1) Gov Palin is calling for a special election for Begich's senate seat. Awesome!

2) Not so awesome: I posted this in thread below but this is a better place for it:

You see this from ABCNews about the shooter of the 3 slain cops in Pittsburgh?

Friends said he recently had been upset about losing his job and that he feared the Obama administration was poised to ban guns.

Bitter gun-clingers, anyone?

If this shooter is also revealed to be a regular church-goer, the Left is going to milk this tragedy for all they can. Get ready for the manufactured outrage where the Left pretends they care about dead cops.

They're reporting that the police have been called to the house a few times in the past.

9 This is President Obama, on international relations.  It's not as if international politics and realpolitik are complicated subjects or unknown.  It is an embarrassment that an American President is saying such things at the NATO news conference....sigh....imagine if Bush had said this at his first NATO meeting news conference - the media would have destroyed him for being a naive hick.

But Obama couldn’t completely disguise that his first trip abroad as the American president was a bit of an eye-opener. He hinted at this Welcome to The NFL moment in taking an open-ended question from an Austrian reporter at NATO about his impressions so far of the continent.

“It was also interesting to see that political interaction in Europe is not that different from the United States Senate,” he noted. There’s a lot of – I don’t know what the term is in Austrian– wheeling and dealing. And people are pursuing their interests and everybody has their own particular issues and their own particular politics.”

So Palin is going to call for a new election, great, but they still should have a run off first.

And this:

In Assachusetts, you can't get a gun permit if you have any history of domestic violence.

If you have been ordered a restraining order based on domestic violence you can’t have a gun in ANY State. Look up the Lautenberg Amendment.  This was a little bit of bullshit passed when the Dems had both house during the Clinton era and the pussy Republicans did not fight it.

The allies rebuffed U.S. appeals for more combat forces to join the war, but the backing Obama did gain at a European summit allowed him to claim an early victory on the world's foreign policy stage.

NATO allies agreed to send up to 5,000 more military trainers and police to Afghanistan, including forces to help protect candidates and voters at upcoming elections.

Asks for troops and get military trainers and it's hailed as a victory. They could have told him to fuck off in 10 languages and it would have been hailed as a victory.

From the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette:

Friends described a Richard Poplawski far different from the 22-year-old man accused of gunning down three police officers today -- a partier sometimes, a guy in search of an understanding of politics, even a walking comedian.

He was also convinced that the government wanted to take away his guns and his freedom.

"I've known this kid my entire life and he was a good kid. He never had bad intentions. He never spoke about harming anybody," said Edward Perkovic, a lifelong friend who had known Mr. Poplawski since the two paired up at a daycare.

Mr. Poplawski attended Immaculate Conception elementary school and moved on to North Catholic High School. A spokesman for the high school today said that he was expelled, but declined to state a reason.

Mr. Perkovic said his friend stopped attending classes so he could take get his general equivalency diploma then join the Marine Corps.

Records indicate that Mr. Poplawski was dishonorably discharged from the corps during basic training. Friends said he wanted out so he could rejoin his girlfriend.

Sounds like the guy is pretty screwed up. Couldn't hack Catholic school. Couldn't hack the Marines. Not like the left aren't going to associate him closely to both institutions, though. They'll probably go full court on it. I'm sure they were salivating on the first reports that he had been in the military and were dying for an Iraq/Afghanistan post traumatic stress disorder mass killer poster boy.

Just check out the uber-leftist NY Daily News headline for the story:

AP: Fargo resisted FEMA recommendation to evacuate

With floodwaters rising around them, Fargo officials and the Federal Emergency Management Agency faced an agonizing decision: Should they order a mandatory evacuation of the entire city?

FEMA thought the best course of action was to evacuate and not leave anything to chance. Fargo officials disagreed, saying they knew what it would take to hold back the Red River. The conversation turned heated at times, and Fargo ultimately won.

Now that the Red River is receding and leaving only relatively minor damage, that decision looks smart. The city began returning to normal Wednesday as people went back to work, stores reopened and the river dipped to only slightly above 37 feet.

At the height of the flood, Fargo's levees held back most of the deluge, and allowing residents to stay enabled them to fill sandbags, patrol for dike leaks and monitor pumps to keep water out of homes.

