Hmmm... Harman Leak a Shot Across Israel's Bow?

Could very well be. The whole controversy is "bad for the Jews," as they say, as it reinforces paranoid suspicions of AIPAC controlling the US government.

Time to question the timing?

Leaks of highly classified NSA wiretaps don't just happen. Someone has to have a purpose, and have confidence that they will not become the subject of prosecution for leaking the material. While the leak may have some relationship to the upcoming trial, I think it is more likely that the leak is an attempt to set supporters of Israel back on their heals in light of a growing U.S.-Israel dispute over Israel's alleged plans to attack Iran's nuclear facilities. Israel denies have imminent plans to attack, although one would not expect such acknowledgment anyway.

Israel's plans to attack Iran have been receiving increased press attention, drawing a public voice of disapproval from U.S. Secretary of Defense Robert Gates.

3 Well I certainly hope Israel has the gonads (and I think it does) to brush off Gate's "public voice of disapproval."

America is apparently now operating under John Kerry's "global test" bullshit foreign policy. No need for Israel to do so. It can't afford to.

Well, it's something to think about. I've been wondering why she'd give up a lifetime sinecure in the Senate with a chance to accumulate real power and trade it in for 2-4 years as SecState, knowing full well Obama intends to keep all control in the White House via a bunch of policy czars...

Even if it's true, this doesn't bother me at all on the Israeli side. All governments do that kind of thing. I can guarantee you, we would (and probably have) tried to bribe or blackmail high ranking officials in other countries to cover the tails of our agents. It's SOP. The only person at fault in this story is Jane Harman, and I still think she would have made a better head of the Intelligence Committee. This proves she's about the only Democrat willing to support Israel.

Though corruption really can't be tolerated.

-We fire "a shot across Israel's bow", warning our allies not to protect themselves against Iran, who has vowed to wipe out their country.

-Our President courts dictators who detest us and would gladly wipe us off the face of the earth if they could do so; he listens quietly to them rant and rave against the US, and agree with them that they are for the most part correct.

-At the same time, he handles diplomacy with Great Britain in a ham handed manner, at best.

-A report is released from our own Department of Homeland Security with no hard facts, but which infers that the real threat isn't the foreign crazies who would happily annihilate us, have attacked us several times already, killing thousands of Americans and vowing they will do so again. Rather, the real threat is presented by: ta daaah...conservatives and our own VETERANS who have put their lives on the line to protect us from the mad dogs out there.

-And on the homefront, trillions of dollars in debts as far as the eye can see. National "mainstream" news magazines proudly proclaim "We're all Socialists now."

Didn't that great author and proud American Michael Moore write a book a while back called something like, "Dude, Where's My Country?" I'm starting to think he has probably found whatever it is he thought had been misplaced.

42 My pessimistic take on things to come:

I know everybody's hoping Israel will handle Iran, but I wouldn't count on it.  Israel is politically paralyzed, and the threat of nuclear annihilation just seems too "out there" for most people in Israel to actually go to war over in the here and now.  It's "unthinkable".  Israel will probably do nothing, and Iran will get nukes.  It's gonna happen, folks.

Once they have nukes, Iran won't do a sneak attack, though.  They'll escalate with words and propaganda and threats, in order to provide some pretext before they nuke Israel.  By that point, Israel will see it coming, but it may be too late to do very much about it.

Posted by: sandy burger at April 20, 2009 03:13 PM (twiRb)

43 Travis, no ballistic missiles with conventional penetrating warheads.  There is a detailed analysis of the issue available on the web from one of the DC think tanks (CSIS, IIRC).  The other option is what UAV was intercepting Hamas arms shipments in Sudan (another link I don't have handy on this machine.)

Posted by: Jean at April 20, 2009 03:14 PM (L64A6)

44 Nukes? You think Israel would do that? It a hell of a step to take.

They don't have to be nukes, if conventional warheads can do the job. But I don't think the US (under Bush) has sold Israel the bunker-buster weapons they have requested.

