North Korea Launches Missile (Bumped And Update)

Update: The White House has issued a statement. This is my favorite part:

North Korea’s development and proliferation of ballistic missile technology pose a threat to the northeast Asian region and to international peace and security. The launch today of a Taepo-dong 2 missile was a clear violation of United Nations Security Council Resolution 1718, which expressly prohibits North Korea from conducting ballistic missile-related activities of any kind. With this provocative act, North Korea has ignored its international obligations, rejected unequivocal calls for restraint, and further isolated itself from the community of nations.

We will immediately consult with our allies in the region, including Japan and the Republic of Korea, and members of the U.N. Security Council to bring this matter before the Council. I urge North Korea to abide fully by the resolutions of the U.N. Security Council and to refrain from further provocative actions.

After Obama acknowledges that the N. Koreans ignored UN Resolutions, he calls on the N. Koreans to abide by them. This is smart and tough diplomacy?

And our response is to "consult" with people who have done nothing of consequence on this issue and have shown they pretty much don't care about it.

Compared to this idiot, I'm starting to miss the days of clear eyed realism and muscular military posture of Jimmy Carter.

Watching the coverage on CNNI is simply nauseating. The anchors, reporters and guests are falling over themselves to remind us how important it is to only follow the diplomatic track but we can't push to hard because that could lead the North Koreans to walk away from whatever talks we can set up.

Of course they are going to walk away, it's the only way to get us to follow them and offer them ever greater inducements to come back.

Quality comment snark from "exceller" that's sadly all too true:

Obama used harsher language condemning the US for it's arrogant attitude towards Europe.

Original post:

I'm sure we're working on setting up a meeting to create a summit that will produce a strongly worded letter.

North Korea defiantly carried out a provocative rocket launch Sunday that the U.S., Japan and other nations suspect was a cover for a test of its long-range missile technology.

Liftoff took place at 11:30 a.m. (0230GMT) Sunday from the coastal Musudan-ri launch pad in northeastern North Korea, the South Korean government said. In Washington, the State Department also confirmed the launch.

The rocket flew over Japan and landed in the Pacific Ocean, the Japanese broadcaster NHK said, citing its government.

"Our primary concern is to confirm safety and gather information," Japanese Prime Minister Taro Aso told a news conference at his Tokyo office Sunday.

Too bad we don't have some sort of system that could intercept a missile like this. Oh wait we do, at least for now. Too bad we aren't willing to use it.

The left will no doubt ooh and ahh over the inevitable Obama talk about international cooperation and the need to get the UN involved. All of this will of course be compared to Cowboy Bush.

Just remember there are plenty of UN Resolutions on this matter, including one that says N. Korea can't do this (passed during the Bush Reign of Terror). Obviously the North Koreans were less than impressed with them.

It's ironic how the people who claim how important the UN s are the ones who do the most damage to it by demanding that no real actions be taken thus showing how impotent and irrelevant it is as an institution.

5 PRAGUE (Reuters) – President Barack Obama will call for the elimination of all nuclear weapons across the globe, in remarks on Sunday he hopes will lend credibility to his message in atomic disputes with Iran and North Korea.

This is what I just saw on HuffPo. This is his response? Is he going to offer our weapons up first or what? I have such sense of deja vu. I already did the 70's--don't wanna do it again.

Security Council diplomats said Friday that a draft resolution in circulation could reaffirm and tighten enforcement of the demands and sanctions of a resolution passed after North Korea conducted a nuclear test on 2006.

46 10 President Barack Obama will call for the elimination of all nuclear weapons across the globe,

Oh, shit.  THIS is a foreign policy?  Damned liberals and their Walt Disney view of the world.  He's going to get millions of Americans killed
________

The way I figure it, the fact that millions of Americans got killed would be irrelevant to Obama.  If we must die for his ideas, that's okay, because the important thing is that he gets to try out/play with all his ideas.

That's the sort of "test" Biden was talking about, where we wouldn't like how Obama responded, but we were supposed to have blind faith in him anyhow, and tell all our friends to, too.

