More Good News...Things May Be Heating Up Again Between Georgia And Russia

After late last night's/early this morning's news from Pakistan, this should make everyone even more comfortable....Russia and Georgia might be about to go at it again.

Last week the Russians told NATO if they had any plans to train with Georgia to cancel them and then the Russians deployed the 22 ships of their Black Sea Fleet.

That was followed earlier this week by a redeployment of Russian ground forces.

Russia has stationed its forces just 25 miles (40 kilometers) from the Georgian capital, in violation of the EU-brokered cease-fire that ended last year's brief war. And in recent weeks, it has sent even more troops and armored vehicles to within striking distance of the city ahead of street protests against Georgia's president.

And now comes word of an overnight exchange of gun fire along the administrative border separating Georgia from its breakaway region of South Ossetia.

Yankee Sailor is following this and has gamed out what a Russian attack might look like from the Russian perspective and what the Georgian defense effort might look like.

Remember when the Russians moved last year, it wasn't the Georgian military that prevented total defeat but political pressure, including the dispatch of US and NATO assets to the area.

Something tells me Obama won't be acting as swiftly and forcefully as Bush did.

Remember that Obama's first reaction last summer was to blame both sides for the violence. Only after cribbing from McCain did he put the blame on the Russians for their aggression.

I don't think the Russians are as interested in hitting the 'Reset' button as they are the 'Let's Finish It' button.

Gird your loins indeed.

2 Don't worry!  Team Barry will parachute in.  The One will stand on the border shirtless, his golden pecs glistening in the sun.  He will extend his buff, ropy arms and bring healing to the nations.  It's all taken care of, so go back to the mall!

3 Is Obama a (bad) Moron yet? I mean, amongst the 8% that got him the election? I've already detached from a wonderful, but hopefully liberal woman over this insanity. How far will this go? Wars? A recession prolonged for political advantage? Gay "rights" fascism? Global warming demagoguery? BS torture witch trials? CNN qua pravda? THIS IS REALLY GETTING SCARY.

29 Fucking Putin and all those libs who toed the line about how Georgia was the aggressor, feeling their oats because of their new protection from NATO. I KNEW it was just a recon mission for an all-out assault.

So, we've got Russia walking on Georgia, Iran warming up its nukes for Israel, North Korea building up for God knows what, a resurgent Taliban descending on Islamabad, Mexican druglords living out a scene from Mad Max on our border, an economy in unchecked socialist freefall. All the while, Time magazine has Barry on the cover for the THIRTEENTH TIME in a year, praising him as the Healer Of All Things. This'd be funny if it weren't so damn scary.

32 You know, if Barry were smart, he could have used this to get what he wants anyway, ala 1962.  (Not that I think this would really work, but)...In exchange for not crushing Georgia, we could have offered to back down on European missile defense. But, he has already essentially said he has no interest in SDI in eastern Europe (or anywhere for that matter).  So we lost a potential ace in the hole (is hole allowed?) and got nothing in exchange.
But hey, at least we aren't antagonizing the Russians, that'll keep them calm, and inside their borders, right?  Right?

So, who plans to become a ghoul and who a super-mutant?

And I wouldn't have called Bush's response "swift and forceful." He basically sat back silently while Sarkozy engineered Chamberlain-esque publicity stunts that ceded half of Georgia over to Russian "peace keepers" to quell riots that Putin had stoked by busing in Russians to South Ossetia.

Still, a few boxes of food and medical supplies and some awkward pauses on the Weekly World Leader Conference Calls is still more robust and virile that what BO will do.

The US is facing the possibly collapse of the supply lines into Afghanistan if Pakistan goes south. The only alternate supply route is through Russia.

Turkey isn't going to go to bat for the US, or NATO, so the supply lines into Georgia are similarly restricted in the event of a military confrontation. The only thing the US can do is play brinksmanship and Putin knows this. So unless Obama can convince those rascally Iranians to play nice, we have no good options.

So what it comes down to is Obama's steely nerve and firm determination to get the job done!

69 Back in my late teens I was an assistant manager at a little pizza place. I was not extremely mature for my age; the management was very immature for their ages.
Barack Sinatra is now pres. My focus is not on the pres. The world is very immature for its age.
NO MATTER WHAT the pres does scenarios are pilling up to the point we an’t going to get that pizza in thirty minutes.
Scenarios pilling up are Iran-US, Taiwan-China, Pakistan-India, Pakistan-US, US-Iraq, Us-Afghanistan, Israel-most neighboring countries, those neighboring countries and everybody else, N Korea-S Korea and economic unrest in many countries. All these situations are unpredictable regardless of the nicely sounding crises management terms that will be tossed around. Dominos may start to fall similar to a kid trying to break a Guinness world record. Many in the west may believe that things can’t get that bad. Just think these governments that help us avoid wars also manage the economies. Feel better now?
If America becomes more overwhelmed our obligations of shared defenses will go by the wayside. Countries are fragile. What does that make people?
I think Pakistan for now is the hottest spot. Leave a comment, link or a micro film dot and let us know what you think about our wonderful dangerous planet. No planet management experience needed.

