| Specter To Become A Democrat (Officially)![]() Some in the Republican Party are happy about this. I am not. Let’s be honest-Senator Specter didn’t leave the GOP based on principles of any kind. He left to further his personal political interests because he knew that he was going to lose a Republican primary due to his left-wing voting record. Republicans look forward to beating Sen. Specter in 2010, assuming the Democrats don’t do it first. Comments1

Still, the Democrats may be about to get a filibuster-proof majority, so we'll get to spend the next couple of years watching them fuck everything up. We can wash our hands of the bullshit that Congress does, and we basically get an "I told you so" moment when it all goes wrong in the end and the population comes back to us.

Hey "Realist Republicans Who Think It Doesn't Matter Who They Elect As Long As There's An (R) After Their Name": Ummm... how's that working for you?
This is actually a very good thing. The Democrats already have a 62-seat majority. They have had it since last November. Some of the more delusional jackasses out there have been in denial about this, but hopefully this will slap them in the face with a little reality. It's not about the brand. It's about philosophy and character. The sooner the dipshit wing of the Republican Party figures this out, the sooner they'll find their way out of this mess. By switching brands, Specter actually makes himself easier to un-elect, because the fucktards who vote for any piece of shit with an (R) after their name will now scratch their inbred heads, look quizzically at their ballot, and then vote for somebody else. Since then (his vote for the stimulus), I have traveled the State, talked to Republican leaders and
office-holders and my supporters and I have carefully examined public
opinion. It has become clear to me that the stimulus vote caused a
schism which makes our differences irreconcilable. On this state of the
record, I am unwilling to have my twenty-nine year Senate record judged
by the Pennsylvania Republican primary electorate. I have not
represented the Republican Party. I have represented the people of
Pennsylvania...
...I now find my political philosophy more in line with Democrats than Republicans.... So what's this all about for Specter? Socialized Health Care & Sweet Sweet Pork: I take on this complicated run for re-election because I am deeply concerned about the future of our country and I believe I have a significant contribution to make on many of the key issues of the day, especially medical research. NIH funding has saved or lengthened thousands of lives, including mine, and much more needs to be done. And my seniority is very important to continue to bring important projects vital to Pennsylvania's economy. Posted by: Deety at April 28, 2009 11:23 AM (aVzyR) 62
My change in party affiliation does not mean that I will be a

Key quote from Specter this morning: "Since my election in 1980, as part of the Reagan Big Tent, the Republican Party has moved far to the right." What exactly is this man talking about? Ronald Reagan was pro-life, anti-big government, pro 2nd Amendment, etc. This universally propogated narrative that the GOP was soooo moderate thirty years ago, and is sooooo right wing now is a bunch of horseshit. It isn't backed up by reality. You need only look at the Bush years of out of control spending and entitlement growth to realize that. Posted by: Reggie1971 at April 28, 2009 11:25 AM (b68Df) 69

Good. I hope those two stupid women from Maine follow his his lead. I will send them an invitation to do so.
It's a start to cleansing the filth that has plagued the GOP for years. I know, I know, that makes it an overwhelmingly clear majority for the Democrats. So be it. Let THEM solely own their destructive ideals. Of course, most of the voting population is so ignorant they won't even notice what's been taken away from them. Unfortunately, it appears that most people will be perfectly comfortable with a socialist state, and thus, never care. Posted by: kasper at April 28, 2009 11:25 AM (+pMZ4) 72

Toomey can't beat a healthy Specter. Toomey has an outside chance against a no-name Dem, but Pennsylvanians vote for who they know. This is why Santorum, who managed a couple of easy wins went down hard to a Casey.
Frankly, I don't know why an 80-year-old cancer patient is so desperate to stay in the Senate but it's pretty clear that the Dems are giving him a clear path in the primary. Well, at least the DNC will. After the initial euphoria, the moonbats will smell blood and might try to run a Ned Lamont type against Specter. They've spent a long time hating him too. Why not, if a D is such a sure thing in PA? Unlike in the case of CT, Toomey can win a 3-way race. Posted by: AmishDude at April 28, 2009 11:27 AM (T0NGe) 80

I'm curious about he is going to play this, now that the penny drops, and it is clear that political expediency is the driving force for Specter. Will the Dems give him a free primary to get him on the ticket? Or will he turn hard left to get the nomination then try and run back to the center for the general election. Is he going to flip/flop on card check to get union campaign support? So many questions. It's better than a cliff hanger from Lost. I hope real conservatism comes out of the woodwok for this one and turns back this fillibuster proof Senate. This will clearly be the big ralley for 2010.

