| "Government-Sponsored Photo Op"The first report was that NYC was terrified for a photo op. Over at Hot Air, I read the word was being put out that it was some kind of "readiness" exercise -- which is cute spin, implying that people were at least terrified over something useful. Nope, it's a frigging photo op:It wasn't an attack, or even a drill -- it was a government sponsored photo op.The Statue of Liberty is a nice touch, for extra drama and terror. Know how to make people really scared? Put a 747 on an intercept course with a major element of the New York skyline. The F-16 chasing it, almost as if it's about to shoot it down and rain steel and jet fuel over the city, demonstrates Obama's attention to detail. WSJ says it was a photo op, too. Well. Obama got his photo op, didn't he? The screaming, running, terrified Manhattanites makes for a great picture. Thanks to AHFF Geoff and Locus. More: WH Wanted to Update Its File Photo of Air Force One Buzzing the Statue of Liberty: Update it. As in, they already have several. But those were from the nasty Bush Administration (or, more likely, before; I doubt Bush got the chance before 9/11). So the NOTUS (Narcissist of the United States) decided it was about time he buzzed NYC, so he could have his pretty picture. Comments1

Nice post Ace.
The lefties on sites like ABC and Politico are surrendering and saying Obama was a douchebag for this. I have a theory, which perhaps would explain Obama's actions today and expand this story to do some popularity reducing on Obama. Remember, the guy who took the fall is Louie Cabrera, who went to law school at Harvard same time as Obama, was Sec of Army under Clinton, and then was law school professor since bush took over, as well as on the board of a major publishing company. So what is Cabrera doing? He's getting the media package Obama needs - but why now, why NYC, why the Statue of Liberty? There is no rational reason other than base politics - perhaps use of the photos in fundraising or other political communication via Organizing for America or just the White House web site. Perhaps for the 9/11 anniv this year? That's the real story, Obama's base political thuggery, in the midst of a bad recession and his 'superbusy' first 100 days just so he can have a good media package ready for the 9/11 anniv. What other explanation is there? Posted by: Anti-Harkonnen Freedom Fighter at April 27, 2009 05:46 PM (5r0Tz) 13
It's the non-stop smooth professionalism he and his administration of super-geniuses exude that's funny. It's like scary-funny or something, like they are robots. Nobody could be this perfect. Haha, funny, I'm nervously laughing even now.

Anyone still think this Unicorn in the Oval Stables isn't a fascist, with shows of military power close behind? Check out Kudlow on the NRO blog list, in the Corner. Just a taste of our corporatist fascism, brought to you by Buzzy, the Fly By Night President:
"What is going on in this country? The government is about to take over GM in a plan that completely screws private bondholders and favors the unions. Get this: The GM bondholders own $27 billion and they’re getting 10 percent of the common stock in an expected exchange. And the UAW owns $10 billion of the bonds and they’re getting 40 percent of the stock. Huh? Did I miss something here? And Uncle Sam will have a controlling share of the stock with something close to 50 percent ownership. And no bankruptcy judge. So this is a political restructuring run by the White House, not a rule-of-law bankruptcy-court reorganization..." Posted by: George Orwell at April 27, 2009 05:46 PM (AZGON) 16

