Obama: Hey, Who's Up for Some Witch Hunts?

witchhunt.jpg

Time to throw the left a little red meat.

President Barack Obama Tuesday refused to close the door on prosecuting authors of Bush-era legal rationales for terror suspect interrogations, after offering immunity to CIA operatives involved.

Obama made a distinction between the agents who carried out harsh interrogations permitted by the White House after the September 11 attacks in 2001 and the legal officials which justified such methods.

"With respect to those who formulated those legal decisions, I would say that that is going to be more of a decision for the attorney general within the parameters of various laws."

Obama says he would take steps to ensure that such prosecutions be handled in a bipartisan manner, so these investigations wouldn't turn into a witch hunt.

Right.

15 If I was one of the frogmen who administered the fatal shots to the Somali pirates I would be very nervous that, at some point in the future, Obama will make it known that he did not explicitly authorize the pirate takedown and that those involved will be prosecuted under international law.

Wait until this pirates trial starts and the left starts hand-wringing about their deaths. After all, what is the root cause of piracy?

This is just more and more weakness from the Betrayer-in-Chief.

I long for a strong leader who'll tell the rest of the world to kiss our collective asses. And who'll start to make a real dead example of terrorists after we've gotten some good intel from them by any means available (and I'm talking about going all Jack Bauer on them). The terrorists should fear us, not the other way around. They should fear being caught and the many bad things that, by rights, should happen to them.

Terrorists and their sick beliefs wither before true strength.

40 I really don't think any prosecutions will happen, however much Bammer, Reid, and Pelosi want them to. If the Donks ever tried to bring up a member of the previous administration on charges, the GOP would freak right the fuck out and revolt. Even Snowe, Collins, and Specter. The chances of any such thing being "bipartisan" is ludicrous in the extreme, which is why it will never happen.

Now, I wouldn't put it past the Donks to try. They still seethe all these years later at the Clinton impeachment, and they lust for a similar opportunity against the GOP. But any such move by the Democrats would probably prompt a filibuster (if not a complete walk-out) by the GOP. The government would come to a screeching halt, and the Democrats know it. And in the teeth of the longest and deepest recession in 75 years, they're not going to play chicken.

There's also the problem that any wrongdoing on the part of GOP administration officials is probably applicable to Democrats as well, either in the Clinton term or the current one, so they'd leave themselves open to prosecution.

Forget this. Bammer is just spouting off to placate the leftards. Nothing's going to come of it.

76 Check out Rosa Brooks, the Obama administration’s new adviser to Michelle Flournoy, the Undersecretary of Defense for Policy, “a position described as one of the most influential in the Pentagon”. Until recently she was a columnist for the LA Times, where she's written, (among other outrageous things):

She wrote that Bush and Vice President Dick Cheney “should be treated like psychotics who need treatment. … Impeachment’s not the solution to psychosis, no matter how flagrant.”

In another oped she entitled: “Our torturer-in-chief” in she inferred attacks against the U.S. were a result of torture policies.

“Today, the chickens are coming home to roost,” she fumed, but “the word ‘accountability’ isn’t in the White House dictionary.”

That person now has a position of influence at the Pentagon.

Goss was subsequently made head of the CIA and was serving in that post when the tapes were destroyed in 2005.

84 After a brief perusal of the memos, what is clear is that they were not used to justify torture, but rather, to find ways of interrogating recalcitrant detainees without resorting to torture. There was clearly a great deal of effort put into making sure that there was no torture.
The problem is of course, torture is pretty much in the eye of the beholder. When the definition is composed of subjective terms, you are going to get some subjective answers as to what does and does not constitute torture.

As to prosecutions, it's highly unlikely there will be any. And Barry knows that. Because it would have to take place in open court. And I just don't think San Fran Nan wants to sit in the docket and give her reasons for not objecting when the program was explained in great detail to her.

On the other hand, investigations? Oh, there will be. And in this case, the investigation IS the punishment. They'll use them both as a political bludgeon, and to make the individuals involved miserable. Pour encourages les autres.

86 "With respect to those who formulated those legal decisions, I would say that that is going to be more of a decision for the attorney general within the parameters of various laws."

Who the hell in their right mind would ever ever ever again go work at DOJ or in any legal department for any politician/White House/etc.?  Seriously.  It's bad enough that you'll be demonized by your political opponents.  Now there's indication of actual criminal charges for providing legal opinions.  Not to mention the risks you're running when you're going to be getting government pay for it.  If I was in that position and read this?  Resignation on the desk by the end of the day.  No way would I put myself at that risk.  No possible way.

So this means we get to criminally prosecute everyone who worked in the Obama Administration when the next Republican President is elected, right?

Actions like this always mean that the controlling party thinks it will never lose power.

I've seen no evidence thus far since the ascendancy of the Luo that would indicate they are planning on ceding power. Ever. We may have already seen the last "peaceful transfer of power."

Writing a legal opinion can land your ass in jail now? Well, that's certainly an interesting theory.

Can some of the judges who issues assinine legal opinions be prosecuted as well?  Fair is fair.

But if you're a Dem, you have nothing to fear. Someone on an earlier thread claimed that the DOJ is highly politicized and highly liberal. You're never going to be prosecuted for delivering a legal opinion that is in accordance with lefty thinking. But if you're conservative, you're right, you'd better run for the tall grass.

GarandFan has it right @26.  This is another trial balloon.

The first one was the DHS report.  Whether that was intended as a trial balloon or not, the 52 responded with mostly silence, thereby indicating that they don't much mind the innuendo linking opposition to terrorism.

Expect TOTUS to keep pressing along this axis.

So long as the 52 is mostly cool with TOTUS's grab at tyranny, they are complicit and just as guilty and deserving of punishment.
