ASU Denies Obama an Honorary Degree, Stating His "Body of Work" Is Yet To Come; Liberals Barnicle, Mitchell Go Crazy

3 No honorary degrees should be given to anyone.  It's just dumb.  What, are you going to go around saying "I'm an honorary Doctor".  the only degrees that matter are the ones you earn.   Notre Dame is the most wrong in all of this.

The MSNBC's description in the video box says;

"ASU witholds honorary degree from Obama"

Maybe it's just me, but doesn't that wording imply that Obama somehow "earned" the degree, and now ASU is just being a jackass and not giving Obama what he earned?

The arrogance has reached an all-time high.  I'm not talking about Obama's arrogance, I'm speaking only of the media and their belief that this President is the greatest evah, and needs to be treated as such.

The scary thing...if this is only the first few months of his term, what's it gonna be like 3-4 years from now?....wait, I know...

13 The real slap in the face is that ASU actually went on the record to state that he had been considered for an honorary degree but was declined. Usually the process of nominating, vetting, and approving candidates for HDrs is a secretive one, to avoid embarrassment for all parties (the Deans and others at the universities who are vying for a limited number of HDr slots each year and the candidates themselves). It's really unusual for a university to have a spokesperson come out and say "yeah, we considered him but decided he wasn't good enough."

Good for ASU in recognizing what so many of us already knew -- Lightworker has achieved very little despite all of the advantages he's enjoyed.

19 18 You know, maybe Notre Dame could have pulled this. Deny him the honorary degree and he might turn down the invite.

Absolutely. There is not a one-to-one correlation between giving a commencement address and receiving an HDr. In the past, Notre Dame had bishops and other clergy give the address -- and on multiple occasions -- so obviously the person giving the commencement address doesn't have to receive the HDr.

ND's problem is that Rev. Jenkins forgot his vows. He's shown no humility or obedience to the church hierarchy.

28 Arizona State University, BRAVO, Sun Devils!

Chicken shit Obama has yet to produce his university transcripts, senior or graduate theses, or anything substantial. His books were written by Ayers. If anyone "deserved" credit for Obama's successes, it would be Ayers to get an honorary degree--but THAT would need to come from Columbia or some Ivy League institution that promotes inbred lame brains who bomb American citizens and destroy the Constitution.

Send this group of media assholes to hell. And the Sun Devils have the pitchforks to deprive the empowerment of MSNBC's prevailing insanity.

As per the MLK Holiday, IT WAS CELEBRATED AS A MEMORIAL DAY IN ARIZONA though not given the designation as a day-off from work and school. The rationale: George Washington and every other great American NO LONGER enjoy their own individuated federal holiday. Since conforming to the day-off status that required a former holiday being relinquished and no longer observed, do recognize how the ACLU and NAACP have corrupted the MLK message, revising King's color blind "Dream" (MLK plagiarized) into the perpetualization of black victimization to promote "black supremacy" and reverse discrimination.

Mecham was impeached because he was a crook with savings and loans just like Obama using ACORN to ruin Fanny Mae & Freddy Mac.

32 To hell with Harvard I'm sending my kids to ASU!

Posted by: Mrs. Compton at April 10, 2009 01:58 PM (DzFTv)

33 Interesting Joe Scarborough mentions what would happen if Ronald Reagan spoke at Princeton and this happened to him.

It used to be the custom for the President to speak at Harvard's commencement at 50 year intervals of its anniversary.  This obviously presented a dilemma in 1986 when the applicable person to show up would have been Ronald Reagan.  There were protests from faculty and alumni over reports he would get an honorary degree.

So Harvard decided 3/4ths of the way through his presidency that he would be allowed to speak, but wouldn't get the honorary degree that went along with it.

Naturally, Reagan decided "screw them" and didn't show up.

If I were Obama I'd probably take this as a snub, and I might even not blame him for not showing up, but this isn't unprecedented and Obama in 2009 is yet to be the man Ronald Reagan was in '86.

39 Can anyone who has experience with this explain what is the protocol for honorary degrees?  Is it typical to get one if you are a commencement speaker?

Usually the university takes nominations for the degree recipients and has a process to vet the list and determine who receives the degrees.  Because the conferral of a degree does reflect on the university, the faculty usually play a pretty large role in determining who will and who will not get a degree.  At some universities, the nominations are sent to the board of trustees or regents for approval.

Which leads to the question: why does Andrea Mitchell hate academic freedom?

42 Can anyone who has experience with this explain what is the protocol for honorary degrees?

At the institutions where I've been there is a nomination process that goes through the university president's office, although ultimately the decision to award the degree falls on the board of trustees (at many places the board of trustees actually approves each degree awarded, even undergraduate degrees). There is a lot of politics involved as schools usually have a limited number of honorary degrees that they'll award each year. Deans are usually involved heavily in determining who is nominated from their schools and making sure that the folks who are nominated would be acceptable to their faculty. Others weigh in as well, including members of the president's cabinet, the board of trustees, and key alumni. The Vice President for Advancement (who oversees alumni relations at most places) also weighs in... truth be told, people do get nominated for honorary degrees based on factors beyond just their "achievements" in their professions, service to the university is also a factor.

At some point there is approval by the faculty (I think this can either be by general vote, through the faculty Senate, or by the Deans) and a vote by the Board of Trustees.

I was at a university where the engineering dean wanted his alumnus to receive an honorary doctorate in management (that was what his alumnus wanted and that alumnus was an "important" one as well as a major donor prospect). The president's office relayed the request to the management dean who discussed it with his senior faculty leaders and concluded that the management faculty would not go for it. The engineering alumnus simply hadn't achieved enough of note in business to warrant the HDr. After some very careful politicking, the dean sent a very carefully worded note to the president in which he provided his personal support for the alumnus to receive an HDr -- in some other field.

