| Why Are Reporters Pretending They Don't Know Obama Will Raise Taxes on the Middle Class?Matthew Yglesias is part of the JournoList liberal pundit/reporter listserv. Indeed, the advantage of JList, members say, is that it provides a unique forum for getting in touch with historians and policy people who provide journalists with a knowledge base for articles and blog posts. Yglesias, who writes an eponymous blog hosted by the Center for American Progress, noted that “the combined membership has tentacles of knowledge that reach everywhere,” adding that “you can toss out a question about Japan or whatever and get some different points of view.”And what is on Yglesias' mind lately? What "tentacles of knowledge that reach everywhere" is he spreading out? As caught by Mickey Kaus (in yesterday's 4:02 PM entry)... While some Obama supporters deride "Tea Party" tax protests on the grounds that Obama hasn't increased taxes on the bottom "95 percent of working families" yet, the diligent Matt Yglesias is already trying to figure out which ones to raise. ... 4:02 P.M.Following that link, we find Yglesias arguing with another liberal about the best way to to secure "broad-based" new tax revenues in order to pay for Obama's health care plans... [A]s I’ve been saying, the case for such taxes [on unhealthy habits like smoking] rests on the claim that raising revenue through some source or other is going to be necessary when the recession ends. As you can see, Obama administration’s budget (demarcated with the dotted lines) leaves revenue as a percent of GDP far too low to pay for the government services we need:Now Yglesias is not exactly the most influential reporter or pundit in DC. But he is a member of the secret liberal JournoList, which includes other, not-really-super-important people like Jonathan Alter who, despite their relative lack of genuine importance, are nevertheless completely reflective of standard-issue left-liberal thought. From which we deduce that most reporters and pundits in DC are aware of the simple math involved in this problem, and know for a fact that Obama's spending plans absolutely require new "broad-based sources of revenue" and that while the rich may be taxed even more, their contributions alone will not be enough to get us anywhere near a balanced budget. But while liberal reporters and pundits debate the coming tax hikes -- usually in private and in secret -- their public announcements tend to simply repeat Obama's claim that he's not raising taxes on anyone -- "not a dime" from any sort of tax -- except the top 5% of earners. Which they know is completely false. What they say to the public -- scoffing at the Tea Party rebels for protesting tax-hikes that, supposedly, do not exist and never will -- is in complete contradiction to what they actually know -- know -- is underfoot and on Obama's agenda. It's an open secret that Obama is going to raise taxes on the middle class. Every liberal in the press corps knows this. How the hell can they justify failing to report it? The President is lying -- and the numbers prove that without any doubt whatsoever -- and instead of going after that easy-to-write scoop, they act as his press deputies, regurgitating a line they know is 100% false. And even worse -- we know the more wonkish among them are plotting precisely which taxes to raise on the middle class, and when, and by how much. They're engaged in these arguments while hiding the mosot basic truth from the public. Obama seeks to get the public "a little bit pregnant" on increased tax hikes for the middle class, by jacking up spending so high they become more or less necessary. (The possibility of cutting spending is always unlikely; especially for Mr. Transformative.) But we know even as we spend ourselves into ruin that such tax hikes are necessary-- and liberal reporters know it too. When Obama finally springs this shocking revelation on us, after the 2010 midterms or after he's been safely reelected to a second term in 2012, he will, of course, claim that the deficit situation has deteriorated far more than he expected (due, no doubt, to the evil Bush economy) and that he's utterly surprised to learn that he will, reluctantly you understand, have to ask for more sacrifice from the middle class than he ever, ever anticipated. Will the media feign shock and surprise along with him? PS: Will they also claim that President Toxic Asset has a mandate for raising taxes, because the public went along with the huge spending that made such increased taxes a necessity? That would be the double-whammy -- they support Obama in his lies as he promises to not raise taxes on the middle class, and then claim the middle class gave its blessing for such tax hikes because they knew all along what they were getting into. I imagine they'll be quite a few reporters -- including those on JournoList -- making that argument. Comments1
It's like the press corps is Obama's personal army of flying monkeys*. They simply await his orders and then off they go. Until then, no actual independent thought in public is allowed.
*No Honest Cloud, Seattle Slough and John Ryan, that's not racist. The press is the monkey in that little metaphor not Obama. Posted by: DrewM. at May 06, 2009 01:55 PM (PLGGU) 2