That book's been written. Many times in fact. First time was "The Anabasis". A version with modern military tech is "The Ten Thousand" by Harold Coyle.

Entertaining? It'll be a freakin' party! I predict Obama will send Jesse Jackson as his special envoy to get our boys home - with honor!

techie - so would I if more NATO contingents had spent their time in districts where there was fighting and got that out of the way.  Training is good, but training and then 'seeing the elephant'?  I would prefer to have the troops cutting their way out to have that under their belt.

I suspect the USMC, the USA, and the Anglosphere contingents will be taking point and covering the retreat.  And they will be blamed for all casualties those they are covering for take.

Comrade Arthur:  I believe that NATO would get out and that an Anabasis would work, but that means holding the rail lines, and keeping them and the rolling stock going.  And holding the roads and bridges.  A modern army needs that or the heavy equipment gets left behind.  And no matter what, abandoning heavy equipment in a retreat is an IO victory for the bad guys.

A park of blasted, self-demolished tanks and IFVs is still an IO victory we cannot afford to give to the Taliban, just to escape with our lives.

I hope India can hold the backstop.

Travis:  No offense to the Dutch.  They do fight, as others have.  I was writing generally.  The Dutch contingent isn't very large, and would find itself grafted on to a larger force.  And I am certain they - and everyone else - would fight gallently.

Ingrid Newkirk:  The Luftwaffe reference was based on the Dunkirk reference.  The Taliban do not have an airpower to harrass a retreat - and thank God for that.

Here's my theory:  Obama really doesn't care about foreign policy.  At all.

His job (as he sees it) is to remake American society into the Great Socialist Utopia of leftist dreams.

And if global unrest (or worse) leads to an even worse economic collapse, well, so much the better.  The worse things are, the easier it is to implement radical changes.

He cares about foreign policy only to the extent that he doesn't want it fooking up his grand vision of fundamentally changing America.

"landlines need to be kept open, a seaport needs to be held."

Of course I agree on the "needs," but let's just take another look at what's in that Anabasis. The Myriad fought their way out, overland, demanding the "right to a market" or taking it as they went, pulling their baggage train behind them. If an American Army were to find itself cut off as they were, 90 days march from the sea, and engineered its way out with only airdrop supply, why, that would be a feat of arms unequaled in the history of warfare.

Their names would live forever. Governments would fall at the sound of their approach. A grove would be planted in their honor.

Not that you'd wish that on anyone, but they'd be just the sons of bitches to do it. I suppose they already have their staff working out the details.

I have long held that if Hitler had the sense the good lord gave a piss ant, we'd all be speaking Yiddish now. Of all the minorities in the world he could have used as his universal enemy, why choose the one group continually accused of having all the secret supplies of money, brains, and talent? Also the best violinists? And German Jews were patriotic (except the Communist ones), to the last possible moment...what a maroon. With their Jews, they'd have been unstoppable.

Georgia did start it, and pretty much everyone including the Georgian people acknowledged this last September.  They indiscriminately bombed the capital of South Ossetia and made a bid to recapture it, even though there was a stable ceasefire dating since 1993.  Saakashvili was overconfident in US support and a bit of a hot head, but let's not pretend they're the victims.  They picked on someone too big and got stomped.  That's how the world works.

Incidentally, how does it hurt the US if Russia conquers Georgia?  What historical or other connection do we have with Georgia?  How much money and blood is Georgia's indepenence from Russia worth?  If no one in Russia's near-abroad should be affected by Russia, I suppose we too should have little say in our own near-abroad.

This is all stupidity. Georgia must learn to get along with Russia, and we should stop getting in Russia's face over its natural sphere of influence and instead focus on real enemies, like Radical Islam.

Sorry, just got into the office.  I'm not a real morning person.

I think we need to prioritize.  Pretending that Russia's nationalist concern for its near-abroad is the same as global expansionist communism which fomented wars in such wide-ranging locales as Nicaragua and Vietnam is silly.  Communism is over.  The world is back to spheres of influence and power politics.  The new "communism" if you will is Radical Islam.  While you can deal with normal nations on the basis of some understanding of their interests, out intererests, and any common interests, things like pirates and terrorists need to be stomped.  There's no good reason looking for dragons to slay in the Caucuses, and we should be particularly wary of teaming up with odd balls like Saakahsvili.