But let's face it, Israel is alone now. Their only formerly-reliable ally in the world is now headed by a crypto-Muslim or a Muslim sympathizer who is denying them the weapons they need while funding their mortal enemies. The US has shown it will not take out the Iranian nuke program. Iran has shown that their highest goal is to vaporize the Jews. It's coming down to an existential showdown.

If Israel was my country, and it was my choice? Hell yeah, I'd push the button. And yes, it's going to result in a big, big mess, if not WWIII. But faced with annihilation, what choice is there?

My understanding is that the Iranian facilities are buried fairly deeply. The US has talked about mini-nuke penetrators for exactly this reason. The other problem would be having the warheads ready and enough missiles to do the job. I am not sure how many it would take but it would have to be prepared well in advance.

Posted by: D-ling at April 20, 2009 03:25 PM (Lhz3l)

51 43, 44, That's a level of sophistication for missiles the Israeli's don't have. We might be able to do that, but we don't really know. We've never tried it. The US has spend a gazillion dollars on improving the accuracy of its ballistic missiles so they could strike Russian missiles in their silos. And even then, a "hit" was within 500 yards. That's not gonna cut it for a conventional warhead.

Israel has never had to work on accuracy that much, since their historical targets have always been counter-value. You hit Tel-Aviv, we hit Tehran. You just have to be in the ballpark with that type of force.

54 The other problem would be having the warheads ready and enough missiles to do the job. I am not sure how many it would take but it would have to be prepared well in advance.

Israel has two subs with ballistic and/or cruise missiles. I don't really know their capabilities. I have read in the past that Israel is thought to have 300 megatons of nuclear weapons "online". That is several times the amount needed to nuke Iran back to the stone age.

Unfortunately, Iran has distributed and buried its nuclear facilities. Israel probably has the best intelligence on where they are and how to take them out. Some are supposedly buried underneath residential areas. The number of nukes needed to take them out may be similar to the number of nukes needed to totally destroy Iran as a functioning society. The question then becomes, do you solve the problem temporarily, with a limited strike which may still kill tens of thousands of Iranians, or do you solve the problem permanently?

This is getting into "Dr. Strangelove" territory.

page 72

There are many answers to deeply buried, and at the current stage of development not all of the target can be buried.  It's when the systems are near complete that burying them becomes an option.  The entire infrastructure of research and support cannot be buried.

Nor, can the Iranian oil and natural gas export facilities.  No cash and the Russians go home.  Bomb and missile development stop (or slow).

I would suspect Israel can build more missiles then a broke Iran operating in the dark can.  The rest of that report covers the airstrike options.  I don't recall if it address the long range strike UAV capability Israel recent used in Sudan.

Israel is not without options and doesn't need our help.

65 Doug, I wanted to take Kharj Island back when they had our embassy.  It still the same problem for Tehran.

Iran is very vulnerable to external pressure on her economy and responds to economic threat with asymmetrical attacks.  She exports oil and natural gas, but needs to import gasoline.  The oil and gas exports go thru very narrow channels and the resources themselves sit under ethnic minorities who have little love for the Persians.

If you have already gone and circled the wagons, and have no fear of Iranian asymmetrical attacks or constraints on Persian Gulf oil flow (conditions that describe Israel), then downsides to an attack on Iran are indirect and "political."

In my opinion, Israel holds the cards and the US will be picking up the pieces if Iran isn't stopped before Bibi gets fed up.  I can't see him passing this threat onto another liberal adminstration in Israel or his chidren.

69 We need to start prosecuting some of these leaks, regardless of the source.

Posted by: Vic at April 20, 2009 05:14 PM (f6os6)

70 The leak obviously came out of Holders office. Look at the reporting, Gonzalez is specifically rebuked for stopping the probe to gain political support for the NSA wiretaps.

Cheney's response is to ask for the background CIA memos to be declassified, saying what we learned from interrogation (and the plots stopped).

Obama, being a Muslim (I will recall that Malor scoffed at that, repeatedly) wants the US to be attacked by jihadists (hence the CIA memos thing and the "horror" that we waterboarded Khalid Sheik Mohammed, the 9/11 Mastermind, 138 times) ... and he wants Israel nuked.