Will the media feign shock and surprise along with him? Of course they will. They will paint it as something he does reluctantly, and only because his back was against the wall, and darn it, he's such a fiscal disciplinarian that he just couldn't allow these massive deficits to go unaddressed. fwiw,
Back When he was running his own blog on his own site - Matt Yglesias bemoaned the fact that he didn't know about his grandfather's service during the war in a post about something Bush-related. It took me about five minutes with Dr. Google to piece together a complete summary of Matt's grandfather's service - which managed to be 1) interesting, the guy had done some pretty cool things in service to his country and 2) enlightening, in the fact that the supposably whip-smart Harvard-educated Blogger Matt Y-fucking-Glesias couldn't be bothered to Google his own grandfather's service history. When I read Yggie Stardust's blog, I keep that in mind -- he's often too disinterested or too unable to understand the search requirements to inform himself. ....' 1 no doubt. The press is clearly lying every day to the public, and Ace outlines this very clearly.
OT sorta - Indeed, the WHPC didnt have a single real question about Chrysler today - mere hours after the Administration admitted that a whopping EIGHT BILLION of loans to Chrsyler, including 3.5 billion given to Chrysler just LAST WEEK, will NOT BE REPAID. Let me repeat myself, will not be repaid. And finally, the Treasury has the audacity to claim the next 4.7 billion we hand to Fiat/Chrysler will be repaid because Treasury will get a first lien on Chrysler's assets!!!! The very same first lien position now occupied by the soon to be crammed down secured lenders who Obama demonized. Amazing. CNN: Chrysler LLC will not repay U.S. taxpayers more than $7 billion in bailout money it received earlier this year and as part of its bankruptcy filing. This revelation was buried within Chrysler's bankruptcy filings last week and confirmed by the Obama administration Tuesday. The filings included a list of business assumptions from one of the company's key financial advisors in the bankruptcy case. Some of the main assumptions listed by Robert Manzo of Capstone Advisory Group were that the Treasury would forgive a $4 billion bridge loan given to Chrysler in the closing days of the Bush administration, a $300 million fee on that loan, and the $3.2 billion in financing approved last week by the Obama administration to fund Chrysler's operations during bankruptcy. "The reality now is that the face value [of the $4 billion bridge loan] will be written off in the bankruptcy process," said the official, who added that the 8% equity stake that Treasury will be receiving as part of the company's reorganization is meant to compensate taxpayers for the lost money. "While we do not expect a recovery of these funds, we are comfortable that in the totality of the arrangement, the Treasury and the American taxpayer are being fairly compensated," said the official. The company filed for bankruptcy Thursday as part of a deal with the federal government, unions, some lenders and Italian automaker Fiat to keep the company from being shut down. The Canadian government also agreed to kick in about $900 million in bankruptcy financing. According to the filings, Chrysler's advisor assumes that this loan will be forgiven as well. The Obama administration official said that other money being made available to Chrysler, such as the $4.7 billion that will go to the company as it exits bankruptcy, will be a loan that the government expects to be paid back. In addition, that loan will be secured by company assets, unlike the previous loans to Chrysler. Posted by: Anti-Harkonnen Freedom Fighter at May 06, 2009 02:04 PM (5r0Tz) 9

I do have to admit there is a part of me that is going to enjoy the crash. Hell, I already spend way too much time trying to figure out how to preserve my wealth from what is coming. But the problem is the paramaters are impossible to figure out. Someone as thuggish as Obama *might* decide to just take everything I have and to hell with my wealth preservation strategies. One could just convert to gold and silver and hide it all, but that is tin-foil hat territory, so what are we to do? If I could offshore my money some way I would. It is a SAD FUCKING day when one trusts Europeans to preserve weath more than the USA. Of course that trust is likely naive, since the crash will be global. This is why I am less worried than some about a resurgence of conservative values. Not because we have any great spokemen about their beating the drums these days but because when the bills come due for all of Obama's shit there is gonna be an epic wake up call. And that call will start long before the mid-terms. We in MA have been treated to a preview of the Obama years with the Deval Patrick years. Raise spending, raise taxes, rewared cronies, the whole package and Patrick's popularity is in the toilet. Posted by: JackStraw at May 06, 2009 02:15 PM (VW9/y) 25

