| Here We Go....Somali Pirates Hijack American Flagged Ship, 20 US Citizens On Board UPDATED: Crew Has Regained Control Of The Ship.... 2nd Update: Not So Fast, Captain May Still Be Held![]() The US crew of a ship hijacked by pirates off the coast of Somalia has retaken control of the vessel, according to Pentagon sources. Unnamed US defence officials said one pirate had been captured by the crew of the Danish-owned Maersk Alabama, which was seized earlier in the Indian Ocean. The status of the other pirates was unknown, but officials said they were "in the water".FNC says the crew has control of the ship and captured one of the pirates. Thomas Jefferson emailed to say, "Fuck yes!" UPDATE 2: FNC is saying the captain of the ship might still be held hostage. There's a lot of uncertainty right now. Original post: Given all of the ships that have been hijacked recently, this was just a matter of time. Somali pirates hijacked a U.S.-flagged, Danish-owned container ship on Wednesday with 20 American crew on board in a major escalation in attacks at sea off the Horn of Africa nation, officials said. Andrew Mwangura, coordinator of the Mombasa-based East African Seafarers' Assistance Program, told Reuters the 17,000 ton Maersk Alabama had been seized off Mogadishu far out in the Indian Ocean, but all its crew were believed to be unharmed. So far it seems the pirates have been interested in the big payout and I don't think they've killed anyone (though I'm not 100% sure of that). Here's hoping the Americans are safe and freed soon. Over to you Mr. President. And just a bit of free advice, I don't think the pirates are going to accept a DVD box set, a couple of trinkets from the White House gift shop and iPod with your greatest hits as part of the ransom. On Fox early this morning they were talking about this and one of the talking heads said that they could not have weapons on board. I think that is bullshit. Posted by: Vic at April 08, 2009 08:48 AM (f6os6) 2

In a sane world Seal Team Six would be going in and the 6th fleet would be en route to obliterate every coastal village in Somalia known to harbor pirates.
Instead teleprompter will want to have dialogue and fellatiate the egos of the pirates based on his new great idea of trying to make friends in the Muslim world; irregardless of the reality that most members have no intention of ever being friends with the western world. Posted by: Vic at April 08, 2009 08:48 AM (f6os6) Why? They aren't wild eyed jihadis who are beheading the crews, they just want money. These pirates are thugs but like many thugs they are businessmen. As far as I know they haven't hurt, let alone killed, any of the captured crew. Yeah, a few weeks or in some cases months sitting around isn't any fun but these merchantmen didn't sign up to get into gun battles over containers full of TVs, stuffed animals and car parts. Would you be willing to get into a firefight (that you are untrained for) to save your bosses property (that's insured) from someone who you are almost positive isn't going to hurt you? I know they are well paid, but I don't think they are paid enough for that. This is a job for governments. We should be blockading their ports and using some of those Dick Cheney assisination squads to kill the leaders of the gangs not asking merchant sailors to play Navy SEAL. And where is all the money going from the ships the pirates seize? Did the standard of living for people in Somalia rise significantly last year or has the money gone to fund terorist actions in Somalia and other countries? Somali pirates are the perfect enemy for the Obama administration. The only way they could be a better enemy is if they were white supremacist south african pirates. This is the perfect opportunity Obama to look tough on foreign policy with out alienating any one of real importance (if we kill one pirate do we create 100?) The one thing I've seen so far about Obama is that he does not like to make hard choices(he's only against cost effective missile defense, etc). My predictation is that it is go time against the pirates and more popularity for Obama and complete inaction against Iran and the Norks.

No, we had the Marines since 10 Nov 1775. They started in a tavern, BTW. 1. I have never seen anyone post a link or a quote of the actual law
2. If it is against “international law” to have guns onboard a ship why the fuck are they not stopping all the suspicious looking craft out there and taking their guns?
3. International law only applies if you sign the treaty; I haven’t signed any treaties. Posted by: Vic at April 08, 2009 09:25 AM (f6os6) 56

I don't know what the deal is, with this being a Danish-flag ship, but not too long ago the U.S.-citizen crews of U.S.-flag ships were armed and were trained. They had rifles and handguns and were required to re-qualify regularly. Maybe the rules are different if it's a Danish-flag ship. Posted by: Brewdog at April 08, 2009 09:25 AM (jg+Fr) 57

