Charlie Crist Is Running For US Senate

Oh joy.

Sen. John Cornyn, head of the National Republican Senatorial Committee, quickly endorsed Crist as "the best candidate in 2010 to ensure that we maintain the checks and balances that Floridians deserve in the United States Senate. "

The announcement, which had been expected, is also likely to stir up Florida politics as others scramble to replace the popular governor, who was considered a shoo-in had he sought a second term.

"Our country is facing the most profound public policy questions in our lifetime, questions relating to the economy, taxes, healthcare, the environment and national security," Crist said in a statement.

Crist said he intends to take to Washington his Florida approach, that "when we put people first and work together much can be accomplished."

Noticeably missing from his list of important questions is spending. That would be a bit tough to swallow coming from a guy who not only supported the stimulus but helped Obama sell it.

He also helped deliver Florida to McCain during the primaries which ensured McCain's eventual nomination.

Thankfully, Crist isn't the only candidate running. Former Florida House Speaker Marco Rubio is also in the race. His website is pretty basic at this point but you can check him out here.

Rubio is clearly the more conservative of the two (though that's not really a high bar to clear against Crist).

The fact that John "I need Arlen Specter" Cornyn is putting the weight of the RNSC behind Crist this early shows one important thing...the GOP leadership still doesn't get it.

Why are they even backing someone in a primary? This isn't a case of some Big Foot guy like Crist running against only token opposition from some local crank. This is a matter for Florida voters not people in Washington.

These "leaders" in Washington may wake up one day to find they don't have any followers. More crap like this and that day will be much sooner than later.

David Frum emails to say, "A Republican who holds no conservative values and works with Obama? My God, dreams do come true!"

Slublog sends along Rubino's video response to Crist's announcement. Short version...Bring it on.

Warning this is a double post.  Yes, I think this is that important.  If I am wrong, sorry. This thread went up when I was posting on another thread.

Taliban using WMDs in Afghanistan: http://tinyurl.com/ozzg7t

MUHMUD RAQI, Afghanistan – At least 84 Afghan girls were admitted to a hospital Tuesday for headaches and vomiting

Tuesday's apparent attack is the third alleged poisoning at a girls' school in less than three weeks. It comes one day after 61 schoolgirls and one teacher from a school in neighboring Parwan province were admitted to a hospital after complaining of sudden illness. They were irritable, confused and weeping, and several of the girls passed out.

The first apparent poison attack took place late last month in Parwan, when dozens of girls were hospitalized after being sickened by what Afghan officials said were strong fumes or a possible poison gas cloud.

This deserves a flaming f'in skull!

4 Crist is such an empty suit.  He hasn't accomplished squat since becoming governor, and during the election he had to get married to prove he isn't gay.  Nice leadership style.

These dipshits shouldn't endorse anyone period.  They should sit down and shut up until the primary is finished then fund the guy that won for the general election.

6 Yeah, the RNC isn't getting it. We don't want squishes. We need bold leaders who can draw a distinction between us and them. This just seems like a prevent move to avoid a primary fight. But we need to have primary fights to define ourselves.

I listened to the Chairman of the Fla GOP this morning being interviewed on Bill Bennett's show (yeah, I was the one).  The chairman came across just as we've come to hate many of our Republicans:  smug and dismissive.  He completely wrote off the more conservative Rubio and explained his support for Crist based on the fact that he had essentially brought home the bacon for the good people of Florida.  Another Republican who doesn't bother to embody Republican principles.

And MISS CALIFORNIA KEEPS HER TITLE.  HERE'S TO OUR VP NOMINEE IN 2024!!!

We're already losing a squish in Mel Martinez, so it would be *kinda* nice to replace him with someone who isn't a John McCain butt-buddy.

And, yes, Cornyn needs to STFD and STFU until after the primaries are done.  The NRSC should *not* be picking sides in primaries, especially for open seats.

Fox reported on this morning and they made a brief comment about another more conservative Republican in the race but it was easy to see that Fox wanted the squishy.

The party is still pushing the squishies and that is BAD. If they run another squishy here they are likely to lose this seat. There goes one more to the Dems. Fox tried to make out that Crist was a very popular governor.

13 The fact that the RNC still doesn't get it doesn't bode well for the party as a whole. For the life of me, I can't figure out why they are so dismissive of conservatives & the principles that would WIN ELECTIONS if they are talked about & championed. Do these a$$holes want to lose and lose and lose? I simply don't understand their bone headed stances. And I agree...they need to keep their mouths shut and not endorse one R candidate over another during any primary. What baloney.

Oh, they get it all right. And one day, maybe, everyone here will wake up and smell the coffee. The only candidates that are going to get any real backing for high ranking public office are those that are "approved" by the "real powers that be". Hasn't anyone here come to the realization that no matter who gets elected, especially to the presidency, the country continues to move further and further away from the constitution? Sometimes slower, sometimes faster. Currently we are at breakneck speed towards a one world govt. controlled by the world's central bankers. Go ahead, blow it off. Don't even take a serious look at it. Say it's nothing but tin-foil hat stuff. But just because 'some' people that espouse this viewpoint have some crazy views, it doesn't mean that this view is crazy.