I well remember a press conference when Bill Clinton said he had "worked harder than he ever had in his life" to provide a middle class tax cut, but that (surprise, surprise) he wouldn't be able to do so because things had gotten so much worse. When a couple of reporters questioned him on his campaign promise I also remember him pointing to a line on a graph and saying "You can blame me all you like, but we're just trying to do right by the people, and I'm not the one who created that line". I predict it will be even worse when these chickens come home to roost for Obama. The toughest question he will get will be along the lines of " Mr. President, knowing how tirelessly you have worked over the past x months to revive the terrible economy you inherited, is it a disappointment to you that you are not going to be able to provide the tax cuts that you had hoped for?" Obamanation has taken the nation from a trillion in debt to over $4 trillion in debt in the first 60 days, with even more federal spending promised, which could put the nation $10 trillion in debt before the 2010 mid-term election cycle. Amnesty for illegals and ACORN led redistricting will make 2010 and beyond a moot point.
Still, beyond the movement to mail tea bags to members of congress or file another legal demand for proof of Obama’s constitutional eligibility for the office he holds, both of which are like whistling in the breeze, the people remain largely silent. Words like socialism and communism no longer have a negative connotation attached to them. Most Americans have no idea what they are anymore, or why they don’t want to find out the hard way.
The concept of liberal interpretations limits the meaning of words only to one’s individual imagination. The Constitution means only what someone imagines it to mean. If the shoe doesn’t quite fit, a new definition will solve the problem. Posted by: sickinmass at May 06, 2009 02:52 PM (/i4dU) 55

muffy,
I don’t have the answer… Frankly, I expected the people to revolt long before now. Clearly, I had underestimated the depth of apathy and tolerance for anti-American nonsense in the average modern American. But then, so did our nation’s founders, whom I’m certain are rolling over in their graves in disgust by now. Posted by: sickinmass at May 06, 2009 03:01 PM (/i4dU) 63
The MSM is simply the government's propaganda arm now. Goebbels would be so proud.

They and Bambi will hold off on new taxes until are "inevitable". Then we'll get the "most serious presidential address to the nation since Dec. 8th, 1941." This will be followed by story after storyabout how Americans want to make the sacrifice and how it's really time for "responsibility".
In the meantime, Bambi won't be raising taxes on the middle class, per se. He's just gonna jam taxes down the throats of corporations (cap-n-trade, closing "loop-holes") and suddenly everything will cost more and our money will just be filtered through the corporations. The other thing that's gonna happen is taxation through inflation. It's after these things start hitting us that they'll open up about new taxes. Sick, the average person sees everyone in Washington working to fix the problem and all agreeing. So they assume everything is fine. The only fly in that theory is that consumers are saving and not buying. Now they are going to want people to buy and people to jump into the equity market and people to buy foreclosures and take new mortgages, and they might not. They might continue to save assuming that their retirement funds are up for grabs and that SS won't help them.
Posted by: muffy at May 06, 2009 03:04 PM (zplc6) 66
Nobody knows for how long or at what expense, but so far, the people
remain silent and Washington continues to profitably interpret that
silence as broad-based consent. At this late date, I have no idea what
will wake up the average American or how they might react once finally
awake and ready to engage in self-governance.
Posted by: sickinmass at May 06, 2009 03:06 PM (/i4dU) 67
When they finally do awake, they are going to be really angry… And, the anti-American left won’t let up until then…
The clock isn’t just ticking. Time has already run out as of the 2008 election. Washington DC is currently dismantling America, individual right by individual right, in an unprecedented massive multi-faceted assault on all things American. Posted by: sickinmass at May 06, 2009 03:08 PM (/i4dU) 68
@55 muffy
So you are basically saying that people are either part of the mess or afraid to say anything about the mess at all? Pretty much. A big chunk of the 52 are hustling to get what they can while they can in the biggest smash-and-grab ever. When I saw the video of Obama telling Joe the Plumber that he was going to spread the wealth, I thought his campaign was dead. When I saw the video of the woman at the rally who said she was voting for Obama because he would pay for her gas and her mortgage, I thought his campaign was dead. In hindsight, I'm willing to bet that those videos won him net votes. The non-political are going to keep their mouths shut because they are afraid of being tagged racists. I'd bet further that a number of these idiots voted for Obama, as well, but have the decency to be ashamed of their mistake. My silence is because the odds are good that the world as we know it will soon end, and I don't want to jeopardize my ability to prepare for that scenario. If you are not familiar with the Democratic Socialists of America or their legislative branch, the Congressional Progressive Caucus, I strongly suggest that you take time to learn them well. They are in charge of our nation. This is who the average American is up against and they are a very well funded and an organized enemy of the state.
Posted by: sickinmass at May 06, 2009 03:11 PM (/i4dU) 70
Clearly, the organizational skills of the average American are equal only to that of the stumbling bumbling Republican Party. Fragmented, distracted and disorganized, the people are no match for the leftist juggernaut running roughshod in DC.

