Psych Starts Again Tonight
Whoops, No It Doesn't

Just a head's up in case you don't know. They have an odd split-season schedule. It's at 10 on USA.

The premise is that the slacker hero pretends to be psychic and consults with the police to solve crimes. In fact, he just has a few oddball skills such as a photographic memory and sharp power of observation, but he pretends he's using psychic powers because, well... he just sort of enjoys lying to people. It's his hobby. He's the kind of guy, who I kind of know in real life, who would rather make money via a scam, even if he could make the same amount of money with less effort working honestly. (Actually, I think I'm like that, now that I think of it.)

This show has grown on me a lot. I used to think it was annoying and both tried too hard (to be cute) and tried too little (to construct any kind of plausible mystery).

What I've come to appreciate about the show is that it's slapdash and loose-limbed. It feels like they wrote it the night before without troubling themselves too much about it. And the sets are often laughably, Ed-Wood-level amateurish.

And yet, despite the apparent lack of any effort whatsoever, it's pretty enjoyable. The show, like the main character, is just coasting amiably by with as little effort possible.

And every once in a while it's funny. But even when it's not funny ha-ha, it's funny amusing.

Anyway, if you haven't seen it and have nothing to watch at 10, give it a shot.

Whoops: Apparently I'm wrong. Last night my DVR told me a new episode was being recorded tonight, but I don't see it now.

Damn, I'm sorry. I was just getting psyched about it coming on.

Here's a funny 80s video spoof ad for the show.

Monty didn't seem to like the credits clip.

1 Nice, something to replace Battlestar.

2 As long as they don't take all of their technology and fly it into the sun and attempt to exist on gathering bugs and berries in their series finale, I'll watch it.

3 psych is good fun. You have to listen carefully to the quick banter of the main guy to get some of the better quips.

6 Anyone see the South Park episode "Eat, Pray, Queef" yet?  That and "The Coon" are two of the funniest ever --a strong season so far!

10 Um, I don't mean to be a dick, but are you sure about this?  I prefer to get my TV shows (including "Psych") via other means, so if there was a commercial about this I would have missed it.  But Psych's website seems to make it pretty clear that new episodes start in the summer.

11 I just watched a House rerun on USA from 10 to 11 EST.

Posted by: Mycroft at April 03, 2009 10:08 PM (7npTU)

12 The Premise is that he's a slacker, and hated the discipline of being a real detective because he has daddy issues, so he deliberately lived a life that would exclude him from becoming a detective.  He would have been a patrol flatfoot and that wasn't what he was interested in, nor was he interested in being a detective, but he couldn't ignore the skills he developed as a child thanks to the overbearing guidance of his father allowing him to develop a "photographic memory" (that part I don't like, in the first season it wasn't that he had a photographic memory, but he recognized that usually secondary and tertiary evidence is likely the direct path towards solving a complex case, and he made a point of knowing it.)

He see's simple, non-solid data and lacking the power to investigate further on his own, he combines intuitive understanding, and manipulates others to understanding his investigative method since he himself is powerless to express it himself, since in the very first episode he was detained for murder, and he didn't want to give credit to his father, or draw attention to himself for the investigation, so instead of being the talented investigator that he is, he manipulated outcomes by having others do the grunt work.

The Show starts with him making out with a chick while watching an arrest of a murderer, and he calls into the police the vital info to find the real murder.

He's a slacker, he's a brilliant investigator, and they have turned a talent into an innate ability rather than an ingrained one, and he works to hide it for the reasons that he has daddy issues, hates discipline and doesn't wanna have to do a job that he's bad at, so he lies and manipulates so that he can do something that he is good at, rather than working his way up through tasks he isn't good at.

It's more "secret of my success" than a happy go lucky form of "a beautiful mind."

13 Okay Ace, you got me all excited for NOTHING. New episodes don't start until the summer.

This is one of my favorite shows, gives me the tingly feelings the One give to Chrissy Matthews. It is stupid funny, not really a mystery show. Kind of like a grown up version of Scooby Doo. Shawn & Gus' relationship makes the show.