No guns on merchant ships due to liability. Local laws don't apply at sea, but once the ship goes to port, they do. Pirates probably didn't know it was an American flag ship until they got onboard. And they're not "pirates" until they actually attack, otherwise they're just "fisherman" with lawyers looking to dip into the pockets of rich multinational companies.
I was in the Gulf of Aden in January and February, these fishing boats come zooming at you, then turn and the guys wave, it's a big joke to them. Maersk is a Danish company, but has an American brank, Maersk Lines Ltd. to deal with Jones Act and government cargoes. So when the pirates saw a Maersk hull, they couldn't know that it wasn't one of the international Maersk ships, flagged ... wherever that may be? Marshall Islands, Bahamas, Liberia ... don't know, doesn't matter. Posted by: Marine Engineer at April 08, 2009 09:30 AM (J02cg) 63
from the article..."20,000-tonne German container vessel. Interfax news agency said the Hansa Stavanger had a German captain, three Russians, two Ukrainians and 14 Filipinos on board."
See, this is the typical crew of a container ship. "A Moller-Maersk spokesman said it had been transporting general goods to Mombasa from Djibouti when it was attacked." Right. I wonder if Maersk even normally covers this route - Djibouti is a tiny desert country. What are they shipping to Mombassa? Oh, but the USA does have a base there with the French. What will happen? An apology to Somalia - and the world - for Mogadishu, and a (hushed up) ransom, followed by an announcement that the hostages and ship are being released "To show the merciful side of Islam." Followed, at a decent interval, by more hijackings, once word leaks out that Obama will not fight. Posted by: Josef K. at April 08, 2009 09:37 AM (Ohodx) 69

It sure ain't containers of toys from China going to Europe that's for sure" The ship was a U.S. Flag vessel. Under American law, any U.S. flagged merchant vessel must have an all American crew. Because these ships are expensive to operate, they typically transport cargo between U.S. ports. The Jones act prohibits foreign flag vessel from carrying cargo from one U.S. port to another. Don't know why a U.S. flag vessel was operating in these waters. Perhaps an invitation to piracy that can then be met with a violent response from the U.S. Navy? Joe Biden spoke about a major international incident testing the young Lightworker, and warning that whoever did it would find out that "This guy has steel in his spine." Well, it ain't a major incident I guess, but on the scope of what could happen, it's a relatively easy one. Maybe kind of a warmup to what is probably in the wings at some point over the next few years. 20 US citizens going about their business taken hostage. As far as I know Somalia and the pirates don't have nukes. They don't have the trendy underdog PC status of the Palestinians or even the Muslim terrorists (at least, yet). A vigorous response could cut this stuff off at the knees, and send a bit of a message that the guy is not a total appeasor. Will he respond firmly, in a prompt manner after a reasonable time to think it out and plan? Let's see if the steel is there. Posted by: RM at April 08, 2009 09:48 AM (1kwr2) 79
Don't know why a U.S. flag vessel was operating in these waters.
a typical scenario would be that the ship brought military cargo to the war zone, then found some other cargoes to move while they were already over there. Posted by: Marine Engineer at April 08, 2009 09:49 AM (J02cg) 80
So all the WH could give as a response is that they're monitoring the situation and they hope no one gets hurt? They couldn't even pretend to be outraged by the fact that American citizens sailing under an American flag were kidnapped by pirates?
Posted by: Slublog at April 08, 2009 09:51 AM (qjKko) 81
If the ship was unarmed, it was by company policy, not US law.
Any US vessel can carry weapons, provided all federal laws are followed. The usual means of dealing with gun fearing wussies ruling foreign ports is to have an arms locker, and to allow said wimps to put a seal on it while in their port. Mind you, this won't help much when dealing with some worthless cleptocrat ... Mexico is a good example. Posted by: Kristopher at April 08, 2009 09:52 AM (EqbaN) 82
Islamic pirates? Errr, uhhm, do we have anyone who speaks Islamic?

Pirates are, under longstanding international law, hostis humanis generis (enemies of all mankind). It is not merely our right but our duty to pursue them to the ends of the earth. A good fraction of the world's shipping goes through the Gulf of Aden en route to the Suez canal. Right now, we can ill-afford them having to take a 10,000 mile detour round the Cape of Good Hope. A bunch of shoeless jackanapes holding modern naval powers to ransom should be deeply unpalatable.
The idea of using I MEF as an Einsatzgruppe is a bit too red-meat for the current bunch of pussies in government anywhere. As an alternative I suggest parking an Ohio-class sub off the coast and slagging down coastal Somalia with a half-dozen W-88s. Then turn round and go, "who, me?"
Posted by: David Gillies at April 08, 2009 10:07 AM (2FZO3) 84
"a typical scenario would be that the ship brought military cargo to the
war zone, then found some other cargoes to move while they were already
over there."
Good point, Marine Engineer. But why go via Cape of Good Hope instead of the Suez? Daily hire on these vessels is enormous, so would think that the owners would have chosen a faster route. This was a container vessel, so it was likely bound for Europe or Eastern Seaboard of the U.S., although I suppose it could have been bound for South Africa. #63 - Djibouti has a fairly significant port, since it serves as the end of the rail line and highway from Ethiopia, which is landlocked. It handles about 300,000 twenty foot containers per year, or about like Portland, Oregon. Djibouti is used by many European shipping lines that go through the Suez Canal.

