| "Going Galt" On S-CHIP [Komrad Vinnieovich]Thanks to President Barack Hussein Oteleprompter's promise to not raise taxes on any family making under $250,000 a year (or $200,000 as an individual), some friends and I have decided that it's a good time to quit using tobacco products. Because, after all, the new tobacco taxes only affect the rich. Or at least they will, because now only the rich can afford them. OnComments1

I remember some town hall talk show back in the 90s when Ratface Waxman was on to scream loudly about the EEEEEVVVILLL tobacco companies, all the millions of people they killed, and how they were going to kill us all unless Ratface himself took charge of the problem

I quit over a year ago, not had one puff. Still sort of miss it. I quit cold turkey after several attempts after smoking for 20 years, starting when I was 12 (what can I say, I'm English and I needed something to take the smell of beer off my breath). Couple of keys :
1) Don't quit for like 3 days, and think you can have a quick puff because you managed to stay clean for a few days. A quick puff will become one cigarette which will turn into a whole pack, that turns into a pack a day etc... 2) The key is to learn how to do everything without having a cigarette in your hand. Driving, watching tv etc.. I used to love putting the kid to bed, coming down stairs, making a coffee, having a cig, reading ace with my coffee. I learned to do it without smoking. At work, I'd fix a problem in some code, and normally, go for a cigarette, I had to learn to reject those, Ah, I'll just go for a cigarette moments. You keep finding yourself having that instinctual urge to reach for a cigarette and then you'll catch yourself "Ah, I don't smoke anymore'. It's like that for the first few months, but only the first couple of weeks is where you are really craving it. 3) Try whyquit.com - it's a bit preachy and feel good (kind of like AoS ;-), but it has a number of scary stories, tips, hints and so on (just like this AoS). I went flying a kite with my son the other day, he let go, I had to leg it after the kite, caught up with it and realized I wasn't out of breath. I'm fucking James Bond I am. Oh, and sticking it to the man is aaaawesome! Posted by: Ring at April 05, 2009 10:11 PM (FPnM5) 50

I quit smoking years ago after a zillion abortive attempts. Finally succeeded using a combination of hypnosis and nicotine gum. It sounds like you're committed to trying cold turkey, but if you're one of those people who need to smoke their 1st cigarette within a half hour of waking up, consider starting off with the gum or lozenge. Good luck! Quitting's rough, but you won't believe how much better you feel once you succeed. Oh, my other tip: Get a big ass jar and, every day, deposit the $ you would've spent on your habit. It's a good motivator and you'll have a real nice slush fund in a few months. Posted by: tiredwench at April 05, 2009 10:13 PM (ulSJI) 53
Chantix works and you don't have to even want to quit.
But if you don't quit, smoke roll your owns. $3.50 for a pack of Drum and you can get 40 smokes out of it. You can probably get Top or Bugler for $1.50. Great tasting tobacco too. Posted by: casel21 at April 05, 2009 10:14 PM (fk5at) 54

I quit for good many years ago by using two techniques: 1. Got shitfaced drunk New Years Eve and smoked a whole pack (normally I smoked about 3 packs per week). Next morning (I think it was the next morning...) I didn't want no cigarettes, and that helped get me started on cold turkey. I was never the type to roll out of bed and light up anyway. 2. Listened to my kid. I was showing her how to look both ways before crossing the street to be safe, and she looked up at me and asked me, so how come you smoke, Daddy? As they say, out of the mouths of babes. Actually #1 was a response to #2. Posted by: sherlock at April 05, 2009 10:18 PM (L4jPh) 57

Seems like I heard somewhere a couple of weeks ago, maybe even here at moronville, that the vaunted Obama $13 per week tax cut was going into affect in March. You can't tell by looking at my checks cause they always vary due to me being all workaholic and shit and picking up all the extra hours I can get, but my wife's on salary and her check remains constant. Best I can tell her check increased by $1.65 last month. Now I've got a BS in Mathematics, but even if I didn't I'd be pretty sure that $1.65 per month is not the same as $13 per week. Surely that cocksucker wasn't lying to us. Surely not. But anyway, we're gonna get busy stimulating the shit out of the economy with that extra $1.65. I'd invest in Hershey stock if I was y'all. An extra Reece's or two per month may change the world.

