Nancy Pelosi Is Having A Bad Day

She just gave a press conference to explain her version of 'what she knew and when' about "torture".

It didn't go well.

Under a barrage of questioning, Pelosi also again adamantly insisted that she was not aware that waterboarding or other enhanced interrogation techniques were being used on terrorism suspects and

"I am telling you they told me they approved these and said they wanted to use them but said they were not using waterboarding," she said.

Growing increasingly frustrated throughout the briefing, Pelosi slowly started backing away from the podium as she tried to end the questioning. As she backed out, she continued to accuse the CIA of not telling Congress that dissenting opinions had been filed within the administration suggesting the methods were not lawful.

She called the CIA liars and one of the reporters basically called her a liar. Another reporter asked about health care and the other reporters audibly groaned.

If you are a Democrat and the press is after you and you are fighting a war with the CIA, you are in trouble.

MSNBC didn't buy it and CNN anchor used the word "fabrications" to describe her statements.

I believe Steny Hoyer is measuring the drapes in the Speaker's office.

It could just be me but I'm guessing the CIA isn't going to take this lying down.

Popcorn anyone?

Update [Slublog] - Thanks to "Blue Balls the Pirate" for providing a link to the full video. The best stuff is at the end, especially the aide trying desperately to get his boss out of the room.

Of course, reporters knew she was lying when she fed them this crap while Bush was president. The CIA could have proved she was lying two years ago.

But their agenda came first. They let her do as much damage to the country and its War on Terror as she wanted - as long as it hurt Bush and the GOP.

Post-election, when it can't damage their own party, it's safe to report the truth. They'll chuck her out of the way now so that by midterm elections she'll be a faded memory.

It's as if they all got the GO signal from the same source simultaneously.

29 Thanks kidney, I may be too cynical for my own good but this sudden crash of madam Pelosi is curious. The media is involved too? Seems she is being left out in the cold. Apparently, she grabbed a mike after Obama spoke yesterday or the day before to sing his praises to him. She obviously knows from where her demise is originating. They told her to cover so they could Bush bash. She, being the Bush basher wonder, agreed. They then leaked the CIA info, then the staffer info. It will be interesting to see what job this staffer gets. Pelosi is scrambling and Obama is sitting back and letting her burn. I wonder what she did or whether Rom just thinks Steny will be easier to handle. The O team had to weigh the damage this would do to the democrats against whatever their need is. Her seat is not in danger of being switched to a republican so she is expendable. They are doing this early enough so that they can recover by the mid-terms.

35 I had the dubious pleasure of listening to her hemming and hawing. Actually, it was definitely pleasurable. While I did not see her give the statement, the tone of her voice was to me one of a panic muted by prevarication. And she did completely throw the CIA under the bus.

She kept mentioning  the need for a "Truth Commission". Doesn't the term "Truth Comission" imply that the outcome has already been determined? Does anyone think the objective truth will come out in this process?

As far as whether or not Hoyer is better or worse than Pelosi? Who cares? this is the tee up for 2010. The dems will be in disarray. The real question is will the republicans let this crisis go to waste?

39 I wonder what she did or whether Rom just thinks Steny will be easier to handle.

I think it's a little of both...  Pelosi's too much of a lightning-rod for Republicans to focus on for 2010, plus Hoyer is Rahm's buddy and will be easier for them to deal with.

(At the least, I think Hoyer makes it easier for them to get votes from "Blue Dogs", who have been openly mocked and marginalized by Pelosi over the past year or so.)

Posted by: Brandon In Baton Rouge at May 14, 2009 11:02 AM (rfebR)

40 Pelosi knows where every body is buried for the last 20 years. Nobody in her party is going after her. The CIA are covering their asses and the press is helping. Why?
Because the press protects only one thing more aggressively than Dems., their sources. Their is no way to have a "Truth Commission" and not have half the leakers in Washington outed. Obama got the message load and clear and has reversed himslef on all kinds of stuff. The House....not so much.

57 It's a truism that the half-smart are the most prone to Hubris (in the Greek sense of the word). And no one on earth is more half-smart than Nancy Pelosi. Just smart enough to fool everyone; not smart enough to realize her own limitations. Smart enough to throw the grenade; not smart enough to move back far enough to avoid the blast. A hallmark of truly smart people is a certain amount of humility: they know what they don't know. Half-smart people are convinced that they are smarter than everyone else, and ignore evidence to the contrary.