16 I dunno. Idiosyncratic television shows have their place, but Twin Peaks scratched that particular itch for me once and for all. You can't out-weird David Lynch, folks. Can't be done.

Battlestar Galactica had incredible promise during the first season, but it just progressively got less coherent as the series went along. It really suffered from schizophrenic writing. Firefly just never hit it off with me; I never understood the passion it generated in some people.

I think the absolute best television series in the past ten years has been two HBO series: Carnivale and The Wire. Absolute masterpieces, in my opinion -- TV doesn't get any better than that. Rome was good too, but the second season was nowhere near as good as the first.

And animated comedy produced two of my favorite shows: King of the Hill and Futurama. (The Futurama movies have their moments, but the writing is pretty flaccid compared to the series.)

17 I have checked my cable guide and I cannot see Psych on it. Now I am sad. I was turned on to the show about 5 episodes ago and I am hooked. I love how he always introduces his side-kick by a different name.

24 My wife loves it.  (I think she identifies with Gus and how put-on he is yet he continues.)  I tolerate it.  It's cute, but aimed at relationships rather than plots or storylines or whatever.  That's fine, but it calls for a lot of contortions in the writing.

I am getting less and less fond of Monk as it gets further and further away from Monk's crime-solving ability and more and more into his nuttiness.  Originally, Monk's OCD problems were central to solving some interesting crimes.  Now, the crimes are an incidental hook on which to hang observations of Monk's nuttiness.

I'm still enjoying "The Closer" even though it's also wandering of into relationship land.

--No love for Deawood?  I am just going through the series on DVD and it is Teh Awesome.  I just saw the classic Mr. Wu "Two white cocksuckas!" episode.

My favorite all-time network show: Homicide.  Anyone here watch Sarah Connor Chronicles?  I've become hooked on that as well, and on next week's show will be (supposedly) a kick-ass trailer for the next Terminator flick.

(For giving us the Terminator franchise, I still forgive James Cameron for Titanic.)

29 firefly had 3 hottie regulars, whom have all become sci-fi regulars.  and a 4th, the hot redhead, who shows up late in the show.  its a campy-fun sci-fi western.

30 Still like bones.  hate house, never got into fringe, never liked the cbs procedurals (whatever the spelling is.)

SouthPark is GENIUS, Futurama is very solid, tired of the simpsons, family guy's first season was very exciting only cuz it was wrong, but the method was lazy, all of them are enjoyable, but matt and trey are brilliant.

As for Firefly, It's one of those things that you can't put your finger on, at least for me, but it was excellent, and it was more about character interaction in a contradictory environment, spaceships that require horses and 4 wheelers to drop shit off, while your captain wears chaps and tells your pilot to cut the level of life support to minimum, allowing for a near infinate number of variations based upon the internal contradictions.

One episode mal is in a sword fight, 3 later, he's being shot at with lazers, the 2 before that, he's being attacked with space ships carrying nukes, and then being shanghaied and tractored into a space station where he and his pilot get tortured.

The first episode (the pilot) has them stealing food from an abandoned space station, while the pilot is playing with plastic dinosaurs as his wife is floating free in space hoping she doesn't die while carrying booty, cuz she's the tough one, only to land on a desolate planet, and selling the booty to assholes who double cross them while sitting on horses, cuz the booty was food.

Firefly was a brilliant premise that was perfectly suited for every genre, thats why I liked firefly.

I lost track.

31 Carnivale agree completely, though the final 3 episodes pissed me off.

The creator said he had a 5 year lay out for the series after the success of the first season, but after the . . .was it third or fourth season? . . . got cancelled he said he was happy with how it ended.

He said it was straczyski like in his layout, but the way the series ended was totaly flawed.

My bro and I both liked the series, and bro just said "well, I guess thats enough" or something like that, but I was PISSED!  and anyone who watched carnivale can give you many many reasons.

For instance, MY biggest problem with carnivale is "why does the white healer use the same methods as the dark healer?"  and next was "what good is the boon if it is fallible?"

Not to mention all of the false leads that define Scudder?