Good luck with that. So many people get them delivered here now the mailman has like 10 boxes every day. If they crack down you can always go to the reservation and stock up. Last year, my governor, Jim (30weight) Doyle imposed a 1.00 tax on a pack of smokes, on top of the existing state and federal exise taxes. So, I started rolling my own. A one pound bag cost 23.00, and papers cost 3.00, and made 2 cartons and change, lasting 3 weeks. This year, the gov wants another 75 cents per pack, the feds tossed on 63 cents, and I laughed because I had found the loophole. Sure, it's a bother to sit down for an hour and a half to roll a week's worth, but I watch football every Sunday, and now 24 on mondays, and the entire time I roll cigarettes, I'm taking pleasure in sticking it back to the government sideways and breaking it off. Then somebody at work told me there would be a HUGE increase in the tax on raw tobacco, which of course I didn't believe, so I check the porkulus bill, and tucked in with the other tobacco taxes was a 2200 percent increase in the tax on bag tobacco! what to do here..oh yeah..fucking eleventy!111!!1!1 So I got myself 11 pounds of tobacco, a whole bunch of papers, and have been slowly cutting back. I got enough to last to my birthday in July, then it's cold turkey time for me too. Good luck to all of you who try to quit, I am going to use my rage as a motivator. It should work, I've got plenty. Tobacco tax for SCHIP is the bait for the bait and switch. They don't expect nor do they desire for revenues to grow from the tax, but they do want the middle class health entitlement to be put in place. Tell people it's coming from income taxes, and they are more critical of it, tell people that you want to tax an "undesirable" behavior to pay for it, and it's ok, right? The SOcial MarketPlace (SOMP) reality is politicians and their SCHIP program don't provide health care -- health care providers choose who gets care.
SCHIP is little more than Medicaid program expanded to include all sorts of folks. This doesn't change the poor reimbursement for SCHIP/Medicaid care. Rather, it's likely to make it worse. As a simple exercise in how the SOMP works, call around to a few local clinics and try to set up a Medicaid/SCHIP appointment. You'll probably quickly find that most clinics have one of various policies to limit/ration the number of Medicaid/SCHIP patients they see. Some may not see them at all, some may limit to X patients/time period, some may only provide appointments to fill in cancelations, etc, etc. The Medicaid reality is these programs frequently pay 40% or less of regular fees. More than it costs to provide the care in many cases. While politicians have no trouble paying top dollar to build roads, schools, and teach kids in poor areas, they apparently have no trouble paying 40% or less for health care. If politicians really wanted to provide quality care to those truly in need, they'd make the unreimbursed cost of charity care tax deductible -- you'd have providers falling all over themselves to provide top notch care without the red tape rationing of Medicaid. There would be a self limiting feature in such a system -- Providers would only provide as much care as required to end up paying little or no income taxes... Expanding the number of folks on SCHIP is only going to make it harder for the truly needy to get health care, as the line to get second rate Medicaid care will be many times longer. So, while the politicians on the left may jump up and down for expanding SCHIP, all they've really done is make things worse for those of limited means that they supposedly care so much about. Sad.... On the bright side, if a lot of fools drop their regular health insurance for SCHIP taxpayer welfare coverage, it's likely to make it easier to get into see your doctor, while the SCHIP/Medicaid waiting lines will get longer and longer.... My husband promised to quit smoking after we got married-when he came home smelling like a ham house, I went to a different bedroom. Not another cigarette touched his lips. He never looked back, after 17 years. (And I was much happier!!) But now, we are both cotemplating it, just trying to deal with the stress of this wretched beast of a government. But not to fund SCHIP or any other entitlement program for the hands out brigade. I like the idea of growing tobacco for fun and profit, but would that fall under the dreaded HR 875? Would the government confiscate my property because I didn't grow tobacco properly? We currently live in a former Soviet bloc country, and I can tell you, Communism RUINS a nation. These people have been free from the Soviet Union's shackles for over twenty years, but they still walk around with dour faces, and stand in lines. They haven't learned a thing about customer service, because that's not necessary in a command economy-you are told what you can and can't buy. The buildings they currently build look like Soviet apartment houses in three years. The food is nasty (how much cabbage can a person eat?) and the resulting smells perfume the air on all the public transport. Do you want that in America?? Heck no. (Sorry, my husband gave up cigarettes, I gave up profanity. It's just as hard, and there's no gum or lozenge for that.) Now I see my beloved country facing the prospect of becoming what the country I am living in broke free from, and I am heartbroken. Sorry for the rant. No curse words, no cigarettes, and we aren't allowed guns here, so no hobo hunting (although the fields are ripe.) Pray for me. Posted by: mokimoki at April 06, 2009 05:55 AM (dtD0d) 124