Right. Obama is one of the greatest double-talkers in the last century. He routinely says one thing, does another, then says what he did was what he intended all along. And the adoring, ass-kissing press confirms it. Getting anything substantive out of an Obama quote is like straining gnats through a fine mesh sieve. The reason so many young women love him (if they do) is because he is a celebrity, not a President.

Damn, never thought I'd say this but Arlen Sphincter was right, the Republican party has changed.

A problem with Pubs is that while the Dems are the party of 'pork for all', the Pubs are the party of 'pork for me and not for thee'.

I think part of this problem is because Pubs can't get their message out.  They know that the media will do whatever it takes to twist the news if a Pub votes against spending, pork, etc.  They know if they speak out their words will be twisted.  So instead of counting on the Pub machine to set the record straight, they cave, over and over again, until what they once stood against is now what they are standing for.

1. Media
2. Culture
3. Education

...are all controlled by liberals. As long as this condition remains, it won't make a damn bit of difference how many politicians with 'R's after their names we elect to office, nothing will change. Even if we find good conservative candidates, they will either (a) not win, (b) win, but not be able to do anything or (c) win, and then adapt themselves to the prevailing liberal zeitgeist.

It's depressing.

54 Right. Obama is one of the greatest double-talkers in the last century.

Not really.  Bill Clinton was much better, but Obama simply goes unchallenged.  It is clear that the least little bit of criticism rattles him.

The thing is that Crist is a reasonably popular sitting governor.  He ain't going to lose this primary.  Sorry.  Unfortunately, that's the way these things work.  Cornyn is afraid that a conservative primary opponent will tear down Crist, but with enough money to win, Crist can get the nomination but be too bloodied for the general.  This is part of the problem with 6-year terms.

Sometimes you get a Toomey/Specter, but that's rare and that's after Specter making a total ass of himself at every turn for over 2 decades.  I think we can at least count on Crist to be on conservatives' side when we're winning.

Still, is it too much to ask for a fiscal conservative?  I'll even take somebody who took lots of stimulus money on the theory that somebody's going to spend it anyway. That's perfectly rational.

63 I still would rather have Crist than a Democrat...but that's just me. Contrary to conventional wisdom here I think the objective in 2010 is not to allow the US to become a one party state, which is what will happen if we end up with 35 seats. A grass roots movement like the one that defeated Bush's immigration "reform" could have some impact on ideologically mushy people like Crist, but believe me it will have no impact if a liberal Democrat wins the Fla. seat.

66 From the perspective of somebody who lives in Florida and (regrettably) voted for Christ, the lying sack of equine fecal matter is not particularly popular here.  At least for those of us that pay attention to his policies, which are notably not conservative.  I wouldn't mind if he were just hostile toward conservative social policies, it's more the populist "let's screw the insurance companies and get everyone to be a part of the public property insurer" then complain when insurers run out of the state that gets me.

He's anti-capitalist, or, at the very least, pro-whatever-will-keep-him-popular.  He's got no verifiable principles and represents the absolute worst of what the Republican party has to offer.  He's exactly the kind of bottom-feeding, short-sighted RINO that we need to (metaphorically) hunt to extinction within the party.

Crist is a panderer and opportunist in spanish we call him "aprovechador". Slick like pig in mud he is. This is exactly the type of politician we do not want. This is what the tea parties were about do not send people like this to washington. I wrote a email to Crist urging him not to accept the stimulus what did I get back, a email from his lackeys stating it was for the kids. No matter that the residents of florida would taxed after the federal dollars ran out.

No bother that a cat4 hurricane hits florida we the residents will be footing the bill after his horrible management of hurricane fund. More taxes that is what he stands for,  just up Obama's alley.

72 As some of you are aware, I live in Tallahassee. Crist's announcement doesn't come as a shock. We haven't believed his denials (and non-denials) since Martinez announced his retirement.

And so far as I am aware, Marco Rubio says all the right things. I've heard him on our local talk radio during the morning drive now and again.

The only upside to bouncing Charlie to the Senate: it probably eliminates a presidential run in 2012.

73 I'm thinking to switch my party affiliation so that I can vote for Rubio.

Good call. Gotta do that, too.

...during the election he had to get married to prove he isn't gay

Crist got married? I did not know that. Who's the beard?

From Wikipedia:

Crist became engaged to Carole Rome on July 3, 2008 and was marriedon December 12, 2008

I'm not sure who she is, but she has some money of her own. And no, that was not during Crist's election cycle.

Triva: Crist would be term limited...in 2014, if he where relected to Governor in 2010.

Why not just recruit Colin Powell instead?

The GOP leadership is so out of touch.
