They've got a new system out called IPv6 but it's going to cost a lot of investment to get everyone on it.

@33: Most people have dynamic ip addressing, so their address and therefore hash code changes with it (if my testing was right).   If you have DSL or Cable and turn your computer off for 10 minutes or so, you'll probably get a new IP address.  I don't know if the hash code will change with that or it will take it from the cookie (there is a cookie, definitely).

regardless, the basic truth is that the people can and have basically abolished the points that mattered most.  We don't really have free speech... just the freedom to speak truth to unpopular 'power'.  We don't have the right to guns... just some approximation of that.  We don't have equality or retrained government or rights reserved to the states.  The executive and judiciary are vastly and ridiculously different than laid out in the constitution.

These rights were taken, and no one stopped it, and that's the way the world works.  If you want to fix it, I've got your back, but I don't know that the people even want that fixed.  I have no idea what to do about that problem.

Mine changed last year some time. My computer got infected, I tried to fix it, I thought I did, and I wound up with a different hash. Then it started acting up again, so I called the Norton people, some guy in India manually removed whatever was bunging up my machine, and I've been 5KNeJ ever since.

So even though those hash changes were occuring on my end, I wasn't doing them on purpose.

130 My guess would be that if you are using a dial-up connection, then you would be getting new IP addresses much more frequently than you would if you were on a [more or less] constant broadband connection.

Our residential broadband almost NEVER gives us new IP addresses.

If you have a recent version of windows which is grabbing your DHCP addresses for you, and if you are an Administrator, then, from a command prompt [Start | Run | CMD.EXE], you can force the box to relinquish its IP address and attempt to grab a new one:

IPCONFIG.EXE /release
IPCONFIG.EXE /renew

But I almost invariably get back the same IP address that I started with [in fact, we seem to go weeks or even months at a time with the same IP address, no matter what we do].

PS: Many low-end Linksys/DLink/Netgear boxes won't even afford you that much functionality, although sometimes they'll have a web-based administration interface which will allow you to attempt to release and renew IP addresses.

PPS: I am also not real crazy about the fact that this "long text" filter forces me to go to TinyURL to create a shortened URL when I want to post a link - it means that the folks at TinyURL are [at least potentially] able to record my IP address, and then associate that IP address with the TinyURL hash which they granted me, and that in turn means that the bad guys are [at least potentially] only one or two search warrants away [or even less, depending on the politics of the folks who maintain TinyURL & the folks at my ISP] from sending their jack-booted thugs right to my front door.