It was a majestic moment. The President's airplane, swooping with such ease, through the beautiful New York City skies, much like the days of old, when the king's carriage would be driven through the towns and the people would rush to catch a glimpse of it, hoping against hope that their Beloved Leader would be inside.
I have never witnessed such a caring, giving and completely selfless act by a sitting President in all of my years. In fact, just watching the enchanted aircraft of our Savior passing overhead and feeling the rumble that was created by the amazing strength and power of those enchanting engines, which have carried His Grace aloft lo these many times during His very young, yet incredibly successful reign, was enough to cause me to reach orgasm multiple times, with nary a single touch of His finger needed to manipulate my otherwise dry and aging clitoris. WASHINGTON – An administration official says a presidential Boeing 747 and a fighter jet flew low near ground zero in New York City Monday because the White House Military Office wanted to update its file photo of the president's plane near the Statue of Liberty. This official said the White House Military Office told the Federal Aviation Administration that it periodically updates file photos of Air Force One near national landmarks, like the statute in New York harbor and the Grand Canyon. Isn't it fabulous how Obama has reconciled with our enemies and put fear into the hearts of Americans? Does any image illustrate so neatly the wrongheadedness and recklessness of the Obama administration than Americans scrambling in terror from a joyriding Air Force One? You can almost see a cartoon bubble sprouting from the jumbo jet saying, "What me worry?"
White House Military Office director Louis Caldera issued a brief statement: “Last week, I approved a mission over New York. I take responsibility for that decision,” he said. “While federal authorities took the proper steps to notify state and local authorities in New York and New Jersey, its clear that the mission created confusion and disruption. I apologize and take responsibility for any distress that flight caused" In other words, Caldera was ordered to fall on his own spear to spare Obama from embarassment, as usual for his staff. For Obama, the buck stops There. Call it friendly fire. I just hope we have enough troops to sacrifice to cover Obama's screw-ups. Fortunately, this was not an act of terror, only a man-made disaster. The problem lies not with President Obama, of course, but rather with all those poor, deluded people at Ground Zero who didn't get the memo that the Global War on Terror is over, downgraded to overseas contingency operations. There is nothing to fear but fear, right? Right? While this plays now as farce, it will be seen later as foreshadowing tragedy. Posted by: Tantor at April 27, 2009 06:43 PM (CVue7) 59

Another unimagined error from the Obama team. Each with their own unique, horrific consequences. Beautiful evil at times. anyway: Doesn't this error cause real short-term panic while it acts as a very effective false alarm that could reduce public reaction to a real attack? Sadly Obama tema frequency-of-error rate does not seem to be decreasing over the last 100 days. Since errors arrive with almost sicking clockwork predictablity, I wonder what is next?

It's also the first stop on the PATH train from WTC to Newark. A lot of downtown office workers were ferried nearby on the morning of 9/11/2001 to escape the carnage brought by the Dali Bama's friends. Posted by: sickinmass at April 27, 2009 07:37 PM (/i4dU) 95
Has Charles at LGF blamed Ron Paul or Nazis for the fact that people are simply pissed off about this? You know some shitty Fox News rabble-rouser is just pumping this idiot airplane non-story. Perhaps some Tea Party organizer or douchebag creationist staged the whole airplane episode to get marijuana legalization or gay marriage or "skinny-creepy-self-obsessed-old-guy-pony-tail-biker-day" off the ballot in California for 2010. A Lesson in Media Bias:
NY Post and NY Daily News: Both have Front Page stories with headlines saying the planes were AF1. CNN online: White House apologizes for low-flying jets. Awwwww, they're so sweet for apologizing. USA Today: Headline says "Low-flying planes cause scare in NYC." No mention where the planes came from until the 2nd paragraph. NY Times online: No story. Nothing to see here. These are not the droids you're looking for. Headlines "Obama acts to ease flu fears" (I shit you not), "Indiana Town appreciates Obama, Stimulus Cash," "Doctor Shortage Proves Obstacle To Obama Goals," and "Obama is nudging views on race." This is a paper IN NEW YORK CITY, I may remind you. Posted by: Bender Bending Rodriguez at April 27, 2009 10:04 PM (Hk0E1) 125

Bah, I posted in the wrong thread earlier. Lemme add it here, for the record:
NBC 11o'clock news (Philadelphia): Story about planes not played till the second half of the broadcast. Segment lasted about 15 seconds. Event described as "photo op planned by the federal government". Obama never mentioned once. Story about teens who like their ipods too much lasted about 2 minutes, and story about a video of some cops arresting some people outside a concert (with absolutely nothing else notable happening, no official complaints about their behavior, nothing) got higher billing and at least twice a long a segment. Insane. Qwinn Posted by: Qwinn at April 27, 2009 10:22 PM (/y1J0) 127