Growing tobacco is professional-level gardening. It will grow, but needs a lot more care than corn and beans to get it started. It does not ward off pests; it protects your tomatoes by attracting the pests to itself. Once you have a crop, you can easily dry it to smoke in a pipe. But making cigarettes is a long complicated process: boil the leaf, add a sticky agent like sorghum or syrup, carefully press into blocks (while watching for mold), dry completely, grate into shreds, then roll. And the filter tubes aren't cheap; it's like the primer shortage for reloaders, and cotton is hard to grow. It makes an interesting hobby, but actually producing enough for regular use requires survivalist-level commitment. Short version: I do not have to go to work. In separate seasons, I've proven to my satisfaction that I am able to grow and preserve my own food, manage a few animals, brew my beer, press my wine, distill liqueurs, maintain the machinery, build the house, load the ammo and grow tobacco (have not mastered weaving or tanning). Doing those all at the same time is more than a full time job, and you can't do anything else. I'll have to do it all if/when SHTF--supplies will be harder to order--but, short run, I choose my battles so I get out more. A lot of this Galt talk is such loose shit that it borders on japery. Go talk to people who really do it all. It's desperately hard. The point of the Gulch parable was that those survivors set up a division of labor and a healthy trade economy. It was the failed society that devolved into subsistence. It's far easier, even now, to make this government go away, than to establish a million independent farmsteads. Some advice from someone who quit after a heart attack:
1. You will NEVER get rid of the desire for a cigarette. It has been 3 years since I quit and every now and then I still get the urge.
2. For at least the first 6 months you will have to stay away from old places where you smoked a lot, like favorite bars etc. Also stay upwind of smokers because smelling the smoke will make you want one.
3. COLD TURKEY is the only way to go. I had tried all kinds of smoke weaning programs – no workee. Cold turkey is tough but it is the only way. Posted by: Vic at April 06, 2009 07:23 AM (f6os6) 131

I resent that the gov't selects a group of people to punitively tax because they feel it is unhealthy. It would be great if people banded together to protest the tobacco tax and demand that taxation be equal across all product lines and not pinpoint users of a particular product. Why not overtax high end wines, food at an expensive NYC restaurant, the expensive beef that Obama served at the White House and so forth. How about taxing everyone who is a runner and uses a park path for running - let these so-called healthy people kick in money for health care - not just smokers. There must be a way to find out if this is legal - to overtax a portion of the population.