At the time, I figured the "test" would be when Obama didn't respond properly to a threat, and that we were supposed to wait until he talked whoever out of whatever, even while the destruction was going on.  And I figure I was right.

In addition to millions of Americans getting killed being irrelevant to Obama, I would venture to guess that he might possibly enjoy that.  Being as he's so hot on all of us sacrificing and everything.

Us dying for his ideas would probably be just the sort of drama he likes, and what he figures we owe him anyway.  (Simply for being blessed by his existance and superiority in everything.)

Its going to happen eventually anyway and all allowing them to behave like this along with humoring the regime does is prolong the inevitable as well as the pain and suffering of the average north Korean at the hands of their own government. Its like removing a band aid, if you take it off slowly you just prolong the pain, whereas is if rip it off quickly it only hurts for an instant.

Yeah, and either divert or add to those G-20 funds.  As the joke goes, "A trillion here, a trillion there...pretty soon it adds up to real money."

Only a few months ago the joke was billions.

Posted by: sis at April 05, 2009 01:53 AM (hm0CN)

94 No, this cannot be true.

We were assured by Obama's administration that they trusted the North Koreans were really only launching a satellite and not launching a missile at all.  We even watched them dress down a military person who stated we could prepare to shoot down a missile as that was unnecessary and could provoke ill will.

Oh, that was yesterday's story wasn't it?

Sorry... we've always been at war with Eastasia.  We had no foreknowledge or preparation for this, and diplomacy will work wonders and show us to be tough and strong, and not at all foolish idiots incapable of seeing truth.

Silly me for remembering otherwise.  I don't know where I get these unauthorized memories.  I need to be briefed on the new "facts" of the day I guess to avoid these embarassing memories of the past.

Yes, because we all know that targeted strikes in a failing regime never produce any results.  And it's not like we have forces in the region or the country next door or several bases within bomber reach or allies in the region that would be more than willing to lend a hand.  It's not like the country in question has an infrastructure that could be easily knocked out without being completely destroyed, or lack of excess manufacturing capability or power generation capability.  Their army is in TIP TOP shape after yeasrs of economic sanctions and lack of hard currency for weapons maintenance.  I'm sure their capability to replenish their expended ammo far surpasses anything we could muster up.

Surely we must sit back and scold.

The rocket flew over Japan and landed in the Pacific Ocean, the Japanese broadcaster NHK said, citing its government.

Does this mean that North Korea won't be able to get HBO now because their satellite went into the ocean and not up in the air?  'Cause that would totally suck.

Maybe they'll be nice to us if Obamaprompter gives them technology so that their satellites don't end up in the ocean.

All we need to do is make a credible threat to unshackle the samurai and they'll fall all over themselves slapping Kim into line.

You mean some American leader should have taken care of Saddam Hussein back then?  Killed  bin  Laden, before 19 scumbags walked into the US and took flying lessons?

That is the best trump card the US has with China.  If the Chinese want to interfere with any US action in NKorea, tell them the US starts dropping leaflets, jamming and broadcasting on whatever NKorean radio/tv stations,  telling NKoreans:
"Nukes have been used along the DMZ and all the radiation will be spreading north. Head for China where you'll be welcomed, and you'll be safe"

113

"What can Obama do?  Bush destroyed any surplus American military power.

There's no way we could credibly threaten N. Korea now, let alone actually do anything."

Complete and total bullshit. The air assets in the Pac AO can wipe NKs infrastructure and military installations off the map in less than 70 hours.

The only tricky part of it would be the huge number of dug in artillery that the Norks have placed in range of Seoul. That could be destroyed in place before it was put to any effective use by a hard surprise air attack but it would put the SK citizens in that area in some danger.

Idiots can throw around the numbers that the Norks have in their military and cite such and such a weapon and list its stats, but in reality, the Nork military is a police state military ran by political appointees who's only "skill" is absolute obedience to and unthinking regurgitation of the propaganda of whatever degenerate filth is raised up as the figurehead of the cult of personality there.

