But that doesn't mean the government shouldn't take over the rest of the health care system.SCULLY: You know the numbers, $1.7 trillion debt, a national deficit of $11 trillion. At what point do we run out of money? OBAMA: Well, we are out of money now. We are operating in deep deficits, not caused by any decisions we've made on health care so far. This is a consequence of the crisis that we've seen and in fact our failure to make some good decisions on health care over the last several decades. So we've got a short-term problem, which is we had to spend a lot of money to salvage our financial system, we had to deal with the auto companies, a huge recession which drains tax revenue at the same time it's putting more pressure on governments to provide unemployment insurance or make sure that food stamps are available for people who have been laid off. So we have a short-term problem and we also have a long-term problem. The short-term problem is dwarfed by the long-term problem. And the long-term problem is Medicaid and Medicare. If we don't reduce long-term health care inflation substantially, we can't get control of the deficit.Medicare is going to be broke in 2018, so naturally the only sane thing to do is put the government on the hook for even more liabilities. This whole idea that we can't get cost under control unless the government controls every thing presupposes that this is an area where the government has any competency at all. Where exactly is the proof of that? The only way the government will be able to even pretend to control costs will be by rationing health care. Now if you are about spreading the wealth around, that's a feature, not a bug. On the upside, Obama says he isn't on board with bailing out California and other states. On the downside, we all know that everything he says comes with an expiration date.

The problem is that no politicians have the balls to tax people at the rates they need to be taxed to fund the spending politicians want to do. The reason they don't have the balls to is because they realize that at those tax rates the economy would crater and people would ask "Just what in the fuck do we get for these taxes?". The answer to which, of course, is "Really not all that much", especially compared to the alternative of having most of those government "services" provided by market-based competitors, if at all.

That's the thing. Medicare and Medicaid are completely separate from the $11 trillion. They have their own $45 trillion dollar deficits.
Politicians have been promising, and providing, people shit without having, as I said, the balls to tax people at the appropriate rates to fund the shit they're promising. And the reason they won't tax people at those rates is because that would make the true cost of the stuff politicians are providing more transparent and people would realize it's just not worth it. Even an idiot will realize that getting $1 worth of stuff from a politician for $1.50 in taxes is a bad deal. But, if that same idiot gets $1 worth of stuff for $0.99 in taxes and $0.51 in Chinese deficit spending funding, it's hard for said idiot to realize he's just borrowing from his own idiot future self to eventually pay back the Chinese.
None of this is surprising in a country where most people can't calculate simple compound interest. I'm moving to fucking Lichtenstein.

I received a notice from my cc comp. today that they are raising my int. from a medium single digit, to a high double digit. It said that they are raising all cards in good standing, that have less than 5,000 bucks on them.
So, I am now paying for asswads that don't pay, pay late, and charge out the ying yang, becuase I chose to decline all of the limit increases.

Life expectancy has practically nothing to do with health care, as paradoxical as it may seem. Americans whose origins are in Scandanavia have the same life expectancy as Scandanavians. Americans of German ancestry have the same life expectancy as Germans. Same with Asian-Americans and Asians, and so on. Americas current poor showing in the life expectancy tables is due to mass Third World migration of people with inherently shorter lives.

To be fair diet also contributes quite a bit. And the diet of the average Japanese person is better than that of the average American. One would expect the dietary trends to merge after several generations. And at that point we're likely to see life expectancies merge, if not converge.

The problem is because sheep burp so much methane, a potent greenhouse gas. Cows are only slightly better behaved. The production of 2.2lb of beef releases methane equivalent to 35lb of CO2 Tomatoes, most of which are grown in heated glasshouses, are the most “carbon-intensive” vegetable, each 2.2lb generating more than 20lb of CO2 Potatoes, in contrast, release only about 1lb of CO2 for each 2.2lb of food. The figures are similar for most other native fruit and vegetables.
“We are not saying that everyone should become vegetarian or give up drinking but moving towards less carbon intensive foods will reduce greenhouse gas emissions and improve health,” said Kennedy.

I think that they pull this sort ruse because their citizens may accept that some of their economic freedoms will be curtailed (taxes, etc.) but not their personal freedoms, so if they frame it as a "greater good" (as in "stopping" climate change).
Didn't Friedman once say something to the effect of "There can be no political freedom without economic freedom"?