33 I want to like Psych more than I actually do.  It's often got clever banter, but the plots are usually not terribly compelling, so it's primarily a background show.

There is this show called Lies or something, with Tim Roth...

The premise is that he and some other people work at some lie detecting outfit, and they all can spot people lying, they're called in by the cops and shit, to solve crimes. Last week or the week before, they had a Big Pharma scandal, of course they had to get the FDA involved. The FDA! The fucking show acted as if it was THE FDA and they solve crimes for the betterment of mankind.

Kinda nauseous bullshit...

There is a collage that is shown every episode that's hanging on the wall.

It has politicians...

Guess how many are Republicans.

All of them. Maybe Billy Jeff is on there, they just show Cheney, McCain, Bush.

Of course.

38 Rev - its Lie To Me.  I know Bubba was used - for lying.  I recall Obama being used (I think it was the middle finger thing).  I've seen Dems used several times for the tell-tale microexpression traits.  I recall R's being used for things like contempt (towards the media).  the big pharma was a take-off of the vioxx/merck stuff; while I am certainly not anti-bigbiz, I have no problem with a company being excoriated for being run by douchbags.  fox tv usually does a decent job at keeping things somewhat balanced if there is anything political in it.

WP - thanks for the name.  I forget it, felt too lazy to imdb it (or look at my firefly copy) but then I figured "hot redhead" was sufficient.

Bones...ugh.  Not a big fan of it, but the one guy playing the left-wing scientist (and trust fund baby) relays the true spirit of moonbatism.

I also saw part of a episode (probably a rerun, I'm not sure) that had an environmental theme to it.  Aforementioned trust-fund baby says that he has solar panels on his house, but feels guilty about using paper napkins.  I guess the fact this character works in a science lab that uses dozens of noxious chemicals, has multiple computers on 24/7, and transports only a few bodies at a time by plane or car is supposed to be lost on the audience.

41 Limited time for tv for me, so I watch:

Breaking Bad. 'Nuff said.

Kings. NBC Sun. night. Appears to be a modern-day adaptation (albeit a loose one) of the life of King David. Takes place in a country calle Gilboa with it's capital city Shiloh. I'm interested where this series goes.

42 Mitt Hodgens isn't that bad.  Hodgens is a knowitall, not a cocky prick, and it took the end of the 3rd season for his character to come out as a trust funder.

Not to mention his continuing attatchment to Angela.

Being "rich" was only a plot point for the Angela conflict.

Also, he's not there to be a wack job (though he gets away with it cuz he's rich and doesn't care) he's there to be someone who lives up the D'Anconia'n ideal of earning value.

"4 doctorates, and still studying, can you please call me doctor?"  when Cam first came on the scene.

Not to mention, you are bitching about hodgens when there was that whole fucking hologram shit, thank goodness they got rid of that.

I like Monk.  Psych I didn't like at first, seemed a little too cynical/sarcastic, but it sure did grow on me.  I like to have it on Saturday mornings while I clean.  It makes me grin.  Burn Notice is wonderful.  I'm considering buying the DVDs so I can watch it all the time.

I find television shows boring, but I am curious about the new special CBS series Harper Island.  It is supposed to be a mystery but the commercials make it seem like a low-end serial killer/slasher flick.  But I love mysteries, and this has the potential to suck completely or end with a great (but honest) surprise.  I mean if the killer ends up being someone not introduced early in the series, some random psycho, that would not be good.  But if the clues are presented and it truly is one of the people we will watch week to week, that sounds like fun.  I like trying to guess and figure it out.  I hope it will be more like an Agatha Christie mystery (smart and clever) and not some cheesey soap opera.

45 I like Bones, but I was a fan of her books, so I went in hoping I'd like it.  She's a little off, but what I love is her and him together.  He keeps her "human" so to speak.  He's a good catholic, good father, good man.  And I like that.  They work well together.  Plus, I really do like the books, they are very involved, so I get a kick from the show.  But WP you are so right, I'm glad that they toned down the hologram.  That was a little much.

