Obama Stages Photo-Op, Scares the Bejebus Out of Lower Manhattan

Another example of Obama's extreme childishness and lack of regard for anyone other than his own self:

A Boeing 747 used by the president was escorted over lower Manhattan by an Air Force fighter jet Monday as part of a government photo opportunity and training mission, causing a brief panic among office workers near where hijacked passenger jets crashed into the World Trade Center on Sept. 11, 2001.

Workers from several office buildings poured out onto the streets before they learned that the flights were harmless.

John Leitner, a floor trader at the New York Mercantile Exchange Building, said about 1,000 people "went into a total panic" and ran out of the building around 10 a.m. after seeing the planes whiz by their building, near the World Trade Center site.

[...]

Another reader who responded to msnbc.com's request for photos said: "Video? Picture? Who the heck had time for that?!?!?! We were all too busy getting the heck out of the building!

"A coworker, whose desk faces the window, all of a sudden had this huge jumbo jet in his face," wrote Jenny Espinosa. "This poor kid freaked. One woman who works in our building, and is pregnant, had a panic attack and almost collapsed."

I would have probably panicked as well. We occasionally have low flying planes pass over downtown L.A. It raises my blood pressure every time. Of course, when it happens in L.A. the plane doesn't turn around and come back like this morning in Manhattan:

Among the workers who left their buildings were some at The Wall Street Journal.

Kathleen Seagriff, a staff assistant in the news rooms, said workers heard the roar of the planes and then saw them from their windows.

"They went down the Hudson, turned around and came back by the building," she said. "It was a scary scene, especially for those of us who were there on 9/11."

What jerks. Whoever approved this nonsense owes New York and New Jersey an apology.

Haven't You Heard? [ace]: It's just a "bright, sunny safe day in April 2009." We hardly need worry about people getting all verklempt about 747s buzzing skyscrapers in NYC.

I'm not sure this is something to beat Obama over the head with. I find it very unlikely he or any President is personally approving photo shoot missions with the SAM aircraft.

7 Weirdest part of the article:

The NYPD said the flight "was authorized by the FAA for the vicinity of the Statue of Liberty, with directives to local authorities not to disclose information about it, but to direct all inquiries to the FAA." Webb did not know why the public wasn't notified ahead of time.

Why wouldn't they tell people about this? That just seems strange.

8 Here's the Air Force and FAA comments....this looks like a pure politically motivated exercise to obtain propaganda pictures for Obama's use. What other possible purpose could pictures of the President's plan be for? (dems are surely inventing a story as we speak)

The U.S. Air Force, which operates the president's plane, said the
"aerial photo mission" involved an F-16 fighter jet escort and one of
the Boeing 747s designated as Air Force One when the president is
aboard. Obama was not on board.

Police said federal authorities told them not to disclose the
information ahead of time but to direct inquiries to the Federal
Aviation Administration.

The FAA called it "an approved military photo op." The White House declined to comment.

said Air Force spokeswoman Capt. Angela Webb. She declined to release

19 DrewM, don't you think this particular photo shoot location was a bit ill chosen and ill timed? If they'd needed a picture of the plane flying by the Statue of Liberty, perhaps they could've done it on a weekend when office workers who lived through the horror of 9/11 weren't in the buildings in lower Manhatten.
If they absolutely had to do the photo opportunity but were worried about risk i.e. terrorists using it somehow, they could've at least given the office workers 15 minutes warning it was coming. Not enough time for anyone to act, but enough notice to not have people panic.
I think it was ill done and I do think someone owes the people in Manhatten an apology.

59 It never occurred to them to do this on a Saturday or Sunday?

You know...I bet it never did. Bammer's leading the most self-involved, sublimely clueless batch of functionaries I can remember. One of the classic signs of narcissistic behavior is an inability to see consequences in any behavior that are not related to oneself. The world is just the stage upon which Bammer prances, and we are the genuflecting extras.

I've seen this behavior in clinical sociopaths as well. They not only have problems with empathy, but actually cannot comprehend a world in which they are not the central focus. Every problem and setback is a personal affront because (since it happened to them) it must be deliberate. They see machinations and evildoing everywhere. Any opponent is by definition evil -- just for opposing them. The scary thing about these people is that they can be quite high-functional. Many high-profile Hollywood stars are clinical sociopaths; and many politicians and soldiers (MacArthur and Curtis LeMay spring to mind). These people are dangerous because they do not think in the normal "greater good" calculus. They are prone to take slights personally, to overreact to setbacks, and to embark on grandiose projects that (they believe) will bring them recognition and glory.

I don't know how far down the path from narcissism to full-blown sociopathy Obama has gone, but he's already far enough down that road to frighten me.