The people are lost, so they are losing… The most complex problems require the simplest of solutions. But the average American is so baffled by a daily diet of elitist B.S., that they cannot even see daylight… – When all else fails, return to the basics!
Here’s to the average American waking up in time! - Good luck! SiM Posted by: sickinmass at May 06, 2009 03:15 PM (/i4dU) 72
Some good news.. The state of Montana has signed into power a revolutionary gun law. I mean REVOLUTIONARY. The State of Montana has defied the federal government and their gun laws. This will prompt a showdown between the federal government and the State of Montana. The federal government fears citizens owning guns. They try to curtail what types of guns they can own. The gun control laws all have one common goal – confiscation of privately owned firearms. Montana has gone beyond drawing a line in the sand. They have challenged the Federal Government. The fed now either takes them on and risks them saying the federal agents have no right to violate their state gun laws and arrest the federal agents that try to enforce the federal firearms acts. This will be a world-class event to watch. Montana could go to voting for secession from the union, which is really throwing the gauntlet in Obamas face. If the federal government does nothing they lose face. Gotta love it. Posted by: sickinmass at May 06, 2009 03:19 PM (/i4dU) 73
Why Are Reporters Pretending They Don't Know Obama Will Raise Taxes on the Middle Class?
Because they think we're stupid. And too many of us are proving them right. (By "us", I mean the American public at large, not AOSHQ morons.) Look! A puppy! And doesn't Michelle look great? Posted by: tsj017 at May 06, 2009 03:23 PM (TBwnU) 74
sickinmass, Don't despair. Simply prepare. Here is my reasoning: 1. We cannot ever repair the damage that progressivism has done to our institutions without first tearing them down 2. I, for one, and not willing to start the tear-down process, but I am pretty sure that this administration will trigger some event that does any day now 3. Organizing before the collapse happens can easily be characterized as conspiracy, so don't Posted by: MikeO at May 06, 2009 03:26 PM (hz67i) 75

It's far more likely that someone who can do math at the Fed will inform the Treasury Secretary that there is no more debt to be had, and that the administration is going to have to stop spending or the Fed will have to jack up interest rates. With China putting its national wallet back in its pants, I'm thinking this will come sooner rather than later. This explains the rush to federalize as much as possible as fast as possible, why the arm-twisting at the WH happened yesterday over cap and trade, and why the beginnings of national health care are being pushed by Baucus and others, who are trying desperately to explain to the CBO that while the math doesn't work the politics does.
The best thing that could happen to the country is for the Fed to turn off the facuet now, for a sale of our 10-year T-bills to fall flat this year, instead of a couple of years for now when we're another several trillion in debt. While I am not in favor of abortion, these programs are a couple of early terminations I'd be glad to see. This administration is spending money so fast it makes the Chinese communists worry, and with the treatment Chrysler bondholders are getting, I'd be worried if I had sunk a large portion of my country's wealth into T-bills as well. Some holders of debt are more equal than others. The optimal scenario is that Obama gets halfway done with Europeanization (the taxing part) before the money runs out before the "benefits" arrive. This may allow people to really grasp that no, they can't get something for nothing from the government. A little squeeze of inflation from one end, a bigger tax bill from the other and people might (MIGHT) realize that their government is far too large, far too authoritarian, far too in debt. This is the kind of vaccination from magical liberal thinking that lasts a generation. All we need now is a credible opposition party that can articulate this. Too bad we don't have one. sickinmass, The dead horse I've been beating for the last couple of months is about preparing mindset. When something that the 21st Hijacker brings upon us triggers declaration of martial law and the suspension of civil liberty, should you cooperate, or should you resist? Please don't answer. Just think about it every day. If you guess wrong one way, you get tried and imprisoned or executed. If you guess wrong the other way, your bleached bones will adorn some killing field after you've been re-educated to death by your self-styled betters. muffy, Try this on for size. The government and "investors" buy the so called toxic assets at 25 cents (or whatever) on the dollar. The decent assets get resold at a profit, and the government and the investors split the profits from the sale of the decent assets. The taxpayers take the haircut on the truly lousy assets. That hopey and changey enough for ya? Posted by: RM at May 06, 2009 03:42 PM (1kwr2) 79