46 Jimmy Fallon sucks,

He was only funny on SNL cuz he lost it live, you FELT for him, and you laughed cuz you felt like him as he laughed, not cuz he was actually funny, but cuz, you can put yourself there and laugh.

He's not a comic, or a set-up, he's the guy who offers the audience allowence to laugh.

If you've ever been to a SitCom filming as an audience member, you are prompted constantly to laugh, so that you get used to laughing on queue.

The set up's aren't all that funny, they are funny enough, they include the audience so that you, as the audience are invested in laughing, if you don't laugh for the show, then why did you laugh for the amateurs?

It's like a used car salesman saying, "I can tell you like this car, don't tell me, but I can tell you she rides a prom queen am I right?"

and you want to be polite, so you say "yeah,"

"this might not be your dream car, but she will treat you good, I can tell you that, and that's the truth, right?"

and you want to be polite, and while he is largely wrong in many ways, he's right in one way you say "right."

"You like this one but you don't know if you can afford it?  Don't worry, I can you get you in this baby in no time flat, you will be driving off this lot in no time, let me get everything ready."

"I don't know. . ."

"brother? by your eyes, I know, want to go for a ride?"

"I don't know"

"well, I will leave you alone to shop, don't worry, no pressure, I will leave you to look around."

then the salesman goes off and gets the keys for the first car, and a couple of shitty cars, and comes back.

"made up your mind?"

"I'm still thinking."

"Well, in the mean time, lets take that first one for a ride while you think."

"okay."

"don't worry, just a joyride while you think about what you want, we'll take others in your price range for a turn after, how about that?  I'll be right back."

47 LR,

Boreanaz is well prepared for the sexual tension based on his buffy and Angel experience, and I actually think he's a good actor.

A couple of us at the hostages (back when I ran the hostages) decided that he would likely be one of the best choices for the Captain America movie as Cappy, at least as far as recognizable actors who can represent America.

I SWEAR TO GOD I haven't seen him age since his first appearence on buffy.

There are a lot of shows with a lot of promise but they burn out fast.

Bones made 4, and I still like it.

I burned out on "The Shield" after 2 seasons, "The closer" in 2 seasons, "Medium" (yes I have a soft side) in one, "rescue me" took 3, most of the others I was tired of almost immediately.

"Arrested Development?"  FUCKING PLEASE!!!  It was a hackneyed attempt at a sitcom, and I'm sorry, voice overs is a pathetic method, I fucking HATE voiceovers, if you use voiceovers, it means you are too lazy to actually write a script, and favor a monologue, Ron Howard doesn't impress me.

Well, all I can say is the SNL parody of Governor Paterson is not that far off:

"And now here in Binghamton we probably have the worst tragedy and senseless crime in the history of this state. When are we going to be able to curb the kind of violence that is so fraught and so rapid that we can’t even keep track of the incidents?"

This latest shooting in Binghamton was bad, but the worst tragedy in the history of New York?

50 Well Joe,

If NY allowed for people to bear arms as that tissue paper document requires, this likely wouldn't have happened, because he wouldn't have had the balls to do it if the society were allowed to arm themselves.

CNN, "the most trusted name in news."  today said "It is unsure of what the assailant was wielding, but he was most commonly defined as carrying two weapons, one a 9 millimeter and a 45 millimeter (thats not a typo) pistol, and later when questioned as to if they were 'automatic or semi-automatic' weapons the spokesman said 'I don't know'"

Well I know.

First! I can say this, the reporters don't know a fucking thing about guns.

I did not typo when I said the CNN correspondent called it a 45 millimeter gun.  That is not a typo, And NOONE said in the anchor's ear "there is no such thing as a 45 millimeter gun."  it was a fourty five CALIBER gun, but hey, I guess their layers of editing and fact checking must have been layed off so they could pay for maureen dowds bad and inacurate references to pop culture.

I HATE violence, and I have in my life, only fired about Other than military, about 10 types of guns (3 rifles the rest pistols, and ONE shotgun) but I'm not retarded enough to confuse diameter with caliber, these "military reporters" say there is a 45 millimeter gun?