Since Maersk does not call at Mogadishu (very few lines do) the Kenyan aid would have been unloaded in Mombasa and trucked from there north to Somalia and west to Uganda. It would have been food aid from Europe probably, transshipped in Djibouti and going to Mombasa. Given the fact that the vessel first stopped in Djibouti, the pirates would have known its approximate schedule. Container ships going from Europe to South Africa via Suez like to swing out wide in to the mid-Indian Ocean to avoid the pirates, though in the case of a short hop like this it is probably unlikely.

You take enough unrelenting crap from liberals, as Charles Johnson has, you get to wanting to show you're a good guy after all. Not many people can avoid the temptation after enough slagging by the leftyliars. In Johnson's case, it was years. So now he's all about evolution vs. creationism, anti birth-cert questions (with enough vicious sneering that he's going to have a hard time climbing down if there turns out to be a problem), two issues he could profitably have left alone given his earlier efforts, and looking most carefully at the possibility of "racism" in others' concerns about radical Islam. Yes, this is very impolitic of those "Americans." They shouldn't want to marginalize themselves in the court of world opinion. Moderates will be repelled. They should not have "taken back control of the vessel." They should have "ceded to itinerant maritime Somalis a minority voice in the direction of the vessel's navigation and destination. Opportunity for greater participation in the vessel's disposition may be extended to the Somali ocean-going community at a later date." "Would you be willing to get into a firefight (that you are untrained for) to save your bosses property (that's insured) from someone who you are almost positive isn't going to hurt you?" That was the conventional wisdom for airline hijackings before 9/11, but on that day it got 3,000 people killed. I don't give a flying fuck about the property, I'd be willing to fight because I'm unwilling to roll over on my back, piss all over myself, and put myself at the mercy of these fucks. If somebody tries to rob me with a threat of deadly force, killing them (if I'm able) is not a last resort, it's the default response. Not to protect a few dollars in my wallet, but to protect and defend the fundamental concept that I have a right to be secure from such predation. Robbery (or piracy) should be a very dangerous profession. I'm very happy to hear that the crew of this ship was unwilling to be cooperative, subservient little dhimmis, and I hope the pirates thrown overboard made a tasty snack for the local shark population. I suppose Barack Obama will still pay them, then apologize for the US making them become pirates in the first place. Timothy Geithner will then announce the pirates now have enough money but are still on skaky enough ground to be eligible for bailout Funds. The lisping and sashaying Barney Frank will announce there are homes avaiable for them as soon as Jimmy Carter finishes building them. Senator Reid will try to interest them in a special land deal near Las Vegas, and Nancy Pelosi will push the Secret Service to allow them air time on Air Force 2.

Update - not as rosy as thought...
A crew member on the vessel hijacked by pirates is telling The AP that the ship's captain is still being held hostage. The American says negotiations are under way for his release. The AP called the ship's satellite phone. The man who answered it said the 20-member crew had been taken hostage but managed to seize one pirate and then successfully negotiate their own release. He says the crew has retaken control of the ship and the pirates are now in a lifeboat. But the man also says that they are holding the ship's captain hostage in the vessel. The man did not identify himself in the brief phone conversation. Government officials said details were murky and declined to confirm the report. Wow, things change quick on this site. So the captain is in a lifeboat with the pirates, and he is being held for ransom from there??? But the crew has control of the ship???
Posted by: unknown jane at April 08, 2009 01:39 PM (EpmMs) 194
There was a video of the head of Maersk about 1-2 hours ago who was refusing to confirm that the crew had retaken the ship. I knwe then there was more to the story than was being told on Fox. Hell...Fox was interviewing the sister of the captain and they were practically celebrating the event. Now, that poor gal is learning the truth, whatever that may be, and must be devastated. There still has notbeen confirmation as to whether the captain is beingheld on-board the ship or if they have taken him away. If we go weak here then we'll risk every other American crew that dares venture within hundreds of miles of Africa. These guys were captured 350 miles out in the Indian ocean. It seems that the pirates now have a mother ship out to sea from which they launch their attacks. We need to locate that ship and blow it to hell to be certain that the pirates who are holding the captain have absolutely nothing but 350 miles of water between their dingy and dry land and then see whether they choose life or death. Posted by: jmflynny at April 08, 2009 01:46 PM (iQkq2) 195
"We had one communication earlier today from the crew. We were told
they are safe. I will not confirm that they have retaken the ship,"
Maersk Line chief executive John Reinhart told reporters in Norfolk.
"This is going to Africa to people in need. We're just bringing relief cargo," he added, insisting that while the crew was trained in how to fend off pirates, "as merchant vessels, we do not carry arms." Why the fuck not? You would rather let 4 guys with rusty AKs take a whole ship and threaten the crew instead. Assholes. Posted by: Jaleel White at April 08, 2009 01:47 PM (Q1lie) 196
Jaleel...I think that by "We do not carry arms" he means that they do not carry arms cargo.