The thing about Pelosi is that she's immune to contrary evidence. She'll go to her grave thinking she was right. Her brain -- like so many on the Left -- is composed of equal parts platitude, cliche and caricature (with a heaping helping of cement). People like this are beyond convincing; the only thing that we can do is limit the damage they cause.

When will the nation wake up and realize that while the GOP may sell the country out to big business (providing jobs and economic growth), the Dems sell us out to special interests that destroy education, cripple the ability of cities and towns across the country to make ends meet, and make the politics of abortion and sex changes more important than the politics of families.

I don't think Pelosi is quite finished yet. Her type fights until they're bled out. The more of her colleagues that turn against her, the more she'll attack them back with increasing ferocity. If she begins to realize she's being cut loose by her own, she will make it a battle royale. This creature is second in line for succession and that's a powerful platform.

I hope she fails.

My new favorite One Act Play:

Tony Rezko: "We want to take this opportunity to welcome Ms. Pelosi to our little community here under the bus. Nancy this is Jeremiah, Jeremiah this is Nancy. Jeremiah was once a spiritual leader for The One. And over here is The One's grandmother. Technically she's dead, but we keep her with us here under the bus due to her stature as being one of the pioneers in the under the bus movement. And of course you know Gov. Blagojavich. I'm sure y'all have crossed paths at some trough or another. It takes a little getting used to Nancy after the heights you've achieved, but we like it here. It's comfortable. And we expect more luminaries in the future. Misery loves company don'tcha know."

Lyle at 10:51 nails it, as long as the target is Bush everyone, the Dems, CIA, MSM all sang the same tune.

For 8 yrs, the liberals in the CIA waged a war on the Bush administration and the WOT out of naked partisanship.  It's probably also safer work considering the risks involved if you pull all that shxt in a foreign country.  Far easier and safer to plan a coup right here at home, one you have a reliable ally in the MSM that cover for you and two you can drive home from work every day, can't do that in a foreign country, just ask Valarie Plame.

Still it's quite a shock to see the MSM turn on the one of the Dems, maybe they are just getting rid of a liability before she can damage the One further.

So I welcome a speaker who has a coherent platform, so at least we have something to argue against. Rather than..

Which liberal agenda has the conservative movement blocked so far? Which one are we projected to block in the future? To me it looks like Obama is LaDanian Tomlinson with the All-Pro NFL offensive line in front of him, the PE class from the school for deaf, dumb, and blind pre-teen girls on defense, and the refs have been paid very handsomely to go sit in the dressing room and smoke some weed. The TV commentators are arguing over which one gets to suck LaDanian first. And about a quarter of the people in the stands don't want to be bothered with the details until the last week of October 2012.

So I'm not sure that that word thriving that you used means what I thought it meant.

Her name is Fredo, and it's time for her to take a swim.  I think The One is going to let her struggle, and maybe drown, for a variety of reasons.  La Pelosi has pissed off about 48% of the electorate, and after what's going to happen in the next two years, the Dems don't need any more pissed off people coming to the polls--they can't get at Obama, but they can get at the Congressional Dems.  So she had to go.

Now as to the manner of her going:  I agree that she's "half smart", so she thinks she can get away with telling people that cow manure tastes like vanilla ice cream.  The only problem is that there have been two Democratic masters at that art--Billl Clinton was not only a liar, but as one rueful Republican observer said, "He's very, very good at it."    But Clinton is a woeful amateur compared to The New Messiah--who, if he chose to do so, would persuade about 65% of the people in this country that the sun was going to rise in the West tomorrow morning.   These two are gifted liars--La Pelosi, not so much.  And so, when her top cover is pulled off, and she's left without protection, she's going to get strafed.  Couldn't happen to a nicer target.

Posted by: San Francisco Kid at May 14, 2009 11:47 AM (UHTK+)

115 The media has a deal with liberal Dems.  They can lie as much as they want and the media lets them get by with it.  At least that's what I thought.  Apparently that's what Nancy thought too.

But criticizing a Democrat for lying?  That's like passing out speeding tickets at the Indianapolis 500.

