Change In Command In Afghanistan

Gen. David McKiernan, who was less than one year into an 18-24 month command tour, was basically fired by Secretary Gates and Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff Adm. Mullen.

The change is aimed at "getting fresh thinking, fresh eyes on the problem," Gates told a Pentagon news conference.
The move comes as more than 21,000 additional U.S. forces begin to arrive in Afghanistan, dispatched by Obama to confront the Taliban more forcefully this spring and summer.
Replacing McKiernan will be Lt. Gen. Stanley McChrystal, who has had a top administrative job at the Joint Chiefs of Staff for less than a year. He is a former commander of the Joint Special Operations Command.
McKiernan held the command in Afghanistan for about 11 months.
Gates recommended to Obama that McChrystal be nominated for the top job and that Lt. Gen. David M. Rodriguez be McChrystal's deputy. He urged the Senate to confirm the two quickly.

Possibly the most awesome part of this is that McChrystal headed the the Joint Special Operations Command which crazy Seymour Hersh said was nothing more than the home of Dick Cheney's super secret assassination teams.

Expect lots more shortly on why McKiernan was fired and what Gates and McMullen expect out of McChrystal.

One name I didn't hear mentioned in the press conference (though I missed some of it) was David Petraeus. McKiernan took over in Afghanistan last summer, Petraeus took over CentCom last fall. I'm pretty much of the, "whatever Petraeus wants, Petraeus should get" school, so if this change reflects his thinking, it's likely a good thing.

I should note one possible reason Petraeus wasn't invoked here is because he wanted McKiernan to stay. In which case applying my "whatever Petraeus wants, Petraeus should get" rule, this is bad.

As you can see in the comments, there are a lot of reasons this may have happened. Time will tell.

5 The military is having a big internal struggle right now over the strategic direction of the armed forces. Some (like Petraeus) think that Iraq and Afgahnistan are probably good templates for most of our military action in the coming decades: terrorism, nation-building, conventional stuff up to BCT level. But some others -- notably some in the Air Force and Navy -- think that the Army is seeing things through OD Green glasses. We need to be thinking (and arming ourselves) for large state actors as well: Russia and China, mainly. They point out that both of these nations still have lots of strategic weapons, and that their political interests are not exactly aligned with ours.

I think the upshot is that we have to continue to be good at everything. Combined-arms ops and mechanized infantry stuff particularly. But we can't let our blue-water Navy wither on the vine, because I have a feeling that should we ever mix it up with nation like Russia or China, it will be the Navy and Air Force, not the Army, that is decisive.

McKiernan also kept calling for more troops. Obama is delivering some but not as many as McKiernan wanted. That could be mighty, um, inconvenient, for an administration that ran on, 'more resources for Afghanistan' and beat up Bush for not giving previous commanders there what they asked for.

Maybe Karzai's call was simply useful.

As Jean said, it is crazy complicated at that level.

17 As to Petraeus, I expect the word has come down that he must be absolutely invisible for the next four years. The only publicity the general will get is blame for failures. Obama is absolutely not going to risk a real war hero running against him.

See, there's an interesting flip side to Obama's far-left policies: ANYBODY seems moderate and centrist by comparison. I know nothing about General Petraeus's domestic policy ideas, but it's mathematically certain that he's not as far to the left as Obama. If the Republicans were to get over the self-destructive "conservative purity" stuff and nominate a real hero with real intelligence, pretty much everyone in the country would flock to the banner.

22 This guy might want to count this as a blessing for him personally because Afghanistan is going to be run far too politically, and this way he specifically will not have that mark on his record.

I with one and all that finds this move disturbing if Patreaus did not ask for it or want it. Gates has been leaning in the moonbat direction for the past month, and may not be the asset we thought he might be in protecting us and the best interest of the military members.

25 I don't know if McKiernan deserved to be or needed to be replaced. I don't know if Petraeus was for it or not. But I do know that SecDef Gates is a major league, no class asshole. If you want to replace McKiernan, fine, thank him for his 37 years of service and say we need a change in direction and get on with it. Instead Gates goes out of his way to basically say what a loser McKiernan is, how bad a job he is doing, etc and that his career is "probably" over.

All this after McKiernan was only on the job in Afghanistan for 11 months. Well, Gates has been on the job for over 2 years and was around when McKiernan first got the head job in Afghanistan. So since he has been running things longer than McKiernan, when is Gates resigning?

And for anybody who thinks I should cut Gates some slack because he helped bring about victory in Iraq, guess again. Gates was not behind the surge, Bush was. Gates just carried it out. Gates was a member of the idiotic James Baker "Iraq Study Group" that didn't think a surge would work and thought the only way to have peace in Iraq was to have a "dialog" with Syria and IRAN.

For those of you who think this is all Obama's fault and Gates is just carrying it out, maybe. But if he disagrees with it, Gates could always resign in protest.

Also, this isn't the first stupid classless thing Gates has done. Remember when he fired the top civilian and military leaders of the Air Force? Again, it was not a "thanks for serving, but we need a change", it was a "public humiliation just because I can" scenario. And he has been holding a grudge against the Air Force ever since. Newsflash, we don't really know how to fight without air superiority and we don't want to learn (hint that's what the losers usually have to do!). So why would the SecDef go out of his way to trash the Air Force? Because he is a classless asshole who made it personal.

26 don't know much about McChrystal personally, but he is coming out of the Rangers (Col of the regiment, unless my memory fails me) so he has some idea of what end of the cow produces bullshit.
I'm waiting to hear that a bunch of our teams went into Pak and 'secured' some loose nukes before the Talis got 'em--we'll know that the endgame is in play at that point.
Or hopefully, it'll be so well done we never hear about it.....