CNN's got the best on it right now. Crew exchanged the prisoner pirate for the captain, bad guys didn't git the captain back. US warship en route but 3 hours away. Me personally I'm hoping for some kind of SEAL insertion faster than that. Posted by: Prufrock at April 08, 2009 02:06 PM (QMJqR) 198
The commercial shipping companies are run by bean counters ashore, who know to the fractional penny how much it should cost to run any given ship every mile at every speed in every region, in every weather condition.
No shit. They don't even authorize a course change for weather evasion unless their spreadsheets show the cost of the alteration is less than the probable cost of weather damage. Google "APL China" for some pictures of what happens when they guess wrong. So far as they're concerned, it makes more sense to work the percentages, accept the periodic highjacking, make the payoff, and settle with their insurers. So no guns, no training for the crew, no embarked tactical teams. The notable exception, as has been noted before, is Military Sealift Command. MSC ships have crew members with firearms qualifications and tactical training, and most commercial ships contracted to MSC embark teams of armed security specialists. One of the companies heavily used in the Gulf, Red Sea, and Indian Ocean employs Ghurkas. But bear in mind that commercial operators go strictly by the bottom line. I am completely outraged that untrained, racist sea yokels would take it upon themselves to deal so harshly with their most honorable Somalian guests. I'm afraid their mere request to borrow a cup of sugar from the Americans was misinterpreted and met with undeserved hostility. I realize that sugar has become a scarce commodity in Somalia due to American imperialism and war mongering. I would like to apologize to the good people of Somalia and am setting up talks to heal the rift caused by American agression. In addition, I will be providing free sugar for all of you wonderful Somali people who were victimized by our trespassing in your peaceful waters.

DrewM:Why? They aren't wild eyed jihadis who are beheading the crews, they
just want money. These pirates are thugs but like many thugs they are
businessmen.
Al Quaida pays the most for American hostages, so these businessmen would sell to them ASAP. The crew realized this, and proceeded to beat these little thugs senseless with pipewrenches ... in fact, I'll bet those skinny little assholes probably taunted them with such a threat, just before they got the crap beaten out of them and thrown overboard. You fail. Posted by: Kristopher at April 08, 2009 04:35 PM (EqbaN) 215
You're right, Java. Any captured pirates should be Mirandized immediately, be provided with one of the crew's cabins, and given an OJ trial upon their return to the States with Ramsey Clark leading the defense. The crew should be separated from each other and polygraphed. Pending the results of the investigation, hey should be suspended from duty and their wages frozen. If any excessive force was used, they should be duly charged and face the law. If any guns were used by the crew, gun violation penalties should apply as well. In the case of the "overboard" pirates, wrongful death suits by the pirates' bereaved relatives should be subsidized by the US. An apology should be issued forthwith to the sovereign nation of Somalia. Is that better?

Java, Not one poster on this thread inferred in any way they had saved the ship. I don't think it's that hard to interpret the posts here as simply being glad that the good guys won one from the mad dogs of the world. I suspect that does not resonate with you. I do not recall any posts inferring Obama caused the piracy. I (and probably 99.99% of conservatives) blame the pirates, the same way I blame the guy who shot someone rather than blaming the gun. However, he is the one who has reaped the electoral rewards from his rhetoric of "smart diplomacy" and his critiques of Bush's "cowboyism". Anytime there was a terrorist attack, rather than blame the terrorists for their evil deeds, the left didn't hesitate to lay it at Bush's doorstep instead and whine that he was recruiting for the terror groups. And you laid it at conservatives' doorsteps for supporting the warmonger President. And, guess what, the mewling and puking worked. You've got the President YOU wanted. Well, OK, but Obama and the media promised us a new way, and that after his election all the people in other parts of the world would treat us with renewed respect and love. So maybe you should not be too surprised that when it does not happen that way, some people might just figure you and Obama may own a little piece of it. I don't like feeling that way particularly. But after being sneered at for eight years every time there was a problem and being told it might not have happened if not for the malignant presence of George Bush, I'm a bit more edgy these days. And since you made it personal with people on this site, ask yourself what it says about you that instead of being glad the pirates are maybe getting a little well deserved comeuppance (if things work out well), you're focused on bitching at people who ARE glad.