The MSM will cover for any Dem as long as it is viable.  When they realize that a particular Dem is in too deep to continue covering for, they push them over the cliff so they can act like they were doing their job the whole time.

Considering Obama's flip-flop on Gitmo detainees (One of the core issues that got him elected) this week, the MSM needed a big sacrifice to distract people's attention from him.  Sorry Nan, it was either you or him.

There are still plenty of MSMers who are loyal to Nancy, so by tomorrow I expect hear that Bristol Palin has joined a cult.

Pelosi is the Obama of Congress in the sense that becuase of how safe she is, none of her utterances have ever been held up to electoral scrutiny. Accordingly, she is bitterly clinging to something that is assinine beyond belief - that waterboarding is torture - not to mention lying about it.

Waterboarding is far more popular with the American public than Nancy Pelosi is, and since she is not at all politically savvy, she is going full moonbat on this.

130 Pelosi is going nowhere. Not before the 2010 elections anyway. There is only one thing that can oust a Dem Speaker and that's losing. Pelosi won the House 2 years before there was an Obama compaign. The House don't owe him shit. The Dems already know that they will lose seats in the House in 2010, Obama or no Obama. The only thing which will get Pelosi out is if the losses are much greater than expected.

This whole drama is strictly to get her, and the nutroots, to shut up about the war crimes bs and Truth Commissions. That crap just disrupts business and dealing. People like Rangel, Waxman, Conyers, etc will support her till the bitter end because she gives them free reign.

And the Republicans shouldn't push too hard to get her out either. Having her as the face of the Dems is the best thing that could happen.

She's the one who was welcomed graciously by George Bush when she ascended to speakerdumb. Her response to his kindness was to label him a screwup and say that she would go on bashing him because she was a woman and could say things that a man could not get away with.

I had low hopes for her and she has more than lived up to them. She was used to being protected by the liberal media and not having to watch what she said or did, and she may have gone too far. No sympathy at all.

The new guy will not be any better ideologically, but this could take a little of the imperial hubris and wind out of the Dems' sails.

If it turns out that waterboarding is illegal torture then do all the pilots in the US military who, with their flight crews, underwent SERE training including being waterboarded get to sue the government for toturing them? Every pilot and flight crew have been water boarded since the Viet Nam era. So we would have to go back and convict Carter, Reagan, Bush 1, Clinton, Bush2, and Obama for torturing our own military personel? And all the members of all of those Congresses?

How much will congress have to pay these people for intentionally and knowingly torturing them? For Decades!

And how desperately Pelosis changes her story over and over. As the minutes and transacripts come out her story will change a few more times.

The more this subject of "torture" gets airplay, the more the anti-war leftist kooks look like, well, anti-war leftist kooks. The fact that we're almost, kinda sorta, getting a whiff of the truth (that we actually have real, live enemies that want to kill us), exposes the multi-culti fallacy that everyone else in the world is just like us, only different, and if we'd only talk to them, they'd love us and we could all sing a rousing rendition of Kumbaya together.

Cheney, you magnificent bastard! I'll agree with Rush that he gets results. I also hope he doesn't back down but instead gets on TV every day, just to be the burr under The Vapid One's° saddle.

I doubt it's so much pissed off as setting her up to be the fall guy (gal?).  Who wrote the stimulus bill?  If it goes well, doubtful at best, it will be Obama.  If it goes poorly, Nancy Pelosi.

This is a great example of the Dem/MSM/far left echo chamber who think that "waterboarding" is terrible and justification to jail any former administration official who did not agree with them. This view is shared by the Moonbats, Dems and MSM but not by most of the rest of us.

So lets start a "whitch hunt"...run by the Dems in congress who knew about it but did nothing to stop it...except they now say that did not know about it. Got it so far. Enter the CIA..who then reminds Nancy that she and other members of congress were briefed, notified, er...told about it. So they did know but did nothing to stop it...except BB who says she did not know.

Don't you think Il Duce and MSM would rather be talking about fixing health care, the auto industry, lowering the sea level...than about the Speaker of the House being caught in a huge lie.  This has stepped all over their message and changed the discussion about security.

Cheney reminded everyone that the Dems will make us less safe, because of their fetish about rights for terrorists, and the dangerous effort to undo the system created by the government to protect us over the last 8 years. The waterboarding issue is so rediculous because most Americans outside the beltway think it was effective and terrorist deserve that treatment.