Most after four decades in politics would decide it's been a good run and to hang it up and hit the talk circut and Sunday shows. Throw in being 80 years old and fighting cancer for most would be the proverbial straw. Not for this idiot. Power Power Power.

To everyone who thinks card check is a done deal, I wouldn't be so sure. Oh please. How stupid does this guy think we are? He's clearly only interested in self-preservation, knowing that if he stays in the Republican party he won't last another day as 2010 approaches. Switching Democrat is in no way a method to solidify his "political philosophy" as it is a means to stay in power and keep his paycheck. If we keep losing these "moderates" and shedding them from the party mold, we might finally make a break for a real GOP revival. The likes of which we haven't seen in years. This can only backfire. Any man who is under 30, and is not a liberal, has no heart; and any man who is over 30, and is not a conservative, has no brains. Spector said this on March 17th:
[Democrats] are trying very hard for the 60th vote. Got to give them credit for trying. But the answer is no. I'm not going to discuss private talks I had with other people who may or may not be considered influential. But since those three people are in the public domain, I think it is appropriative to respond to those questions. I am staying a Republican because I think I have an important role, a more important role, to play there. The United States very desperately needs a two-party system. That's the basis of politics in America. I'm afraid we are becoming a one-party system, with Republicans becoming just a regional party with so little representation of the northeast or in the middle atlantic. I think as a governmental matter, it is very important to have a check and balance. That's a very important principle in the operation of our government. In the constitution on Separation of powers. Now, eh not so much. Posted by: Rocks at April 28, 2009 11:54 AM (Q1lie) 142

Conservatives and conservatism is incapable of "drifting rightward". It implies change in principles, and that is not even a part of what "conservative" means, for crying out loud. Leftism, "progressivism", neo-socialism, et al, are defined by change. What is acceptable and even laudable one year is planned and expected to be "too right-wing" just seven to ten years later. Fascism, the left's favorite cuss word, is just another species of leftism. It's Mensheviks versus Bolsheviks - both are groups of fuckheaded tyrannical douchebags, but one is seen as more "right wing" than the other. They're all enemies of Liberty. And all of them; fascist, communist, socialist, progressive; all of the are left wingers. To the right of the Republican party is the domain of the people who want zero federal government, or even a return to the Articles of Confederation. Beyond those fringers are the extreme libertarian anarchists. We don't have anything to do with any fucking fascists. Every single fascist is a fucking leftist. They're just open with their sado-masochistic fashion sense. Specter is just a leftwing fuckjob trying as always to smear good Americans who have more guts and principles than he ever will have. I think Specter, if he didn't get a guarantee of an unopposed primary from the Ds will find out about how unpalatable moderates have become to the Ds. There are no JFKs left in the party. As the Rs remained mostly steady (we have moved a little left since Reagan), and the Ds moved left, this gap has formed in the US where moderates try to stand and find very little support. Now that he has to deal with the hyper-partisan Ds, who tolerate dissent like a badger tolerates company, his days of mild rebukes from conservative Rs for not voting our way will seem like a fond memory... unless he makes throws that rudder over hard left....which I am not counting out......but that also opens the door for a conservative win of his seat.

Uh, sorry, no, Arlen, that's not at all what's happened to The Big Tent of Republicanism. We on the right haven't changed: we still believe in limited government, low taxes, a strong national defense and individual freedoms. We have, however, watched as the Dems have sailed over the horizon toward every failed fairyland leftist idea imaginable. For example... 9-11 Troofers are primarily Dems. Abortion supporters are primarily Dems. Global warmists are primarily Dems. Kenesians are primarily Dems. Universal Healthcare is a Dem creation. I could go on, but you get the gist of my argument. Democrats live in some sort of dreamland of the mind, and as that sort of non-thinking proliferates, the number of absurd ideas grows with it. So, no, Arlen, what has changed has been the IQ's of those on the left. They've all gone way down in the last 20 years.