This has broad support among Obama's backers, including many Jews. Who are SWPL yuppies first and Jews a distant second. Just as Gays form "Queers for Palestine" knowing full well that the Hamas, Hezbollah, and PA organizations routinely lynch gays while Israel protects them.

Just as Women routinely back Islamists (think: Megan McCain) because they are "SWPL popular" and anti-American cool.

Most American Jews are SWPL yuppies and would frankly welcome Iran nuking Israel off the face of the Earth, because they are SWPL yuppies and that is what SWPL want.

Holder and Obama's game (the two are cronies) is to make Israel get nuked, and have the US be attacked. So a large-scale surrender on all fronts, particularly speech (nothing that "offends" Muslims and everything offends them), religion, gun ownership, and particularly Straight White Men can be outlawed or restricted or punished respectively.

Women, Gays, Blacks, Hispanics and SWPL yuppies would all endorse such a response. Their enemy is not Jihad but the Straight White Guys who are the hated competitors.

Obama of course is a Muslim who hates America and Whites. That is abundantly clear in the Latin American summit, his groveling and kissing the ring of the Saudi King, his hugs and grins for the Evil Clown, his nodding at Ortega's rant, etc. Israel has to be destroyed in order to further his Muslim agenda, which btw most of his supporters know quite well and agree with.

Israel knew a time would come when SWPL yuppies and Women (think again Megan McCain) would take control of America electorally, due to demographic shifts, seeing that process work itself out inside Israel itself. Rockets rained down on half the country and nearly half STILL voted for Lvni's appeasement/surrender policy that was SWPL yuppie/female-oriented.

THAT'S WHAT NUKES ARE FOR. Last ditch insurance. Netanyahu got the brush off in wanting to meet with Obama (conveniently out of town). He's been told no overflight permission for any attacks on Iran, and various Obama advisors are leaking things to the press about how the US would invade Israel if it attacked Iran. The sale of the F-35s to Israel has been cancelled.

I expect Netanyahu to roll the dice, nuke first, take the consequence later. Obama would LOVE to invade and destroy Israel, on behalf of Muslim nations, and his SWPL Yuppie backers, Women, Gays, Blacks, and Hispanics (his electoral base) would heartily endorse that the way they endorsed Clinton's Air War on Serbia. THAT is what the leaks are about, out of Holder's office, and likely Rice and Power's staff. [Power fantasized about invading and abolishing Israel.]

However, Obama's weak. Reports are coming in that he interfered with the Somali Pirate hostage affair, forbidding specifically any lethal force, presence of SEALs, and the Bainbridge commander finally just ignored him, called for the SEALs himself and gave them the go-ahead to take the shot when they could. The military loathes Obama, and knows him to be both weak and a Muslim who hates America, it's tradition, and military.

Netanyahu knows if he does nothing, Iran nukes anyway. Nuke now, save Israel and gamble on a US military mutiny against the Muslim President.

72 One more thing to toss into the mix is increased cooperation between India and Israel, like the Israeli-built spy satellite that the Indians just put into orbit today.

This could signal a possible realignment from the US-as-patron relationship with Israel, to an India-as-equal relationship. It would make sense from the Israeli standpoint to pursue the India relationship as the Obama-lead US begins to cut ties. I'm wondering how much benefit India would receive, other than the obvious high-tech partnerships.

75 IllTemperedCur,

India should scare the Gulf states more then Israel.  Imagine if the Indian laborers started demanding basic human rights and a significant Indian naval force showed up to support their legitimate call for the redress of grievances.

79 PM Netanyahu of Israel was supposed to attend the AIPAC Conference this Spring, but was told by Mr. Obama's advisors that Mr. Obama would not meet with him. So PM Netanyahu will just send a video appearance at the conference.
For our Jewish acers, why is Obama so festive and talkative with left wing dictators who are our enemies and who also want to destroy Israel but won't give face time to our ally's Prime Minister?