But the episode demonstrates the kind of clash that can unfold between federal and local governments in an era when FEMA is intent on avoiding another failure of Hurricane Katrina proportions. It was also perhaps an inevitable result of federal bureaucrats coming head-to-head with the pride of a local community.

In this case, Fargo stood up to the government and won, showing a sturdy resolve that was apparent throughout the flood-fighting effort.

--You suppose loical officials might better understand their capabilities and weaknesses than bureaucrats in Washington?

Amazing things happen when people get off their collective derriere and mobilize, rather than be like those lardasses in the freak news stories that become one with their couches and wait for the governemtn to help them.

The Philly cop-shooting story has a thread on KOS with hundreds of comments. Here's a few from the first page alone (and remember: they think WE'RE nuts):

Beck, Limbaugh, Norris, Savage, Farah, O'Reilly, et al have triggered more violence and destruction than the Dread Terrorists al Quaeda could ever hope to do, and should subsequently be prosecuted for it.

These are the people who believe Obama is a secret muslim terrorist who was born in god-knows-where and won election because Oprah and Saudis funded his campaign

I don't harbor fantasies of home invasions so my shotgun shells are out in the garage, a long way from my gun.

Obama has added more habitat for hunting in 3 months than Bush did in 8 years.

There is no doubt that people in this country have died and will continue to die solely as a result of Republican fearmongering and hyperbole.

There is blood on Rupert Murdock's print stained hands

Another frightening thing is that their kids are all homeschooled, and the reason for it is to make sure that they are taught Xtian values and correct American history (ie, we are a "Christian Nation". The kids are all good little zombie brainwashing victims.

Gun paranoia is instilled in their kids at a very young age.

MY FAVORITE:

The NRA and right-wing media constantly push this meme. It doesn't NEED evidence. In fact, they know it isn't true.

It's just an excuse to stockpile weapons and eventually start killing liberals.

You wait until 2012 when Obama's up for reelection. Expect to see outright TERRORISM in Democratic districts and polling places.

Some of them bug the crap out of me, especially his oft repeated "racist-sexist-bigot-homophobe" phrase, but I know they are in a way mental pauses while he gathers his thoughts for what he's planning on saying next.

59 I know they are in a way mental pauses while he gathers his thoughts for what he's planning on saying next.

Repetition-whether as parallelism, or in phrases called 'formulae' has a great literary and aesthetic effect.  The recurrent familiar ring of the Limabaughic epithet is more than a useful device aiding the poet to compose or the audience to translate a message: it is a humorous and evocative element in Limbaughic poetry, the more so for it repeated recurrence.  The use of repetition in oral poetry is not just a utilitarian tool, but something which lies at the heart of all poetry.  It is one of the main criteria by which we tend to distinguish poetry from prose, in both familiar and unfamiliar cultural traditions.

The 'formulae' are  words or group of words regularly used under given metrical conditions to express a given essential idea. The most often used phrases, lines, or even couplets—those which a singer hears most frequently when he is learning—establish the patterns for the poetry, its characteristic syntactic, rhythmic, metric, and acoustic molds and configurations. In time the individual practitioner of the art can form new phrases—create formulas—by analogy with the old as needed. When he has become proficient in thinking in the traditional patterns, incl. the traditional phrases and everything else like them, he is a full-fledged singer of oral poetry. In essence, he has learned to speak—or to sing—the special language of that poetry. He composes naturally in the forms of his tradition, unconsciously, and often very rapidly, as a native speaker speaks a language.

86 I was watching the network news coverage of the shootings and they were trotting out the number of people killed in mass shootings so far this year and the yearly average and all the other scary statistics they could think of.

I noticed a few things:

1) No comments from gun advocates (i.e. NRA) Only a comment from a professor who gravely warned that as the economy worsens, more people will want some sort of violent revenge and we can expect more shootings. What. The. Fuck.

2) No comparisons of gun deaths to say, deaths in car crashes. I suspect the number of vehicular deaths is significantly higher than the 54/year average they quoted for gun deaths. (A statistic I suspect they pulled out of their ass.)

3) No mention if any of the shooters in the recent mass shootings were allowed to LEGALLY own a gun.

BOHICA, guys. BOHICA.