thereby give Demo's the filibuster proof needed to cram down the
socialist agenda down our throats?"
Yup, and Specter was really the roadblock to that, requiring token concessions for his vote and all, and putting the "Bipartisan" seal of approval on 95% of the leftist agenda. We are SOOOOOOO worse off now that the American people can see we have principals which don't include mortgaging our kids' kids' kids. We were much more inspiring when we caved to stuff that went solidly against our stated principals for government. I mean why wouldn't you vote for that party? Short run loss. Long term gain for actually having a party which has a real vision for a prosperous, free America. Posted by: Michael C Keehn at April 28, 2009 12:10 PM (0q2P7) 181

Well, at the very least Dems now own this entire mess. No "mythical" republican opposition/philibustering. Of course, 20M new voters in 2010 combined with social healthcare and no taxes for 50% of the population don't really bode well for conservative ideals. I'm glad that I got out of the US when I did.

Or will Tingles not tingle for Arlen that he is a Democrat? Sounds a tad hypocritical to me. Chrissy should run and save his party from these interlopers.

One thing about Toomey....* He ran for the US House in 1998 as a pro-choice "moderate." Shifted right when -- because he took a term limit pledge of 6 years -- he realized the only race left was vs. Specter in 2004. He's done all the right things since....but just giving some history. *Yeah, I campaigned for Toomey's main primary opponent in 1998 (the favorite) and remain a tiny bit disappointed in the outcome. Posted by: CJ at April 28, 2009 12:20 PM (9KqcB) 206
Specter saw what happened to Lieberman and chose a slightly different path.
Lieberman pissed off his party's base and lost the primary, then won re-election anyway as an independent. Specter saw that he was very likely going to lost his primary for pissing off his party's base, so--instead of running as an independent, which might have been too risky for him--he switched parties before the primary. Not much difference. Note also that by jumping to the new minority party, Specter has a shot at a powerful committee chairmanship--probably guaranteed as part of whatever sweetheart deal the Dems offered him. Don't get me wrong here; I think Lieberman was unjustly driven out of his party and Specter well deserved a primary ass-kicking. But he may have outsmarted us here. Damn it. Some in the Republican Party are happy about this. Posted by: Topsecretk9 at April 28, 2009 12:22 PM (eUAcd) 210

Mark this day: April 28th, 2009. This day is the day that the turnaround truly begins. Specter no longer feels comfortable as an R. Democrats have 60, so no excuses. 2010 will arrive soon enough. Go read the posts that Insty has up today. More than a few links to posts about a lack of connection between the base and the GOP leadership. Everybody who is paying attention is noticing this. Notice that back at the Tea Parties, there was almost a sense of relief that "Thank God there are no prominent Republican office holders trying to shoehorn in on this." Do you believe that conservative ideas are best? Do you believe that two years of liberal rule will either perpetuate this recession, or at least dull what would have been a much more resilient economic recovery? Then this is all good. Any gardner knows that if you want a healthy tree to grow as you want it, you have to prune back some of he branches. One more large unsightly branch just got pruned. Good. Now it can grow. While each member of the Senate caucuses with his Party, what each of us
hopes to accomplish is distinct from his party affiliation. The American
people do not care which Party solves the problems confronting our
nation.
Since when? Most people here are Americans, and not many seem very pleased with the way the Dems are "solving the problems confronting our nation." The next line, though, is especial rich: And no Senator, no matter how loyal he is to his Party, should or would put party loyalty above his duty to the state and nation. Republican party needs to decide what it's going to be. Personally I think it should go conservatism set the bar high, we will lose some numbers many of the squishys will leave. The tide will turn soon, the current party in power is a dangerous mistake away from losing for the next 40 years. People will turn from them like a dead skunk. The torture bs is just a distraction away from economy. The RNC needs to highlight the George Soros money dump in the party, this guy is bad news. Many countries would love to have his hide in their jails for playing with the currency.

