Despite Spin, Obama Is In Fact Cutting the Defense Budget

No, he's not growing the budget overall, as he claims. He's cutting and pretending he's not cutting.

And he's not just cutting the projected growth. He's cutting.

For example:

As has been reported, the 4% increase in defense spending proposed by Secretary Gates is actually 4% less than what the Joint Chiefs of Staff wanted; and, if taken alongside the fact that this budget attempts to fold in spending previously funded by supplemental war budgets, the supposed 4% increase is actually a $8 billion cut in defense spending. The Army is worst hit by folding supplemental spending into the base budget, as it was receiving the most ad-hoc funding for Iraq and Afghanistan.

In case you didn't catch that, the cost of Iraq and Afghanistan operations has been handled outside the usual budgeting process, with special ad-hoc measures passed to fund the costs of actually fighting; Obama now intends to cover those costs within the actual budget, so that the costs of those wars now is counted as part of the budget and hence, even if Obama nominally grows Defense's total budget, it would constitute a cut, because Defense had been getting billions in supplemental funding that is now ended.

It's like a traveling salesman whose company pays for his hotel expenses and per-diem food expenses. Then stops paying those costs, making the salesman pay for them out of his own pocket, but boosts his base salary by a small amount.

And then tells him, "I just gave you a raise. What are you complaining about?"

Not only is he cutting the big-ticket items, he's cutting the number of combat brigades from 48, as Bush had planned, down to 45.

Apparently the world just got three combat brigades safer when we weren't looking.

"Indefensible:" That's the headline on the Weekly Standard's article on the one government institution Obama is willing to cut. He lies in the name of "honest budgeting."

And more on those big-ticket items being cut.

Senator Inhofe promises to fight the cuts tooth and nail.

1 His hypocrisy is exposed on this:  If all that "stimulus", government-made jobs, are so damn good, why cut all those high-paying defense jobs?

So when Obama said he'd go line-by-line in the budget and eliminate waste, he was specifically talking about the defense budget and by waste he meant vital national security.

Meanwhile, Obama hired some asshole named Van Jones to be head of some cockamamie "Green Jobs" department.

What the fuck is a fucking green job, muthafucka? And why isn't the MSM curious enough to ask Obama about these mysterious green jobs?

And independent of the cloaked top-line cut described by Ace above, missile defense (i.e. Missile Defense Agency) sees its budget explicitly cut by $1.4 billion or 15%.

That's not budgetary prestidigitation or smoke and mirrors or monkeying around with growth rates --- that's outright cutting. FY09 was around $10 billion, FY10 will be $8.6 billion.

I've always wondered what a "green job" is too. For once couldn't someone ask "could you give an example of a green job which will be created".  So far the explanations have been installing thermal windows and extra insulation.

Governor Jenny of Michigan has been touting the electric car battery factory to be set up in her state as "green jobs". Wait until the environmental lawyers get hold of that one, complete with pictures of the moonscape around the nickel processing plant in Canada.

So far the only green jobs I've seen created are the accountants counting Algore's money from his "carbon trading credit" shell game. Lots of green dollars there.

God didn't you post an article from Closing Velocity where some idiot tells us these cuts are quite acceptable?  Yeah the fleet's smaller than any time since 1912, when various nations who love and honor us are expanding their fleets.  Obama is cutting our Air Forces so we can repeat sending our aviators to be slaughtered in obsolete aircraft just as they were in 1942 in Buffalos, P-39s, Vindicators, and Devastators.  Congress couldn't see the need for a modern Air Force in the thirties either.

The military won't be on a maintenance footing, it will revert to cannibalizing itself just as it did in the seventies.   Worse our enemies will read this as an indication that President Zero will not engage or stop aggression.

And he will not nor will the military be able to.  Obama combined with Bush's policies have denied the military the equipment it requires.  Why did we spend millions developing the over weight and inflexible MRAP when the South Africans had developed effective COIN vehicles twenty years ago?  The MRAP weighs approximately the same as a Sherman tank.  Try using it off road or transporting by air.

We will not be a carrier down, we will eliminate an entire carrier battle group.  This means an air wing will go along with an additional ten-fifteen additional battle group vessels and their crews.

The F-22 gone.   So the F-15 will continue on for how long?  Its all ready older than some of its pilots.  And the promise of the F-35?  Sure I believe Obama and the tooth fairey, and in unicorns.

If he is re-elected or retains a majority in both houses for four years I believe we can expect aggression, chaos, and an American unlike that we all knew.  But cheer up it will be an America that the Rev. Wright, Helen Thomas, and Pelosi will love.

Maybe the Pentagon doesn't have any "shovel ready" projects

If they would go ahead and take care of all those people at GITMO they would have a "shovel ready project".

Sure. But the're outdated or must be shared (textbooks) and crumbling (bridges). You are example A in what happens when there is poor education.
Educated enough to know the differences between federal and state responsibilities.

So, why do Canadians have to get treatment in the U.S. when we haven't been spending worth a shit on defence since the mid-1960s? And bridges collapse here even though we've only been torturing and killing for the U.N. for the past 40 years, until Afghanistan.

virtually every othjer dept. in the federal government is increasing it's budget, except for the Military...

is Obama aware that we are still fighting two wars?

or does he get his jollies when our soldiers die?

Obama is a dangerously stupid and/or naive, can our country survive 4 years with him as President? this guy is so incredibly weak he is inviting our enemies to attack us, i've said it before and i'm not afraid to say it again, Obama will be the cause of more american deaths by far than Bush, he may even rival Lincoln for number of dead americans on his watch, you may think i'm crazy, but unless Obama makes a major change in course, or someone tells him to STFU it's going to happen, our enemies are licking their chops right now.

86 Romperrowdy,,,education funding has become colossal scam . Only 35 cents of every education dollar makes it to the classroom . The rest goes into bureaucratic rat holes. An old friend of mine left the building trades to become a shop teacher . He , at least was honest enough to realize that he'd grasped the brass ring . Of the seven hours he spent at the school house he actually worked about two hours . With wages and benefits he was making around 60 grand a year . This was in the rural south , too .
Take your crumbling schools , pity the poor children , doom and gloom bullshit ,and let me say with the greatest respect and admiration . ( not really ). Go fuck yourself .

87 Well, let's see if it's as bad as the last time...

Anybody remember algore's speech: 'The Era of Big Government is Over'

He proudly announced the sacking of 800,000 federal employees...

He sorta forgot to mention that they were all members of the US military...he also sorta forgot to mention the fact that Bubba's administration added 200,000+ bureau-rats to the payroll.

Ahhhh...let the good times roll baby...hopey/changey will save the planet...if it doesn't get us all dead [or enslaved...] first.

Amazing how donks never, ever change, and how [nearly] nobody in the drive-by ever bothers to notice/inform these things to the masses...
