My cousin had a kid when she was 18. Had a shotgun wedding, but they divorced a few months later. Five or six years later met another guy, married him, had two more girls, and they are doing pretty well for themselves.  

I was looking at the Facebook page of my second cousin (the child who forced the original shotgun wedding) who is now a freshman in college, and I saw that she took her step-father's last name, instead of her biological father. He apparently never took much of an interest in her after the first year or so.

Hopefully in a few years, Bristol's child will be taking her step-father's last name too.

A lot depends on the law of the State and the judge holding the hearing.  In most cases family court judges will always side with the woman and they say they do this for the child’s benefit. I have seen men ordered to make payments larger than their take home pay and when they bitched about the judge told them to get a second job!

 

I have also seen the other side of the coin where the men have successfully avoided making any payments but that is becoming rarer. Most of the time it is because the mother doesn’t want them around. That being the case, if the mother doesn’t want them around and the man WANTS to come around he can get the court to order the mother to provide visitation.

 

As for the poster who said that college is NOT required and “its over at 18”, that is NOT true, or at least its not true in some cases. It all depends on what the court determines. Most cases settled now include the possibility of 4 extra years for college. I know one person who actually had that written in his court order for child support.  

 

As I said in my original post, this turd IS going to find out about life the hard way.

It took me one evening around my father-in-law, after my husband and he reconciled, to realize that my husband would have been an absolute slob (in so many different ways) had he been raised by that man. My nephew's father is not a stable individual. I don't think he's held down a job for more than a year. Tripp will have a terrible time without a father, but he may be better off without Levi.

242 I got most of the way through this thread, and had to fast forward.  As a father of a 21 year old girl, I had "the talk" with my daughter when she was 13.  And 14.  And 15, etc.  In the beginning, quite basic.  As she got older,  I was a bit more descriptive.  She was free to do as she pleased.  As such, so was I.  She always was supervised in some fashion.  She did very much understand that this was because her mother and I  "cared"  and someday,  God will bless her with some Man who will do the same.  That being said,  I take great pride in being known as Psycho-Daddy.  I remember her first date.  It was a double date and I walked out to the car before they dispatched for the evening.  I asked the driver (her date) who was sitting next to him.  He said my daughter's name.  I corrected him immediately.  I said, you have sitting next to you the most important thing in the world to me (you should have seen her eyes light up just then, it was truly a Kodak moment).  I explained that she will be home by midnight, and should there be any issues, she does have a cell phone and should call me.  I also explained that if he is late a few minutes not to drive at an unsafe speed.  Just call me and all is ok.   I cannot fathom what occurred in the Palin family, nor is it any of my business.  All I know is keep the youngin's very very busy, and supervised ALL the time, and keep this stuff from happening in the first place.  Oh yes, I made damn sure all the parents had our phone number and could/should call 24/7 to check on THEIR little darlings as well.  Many times children think their parents are stupid.  With modern technology at our desposal , it is our responsibility as parents to prove them wrong.