Another fallacy is that PDRC is Norks friend and supporter. The Chinese hate the Norks and the Norks hate Chinese. The only time China has anything to do with Norkland is when it's cynical need to game something outweighs that hatred and that's not very often. China's main concern with Nork being brought to destruction is that China may end up holding the bag on reconstruction and/or refugee absorption.

The South Koreans have a rather large military of their own. That, combined with the MEF (division plus air wing) on Oki is enough to clean up the disease pit of North Korea in terms of boots on ground. The South Koreans are also very hesitant about bringing Norkland down due to the economic ramifications if they end up the ones stuck with the refugees and reconstruction.

The Norks were always the butt boys of the Soviet. The Soviets used the Norks as their proxies in lots of the dirty little jobs done during the cold war. Especially in the area of training and transporting cadre for the various leftist and/or islamic terror organizations. The Norks kept a regiment of Special Purpose Force troops at Madagascar just for that purpose. Don't know if that regiment is still there, though.

Much of the training for the Khmer Rouge and the islamo/commiebastard scum in the Philippines was also conducted by Norks on demand by the Sovs back in the day. The Chinese commiebastards also had a hand in the KR murder spree-ers, but most of that was through massive supplies of land mines to the KR.

I'm sure we're working on setting up a meeting to create a summit that will produce a strongly worded letter.

No. No, no, no, no,  no.  First, we send a polite memo with a box of top-shelf chocolate.  Then, we have a multi-party conference to determine whether further attention to the matter is necessary.  If so, then we nominate a blue-ribbon panel of experts to conduct a series of videoconferences to discuss the feasiblity of a meeting.  Then comes the environmental impact studies for the meeting, organizing of the community that will host the meeting, sexual harassment seminars to train the pre-meeting organizational staff; a two-week diversity clinic, a two hundred billion dollar fact finding tour of key tropical resorts, and pontificating on assorted network news shows.  After that, we conduct 6 months of polling to determine what the agenda for the meeting is and canvas Congress for earmark requests to grease the wheels for everything.  Then, and only then, do we actually staff our scheduling committee.

It's a simple process, but it is highly nuanced.

President Obama said that North Korea violated international rules when it tested a rocket that could be used for long-range missiles, and he called on the United Nations Security Council to take action.

“This provocation underscores the need for action, not just this afternoon at the Security Council but in our determination to prevent the spread of these weapons,” Mr. Obama said. “Rules must be binding. Violations must be punished. Words must mean something.”

This sounds vaguely familiar.  Let me think....Oh, now I remember.  It's almost exactly what GWB said about Iraq to the UN.  But he was just a wild, dumb, cowboy.

Like you say, we need to strengthen our border fences both North and South PERIOD!

I am glad BHO pointed out the obvious arguement to Europe, that due to various reasons (nearer location, large muslim pops) they are MUCH more in reach of the AQ from Afghan. then the US is. But what did that accomplish tho? The pledge for 5k non-combat troops. After the spain and london bombing, europe went back to sleep.

Really? The whole EU, 400 M strong can only spare 5k folks? See how important this is to them?

The world is a dinner party of freeloaders knowing that Uncle Sam will always pick up the check, well we need to start the gradual shift from Ruth Chris to McDonalds so the rest of these useless fucks starts to reach for their wallets and pony the fuck up when they want their steak dinner! This is human nature.

Assman, thanks for the article. I've stowed it for later reading because I have a pounding fucking headache and I'm treating it with a hair of the dog IYKWIMAITYD.

The gist I got from the article is that NK is on the verge of internal collapse, potentially initiated by a military coup. For some reason, this line bothered me:

Both China and South Korea would suddenly become responsible for the care and feeding of millions of famished refugees streaming across their borders.

So it would be better to keep them under the iron fist of a despotic regime?

Wouldn't the aid be better used by China and SK than to be "diverted" by the private market to the well-to-do in NK?

Now I get what you mean by starving them out.