Don't buy from the Indian reservations. They have to report who purchases from them and that is how the states track you down.
You can, however, buy from out of the country. If you buy the ones for the EU market they taste a little different but are much cheaper. There are also foreign sellers who will ship US smokes. Those cartons are about $56 each including shipping. Because they are based out of the country, they are outside of US jurisdiction. You could still run into problems but the risk is much smaller than with an Indian reservation purchase. Screw quitting, I'd rather keep smoking and avoid the tax. I know it's bad for my health but I'm too much of a rebel to do what the fucking nanny state demands. Hell I'd be more inclined to quit if they would stop fucking with our lives. I have been saying that for years. Here in the South taxes on cigarettes were traditionally low but they more than made up for it on the taxes on alcohol. I have maintained that singling out things that people looked on as “sin” for punitive taxes was a violation of the 14th amendment. Unfortunately the courts, being liberal, have never agreed with that.
But not to worry; Il DuceII is going to fix that for you. He is going to have punitive taxes on everything. Cigarettes is just one step in the process. Posted by: Vic at April 06, 2009 08:57 AM (f6os6) 156

Galt didn't quit why should any of us? The point of going Galt isn't to deprive the govt. of something, it is to work in opposition to it. In order to stop the motor of the world, you have to throw a wrench in somewhere. Gather friends, find a sympathetic grower, start a private brand using non-US funds or favors to barter. I don't know the whole workings of it, but I would think 100sq.ft. would grow enough for annual personal use. Of course location is an issue but global warming is going to make all of America suitible to grow tobacco soon. Surely you could dry it in one of those food dehydrators. And hydroponics are perfectly legal. Of course there is always Cuba if you really want to go Galt.

Behavior modification. Why is it that the Government can do it, but we can't seem to do it back to government.
I admire all of you that want to and claim to be quitting. But unfortunately, the government is going to claim this to be a huge success either way. They either get lots more income "FOR THE CHILDREN" tm ... or ... they stopped a lot of "bad" behavior. When there are actually good things that can be done instead ... kick a hippies ass, or hunt a hobo. Posted by: Mephitis at April 06, 2009 09:11 AM (ehXLT) 160

Yea, screw that. I'm gonna go do my social-conscience-charity-white-guilt thang and start goin to the Seminole's for my ciggies.
And, while I'm too lazy to do it myself, I have informed some local independent entrepreneurs that it may be to their economic benefit to re-sell some tax-free ciggies purchased from our beloved local Tribe to their friends. Simply charging just a little bit extra for transportation. Raising the tax only encourages the pure-free-market of the black-market system. The Free-Market always works. And, as usual in a capitalistic system, everybody wins. The Seminole Tribe gets their money, the businessperson gets their cut, and the end customer gets their product at a lower price. Screw the government, if they dinna spend so much money on worthless crap they wouldn't need...so much money. Now, raise the ciggie or beer tax to pay for summore F-22s, tanks, submarines and really big aircraft carriers, and/or to pay for combat veteran's medical bills... I'd be cool with that. I support the Drink For Freedom Bill! And the Smoke em if you got em For America Bill! Alternatively, Light One Up For the Troops, Fire it Up For the Troops, or Ciggarettes Kill...Terrorists! tax. (SRLY, any legislator reading this and thinkin the Drink For Freedom Bill(or any of the others), as described, is a good idea, show some ovarian or testicular fortitude and actually call it that, thnx) Posted by: KeaponLaffin at April 06, 2009 09:20 AM (vqFIE) 163
Best of luck with quitting. I tried everything and I found a product called Ariva. It's basically compressed tobacco that tastes like a breath mint. So instead of being hooked on cigarettes, I got hooked on these things since each one packs the same punch as a cigarette. They were a lot less cheaper than a pack a smokes ($2 - $3 a pack online) and they were easier to quit once I got used to not smoking. Just my personal experience. Sure it's not for everyone. I quit a few days ago when the price rose to about 8 bucks a pack here in Arizona. Doing well enough. The fed tax is one thing, the state tax increas, earmarked specifically is one that is really going to hurt them in the end. Wait, a take that back, it is going to hurt EVERYONE. 'Cause when the tax revenue falls way short, which it will, they are not going to cut program funding, they will simply cast a wider tax net to make up the shortfall.