Did he not have a single thought about anyone else but himself- did he think about how anyone could possibly react to this? He's so cold that he can't even empathize with the people who lived through our country's worst terrorist attack. IMO, he really doesn't give a shit about anyone or anything except himself. This, after the "I have a gift" statement really puts me over the edge with how egomaniacal he is. And who in their right mind wants a photo of a commercial airplane buzzing NYC anyway? How to spin? -Some Bush holdover makes a stupid decision to do the flyover and does not consult the Lightworker. The Lightworker is rightly furious. -Bunch of wingnuts in the Bush administration have scared everyone by playing on people's fears for the past eight years, so now people run from their own shadows. Only to be expected. -Bumbling pilots from the Bush administration, both of whom were fired immediately. The reason they were there is that Bush bankrupted the military with the Iraq war, so we have severe manpower shortages and lack of competent people. Obama working on fixing the problem STAT. - "This was not a 'photo-op'. The Obama administration does not do photo ops. Mr. Obama is far too busy doing the people's business for that type of nonsense." -This points out the slipshod lack of preparedness by the previous administration. Thank God there was not a real incident, Bush would have blood on his hands. -Best case, Mr. Obama shows he isn't afraid to tackle tough problems in his own administration, getting personally involved when there is a breakdown. Worst case, a bit of sloppiness far down the line, with Rahm Immanuel kicking complacent paper pushers' behinds out the door. Bottom line, a net plus for the Lightworker after perhaps the toughest 100 days ever for a new President. "Pitch perfect." Posted by: RM at April 27, 2009 11:19 PM (GkYyh) 134
Finally we have a President willing to use his office and Administration to keep the public focused on terrorism, staging a fake attack on NYC with his own plane and staff if need be.
Sure we had Bush's supposed "fear-mongering"; but nobody paid attention or cared. Did Bush do this? No, of course not. Bush was a pansy on Terrorism compared to Obama. A few more WH staged attacks on prime targets and people will again be thinking of terrorism. Its brilliant, and truly more impressive the way he then castigates his own staff for this... wait, he doesn't like the plan? What the hell is wrong with him. Finally someone is willing to make the people reconsider 9/11 and terrorism by staging a terrorism scare, sponsored by the Government; and Obama disapproves? Well, he's clearly not the President I thought he was. How disappointing, maybe he is stupid instead of Machiavellian after all. I thought we finally had a President really willing to use the Rovian plots that Bush was too weak to use; I mean staging a fake terrorism attack is on page 47 of Rove's... But I've said too much. No I haven't seen the plans and blueprints for the Rovian master scheme; nevermind. I was never here, and I didn't work for Kinko's for a weekend under an assumed name... although you'd think Rove would do his own photocopying; I mean sometime the guy is just lazy. Anyhow, forget I said anything, this was clearly a misunderstanding all around. Damn, time to move again. Posted by: Gekkobear at April 27, 2009 11:22 PM (j1RvX) 135

This suggests an opening skit for Saturday Night Live with their Obama lookalike.
Speaking from Air Force One, the President of the United States. "My fellow Americans. On September 11, 2001 Islamic fanatics staged a series of attacks against our country and murdered thousands of our fellow citizens. At the time we all felt shock and anger and a determination to do whatever it took to defeat this new enemy that we had overlooked for far too long. "In the years since that attack, many people seem to have forgotten the shock and horror of that day. After all, you voted against a man with decades of military experience and made me President. In order to remind Americans of the dangers that we still face in a world where the religious fanatics who attacked us have still not been vanquished, I will be conducting a series of demonstrations to highlight those threats we still face." Turns over shoulder to pilot, "OK, Hank. Let's take this baby down and buzz Wall Street." "Yes sir, Mr.President." Posted by: Gilligan at April 28, 2009 06:41 AM (LXnKi) 148

Obama's First 100 Days: Nullius in verba.
Has globalisation made us more catastrophe-prone? By Andrew Marshall, The Independent, 27 Apr 09 [quote] The complexity that makes financial shocks more potentially dangerous also means that pandemics can wreak greater havoc. And beyond the immediate catastrophe, an overriding risk from both the financial crisis and any pandemic is that it causes a worldwide retreat from globalisation, with profound long-term consequences for the world economy. In its 2007 report on global risks, the World Economic Forum imagined the consequences of a simultaneous pandemic and global liquidity crisis - a scenario that was purely speculative then but which now seems eerily prescient. The result, it said, would be "a backlash against globalisation, which in turn compounds the hit on global demand". Across the world, it said, increased militarism and authoritarian tendencies would reshape global geopolitics. The events of the next few months may show just how accurate such a scenario could be. [end quote] Posted by: maverick muse at April 28, 2009 08:54 AM (F1b/5) 156