Assman - that's why they pushed so hard for this launch with there best customers there for the show.  The Iranians probably just gave them millions in advance to deliver God knows how many of these things for them.  That's where I think the danger lies is that they use this as a money maker by selling them to truly crazy people.  Not to say that they are not crazy but I think all of there weapons developement is for cash and power.  The Iranians on the other hand will lob these things right into Israel the first chance they get and line the Norks pockets in the process.

177 The NK's were/are intimately involved with the AQ Khan nuke network.  Then there's the ongoing relationship with Iran. Iran's most advanced ballistic missiles are variants of NK systems.  The Koreans are also major players in the Persian nuclear program.  I seem to recall that a number of NK technicians got whacked in Syria not too long ago.

As for China "hating" the NKs .... Well, that didn't stop them from routinely authorizing air transit rights to the Norks and AQ Khan's boys as aircraft traveled from NK to Pakistan.

Posted by: sears poncho at April 05, 2009 10:06 AM (uj/0b)

182 We don't finish the job, Erik.  We're isolationist at heart.  We could have let Patton push the Russians back at the end of WWII thus preventing the Iron Curtain.  Hell, we could have helped stop the Russian revolution to begin with, and we deliberately didn't.  We could have ended the Russian nuclear program before the "point of no return" in the early 60's. We could have let Macarthur take out the Chinese like he wanted to (including with nukes).  We could have won the Korean and Vietnam wars.  Instead, we let our major adversaries cultivate dangerous client states: Viet Nam, North Korea, Iraq, Syria, Iran (thanks to Carter), etc.

Old Sailor, I need some 'splaining on that one. I'm a moron, after all.

I think Old Sailor is right but it's really the way of the world and not just us thought I wish we wher the exception.  The Gulf is the most recent example of this - we should have finished the job the first time but we bowed to international pressure and pulled up short.  Nobody has the stomach for real war anymore.  Vietnam - need I say more.  Israel has become very good at defending itself just up to the point of winning and then coitus interuptus they turn around and quite.  Hezbollah and Hamas should only be referrd to in past tense but that's not the case.

Think about Hiroshima in modern terms and it is just simply impossible to imagine yet we look back as being completely justified in our actions.  Those days are gone.

185 I have to rush out soon, so I haven't had a lot of time to give this much thought, but it's worked out pretty much as I thought it would. There was a bare chance that the Japanese would have felt sufficiently threatened to take the missile out, but everyone seems to have decided it was best to let it slide. (A decision we will bitterly regret in time, I think.)

As for the collapse of the Norks: it can take an incredibly long time for even a horrible political system to fall. The Western Empire of Rome took about four hundred years to completely "fall", and that's only if you count the sack of Rome by the Vandals as the signature event of the "fall". The Soviet Union, which was never anything more than an atrocious failure, held on for nearly eighty years. Never underestimate the terrible power of inertia, of the status quo. The devil you know is always less frightening than the devil you don't.

The fact is, South Korea is probably the biggest vote against letting the Norks fall. They say the huge expense and political upheaval the re-unification cost Germany after the wall fell; and they know that their own problems would be tenfold as bad. The North Korean populace has been brutalized and suppressed for so long that there is almost no one left living who can really relate to the modern world there. The North Korean people would be almost impossible to assimilate, but would only exist for decades as a permanent underclass: a huge drain on the treasury, a major source for criminality and political upheaval, and a polarizing influence on South Koreans. For many South Koreans, re-integration with the North is a complete non-starter, now or at any time soon. Better to keep the asylum up North running with the inmates safely tucked inside.

188 You could count the Visigoth sack of Rome in 415 rather than the Vandal sack in 455 as the actual "Fall of Rome", but the Vandals did a more thorough job and actually fractured the Roman state beyond retrieval. The Visigoths mainly got drunk and pillaged a bit; the Vandals hung around for a long time, and King Geiseric actually carried off the Empress and her daughters (one of whom was later to marry Geiseric's son).