I'm pretty sure that you have to have a BATF license for to grow Tobacco, in fact for each plant, and that your harvest would be subjected to taxation - even if not sold - for the crop to mearly exist meant it was therefor to be subject to the rule and order of law. So you cant legally grow your own, surely cant grow & give away, nor dare you sell any to your friends. OT Side story: ~20 years ago I ran Video-Assist Camera assisting a 35mm film crew making a Promo for Winston Salem - the main prop in the film were these wooden pallets stacked about 5 feet high with all of thier different cuts and cures of tobacco. They custom blended these together to reproduce a consistant brand&taste. The opening shot (and seen in most of the background) in the script was of a huge "select" warehouse FULL of these huge bales of tobacco: 150' wide (for dolly moves) and 3 shelves to the ceiling (for crane shots) and various work in progress pallettes scattered in the foreground. I arrived on set a day early just as the (Winston painted )18 Wheelers were departing from the warehouse. I dont smoke*, but it smelled really good! The Grips were cordinating how to move all the pallets around with the director to show the various colors and textures - some of the guys were climbing and walking around on top of the stacks of tobacco and got a warning that if they were not smokers they could get a skin contact overdose. Then THE MAN arrived: Several (Actual T-shirt wearing) BATF agents introduced themselfs and needed to have a little pow-wow with whom ever was "in charge here". What we had no concept of was that all this stuff wasnt our average movie prop - this stuff was MONEY! Hey, no big deal right; Winston had just dropped millions of dollars of it off here for FREE, right? It was'nt any worry to us about some of it being stolen. The problem was far worse as explained by teh BATF: We would be responsible for the TAXES LOST if any of it went missing, and that was some big bucks considering the tonnage! BATF thus made us hire 24/7 security and I'm sure weighed every pallet when it got shipped back. I felt sorry for the smoking actor because he had to do these deep long drags in just the exact lighting for 2 long days ! * Few of the advertising/winston marketing/execs/film crew smoked either. If you drive a car, I'll tax the street This i just it... I've been telling people this for years. When there are no smokers left to tax, what will they tax next? Gotta get the money from somewhere... although it will be more fair, seing as how less than 20% of the population smokes (and about 40% of those earn less than $90k a year). A punitive penalty IS NOT a reliable revenue tax. That's why many states have incredible fines for "throwing litter or burning objects along highways." They don't plan on making money from litterbugs, they plan on scaring littering wrongdoers away from it. The revenue shortfall for this bullSCHIP will be predictable if the desired smoking cessation happens. And then the Commiecrats will hit us ALL up with more taxes. Just think about that the next time you are tempted to join the anti-tobacco jihad. Some people think smoking is SO evil, taxes on it should be incredibly high. Okay, fine with me (no pun intended). But we CANNOT have a punitive penalty as a source of revenue. We have already passed the point of revenue maximization on smoking taxes.