The only thing that changed is his name tag. And desk assignment, I suppose.
If the Republicans actually cared about "filibuster proof" or anything else, they would have found a way to get to the polls and voted last november. Every special election since proves that they still don't care. Posted by: Larry Sheldon at April 28, 2009 01:04 PM (OmeRL) 285
Wendy,
Heh. The fact that you are virtually unopposed means several things. 1. You will get to implement every part of that radical agenda you have been dreaming of. 2. As a result of your unfettered power, America will more quickly cool to your socialist ambitions, and start the swing back sooner. Retaking seats in 2010 with real conservatives is not as far fetched as it was. 3. As stimulus proved you already had a filibuster proof senate. Now your agenda will not have any "bipartisanship" to it. 4. So go ahead, ratchet the top marginal rate back to 75%. Hand out more entitlements. Tax and spend like it's 1977. We'll be in touch in 1980. The best argument for conservatism, is the real world results of liberalism. Don't let that slow you down though. I'm sure YOU can do it better than everyone else in human history who has tried it. Posted by: Michael C Keehn at April 28, 2009 01:07 PM (0q2P7) 286
Interesting how the girl on FNC instantly blamed the conservatives for someone else's behavior. Basically saying they "will win the battle but lose the war". This really give you republicans and conservatives something to think about since it appears it is no longer important to have a party affiliation except to allow you to be in the election. What appears to be paraount is keeping the power at any cost, even if that cost is your honor.

Ok, I don't get it... what is up with some posters here complaining that Steele, or the braintrust or some group couldn't keep this guy with the (R) after his name while voting for every Democrat wishlist item for years?
Seriously, what the hell would be the point of keeping a guy who claims to be on your side while doing everything the other side would want him to do? Is it because it helped prevent the election of someone who would actually be on our side? I mean yes it's certainly great to keep your enemies close and your friends completely out of politics while losing issues, and hemorrhaging voter confidence... but just for a moment; consider an alternative. If the Republican brand is ever going to be "Fiscal Conservative" again, you do realize that Republicans who rail and vote against Fiscal Conservatism are sort of a bad thing damaging the brand, yes? So, is having a brand that has credibility on fiscal issues and spending worth having, or would you rather have Collins, Snowe, and Specter? You can't keep both. Oh who am I kidding, obviously you're right. What we need are non-Republicans with the (R) after their name passing Democrat legislation and pissing on any respectability the party might have. Only by accepting those who will destroy us from the inside and drive away the base can we "win"... I mean it's worked great so far. Well sure it looks bad now, but once we spend our way out of debt you'll see how we can lie, cheat, and steal our way to respectable credibility. Just you wait and see. Seriously, to those mourning the loss of Specter, is this the plan; or is it something even more fucking stupid? Posted by: Gekkobear at April 28, 2009 01:12 PM (X0NX1) 289

Obviously, Patrick J. Leahy isn’t about to give up his chairmanship at Judiciary and with today’s announcement, Specter can’t keep the Rank Member position, so what exactly did Specter gain in the short run ?
Shouldn't he have waited till the filing deadline in PA before announcing ? For Pennsylvanians, Specter screwed his pivotal position that could have given him incredible leverage in the Senate so he could run again. Posted by: Neo at April 28, 2009 01:41 PM (5d1ix) 314

We lost the Republic in the last election. Everything after that point is just the death throes of a country committing suicide. I don't think we will ever get the country back because the ratchet only turns one way. Once more than half of the population has taken part in robbing the remainder and comes to depend on them like some form of parasite there is no going back. They have tasted the forbidden fruit and they cannot untaste it. They are cannibals and they will not stop until all is consumed. Eventually they will turn on each other but by that point it will be too late. And as they pick their teeth with the bones of their neighbor they will wonder just where it all went wrong as if they had no role in it whatsoever.

Party i.d. aside, this pos represent's exactly what is wrong in both parties, sychophant miscreant's who serve their own special interest's instead of the folk's who got em' there and believe a job in government is a lifetime entitlement benefit.
Ironic that ol' Arlen was calling for legislation preventing just exactly what he did today, when Jefford's did it back in '01. Ironic ? Nah, not hardly, Specter's a raging hypocrite without moral's. It's quite fitting this crapweasel will finally attach the (D) to his name just like that other hot steaming pile of Pa. dung, Murtha. Good riddance Arlen. I am so glad cancer didn't do you in like I had hoped. At least then you may have went out with a shred of dignity, you spineless bastard. Posted by: Blazer at April 28, 2009 07:46 PM (+FzLa) 370
If you want to be ill go to the National Review site where they all appear to fall into the "this is really bad because Arlen had an R next to his name, nevermind that he didn't vote like one" camp. Ramesh in particular is pounding the Club For Growth is bad meme. And if that isn't bad enough you have Lowry (the editor in chief) calling O's first 100 days a big success.