Sociopaths in positions of power ought to frighten everyone. These personality types have the capability of murdering in the millions to achieve their ends: Mao, Stalin, Hitler, Alexander the Great, Catharine the Great, and several Roman emperors (Nero and Caligula most famously, but I'd add Octavian and even Julius Caesar to that list). They could cause untold calamity and death because none of it was really real to them. The soldiers and innocent civilians were just...pieces to be moved around the game-board, and disposed of when their usefulness was at an end. The aim, the object, is to increase the power and glory of the man moving the pieces around.

This is why I really despise the cultism that surrounds Obama. It feeds the sociopath like gasoline on a fire, and convinces them of their own centrality in the universe. It's dangerous as hell.

92 Bush the first didn't open his mouth until his son was elected. I wonder if bush the second will keep his mouth shut while obama is in, but then let loose the torent of criticism that Obama deserved while in.

My mom, while I was living with a friend, called me up one day during an interview with bush the first and Bab's. I just happened to be watching the interview, but ma's called me up, "Now do you know why I love that woman?" My mom's a fan of . . . what was her nickname? "The silver bird?"

Mom loves Babs Bush.

114 The price of war is not the dollars spent, but in the people lost.

The Military has always represented the best among us, and we lose our best, and we lose greatness as we spend the lives of young men(and some women) in the pursuit of our national goals.

To decry the money of war, ignoring the lose of life, unless it serves a specific purpose, ignoring the grandeur of their minds goals and honor, is a disgrace.

I know at least one person who died in Iraq, and I knew him when he was a boot, cuz I was in bootcamp with him. He was a true believer, and he died for that belief, and I don't think that if he could speak for himself that he would regret it one bit.

I also met his daughter while I was in oki with him. Cute kid, he's more fortunate than many, he lived as he believed, he left a legacy of joy behind him, and when he left this life he did it for things he loved.

124 First of all, Obama's a prick. Having said that there needs to be some clarification on this story.

First of all, the President was not in the plane and odds are he never knew what happened. You notice the article did not call the plane "Air Force One," just "the plane used by the President." "Air force One" is the is the official call sign for ANY plane that has the President as a passenger; he could be flying in a Sopwith Camel and it will be called "Air Force One" by air traffic controllers. The call sign got its origins in 1953 when President Eisenhower was flying in Air Force 8610 when Eastern Airlines flight 8610 entered the same air-space, causing some panicky confusion.

It is obvious this was just a harmless photo-op planned weeks in advance to make some new posters to sell in the White House gift shop. Though they could have been a little bit more aware on how New Yorkers would re-act to seeing a 747 escorted by fighter planes flying low over the city. A few press releases to the media and a brief mention on the morning radio shows while everybody was on their way to work could have reduced the numbers of bricks that were shat.

Look at this graph. Then tell me how badly it worked

Also, stopping terrorism as the cause for the war was not the official
policy of the gov. at the time. It was WMD's...which didnt exist.
Justifications for the war:

Joint Resolution To authorize the use of United States Armed Forces against Iraq.

Whereas in 1990 in response to Iraqs war of aggression against and illegal occupation of Kuwait, the United States forged a coalition of nations to liberate Kuwait and its people in order
to defend the national security of the United States and enforce United Nations Security Council resolutions relating to Iraq;

Whereas after the liberation of Kuwait in 1991, Iraq entered into a United Nations sponsored cease-fire agreement pursuant to which Iraq unequivocally agreed, among other things, to eliminate
its nuclear, biological, and chemical weapons programs and the means to deliver and develop them, and to end its support for international terrorism;

Whereas the efforts of international weapons inspectors, United States intelligence agencies, and Iraqi defectors led to the discovery that Iraq had large stockpiles of chemical weapons and
a large scale biological weapons program, and that Iraq had an advanced nuclear weapons development program that was much closer to producing a nuclear weapon than intelligence reporting had previously indicated;

Whereas Iraq, in direct and flagrant violation of the cease-fire, attempted to thwart the efforts of weapons inspectors to identify and destroy Iraqs weapons of mass destruction stockpiles and
development capabilities, which finally resulted in the withdrawal of inspectors from Iraq on October 31, 1998;

Whereas in Public Law 105235 (August 14, 199, Congress concluded that Iraqs continuing weapons of mass destruction programs threatened vital United States interests and international
peace and security, declared Iraq to be in material and unacceptable breach of its international obligations and urged the President to take appropriate action, in accordance with the Constitution and relevant laws of the United States, to bring Iraq into
compliance with its international obligations;

