| The Golden State: Only the Eight Most Liberal Counties in California Voted in Favor of Higher TaxesThis is on Prop 1-A, the main tax-increase proposition. Wait, did I say the eight most liberal counties voted in favor of increased taxes? I miscounted. The actual number is five. Wait, I'm still overcounting. The actual number is zero.![]() Politicians be forewarned: the public’s tolerance for tax hikes even in an overwhelmingly liberal state is non-existent. The president and Congress shouldn’t bank on running up the tab and handing the bill to the taxpayers. The taxpayers might just vote ‘no’ on all of them. Thanks to gg. Comments1

There wasn't that much noise about these election though. Most people didn't go vote. Those that did were mostly people that are completely fed up with taxes. In other words, this picture will in no way relate to any congressional or presidential election. Unfortunately the California voters who vote democrat all the time are too self-absorbed to understand that it is the democrats who are destroying this great state. Although it passed in zero counties, the fact that, statewide, 34% of "residents" voted for higher taxes is hideous. 1A shouldn't have gotten any more votes than the statistical margin of errors would have permitted. Posted by: reason at May 20, 2009 03:33 PM (q/kmn) 10
Now if only there was some issue we could come up with that would appeal to voters across the board . . . . hmmm . . . I got nothing.

As long as they think other people will be paying the higher taxes, but not them, and they'll be recieving more free goodies because of it, I can see 34% of Californians voting yes just on the latter part alone.

So when business is drying up and most of their investment $s have been halved, lefties were not motivated to come out in large numbers to vote for a tax increase?

Here's my fantasy: CA declares bankruptcy. A rouge Reagan appointee is the judge and shit-cans all Union contracts, ends all tenure, declares part-time legislature and appoints a commision that has 30 days to prioritize all expenditures statewide. Fire / Life / Safety always gets the first dollar. Bottom of the list gets cut first until the budget is balanced. Taxes continue to be cut until growth returns. Lather, rinse, repeat. Bunk.

Sharkman --
Traditionally, all maps always showed the colors in the right order. But I do remember hearing gripes that Democrats should not be "red" since "red" is "socialist." (in the 60's "pinko" was an common slur against fellow travelers) Then during the 90's many newspapers went color and some started doing the maps backward. I think NYT was one of the first, if not the first. then Wikipedia redid all its maps to reflect the change. I'm not saying it was a conspiracy, but it was a concerted effort to go against the historical association of the colors. This is why I refuse to ever refer to "red" states or such. And I hear it I feign ignorance and point out that the speaker is confused since "red" is liberal and the are talking about a conservative state,... Posted by: jcp at May 20, 2009 04:20 PM (DHNp4) 60
It'd be nice if we could un-gerrymander all the districts. Then it might be a little easier to oust these idiots in Sacramento.
What would make it even easier than that would be to crush the unions. All the politicians in CA are bought and paid for by the unions. Until the unions are broken into itty bitty little pieces and permanently disbanded, there'll be no significant change in California. And we should start with the teachers. That is the first I heard that one, and I am sure it sounds like an excuse made up after the fact. The change did happen around 2000, but at that time Wikipedia actually changed it's color coding which was based on Dem=red, Repub=blue. There was also a well known website that generated maps for all the elections and it was the same way. Also many publications used this system. I am a map lover and (and scientist) so I notice these things, and when I first started seeing the reverse it was unintuitive. I even think I recall a discussion on Wikipedia at the time. Some out here in CA are already spinning this vote as "not representative" of the people of CA. You see, only a quarter of the people voted, and they were mostly old crappy white people, and so we really have to understand that this isn't REALLY a vote against taxes. I'm serious. Today, in "Beyond Chron", a leftie online site in SF, they are insisting that voters didn't want a spending cap because we really, really, don't want to cut "essential social services" to "the poor". Actually, fuck YES we do. The SF Chron this morning attributed the low turnout to the measures being "confusing", and lamented that so many people were just too busy to take hours and hours and hours to understand. They went to UC Berkeley and found students who actually didnt' know about the election!!! As if this has anything to do with anything at all. Be assured, folks. This was the Prop 13 vote of the decade. We're over it and tired of it, and one way or the other, it's going to stop. Posted by: Scott at May 20, 2009 05:33 PM (P8L6W) 74

A friend of mine went to a budget meeting in our local school district, and that's exactly what happened. They had announced budget cuts due to blah blah blah and lo, and behold, every budget item had its own little constituency that came crawling out of the woodwork to desperately lobby to keep their pet project funded. "Oh, no, don't cut the underwater basket-weaving classes for minorities. We gotta have underwater basket-weaving classes for minorities. Why, if we don't get our underwater basket-weaving classes for minorities, that's just racist. And we'll be a second-rate school district.