Is it typical to get one if you are a commencement speaker?

I think there's a lot of variation on that. Some places make a point of not inviting external people to speak at commencement to avoid upstaging the graduating students and I believe other places may actually hire speakers.

44 40 As a recent ASU graduate, I have never been MORE proud of my university

If you can, try to send a donation to the university accompanied by a note saying how glad you are with their decision. Send it directly to the Advancement Office (you can direct the gift to your old department, but make sure the development people handle the gift directly). The VP for Advancement will undoubtedly be collecting feedback about this decision and sharing it with the president and trustees.

If you are the right age (45+) and have the patience, you might also want to contact the Planned Giving office. Tell them that you were motivated by this decision to include ASU in your will. They may call you once (to try to find out the amount), but usually planned giving people are very circumspect and won't pester you incessantly... but they will track your intention and report it to the VP.

49 Notre Dame's loophole on this is that it's customary to give HDrs to all its keynote speakers.

Notwithstanding, this is fucking humiliating for every Catholic and member of the Notre Dame family, to be so schooled by a public uni.  Believe me, the pressure is mounting up there by the day as more and more bishops come out against this shit.  The One might not be disinvited, but Rev. Jenkins might well find himself out of a job soon.  He's losing backing within the order.

50 49 Notre Dame's loophole on this is that it's customary to give HDrs to all its keynote speakers.

That may be so in recent times, but historically that was not necessarily the case.

In any event, Father Jenkins has an obligation to respect the U.S. bishops' instruction to Catholic organizations to not honor and give a platform for people who actively work in opposition to Church teaching.

The "loophole" he can use with President Obama when he calls to withdraw the invitation is that he (Jenkins) failed to follow proper protocol (a concept with which the Obama administration seems to be all too familiar) and get his bosses' go ahead to extend the invitation.

Jenkins should be apologetic to Obama. He's handled this whole thing very poorly. But the embarrassment of admitting his (Jenkins') mistake should not preclude him from doing the right thing.

Michael M. Crow, president of Arizona State University, tells POLITICO that the school is reconsidering its widely mocked plans not to give President Barack Obama an honorary degree when he speaks at commencement on May 13 and will “honor him in every way possible.”

A formal decision has not been made, but it was clear from Crow's comments that the university is headed in that direction. ASU risked becoming a national punch line if it did not quickly retreat from its policy against conferring honorary degrees on a sitting politician.

Of course it did. No one dare not worship the One. All non believers will be dealt with by our fair press.

65 UGAdawg at 60 - Not plagiarism IIRC (meaning I'm too lazy to look it up right now). Barnicle wrote soft human-interest stories for a Boston paper. Wrote a story or series of stories about a nurse who worked with kids with cancer. Caused some interest and people tried to contact her to support her. Barnicle became defensive about letting any one know how to get in touch with her and it came out that he had made the whole thing up. Turns out many of his other stories were the same, either made up from whole cloth or at least exagerated grossly. Now PMSNBC and Mathew's specifically are the only ones who will touch him with a ten foot pole journalistically.

78 With Obama, one step forward places you ten leaps backward.

ASU invited Obama to speak at commencement and Obama agreed to do so without any honorary degree involvement. Being what happened, the ASU student newspaper documented the story in their own fashion. The story as retold disturbs the chips on American shoulders. Drive by media thugs terrorize Arizona. The ASU President attempts to keep the peace without substantiating anything beyond a record that is being misrepresented according to Mike Allen, Politico, whose own agenda is printed loud and clear in "the story".

At least from 1950s-1980s, the Board of Regents were indeed the governing bodies of the universities in Arizona; UofA, ASU, NAU. Whereas, the university president played the public relations role, and most certainly never had the legislative/judicial/executive power over the Board of Regents under which the president functioned.

Mike Allen twisted ASU Pres. Crow's arm and writes his Politico piece "announcing" presumptively what Mike Allen would determine as ASU policy since in his wisdom Mike Allen rules the Board of Regents.

Obama agreed to address the ASU commencement without their invitation containing any expectation any honorary degree.  Whenever university officials were asked, they responded with professional simplicity stating circumstances as understood from their institution. But, being themselves philosophically above any and all universities' Board of Regents, the presumptive MSNBC and Mike Allen/Politico know best what "must surely happen" to make Obama happy so that the world will live as one.

Obama made an agreement under given circumstances.  That Obama get more from the deal than stipulated provides America with ANOTHER EXAMPLE OF OBAMA DISREGARDING CONTRACTS and exercising opportunistic aggression at the expense of citizens and institutions. This is more socialism, spreading the wealth of an academic degree "with all rights and priviledges therein" by political decree.

For Obama to be anything other than "honored to speak to the graduates of ASU without further ado" proves his predation.  Bend over and petrify for Obama's pleasure. If you fail to receive Obama in the fashion he determines at any time after an agreement is reached, punitive measures follow. Hit and Run. Mike Allen and the MSNBC will see to your initial ridicule. Obama's bandwagon celebrates what his bus ran over.

This former ASU Board of Regents Scholar defies Obama and his White House Spokesman for allowing the brouhaha to exist and for their perpetual promotion of Obama inspired conflict at the expense of those whom Obama agreed to accomodate.

THAT Democratic diplomacy earns consistent failure, whether abroad, in Washington DC, or any locale including Arizona State.

79 Contrary to Montini's Blog at the AZ Republic newspaper, ASU is holding firm.

The Arizona Republic

What do broadcaster Hugh Downs, former U.S. Supreme Court Justice Sandra Day O'Connor and humorist Erma Bombeck have in common?

An honorary degree from Arizona State University, something that, as of Friday, ASU had no plans to bestow on President Barack Obama, the university's commencement speaker on May 13.
