Obama Lied Overstated Commitment from HealthCare Leaders?

This wouldn't be the first time somebody sat down with the President and came away thinking something completely different about the meeting than him. Remember Poland and the missile shield? And all those Obama staffers who thought the President was saying one thing until he decides to "clarify" their "inartful" statements later? It happens because Obama talks in generalities, without any idea what he's committing himself or others to.

Now it's the healthcare industry.

Hospitals and insurance companies said Thursday that President Obama had substantially overstated their promise earlier this week to reduce the growth of health spending.

Mr. Obama invited health industry leaders to the White House on Monday to trumpet their cost-control commitments. But three days later, confusion swirled in Washington as the companies’ trade associations raced to tamp down angst among members around the country.

After meeting with six major health care organizations, Mr. Obama hailed their cost-cutting promise as historic.

Health care leaders who attended the meeting have a different interpretation. They say they agreed to slow health spending in a more gradual way and did not pledge specific year-by-year cuts.

Who is more believable? Obviously, Obama has a pattern of doing this to people. There's also this weaksauce reply from the White House:

Nancy-Ann DeParle, director of the White House Office of Health Reform, said “the president misspoke” on Monday and again on Wednesday when he described the industry’s commitment in similar terms. After providing that account, Ms. DeParle called back about an hour later on Thursday and said: “I don’t think the president misspoke. His remarks correctly and accurately described the industry’s commitment.”

Silly Nancy-Ann. The One does not misspeak. Lesser mortals mis-hear his divine messages.

More: I focus on Obama's failure, but this is a nontrivial issue. He's trying to use the "historic" compromise to jumpstart healthcare nationalization. Now these folks have completely derailed his plan.

8 Jeez...if anyone thinks he did that by accident they aren't seeing the real picture.  Just like so many right wing pundits are laughing about Obama's statement that the debt is unsustainable. It isn't and he always knew it...but how else is he going to change his promise not to tax the middle class?

This man is one of the brightest men we've ever had in office.  _Nothing_ he does is by accident.  He intends to turn  us into a socialized nation and has the opposition thinking he's a clown.

Think again laughing boy.

9 Oh Noes!! Whatever will he do now? Probably the same thing he always does: Time to set up one of his famous town hall meetings, get all Elmer Gantry on the crowd, promising to save them from their discomforts. Crowd leaves happy, certain that Obama will take care of them. Obama smiles, his ego intact. Health care types take the blame for all problems, foolishly believing that it will get The Won off their backs. Problem solved. Next up: wreck energy supply.

10 This isn't a misunderstanding, or a case of "misspeaking".  He knows what he's doing.  He already knows what he's going to tell the public before these meetings happen.  Then he tells people what they want to hear.  By the time it's revealed that it was false, the wheels are already in motion.  Chances are most people won't see this story, what really happened.

11 The really perplexing thing is that none of these industry leaders has the authority to promise anything.  If the head of the AMA decides it would be a good idea to cut spending on health care, that has zero affect on what Joe Blow, MD of Shawnee Mission, KS does.  This is like having the head of the Rotary Club promise to have all retailers reduce prices on #2 pencils.  Which is to say, total BS

I was kind of wondering the same thing.  And what about those MD's who don't belong to the AMA?  Only about half of all doctors belong.  That trend started when the AMA went leftward.  I don't belong and have no intention of giving them any dues money.  Its sort of like NOW speaking for "all" women.

Not only that, but one of the six groups at the summit was the SEIU. There is no entity on Earth less likely to take a pay cut of any sort. The meeting was a joke. When my dad was sick, I took care of his bills.  He kept getting statements from Medicare about his medical testing, etc.  Some were ligit but some were truely unfathemable.  Medicare was paying for (in my dad's name) for breast biopsy, mammagrams, etc.  I caleed Medicare and they told me just to highlight the charges in dispute and mail it back to them.  5 months later they were still being billed, and paying, for these services.  So, I called back and they told me the same thing, mail it back.  I finally hit my limit when dad started getting calls from a Medicare 'overseer' that wanted to help my dad coordinate his care......for breast cancer!!!  My dad had neck cancer.