In the world of finance at this level, and on the plane of statecraft, there's a kubuki dance of sorts. If you are President of the United States you do not say "we are out of money", which sounds awfully a lot like "we are bankrupt" and may sound even closer upon translation into all the world's languages.
You see, they might not take that the right way. It might undermine their confidence in the full faith and credit of the American government and in the world's reserve currency, the US dollar. Even if you really do think the United States is bust you do [b]not[/b] come out and say things like this, especially in the midst of a global crisis.
You've got to act like you know what the hell you're doing. And you're not supposed to say things like "we're out of money" in some tortured context trying to justify establishing a huge new, expensive entitlement. in a sane, undistracted world, obama would be getting hammered on his "plan" on the auto companies.

chrysler - put in bankruptcy, lay off tons of workers in plants and dealers, sell to UAW and Italian co. Fiat...
GM - put in bankruptcy, okay chinese plants for production and layoffs, sell to UAW and .... the govt.
the govt is getting fucking board seats in both new companies, and in GMAC financial, which will finance both with TARP money for car purchases.
does anyone even care that
1. Ford is getting fucked as the govt is favoring by a zillion percent gm/chrysler
2. ford is getting fucked as they'll have to negotiate with UAW as workers and competitors who own Chrysler/GM
3. Obama's "plan" waived away 8 billion in loans to chrysler, 10 billion in loans to GM and likely the new BKR loans will never be repaid but instead be stock
4. Obama's forced shifting of teh fleets to fucking sewing boxes will kill sales and cost consumers billions and billions

I spent 21 years in Canada's rationed medicine system, and 7 in Japan's.
America's is better.
People like Tom D rely on the ignorance of most Americans about the realities of those systems to try and sucker us into them with bogus stats cooked to make America look bad, and promises that will never be kept.
In Canada, meds, dental, glasses, and many other things are not covered. There is no government provision for "upgraded" service--in fact, until recently to provide such services privately were illegal. If the doc says you don't need an MRI, you couldn't even pay extra to get one--(that would be "fair," you see). I might add that Alberta, a province with a population of 3.6 million people, has 19 MRI machines. Under recent changes to the law, there are six privately owned machines--if you can pay, of course. (The government de-socialized enough recently to realize that if people paid for their own medical care, the gov kept more of their tax money.) At certain ages, services are reduced, such as replacement of the femoral head only in hip replacement, instead of both it and the acetablum.
In Japan only the lowest of services are covered for "free"--nice Buddy Holly glasses there, pal. They go well with your amalgam front tooth. Some of the richest people in Japan are hospital owners, who make plenty moolah selling the lastest chemo and other treatments to people who want something better than 80's care.
In England, aside from its unbelievable death rate from nosocomial infections, if you decide to upgrade to better meds at your own expense, you become 100% responsible for your own health care--nothing is covered from then on. Certain treatments like dialysis are denied to the elderly.
And on, and on, and on. The above are known and provable facts, but the likes of Tom have, in some bizarre way, convinced themselves it will be "business as usual--for free" in America's rationed care system. He'll have a few months to ponder the wisdom of his choice as the only government-approved third-rank chemo fights a losing battle against his prostate cancer. Even if he wanted something better, Big Pharma (now operated by the government) has little enthusiasm for developing it, since there are no profits to be made and wages are crap.

The main difference between the US and Canada is that MRI's have been a significant source of revenue for healthcare providers in the US because of favorable reimbursement rates from insurers and the federal government. The sheer level of it forces up interest rates, and we certainly cannot afford THAT, so Obama will hyper-inflate the currency so as to pay back all government debt at a small fraction of the cost. For example, if we need to redeem $500 billion in debt held by the Chinese, Obama just cranks up the presses and pays them in cash. Of course, the resulting inflation will mean they can't even buy every resident of their growing country something off the Value Menu at McDonald's.
Naturally, your Social Security check won't buy a Happy Meal, either, but look on the bright side: with "health care reform" under a government system, rationing will dictate you are too old to be kept alive by expensive treatments, so you won't have to eat dog food very long.

The seven percent refers to the amount of cocaine, by weight I believe, in the solution. Holmes did his best thinking while in the gentle embrace of this concoction.
