Gov. Palin Rejects Energy-Related Stimulus Cash

She is the only governor to turn away stimulus funds for energy efficiency.

State legislators and U.S. Sen. Mark Begich, D-Alaska, immediately criticized Palin for turning down the $28.6 million. Legislators, who had voted overwhelmingly to take the money, said it will just go to other states to spend while Alaska could have funded weatherization work and renewable energy projects. They said no other state has rejected it.

Palin announced her decision Thursday while signing the state budgets into law. The governor made few other spending vetoes, in contrast with previous years, and accepted the rest of the $930 million in stimulus money that Alaska is eligible for.

Palin said accepting the energy stimulus money would have required the state to follow a federal demand and "entice" local communities to adopt building codes.

The governor believes that building codes are a local issue which should not be subject to federal oversight or reporting. Accepting the money would require Alaska to prepare and submit to the Department of Energy a plan for how it would meet new energy efficiency standards.

1 I agree with the Governor that all local erections should avoid federal oversight.

Is it just me or does anyone else find it somewhat disturbing that the Fed Gov would any interest in establishing and monitoring building codes in Alaska?  WTF is happening?

Good for Palin.

I agree with her (not that that is a surprise). Alaska is a unique environment and rules that apply to the lower 48 states often don't translate well to the state of Alaska.

For example a lot of the mandates of the "no child left behind" act just did not work that well in a state where there are numerous isolated villages that are lucky to attract teachers at all.

This is one reason why a lot of this legislation should be at the state level not the federal level, each state has its own set of unique circumstances and values and the federal government should recognize that.

Syd, I get the impression that, right now, the current administration is looking to grab as much freaking clout as possible over everything and anything, under the guise of "economic stimulus."

Really, they have little to lose.  If states take the money, then the federal government gets the power.  If the states refuse the money, then the federal government is no worse off than they were before, and gets the bonus of an opportunity to paint that state's government as anti-stimulus, anti-prosperity, and anti-Obama.

It is crucial for these people at the state-level to make it absolutely clear to as many of their constituents as possible WHY they are rejecting the money, and what awful things would have happened if they had accepted it.  The average American is oblivious to the strings attached to these funds.

I wish her luck with this. Gov Sanford rejected parts of the “spendulous” and the SC legislature went behind his back and approved a budget that included the spendulous money. Sanford has actually sued them after that.

Exactly.  I know other governors turned down money because it would cost them more in the long run if they had to follow federal rules, and I'm sure some of them didn't like the idea of handing over state & local issues to the feds.  This seems like the same situation here, I'm wondering why everyone else "took the bait".

19 The county I live in has been operating a weatherization program for many years. This year the state is taking the porkulus money and the county had to change the rules and requirements to conform to federal requirements, which translates to more money being spent, less going to actual weatherization.

I saw somewhere, a photo of the capitol building and the caption said "If you don't like the problems we're dealing with, wait until you see our solutions."

23 I work for an civil engineering firm and we have been trying to get several "Stimulus"  projects off the ground in the last 2 months.
There are more strings/hoops/blowjobs attached to this money than I have seen in 20 years of dealings with State & Federal agencies, it is unbelievable how little of our tax dollars will actually get on the ground.
Make no mistake about it, this money was intended for only two purposes;
1) Flood State & Federal agencies with cash thereby making all future budget debates about simply maintaining current budget levels or "BRUTALLY SLASHING" agency budgets.
2) To make damn sure that every thing from building a house to improving a sewer treatment facility to paving a road you or your City/County/State does in the future is connected to or controlled by the Federal Gov.
I'm standing on the tracks in this train wreck every day of the week....and it's fucked up beyond belief.

P.S. "Scare" quotes & CAPS intentionally intended.

The energy-related money was the one thing she said from the beginning that she would not accept, and she didn't. She didn't want to accept most of the remaining stimulus funds either, but the legislature voted to accept it all unanimously, forcing her to veto if she wanted to decline parts of the money. She faces a lot of criticism from Republicans there, and she really got no support from them in this matter.

She proposed a fantastic energy policy months ago that passed and is already up and running. The federal stimulus money would have messed all of that up. Go Sarah!

The legislature voted overwhelmingly to accept it, and would have overridden her veto nearly unanimously.  The other factor is that if a state rejects the funds, other states can apply for them, it's not going back to the taxpayers.  I'd rather have her controlling this money than idiots like Schwarzenegger and that stupid bitch in Michigan who's turned the place into a third-world country.  At least her share won't be going to the mob, the unions, and ACORN.

America's Best Governor, Sarah Palin, has a great supporter at the RNC: Michael Steele. Palin re-affirmed her support for Steele just this past week.

The RNC continues to out-raise the Dems, too. And I might add that Steele is a handsome man who looks great on TV, yet he's totally cool when you meet him. And he's friends with Sarah Palin.

49 So, the Federales offer money with strings attached. The state of Alaska sees the strings and says "we won't dance like your trained monkey." But we never hear about the strings. No, we hear about all that nice Federal money that has been lost to the state of Alaska.

I'd like to hear more about strings attached to money. Obviously, you can seize control of banks and car companies via strings-attached Federal money.

So strings attached to Federal funds would force the state of Alaska to muck about with building codes. Are those the only strings attached to Federal funds?