I even asked the lady why Medicare was paying for treatment of neck cancer and breast cancer?  Why haven't they done anything with all of the bills I highlighted and returned.  She told me that it costs more to take charges OFF than to just pay them because of all the hoops they have to go through!!!

There is a lot of waste in that agency.

I used to feel the same way, but no one can control these programs. They always start small and then grow and grow. Worse, they create and nurture the idea that this is the way it should be, that the government is supposed to do these things. People really begin to believe the government is supposed to solve problems.

That is not the purpose of government.

It has to stop. All of it. No middle ground. No a little bit here and a little bit there. Don't worry, we won't let it grow beyond what is truly needed.

80 If you are on welfare for more than 5 years, then you are not really trying to get off of it and you should no longer be my problem.

TARP is going to be a major blow to welfare reform advocates.  The Democrats will use TARP for the next 10 years to beat back reform attempts.  It will work.  The Democrats have 25% of the population owned because they live in cities, supported by taxpayer money, locked into limited markets, with rent, housing, and job controls all around them.

Capitalists have to enter cities and start competing on the message front.  Urban dwellers aren't aware of how capitalism helps them.  Their elected officials pretend it does not exist.  Their only guarantee is that government will solve their problems even though its history reflects the opposite.

I agree, charity belongs in the hands of charities, where there will be some accountability.  And the people who need help can place a face/faces with the hands that are giving out money.  Instead of faceless taxpayers, who ironically end up being resented by many of the same people who accept the handouts.

I suggest using sports metaphors.  Most people will a high school education can resonate with the concept of the best athletes get to play the most minutes.  It's a merit based system with a marginal amount of luck and timing built into it.

This is part of the "blank mask" that BO probably had to perfect as a kid as he was shoved from house to house, country to country.

His speaking is all verbal fog designed *not* to communicate, but to generate "agreement". That's why he loves to speak to groups. ex: BO says "we will improve access to healthcare" everyone in the room nods and cheers because well, who's not for that?

No one asks the obvious questions because they're all socially cowed by the massive agreement, which means nothing in real policy terms, around them.

We'll know that the backlash has started when attendees to these yes fests actually stand up and start asking the obvious questions. ex: Mr President, how exactly do you propose to "increase access"? and then hold his feet to the fire with follow-up questions.

Otherwise, well heck, they all "agreed" with BO about his policy objectives which obviously means they "agree" with the way he wants to do it. Without, you know, ever actually endorsing or even learning the process.

This is a coward's and bully's trick. BO doesn't have the intellectual heft or strength to straight up defend and push his policies on their dubious merits. It's how a particularly nasty 13 yr old girl would get her way.

It's an obvious trick with an obvious pattern of use. Business leaders and Republicans better learn to start short-circuiting it now.

84 So, 2000 dealerships go tits-up. Let's say on average 20 employees each. That's 40,000 new involuntary vacationers.

Almost 10 percent of the 500,000 new involuntary vacationers Barry the Hutt creates each month.

Very efficient.

85 Some of these tests were 'done' in my dad's final weeks, when my dad's cancer had beaten science.

I am so sorry for the way your father was treated.

Unfortunately oncologists have a reputation for forcing treatment well past the point of futility.  As a resident (I had a late life career change, hence my handle), I met a few attending oncologists who refused to even discuss death or hospice options with patients/families who clearly needed it, did not allow us to do it,  and continued chemo/radiation well past the point of common sense.  Some do it out of a sincere but misguided wish to "keep fighting", some out of moral cowardice, and some to turn a tidy profit.

We are all fallen sinners.  The only advise I could give would be to put Absolute Trust in no one and remember that you are in charge of your own medical care, not the doctor.  This includes other family members if you were given Medical Power of Attorney.

Thanks for your concern.  He was a great man.

All the tests being billed for weren't even being billed by his doctor.  They were being billed by the hospital.  I think that they mixed up my dad's billing# and another patient's.  I was just so frustrated when I was trying to take the time, away from caring for my dying father, to do the right thing.  I was telling them it was wrong, and they told me it was easier than doing it right.

