Predictable: CNN Demands YouTube Yank Embarrassing Susan Roesgen Video Based on Specious Copyright Claim

CNN permits a lot of YouTube videos of its news (and "news"). Apparently they consider them free advertising.

But here, they've claimed copyright.

The question of whether an excerpt is fair use does not, and cannot, turn on whether the company claiming copyright feels the excerpt is helpful or harmful to its corporate cause.

16 This is why digital archiving is both a boon and a danger. A boon because a video or sound clip can be parallelized and distributed widely enough to route around censorship; a danger because if it is suppressed, then the history it documents could be wholly lost, or the document could be changed. We've already seen foreign governments routinely put out photoshopped propaganda as "news", but luckily we still have other resources for finding out what is true and what is false.

Being old fashioned, I believe that history is fixed and describes what actually happened, not what we wish happened. It remains to be seen if this quaint view survives the digital revolution.

The protesters need to bring their own cameras and shoot whatever the news crews shoot. That way you have your own legal copy and you can show what the "news" edits out.

Something like that actually happened back in the 80s with 60 Minutes. They did a feature about a nuclear power plant under construction in Illinois and featured all kind of stuff about waste and abuse by the plant officials. They did a hit interview of the plant manager that made him look like a prevaricating idiot.

The plant also filmed right along beside them and they made their video. They showed what actually went down in a side by side comparison of the “real” interview vs the 60 minutes edited interview. I saw this video and I wish I had a copy of it because it was in an old open real format and you will never be able to find it again.

The idea was to get local PBS stations to air the video all over the country but CBS threatened a lawsuit to the local staions and the public never got to see it.

After I saw that video I never watched 60 minutes again and I never trusted CBS news again.

This is the same kind of shit that was done to Sarah Palin to make her look bad.

26 Right, we saw this with Palin clips, where they maybe keep pushing a question till she gives a response they think they can twist, or that sounds least intelligent.

If some TEA partiers had gotten angry or more aggressive in response, they could have cut out all the Roesgen antagonistic crap, and color the news their way.  As it is, it just reveals how biased CNN is.

Right, we saw this with Palin clips, where they maybe keep pushing a question till she gives a response they think they can twist, or that sounds least intelligent

In ABC interview they actually cut and pasted responses from one question to another to make her look bad. They could have also done that at CBS but we were never able to get access to unedited transcripts.

What I didn’t understand then is why there was a huge outcry from the McCain camp. After the election was over and I saw what came out of the McCain camp I then understood.

Around five pm KABC-TV pulled the Pinkers out of the crowd, marched them across the street from the tea party, and filmed their banner in tight close-up.

CNN's demand to pull it proves that the video puts their reporter in a BAD LIGHT.  I've heard lots of lefties say that it actually makes Roesgen look good - but CNN pulling the video PROVES they aren't proud of her performance.

Oh - and she's on leave now?

I always think about Connie Chung interviewing Gary Condit about the Levy affair. Condit was smart enough to absolutely insist that the interview air unedited. And boy oh boy did Chung come off like an idiot. How many times can you ask the same question, Connie? Your editors aren't going to save you this time. It just showed in spades how these fucks manipulate what we see and hear.

#20 Vic - that is why when Palin or any conservative politician or spokesperson that grants an interview  should insist on taping the interview as well with their own people.

A commenter, I think here, also suggested Palin (and future GOP candidates for any office) wear a digital timer on her/their lapel so viewers could follow how chopped up the time was from when a question was asked and when it was answered, or show how out of order the answers were being cut and pasted, and how much time was missing before the next question was asked.

Posted by: andycanuck at April 19, 2009 04:10 PM (vulJH)

49 No, what they should do is to get agreement in writing that the answers will be unedited. McCain's people should have known that.

No it just mean's we got caught stacking the deck. That scrunt Roesgen is a rank amateur.

We'll know better next time and send Campbell or Christiane in. They know how to keep the cool under pressure from all of you right-wing terrorist's without batting an eye.

Plus Campbell will suck you off to get good press, which is an extra added benefit.

Christiane will at least show you her tit's and maybe, just maybe give you a handjob if your real nice, but if you've ever seen sun-dried raisin's,......well then, you've seen her tit's.

Posted by: CNN at April 19, 2009 05:43 PM (+FzLa)

54 We here at Rock Bottom would be very interested in hiring Susan Roesgen. If anyone hears about her return from vacation, we'd be willing to pay you for the tip. We offer free tickets to the 2009 Candy Convention, but are willing to negotiate.

And CNN? Don't look now but our ratings are better than yours. We have what you (well, maybe not you, literally, but normal analysts) would call "credibility" and people know it. Say "hello" to fourth place. News at eleven.

Posted by: Godfrey Jones at April 19, 2009 05:48 PM (swuwV)

55 Lawfare will destroy us--from our basic freedoms, to losing the war with our internal enemies.  We need "loser pays" as soon as possible, but oddly, it's a feature of European culture the lefties are not too excited about.

(And sockpuppetting Spurwing Plover should be a bannable offense.  Spurwing is an AoSHQ treasure.)

56 Isn't it about time videographers and archivers start posting to other video venues? There are others besides YouTube, right?

We know Google bought YouTube and Google is a fundamentally liberal organization. It would follow that YouTube would project the sentiment of its owners and skew (once a critical mass is reached) that which is controversial and critical of the Left such that it doesn't remain so damaging.

Maybe Rupert Murdoch could find some interest in a right-leaning social-video-networking portal that competes with YouTube in the big pool of the internet.

WRT "managerial brains at CNN" - Heh. Good one.

If the object was having integrity, sure. But it isn't. The truth conflicts with their goal. She was either put on assignment to manufacture a hit piece or did it of her own accord with management blessing.

Just stating the obvious. I know you know this.

In this case, we can blame CNN for both the crime and the cover-up. Well played, CNN. That took serious commitment. Plus the follow-up with other on-air talent perpetuating the vulgarity smear? Nice touch.

CNN might as well start shilling for the "Fairness Doctrine" and bailout subsidies from the taxpayer 24/7 now because it'll be out of business in short order with the current management and credibility gap.

One of the people Susan yapped at (the guy holding his son) was interviewed at length a couple of days later.  Somewhere the point was made that a CNN losing millions in advertising & viewership is desperate and resorting to theatrics.

Watching their hysterical and idiotic interviewer in Chicago on Wednesday, it seems a valid thesis.
