lowest of services are covered for "free"--nice Buddy Holly glasses there, pal. They go well with your amalgam front tooth. Some of the richest people in Japan are hospital owners, who make plenty moolah selling the lastest chemo and other treatments to people who want something better than 80's care. In England, aside from its unbelievable death rate from nosocomial infections, if you decide to upgrade to better meds at your own expense, you become 100% responsible for your own health care--nothing is covered from then on. Certain treatments like dialysis are denied to the elderly. And on, and on, and on. The above are known and provable facts, but the likes of Tom have, in some bizarre way, convinced themselves it will be "business as usual--for free" in America's rationed care system. He'll have a few months to ponder the wisdom of his choice as the only government-approved third-rank chemo fights a losing battle against his prostate cancer. Even if he wanted something better, Big Pharma (now operated by the government) has little enthusiasm for developing it, since there are no profits to be made and wages are crap. The U.S. ranked 37th in this study, and France and Italy ranked first and second. Yet another more recent assessment by the Commonwealth Fund ranked health systems in advanced nations, and the U.S. ranked last or next-to-last compared to 5 other countries: Australia, Canada, Germany, New Zealand, and the UK." "19 MRI machines" MRI's...seems to be the only card the wingnuts play. The main difference between the US and Canada is that MRI's have been a significant source of revenue for healthcare providers in the US because of favorable reimbursement rates from insurers and the federal government. This changed in 2007 however when the Deficit Reduction Act reduced the payment significantly. As a result the number of MRI exams in the US is expected to drop significantly. Half of all personal bankruptcies in the US are due to medical costs which explain why US rates are double those of other advanced economies. "In 2001, 1.458 million American families filed for bankruptcy. To investigate medical contributors to bankruptcy, we surveyed 1,771 personal bankruptcy filers in five federal courts and subsequently completed in-depth interviews with 931 of them. About half cited medical causes, which indicates that 1.9–2.2 million Americans (filers plus dependents) experienced medical bankruptcy." Posted by: Tom Dubya at May 23, 2009 10:53 PM (a2h4u) 275
actually, you're wrong. the reason rates are so huge is because most doctors have to run unneccesary tests (what, you should have ran this and that test, i want 100 million!!) and of course the cost of their malpractice insurance is passed on. You want to fix health care? easy...tort reform. i've seen the inside of an italian hospital many many many times. trust me, i'll take a US er any day! Taking your dropping at face value, I notice this - 1.458 million American families filed for bankruptcy. Okay, so far. But fast forward to - About half cited medical causes, which indicates that 1.9–2.2 million Americans (filers plus dependents) experienced medical bankruptcy. I'm not a math genius in any way, but isn't 1.458 million smaller than 1.9-2.2 million (which is only "half")? So, either this is a terrible cut and paste job, or you're pulling numbers out of your posterior with "quotations" to make it look offical. You people have been distracted by the idiot troll, and have missed the genius of Obama's grand strategy.
All this whining about deficits and debt will be rendered irrelevant shortly. The sheer level of it forces up interest rates, and we certainly cannot afford THAT, so Obama will hyper-inflate the currency so as to pay back all government debt at a small fraction of the cost. For example, if we need to redeem $500 billion in debt held by the Chinese, Obama just cranks up the presses and pays them in cash. Of course, the resulting inflation will mean they can't even buy every resident of their growing country something off the Value Menu at McDonald's. Naturally, your Social Security check won't buy a Happy Meal, either, but look on the bright side: with "health care reform" under a government system, rationing will dictate you are too old to be kept alive by expensive treatments, so you won't have to eat dog food very long. What's funny here is that the leftist is just ignoring the disaster being perpetrated on the entire planet, not just America, by the Democrats in Washington. He's saying some people suffer economic disaster when something catastrophic happens, so that justifies everyone suffering guaranteed disaster by the annihilation of the free market and US economy which in turn would destroy the world economy. And that's just fine with him because someone, somewhere might be uncomfortable or unhappy. Someone might face a challenge or difficulty unless we all suffer to prevent it.

So the deficits weren't caused by Obama's decisions he's made on HEALTH CARE (so far) but HIS PORKULUS bill and HIS 2009 BUDGET BILL, which was passed over the objections of the Republican TEA PARTY, which told him exactly what WOULD HAPPEN, but this 'listening President', didn't want a wet towel thrown over his socialist program expansionistic budget. At least he didn't blame Bush this time for Obama's reckless spending policies.
Now, we are drastically out of money, so what's the logical step, SPEND ANOTHER TRILLION DOLLARS we don't have to NATIONALIZE the very good, though not perfect PRIVATE health care industry, because the NATIONAL programs of Medicare is a FINANCIAL BUST, so let's cause the ENTIRE health care industry to go bankrupt while in the hands of the current socialist democrap US government? Ya'll might not have noticed but this tomdubya is a troll in the truest internet sense of the word. He is posting here just to get a rise. Ya'll rise to the bait and he gets a rise in his attends. His arguments are sophomoric, non-sensical garbage. If he really is in Stagnationope, which I somewhat doubt, why does he spend so much time thinking about this subject? why does he care? And how could he possibly know what Freedom is? When allowed free choice, we live 1.9 years on average less than a caged bird. Live free or die, baby. If that is wingnutty, thank God I am a wingnut.
If he is in the euro cesspool, he is exactly what we revolted against in the first place. Posted by: Artruen at May 24, 2009 10:53 PM (odl1D) 346

"The Seven Percent Solution. Now that's real." What's that, Winnie? Is that your favorite drink? Posted by: blackrockmarauder at May 24, 2009 03:12 PM (GvgvT) You poor uncultured ruffian. I'd instruct you to Google it but I'm feeling magnanimous. The seven percent solution is my favorite drink, after a fashion. Except you inject it. A trick I learned from my fellow myth, Sherlock Holmes. The seven percent refers to the amount of cocaine, by weight I believe, in the solution. Holmes did his best thinking while in the gentle embrace of this concoction. Cheers, pip pip cheerio, and all that rot, what? Posted by: FUBAR at May 25, 2009 05:34 AM (E82+4) 347
Who is this FUBAR character and why does his name appear on my posts?

Half of all personal bankruptcies in the US are due to medical costs which explain why US rates are double those of other advanced economies. "In 2001, 1.458 million American families filed for bankruptcy. To investigate medical contributors to bankruptcy, we surveyed 1,771 personal bankruptcy filers in five federal courts and subsequently completed in-depth interviews with 931 of them. About half cited medical causes, which indicates that 1.9–2.2 million Americans (filers plus dependents) experienced medical bankruptcy." Posted by: Tom Dubya at May 23, 2009 10:53 PM (a2h4u) Canard. The real figure is less than 20%. A study claiming that more than half of all bankruptcies are caused by medical debt 54 is often cited, but the claim conflicts with four decades of economic research. The label "medical bankruptcy" was applied if out-of-pocket medical bills exceeded $1,000, even though out-of-pocket expenses of the average US household were $2,182 in the year studied.55 Recalculating the study’s data, Dranove and Millenson conclude that only 17% of the sample "had medical expenditure bankruptcies.56

Hi guys. Whoso would be a man must be a nonconformist. Help me! Could you help me find sites on the: Lace shower curtains. I found only this - bathroom shower Curtains. Installing a shower curtain valence doesn't have to be a hassle. The curtain can be hung with inexpensive rings or with the traditional style of shower curtains. Thank you very much .