I switched to e-cigarettes three weeks ago and have not looked back.
I like smoking, I refuse to quit, and the e-cigarettes are not taxed as a tobacco product. Plus they actually taste and feel like smoking even though the "Smoke" is only vapor. Naturally there are already efforts to make the e-cigarettes illegal, so anyone interested in e-smoking had best get one while they still can. There is also a good forum called "e-cigarette-forum dot com". Lots of information there about brands, form factor, refills, etc. So far within the last three weeks ... me, my wife, my boss, two co-workers and my brother-in-law have made the switch. Good luck to you, you can do it. I smoked over 2 packs a day for 30+ years, I loved my cigarettes. I quit 4 years ago using the Nicotrol Inhaler, a little cig shaped device with refillable nicotine cartridges-prescription only. Best high I ever got-bar none and I could use them anywhere real smokes were banned-flying overseas too. I was in hog heaven, high as a kite and I still had the hand-to-mouth thing going that I didn't get with the patch or the gum. I used the inhaler for almost a year and then carried it around empty for a few months because I was a little afraid to let it go. Every once in a while I get a craving, but it is fleeting. I have to say this is one of my proudest accomplishments, I had tried multiple times before, but always failed and figured I was just a big loser with no willpower. Every day at work I see patients who smoked and now have to deal with some awful health issues-it is far worse than you can imagine. Like I said, you can do this. I am a smoker that chooses to
roll my own and buy tobacco by the pound. (I make my cigarettes with a
machine and they look just like Factory Smokes)In the past, I was able
to make a carton for around $7-$10.00 depending on manufacturer sales
and coupons.
Thanks to this SCHIP bill passing, my favorite Tobacco has increased in price from $12.00lb.to $45.00 a pound on 4-1-2009. Posted by: ScottyDog at April 06, 2009 11:00 AM (3qrDD) 183
The $12.00 American Tobacco I used to buy has already been taxed to the hilt. In the last 4 years, it has increased by about $1.50 a pound every year with state and federal tax. Rolling Tobacco has to be highest taxed item in the history of the USA. This countries economy was founded on the sale of tobacco, read your US History. There would be no America without tobacco sales to Europe in the 1600-1700’s. It was the number one export crop in the USA for 150 years. By 1700, America exported 36 million pounds of tobacco a year to Europe. I have been making my own for about 15 years not just because of the cost but there are no chemicals added to roll your own tobacco like Marlboros or Camels that add Ammonia ect to get people hooked quicker. A $25.00 dollar per pound increase so families that make more than I do(250% of the poverty rate=60K right now) can get free health insurance off the backs of smokers. We are loosing our Freedoms and Liberty one by one in this country. I do not recognize the country I grew up in anymore. I think I will get into the smuggling business of tobacco just as the founding fathers did over the tea tax. I for one am hoping Americans finally wake up and start a revolution to throw the corrupt criminals in Wash DC in Prison for Treason. They no longer represent the people but the Rockefeller Elite One World Government crowd that ignore and abhore our Constitution. It is not just tobacco taxes people! They are systematically destroying private enterprise in this country one at a time. When it is your business, you will not be laughing. Many tobacco outlets have already gone out of business since April 1. I think I will get into smuggling tobacco and follow the lead of the founding fathers to avoid this outrageous excise tax. The feds added a clause to the SCHIP Bill(scroll to the last paragraph) fearing that smuggling was going to increase due to the cost increases they have imposed: DUH Posted by: ScottyDog at April 06, 2009 11:01 AM (3qrDD) 184

Picked up two packs and a subway (their meatball sandwich is my other really bad sin...) on Saturday and gave the clerk a twenty and my change was less than a buck. I have been toying with quitting for years too and now I have multiple motivations: health, cost, smell, and finally the damn taxes. A fine tea party tribute. Now I just need to find one in Austin as I am not sure I want to deal with the crowds at the Alamo this weekend.

@189 adolfo, Your welcome.
Keep in mind that the difference between the e-cig and the prescription inhaler is that the e-cig is meant as an alternative to smoking, where the significantly more expensive and much less satisfying prescription inhaler is a smoking cessation device. I don't intend to quit my nicotine habit. I LIKE smoking. I do object to the "sin" taxes and dictatorial social stigma, but have to admit that analog smokes smell like ... smokes. The e-cig's nicotine vapor is simply a nice clean, non-smelly, no ashes, alternative to smoking burning tobacco. An American in London: we went to the pub on Sunday. As I was coming out of the Gents' Room, I noticed a cigarette machine. Mind, this is a cigarette machine in a pub where no smoking is allowed in any pub in the land--go figure. Guess how much a pack of fags now costs in a pub? £6.30!!! Make that $9.38! And, had the pound not been de-valued because of Prime Minister Lickspittle and Barry ****ing everything up, that £6.30 would have been $12.91 a pack, a year ago. Try THAT for taxes!

Just get by the 3rd day and then it gets easier. Stop smoking related activities, like eating chocolate. Try and replace that smoking activity with something else like chewing gum. Good luck.