191 Better to keep the asylum up North running with the inmates safely tucked inside.

The problem is that the inmates are NOT safely tucked inside.  The Norks are shipping fissile material, nuclear engineers, missile experts, and conventional weapons  to our enemies all over the world.  Too bad for the SKs if war breaks out.  They've had a good run with appeasement, but the rabid dog to the north is going to break its leash one day and then all hell will break out.

That's right.  That plus the International community (read UN).  Everybody starts bringing the "can't we just talk about this" pressure and you have to stop.  I think it computes quite easily as much as I hate it.  This is a different day that we live in with bullshit treaties that go largely ignored by some while we are handcuffed by them.  Plus you have this global on the spot biased bleeding heart media showing the public all the brutallity of war that they can not handle (read pussification) and it's game over before the game is really over.

One of the fears that I have for my generation and future generations is that we will not have the stomach for war which will translat into the inability to properly make war.  Actually with obama in office we are officially there.

I made that point earlier as well - this is how they make money and it is how they will continue to fund the truly crazy regimes out there.  It might sound crazy to say but I wonder how truly interested the Norks are in actual war.  I think the resources and land of SK is about the only thing that would make sense for them to go out and get.  Anything else would just cost a lot of money and bring them huge head aches.  So imho there biggest threat is to SK and everything you listed in your post which is really scary.

WASHINGTON – Bailing out the financial sector will cost taxpayers $167 billion more than originally anticipated, according to a Congressional Budget Office estimate.

The CBO raised its projection because yields have increased on securities issued by the bailed-out financial institutions under the $700 billion Troubled Asset Relief Program.

The shooting occurred in a mixed neighborhood of homes and small businesses in the center of Binghamton, a city of about 47,000 located 140 miles northwest of New York City.

At the junction of the Susquehanna and the Chenango rivers, the Binghamton area was the home to Endicott-Johnson shoe company and the birthplace of IBM, which between them employed tens of thousands of workers before the shoe company closed a decade ago and IBM downsized in recent years.

239 I think the Taepong-Do 2 is a three-stage missile.  From what I recall, the NKs immediate problem after the previous launch was how to achieve clean stage separations (the Chinese apparently figured it out after the Hughes-Loral intelligence debacle, which ocurred during the Clinton administration).  Exactly where the Nork payload landed is the key.

240 We are entering an age of Harmonic Convergence. The left believe all will be well when we all believe what Lennon not Lenin wrote.

Imagine there's no countries
It isn't hard to do
Nothing to kill or die for
And no religion too
Imagine all the people
Living life in peace

Evan Sayet made this point and I agree with him. It is a fundamental disconnect with reality and the problem of evil.  They seem to think if we all just embraced Obama and stopped having other allegiances the negatives in the world would all cease to exist.

I grew up in Detroit. No amount of positive feelings on my part stopped a bully from pounding my face into the dirt. It was only when I discovered an alternative use for a brick that he had his epiphany.

Thus you and I are evil to the liberal because we oppose a unity based on nothing other than an human epiphany. Lenin would gladly use Lennon to move humanity toward collectivism. This actually is worse than economic collectivism - they seem to want group think and will not acknowledge anything else.

254 The 2006 Taepodong-2 launch was a failure.  Forty seconds after launch, the missile blew up because the booster and the second stage did not separate cleanly.  At the LINK, you can see that the booster and the second stage of the latest missile separated cleanly.  No word, apparently, on where stage 3 and the payload landed.

The NKs had a successful launch, no matter what "ArmsControlWonk" has to say.

The Taepongdo-2 has an estimated range of 4200 nm.

257 That's fucked up. So we just seal the country off and let them starve to death?

This question makes politicos harrumph and avert their eyes and shuffle their feet like a kid needing to pee, but the answer is ultimately: yeah, pretty much.

The residents of North Korea are, for all intents and purposes, insane. They are completely unable to function in a modern world in any realistic sense: not in China, not in South Korea, nowhere. They'd be impossible to assimilate into any modern economy. And there's approximately 23 million of these poor people up there. 23 million starving, brutalized serfs. No one wants them, not even their own government. Kim Jong Ill spends their lives cheaply because he cares nothing for them, any more than the rest of the world does. They live their lives in vain. It is heart breaking. It is enough to make stones weep.