Whereas Iraq both poses a continuing threat to the national security of the United States and international peace and security in the Persian Gulf region and remains in material and unacceptable
breach of its international obligations by, among other things, continuing to possess and develop a significant chemical and biological weapons capability, actively seeking a nuclear weapons
capability, and supporting and harboring terrorist organizations;

Whereas Iraq persists in violating resolution of the United Nations Security Council by continuing to engage in brutal repression of its civilian population thereby threatening international peace and security in the region, by refusing to release, repatriate, or account for non-Iraqi citizens wrongfully detained by Iraq, including an American serviceman, and by failing to return property wrongfully seized by Iraq from Kuwait;

Whereas the current Iraqi regime has demonstrated its capability and willingness to use weapons of mass destruction against other nations and its own people;

Whereas the current Iraqi regime has demonstrated its continuing hostility toward, and willingness to attack, the United States, including by attempting in 1993 to assassinate former President
Bush and by firing on many thousands of occasions on United States and Coalition Armed Forces engaged in enforcing the resolutions of the United Nations Security Council;

Whereas members of al Qaida, an organization bearing responsibility for attacks on the United States, its citizens, and interests, including the attacks that occurred on September 11, 2001, are known to be in Iraq;

Whereas Iraq continues to aid and harbor other international terrorist organizations, including organizations that threaten the lives and safety of United States citizens;

Whereas the attacks on the United States of September 11, 2001, underscored the gravity of the threat posed by the acquisition of weapons of mass destruction by international terrorist organizations;

Whereas Iraqs demonstrated capability and willingness to use weapons of mass destruction, the risk that the current Iraqi regime will either employ those weapons to launch a surprise attack against the United States or its Armed Forces or provide them to international terrorists who would do so, and the extreme magnitude of harm that would result to the United States and its citizens from such an attack, combine to justify action by the United States to defend itself;

Whereas United Nations Security Council Resolution 678 (1990) authorizes the use of all necessary
means to enforce United Nations Security Council Resolution 660 (1990) and subsequent relevant resolutions and to compel Iraq to cease certain activities that threaten international peace and security, including the development of weapons of mass destruction and refusal or obstruction of United Nations weapons inspections in violation of United Nations Security Council Resolution 687 (1991), repression of its civilian population in violation of United Nations Security Council Resolution 688 (1991), and threatening its neighbors or United Nations operations in Iraq in violation of United Nations Security Council Resolution 949 (1994);

Whereas in the Authorization for Use of Military Force Against Iraq Resolution (Public Law 1021), Congress has authorized the President to use United States Armed Forces pursuant to United Nations Security Council Resolution 678 (1990) in order to achieve implementation of Security Council Resolution 660, 661, 662, 664, 665, 666, 667, 669, 670, 674, and 677;

Whereas in December 1991, Congress expressed its sense that it supports the use of all necessary means to achieve the goals of United Nations Security Council Resolution 687 as being consistent with the Authorization of Use of Military Force Against Iraq Resolution (Public Law 1021), that Iraqs repression of its civilian population violates United Nations Security Council Resolution 688 and constitutes a continuing threat to the peace, security, and stability of the Persian Gulf region, and that Congress, supports the use of all necessary means to achieve the goals of United Nations Security Council Resolution 688;

Whereas the Iraq Liberation Act of 1998 (Public Law 10533 expressed the sense of Congress that it should be the policy of the United States to support efforts to remove from power the current Iraqi regime and promote the emergence of a democratic government to replace that regime;

Whereas on September 12, 2002, President Bush committed the United States to work with the United Nations Security Council to meet our common challenge posed by Iraq and to work for the necessary resolutions, while also making clear that the Security Council resolutions will be enforced, and the just demands of peace and security will be met, or action will be unavoidable;

Whereas the United States is determined to prosecute the war on terrorism and Iraqs ongoing support for international terrorist groups combined with its development of weapons of mass destruction in direct violation of its obligations under the 1991 cease-fire and other United Nations Security Council resolutions make clear that it is in the national security interests of the
United States and in furtherance of the war on terrorism that all relevant United Nations Security Council resolutions be enforced, including through the use of force if necessary;

Whereas Congress has taken steps to pursue vigorously the war on terrorism through the provision of authorities and funding requested by the President to take the necessary actions against international terrorists and terrorist organizations, including those nations, organizations, or persons who planned, authorized, committed, or aided the terrorist attacks that occurred on September 11, 2001, or harbored such persons or organizations;

Whereas the President and Congress are determined to continue to take all appropriate actions against international terrorists and terrorist organizations, including those nations, organizations,
or persons who planned, authorized, committed, or aided the terrorist attacks that occurred on September 11, 2001, or harbored such persons or organizations;

Whereas the President has authority under the Constitution to take action in order to deter and prevent acts of international terrorism against the United States, as Congress recognized in
the joint resolution on Authorization for Use of Military Force (Public Law 10740); and

Whereas it is in the national security interests of the United States to restore international peace and security to the Persian Gulf region: Now, therefore, be it

Actually Jim, you, like the theologeon Pelosi misunderstand the actual reference.
Fair enough, I'll concede to you there. Still, where is your definition of life coming from? If it's religion, then it has no place in the abortion discussion.