Now the MSM must remind Nancy that they alone know the truth and she will have to worship at the altar of MSNBC,CNN ect to beg forgiveness and clarify her position. NSM will then tell everyone this is ok and other things are more important...unless Il Duce decides bb must go...and then the MSM will oblige.

207 Pericles, in his funeral oration after the first battles of the Peloponnesian War, said "For where the rewards of virtue are greatest, there the noblest citizens are enlisted in the service of the state."

Which should tell you something, given the caliber of people now running the government. If you want honest and transparent government, you have to reward these virtues so that upright and honest people will enter public service. Nancy Pelosi is what happens when moral cowardice, careerism, and empty rhetoric are rewarded more highly than accomplishment. We as an electorate deserve Nancy Pelosi because we do not have the belly to kick her out. In fact, we elevated her to one of the highest positions in the land -- this venal, corrupt, medacious woman of small mind and few accomplishments. How can we deny that we value these traits?

We should ask ourselves.  Were we that upset with Bush and the GOP on the Hill to put these people in charge?  Bush and the GOP gave fiscal conservatives every reason to stay home in the Nov06 elections.  This was a huge mistake.  It put Pelosi in charge.  All the country did was put a bra on "The Hammer".

It's too bad there isn't some form of... 69/93  By the end of the skit, one of her aides was having a medical problem off-screen related to an S+M session and she was repeatedly yelling "PALOMINO!" as a result.

There was an AP story out of San Fran many moons ago involving two gay men, a gerbil, and a lighter.  It did not end well.  The article explained that one of the participants admitted that he yelled "Armageddon!" but too no avail.

As for Rahmbo and his boy Steny, we could be in for even more devious dealings than with Bela Pelosi.  Depends on Obozo's "honeymoon" being over or not.  I don't think the blue dogs have worked against her at all.  They do whatever they're told.

My fellow Texan, the sushi knives are being sharpened, and wouldn't it be nice if they all stabbed each other, I think it's coming.

247 If Obama and/or Rahm are really behind this (and it seems likely), and they manage to maneuver Pelosi out and Hoyer in as Speaker, then they have a Speaker who's indebted to them.  They made him Speaker.

And I showed I can unmake him speaker any time I want.

The Chicago Way.

248 Hey, this sounds crazy, but how about a second party?  Instead of just the Democrats (with their two wings, the Crazy-crats and the Fatuo-crats) have an actual different Party?  Maybe name it after something traditional, like perhaps the form of government the Founders established?!!

Posted by: sherlock at May 14, 2009 01:46 PM (FsbnY)

249 I have to comment on the "Why doesn't the GOP..." nonsense.

First, even if the GOP had a coherent, appealing message, it would never get out, thanks to the MSM.

Second, why do you sit on your butt waiting for the GOP to carry your water for you?  Conservatism is not top-down.

Third, when an enemy is killing himself, do not stop him.

did anybody catch when she read her statement on torture, at 5:30, she says "I am equivocally opposed to the use of torture". Was it a typo in the speech, did she mis-speak, or did she accidentally say what she's really thinking?

Webster defines equivocal as

1 a: subject to two or more interpretations and usually used to mislead or confuse

For a bunch of University honor graduates, politicians (as well as journalists) often seem to not understand the true definition of many words they throw around.

311 Pelosi won the House 2 years before there was an Obama compaign. The House don't owe him shit. The Dems already know that they will lose seats in the House in 2010, Obama or no Obama. The only thing which will get Pelosi out is if the losses are much greater than expected.

Rahm Emanuel is generally acknowledged to have been the mastermind of the 2006 takeover -- by deviously and carefully selecting blue dog Dems to run against Neocons. The intellectually-challenged Pelosi had no real hand in that victory, and she's an expendable distraction and cover for The One's trampling on the CIA's toes, and the subsequent about-face re the "torture" photos.

Hey, we have a minority goddess as First Lady, wonder woman as SOS, a female minority person as UN Rep, a female wearing comfortable shoes heading DHS, and most likely another female minority person as the next SCOTUS nominee -- not to mention O's indispensable Valerie Jarrett holding down the WH fort.

Pelosi has outlived her usefulness -- she's a bone for fido. Chomp!