And yet the wider world does not wish to acknowledge their complicity in allowing 23 million human beings to exist (I won't say "live") this way. Better to keep them penned up, safely away from prying eyes. Better to let Kim run the place as his personal playground than to let these miserable, ragged ghosts loose on the world.

...another thing is, for us to be shooting down missiles in what China sees as its geopolitical 'sphere of influence' would be highly provocative. The Monroe Doctrine says that nothing military happens in the Western Hemisphere, this being our sphere of influence. The Chinese feel the same- the Korean peninsula is in their self-claimed sphere.

Also, 2 American journalists are currently in NORK custody. We're trying to get them back. Granted, they're journalists and should be fed to hungry NORKS- but all kidding aside they are US ciitizens and are also somebody's loved ones. So that's also on the table.

Also, Obama doesn't want to shoot down a NORK rocket because holy crap WHAT IF IT WORKS? Obama wants to scrap missile defense- not prove that it's effective!

Finally, China knows the NORKS are a pain in our ass. They like this and find it very helpful to their plans.

I just thought of something-- Would shooting down the Nork missile actually be to our net advantage?  Consider:

Pro: Demonstrate our ABM works.

Con: Everyone who's paying attention already knows that, more or less.

Pro: Look "tough" to the Norks.

Con: Look like dicks to the rest of the world for shooting down a commo sat. just to prove we could.  My guess is the Aegis ships were there in case KJI suddenly called a press conference to annouce the "satellite" was really a nuke, and its orbit was intended to pass through downtown Honolulu, or something similarly unlikely.

Con: We look bad if we miss, especially since we'd be shooting just to prove we could.

Con: We give the Norks an excuse to fail; they just say, "It would have worked if someone hadn't interfered," even if it wouldn't.  Depending on circumstances, it might be hard to prove one way or the other.

Con: Possible causus belli(?sp) with the Norks.  Do we need another war right now, or would it be better to wait a few more years?

Con: Shooting down the missile does NOTHING to disrupt the technological, industrial and political wherewithal needed to build and shoot more missiles, which is what we'd need to do to actually stop them from building more.  It'd just piss them off (more than they already are).

If we wanted to rattle sabers a little bit, we'd have some more ABM tests in that general area of the world-- maybe against a submarine-launched missile so the Aegis crews wouldn't know when or where it was launching from.  Or we could do them off San Diego-- it doesn't really make much difference.

286 I hear that that Kim Jong-il can forget about the movies Obama was about to give him. No Complete Works of Pauly Shore. 287 Brilliant!

Kim violates the UNSC Resolutions, so Obama urges him to adhere to them?

Tad LATE with that, aren't you, Barry - or isn't the teleprompter loaded yet?

Of course, should the Norks ignore this scary and intimidating statement from Obama, they risk him issuing an even tougher admonition, and perhaps even stomping his foot at them.

The very thought of that should make Kim piss his little Mao suit.

Of course, we still have to reach out to all those moderates in the PRK, nonetheless . . .

289 Players are always fighting in Runescape. It’s one of the reasons the game is so popular, being able to go to another world, attack monsters, and take their treasure . It’s adventure. It’s excitement. It’s fun. Especially through outstanding account.
And one of the best parts about combat (melee combat) is that it is by far the cheapest of all three combat methods.Ranging costs buy runescape gold because it requires the use of arrows. Magic costs even more because it requires lots and lots of runes. But melee combat is relatively cheap. The only and runescape money for sale you must spend is on your weapons and armor. Once you buy those things, you don’t have to keep buying more and more stuff to keep fighting. As you gain levels in Runescape, you will be able to buy better and better equipment. The better you get, the better the weapons and armor you can use, which makes you better able to keep your buy runescape accounts leveling-up.
And while we are getting the basics out of the way, let’s take a second to learn about the world of Runescape. Or rather, the worlds.