"I really like that Mickey Kaus."
I like how he takes after Sullivan and exposes the JournList douches, but man is he in the tank when it comes to government healthcare. He was on with Hugh Hewitt a few weeks back, and I was floored with how delusional he was on the matter. Kaus's position re government healthcare is this: just do it. Just do it, get everybody covered and worry about how to pay for it later. The man has no interest in thinking it through rationally. Posted by: Kensington at May 06, 2009 04:03 PM (qZw/x) 81

I'm with you sickinmass and MikeO....something evil is brewing. People around me are starting to wake up...slowly. Good, law-biding, family and God focused conservatives who thought I was off my rocker last fall when trying to educate them about Obama and encourage them to talk to fence-sitters last fall are now asking me about how to stockpile food and water and what weapons to buy. They are about 6 months late to the game but at least they are awake, fully aware of the Marxist coup under way. What Dear Leader and his minions are doing now was all there last summer and fall for anyone wanting to find it. The pace at which they are operating (set forth by George W, makes you wonder, huh?) is not by chance. They are moving so fast so that 2010 elections will be rendered meaningless, if they aren't already. But aside from the daily events, something is just plain wrong with what's going.....just that gut feeling. Whether you think Dear Leader is a natural born citizen or not, it's the fact that we know nothing about this man (transcripts, medical records, etc....) and EVERYTHING he is doing is the exact opposite of what should be done in the best interest of this country and her people. Something is just really, really wrong with what's going on. Something sick and evil is brewing. I don't know what it is but people better prepare, mentally, physically, and spiritually for anything because I fear whatever we think it brewing maybe be far worse simply because of what's been done so far and so fast in the first 3 months of this coup.

I don’t know what it will take to wake up the average American, but whatever it is, it hasn’t happened yet…
They're not going to wake up. Maybe not ever. From what I can tell, from my insane blue state perspective, at least 52% of America doesn't want to work. Ever. They will do anything, and I mean anything, for the promise of free money. And a free house. And gas. And food. And health care. Obama has promised them all of that, so they will go to the ends of the earth, and sacrifice anything for him, so they can live a life of leisure. They don't realize that there is no life of leisure, that it's all an illusion. Doesn't matter to them. They want a free ride. They will never abandon that dream. And that's what terrifies me. I am surprised they were able to rise for their leader given that they
all had boners just thinking about his dreamy pecs and golden thighs.
I'm surprised they didn't click their heels, thrust their right arms and chant Seig Heil The reason the DemSM tools easily go along with this is they still believe it won't impact them personally, or nothing more than "the price of a cup of Starbucks" per day. They also cling to that "good government" belief that those tax hikes will come back to them equally in the form of "services". Being bored today I ran some numbers on what kind of tax would be needed on the top 5% to fund a $1 Trillion deficit, assuming a 100% tax on gross family income.
I was surprised to find that it would be easier to go from the bottom up, since everyone starts at the bottom - a $1 Trillion deficit would amount to a 100% tax of the gross income of the bottom 40,000,000 of American families - no roof over your head, no food, no clothes, no medicine, 100% of the entire families income. Figuring 4 members per household, Barry just enslaved 1/2 of all Americans. But is only for a year that they do not have to eat or have a roof over their heads. I almost agree. Just keep the insurance private. Make it mandatory. Pay for people below a certain line, say 1.5 X poverty. Stop the mandates. Make it a nationwide market. Make benefits taxable and portable. Eliminate medicare and medicaid - as those people would get their vouchers to spend on any plan they wanted. Get healthcare off the table, while keeping it as free market as possible.. Sure this would cost money, but I think it might be wise to nip this in the bud before it leads to even more socialism. Many people are worried about their health care coverage and losing their job. This would mollify them. Posted by: sexypig at May 06, 2009 10:31 PM (dEM8D) 98