good let the purge continue get rid of snow and collins. let the dems fuck up this country with 15% unemployment and 15% inflation and 2 trillion deficits. we need a
radical realignment with conservatives running the whole show and it will not happen until this son of a bitch hits rock bottom. I don't see any other way. Posted by: pby at April 28, 2009 08:36 PM (TsRLp) 372
TERM LIMITS:
I used to follow George Will's proscription against term limits. Agreeing that term limits come at the ballot box. Now that I've grown up I see that the power, resources and the abuse of power that comes with and from incumbency is overwhelming and unfair. It changes and controls the system. Career politicians end up serving mainly themselves and their benefactors, not their constituents (I should know, Chris Dodd is one of my senators and the other one is kind of an independent, like Specter). If term limits are good for the president and the mayor of New York (kind of), then they're good for all levels and branches of government, with the possible exception of the judiciary. Our governments will not collapse without these hacks, and in fact it may actually help government serve the people rather than the other way around. I'm willing to try. And the online ammo companies are once again barraged for ammo they don't have. Filibuster-proof supermajority? Oh boy. We'll have the United States of Ameri-K-a before you know it.
Thanks Specter, you filching fuck. Forget that last nail in the coffin. I'd like to stick it through your eye, instead. Posted by: Stitches at April 28, 2009 11:51 PM (KyqYb) 375
As a lifelong resident of Pennsylvania, I can honestly say the state would be better off without him. Let him go, and let the Dems take Snowe and Collins with him.

Let 'em have Specter the Defector. Now they have Gore the Whore, Teddy the Tipper and Harry the Horse's Ass. What a group to kiss the ring of the Halfrican-American. Then there's Persimmon Pussy Pelosi the madam of the House of Ill Repute. We now truly have a Disneyland East (aka Washington, D.C.)

From National review: Between serving on the Warren Commission and becoming a senator, Specter was twice elected district attorney in Philadelphia, where he earned a tough-on-crime reputation. His most famous case, however, came in 1979, when he was in private practice and thinking about running for the Senate. A man named Ira Einhorn, better known as the "Unicorn," had been arrested for the murder of his girlfriend; she had been missing for a year and a half when police found her mummified corpse squeezed into a trunk hidden in Einhorn's closet. Einhorn was a celebrated leftist and is credited with helping found Earth Day. He also had strong ties to Philadelphia elites — a group of people Specter was cultivating for his prospective Senate campaign when he agreed to become Einhorn's lawyer. At an arraignment, the government demanded a $100,000 bail for Einhorn. Before Judge William Marutani, Specter called this "excessively excessive" and insisted on a reduced figure. Marutani wondered if Einhorn might "split for parts unknown." He mentioned Norway as a possible destination. "I have to disagree with your last statement," replied Specter. "Anybody is as likely to go to Norway as anybody else." Through the future senator's efforts, Einhorn's bail was dropped to $40,000. The accused man only had to put out ten percent of it in cash to secure his release. As things turned out, Specter was proven correct: Einhorn didn't flee for Norway. He went to Sweden instead, slipping out of the United States shortly before his murder trial was scheduled to begin. Einhorn remained a fugitive until 1997, when police found him living in France under a phony name with his Swedish wife. He was eventually extradited to the United States. In 2002, he was convicted of murder and sentenced to life in prison. Specter, who quit the case soon after the bail hearing and rarely has spoken about it since, says he has no regrets about representing Einhorn or demanding the reduced bail. "If I had been D.A., I would have had him detained — there would have been no bail at all," he told me in an interview last year. But by 1979, the tough-on-crime prosecutor had become a tough-on-prosecutor criminal defender. Perhaps he was just doing his job. It must be remembered, however, that his job, for which he volunteered possibly to curry favor with potential political supporters, involved reducing bail for a murderer who fled from justice.

Among all the comments and commentary, the one question I have not seen raised is why does a 79-year old man think he should continue being a senator. Doesn't the time come for the old to step aside and make way for the new? No eighty-year old is as mentally sharp as they were when they were 6o. How many senile senators do we really need?