And, btw, homosexuality is a lifestyle choice.

Proving my point about your prejudice. Look back on this in 50 years and cry.

Slave owners = members of the Democratic Party.

Really, current members of the democratic party are slave owners? If not, then this comment means nothing. Also, I'm not a democrat, so I don't see how this was designed to contradict my point.

Ted *hic* Kennedy *hic* and Vietnam veteran buddy Senator John
Ketchup and most Democrats weren't very supportive. Except in hindsight.

I'm not Ted Kennedy or John Ketchup...so what was your point? Was it that these people are democrats? I'm not a democrat.
Terrorism and body counts.

http://www.swivel.com/graphs/show/9097944. Also, your graph didn't work. resend link.

All your quote of justification for Iraq:

For the love of God, you proved my point, all the initial reasons are about WMD's. Terrorism is thrown in there much later. Having it be a point among many in a document does not justify the war or Bush.

159 Clinton created debt in the beginning of his term as well. And came out the other side with a huge surplus.

Obama may not be able to do the same, even with a Newtonian Congress elected in his first midterm.. But where there's life, there's hope.

162 I used to work in downtown LA years ago, and may tims 747's would fly in from Asia, turn south and pass a couple miles from downtown at ~5000'-7000' on their approaches to LAX.
The main approach is from the east where the planes stack up 20 deep to land, and the 747's would join the queue.
Seeing a plane that low isn't suprising in downtown, or at least it wasn't years ago.

226 here is no denying that buying Swiss Replica Watches
has become a trend in modern society. However, it is not an easy task
to find a high quality one especially you a freshman in the related
field. You have to collect as much information as you can about the
retailer who you are going to deal with because its credit standing
directly influences the quality to the timepiece. Therefore, Replica Rolex
of guidelines are offered for you to make a right decision.

Firstly, you can never to too cautious on checking the details of a
replica watch. A reputable website usually comes with a good number of
pictures which display the watch details such as markings, engravings,
materials and dial face features. Everyone wants to buy an imitation
with high grade leather strap or stainless steel bracelet. Usually
speaking, the quality Rolex Replica
is made up of sapphire crystal glass and Swiss made movement so that
the durability and time accuracy are ensured.

Secondly, make sure that you are buying from a reliable source. It
should be evaluated before you make a choice on the style. As far as we
know, there are a large number of dealers who are doing the similar
business. At a temporary time, it is impossible to have a thorough
knowledge about all of them. Thus, you are recommended to search as much
information as you can to evaluate its reputation. For a good Rolex Daytona,
it always comes with available telephone number which can be used for
consultant or online services. What is more, the trustworthy website
guarantees periodical refund for quality issue Swiss Replica Omega.
According to my experience, the best way is to check the customer
satisfaction including the positive and negative feedbacks from the
previous buyers.

227 Another bridesmaids dress trend we're seeing for this season is a return to the traditional go big, or go home idea. In other words, welcome back the heavy hitting designers.cocktail dresses From Calvin to Betsey, clean to crazy, the world's biggest designers are making an impact on weddings around the world. What could be holier than donning one of the world's most celebrated artists in a fabulously grand church? Take, for instance, Bagdley Miscka's 'Strapless Sweatheart Bridesmaids Dresses.' Absolutely heavenly, this option features an empire waist, a-line skirt, all at a tea length. The unique cross-over bust stitching is the height of femininity, while the deeper (think espressos and burgundies) keeps things simple, andprom dresses 2012 all eyes on the bride. Who says you can't feel absolutely beautiful in a bridesmaid's dress? Plus, with a price tag of $250, it looks like luxury can be affordable!

The last of the latest moves in bridesmaids' dresses we'll be checking out is the funky neckline. One of the best ways to work with a bride who chooses an off-beat wedding dress is to support it with simple, classic shapes that showcase just a bit of a twist. In this case, we'll look to Betsy & Adam's Satin Dress for a fabulous example. This a-line shape shakes things up just a bit with a unique portrait collar and ruched detailing around the bodice. This fully lined, nylon, spandex, acetate blend holds a great, sturdy shape. Plusprom dresses, with traditional fall solids like brown, navy, and plum, this is a fabulous way to work with a one-of-a-kind wedding dress that may not follow the straight and narrow.