I can certainly see your point.  I think a lot of this could be controlled if we returned to a proper idea of shame.  It should be embarrassing to get help, but help should still be there.  The big draw in families, charities and churches doing the lifting is the fact that the ones getting the aid have to look them in the eye.

But we no longer value shame.  Self esteem is the answer, we are told.  We have some of the proudest sociopaths in the world.  Hurray for us.

95 Actually I don't mind a little bit of lowest common demoninator welfare, both for life stuff (food, shelter) and even healthcare. The things is, that it has to mostly suck. It should be enough to keep people alive, off the streets and will fix your broken arm, but that's it. The vast majority of folks should look at it and shudder.

Unfortunately, you can't have a system like that, because even if it began that way, before too long, someone would make a case that it "inhumane", etc. and we'd be back on the same road we're on now. If only we could get a system like that completely entrenched in a bureacracy who's only concern was that it stayed just exactly like it was.

eman @ 57 has said a very profound thing. There was extensive debate about public-funded health care at its inception 45 years ago, covering every ideological aspect including conspiracies. Yet, to hear the code-worded, canned discussions going on now, you'd think they'd never happened.

It's one [inexcusable] thing that citizens of the world have no sense of the history of things that happened 200, or 600, years ago. It's another, more shocking, that we can't bring ourselves to remember our own times.

Posted by: comatus at May 15, 2009 10:25 AM (mBgi9)

97 During the debates in the early sixties on creating Medicare the Republicans said this idea was creeping Socialism and would someday be an enormously costly enterprise. The Democrats said "Nonsense! Only two little old ladies in Miami would ever need this program. Do you hate little old ladies? You cheap, heartless Republican monster."

And along those lines:

During debate on the Senate floor, Ted Kennedy, speaking of the effects of the Immigration and Nationality Act of 1965, said, "First, our cities will not be flooded with a million immigrants annually. Under the proposed bill, the present level of immigration remains substantially the same.... Secondly, the ethnic mix of this country will not be upset.... Contrary to the charges in some quarters, [the bill] will not inundate America with immigrants from any one country or area, or the most populated and deprived nations of Africa and Asia.... In the final analysis, the ethnic pattern of immigration under the proposed measure is not expected to change as sharply as the critics seem to think.... The bill will not flood our cities with immigrants. It will not upset the ethnic mix of our society. It will not relax the standards of admission. It will not cause American workers to lose their jobs."

But heaven forbid Republicans should have some sort of organized opposition to these incredibly destructive policies the Democrats relentlessly and dishonestly push.  Better to reach some sort of "bi-partisan" moderately ruinous compromise instead.  We wouldn't want the lefty propagandists in the MSM to label us, "the party of no".  Let's work on re-branding so that we can be known as the party of, "Okaay.  But only if you promise to pull out!"

This is what I'm learning:

That if I'm working in a store on Christmas Eve and a customer asks me what the store's hours will be on Christmas Day, I ought to tell him that we'll be open from 6 to 6. That will make him happy. Of course, he'll be quite unhappy when he finds the store to be closed on Christmas Day, but I won't be there, so I won't need to deal with that.

It's a win-win -- that is, I win today and I win tomorrow. Screw the other guy.

On topic, one of the best lessons I ever learned was from a former boss.  Here it is, gratis:

"If you don't have a name and a date, in writing, you've got squat."

The One has squat.  If you doubt me, tell me exactly who is going to cut what and by when.  Then ask them for the details of how they are going to do it.

The only reason any politician is alive is because most people are too stupid to press for these answers.  If you did ask, you'd know they were lying.

It's a deliberate tactic. I meet with the President. The Pres. praises me to the press and claims I made a commitment to him. I know I did not. I now have the choice of contradicting the man with all the power or fulfilling his wish. The carrot is he allows me to look good if I do what he wishes. The stick is implied.

But first, they had to provide medical documentation and proof that my brother in fact had his birth defect when he was born...

Ok, I'll say that again.  They had to provide documentation to prove that he had his birth defect at birth.