I fucking hate them, I really fucking hate them, just like 5 years ago when the "SAW" was a "VERY Heavy Machine gun."  Yeah, VERY Heavy, if you are too big a pussy to pick up a watermelon, or is that racist?

Wicked - I think that Boreanaz is great.  He seems very down to earth and just a good guy.  And I love his character on Bones.  He's patriotic, tough, smart, physical, and very masculine and you just don't see that much any more.  It just a breath of fresh air because he's a real man.  Love it.

I get bored so quickly with most of TV, I'd rather read.  TV just doesn't challenge me or engage me.  I never saw Shield or Rescue Me, stopped watching shows like ER after one season.  I could not make it 30 minutes with Grey's Ana.  Hate shows like that and I'm a girl.  Soapy, cheesey.  Yuck.  I like mysteries and smart shows, clever shows.  There just aren't many made that will hold my interest. But I like Bones, Monk, Psych, Burn Notice, Medium once in a while.  I sort of lost interest in Medium when the husbad left his aerotech job.  But I still catch it every once in a while.  I think Medium's best show was the art thiefs/murders, where the daughter saw the murders in her dreams as cartoon monkeys.  Great episode.

Now, I am interested in HBO's True Blood, simply because I've read those books and love them.  I don't have HBO, but I plan on netflixing it.  I would also like to watch their No. 1 Ladies Detective Agency, as I've read those books and really liked them (very different).

I kind of like Criminal Minds, but sometimes its a stretch.  I'm sort of interested in the Mentalist, but again some of the shows fall flat.  But it can be interesting.

as for judgment, that is optional, I tend to be a very stern critic on those things I know while admiting my ignorance on those things I don't.

Thank you very much for the compliment LR.

54 OH!

Sorry LR, I left this out. . . .

Captain America, as a Movie has already been greenlighted by Marvel.

I said that there are three requirements for the person who plays Captain America.

1)  MUST BE FIT

After all Cappy did take super serum.

2)  MUST BE WHITE

Not a racial thing, but you can't deconstruct CAPTAIN AMERICA! even though I know hollowood wants to turn him into a turban wearing jew who visits the kaba every year while still saluting a dysphoric representation of the American flag, and fighting against evil American corporations that waiste oil when green energy is so easily available. . . .  But that is NOT What Cappy does.

3) The person who plays cappy MUST be American, AND must be a relative noone so that he can be identified as cappy.

Thats why I like borreanaz, it might damages "bones" but I don't think bones has more than 1 or 2 seasons, and it would actually work to Bones's favor to have them fade with boreanaz leading the way, Also, maybe there is room for tempy being "wonderwoman" or "psyloche" in other flicks.

Just saying.

55 Don't know if this thread is dead or not, but...

Carnivale ended (was cancelled) after two seasons, and Daniel Knauf tried to put a good face on it and say "they told the story they wanted to tell". But it's pretty clear that the last couple of episodes were hastily cobbled together to bring some kind of resolution to the story. And there were still all kinds of threads -- both plot-wise and character-wise -- left hanging. Still, it was an amazing series and I'm glad HBO stuck with it as long as they did.

The Wire, though, is an absolutely incredible series. Five seasons of absolute gold. If you like cop dramas (and that really understates what this show is all about), it just doesn't get any better.

HBO's success in the long-running format is what makes me wish they'd produce Atlas Shrugged. I think they could do it justice in a way a theatrical release couldn't.

58 Well if you like the idea of Psych, but want it played straight as a police procedural, then there's always The Mentalist on CBS.

59 Psych is surprisingly enjoyable. My whole family likes watching it, and Maggie Lawson keeps getting more lovable every episode.

60 I've been enjoying Psych since it hit the air. Good replacement for the pilot's Juliet.

It's fun TV. Doesn't take itself seriously and is good for some laughs. What's wrong with that?

Posted by: physics geek at April 04, 2009 12:21 PM (6fSih)

61 Second pysch, its a good show with no need to watch every single minute of every single episode as not to be confused. However,  the best NBC/USA show is Life with that british dude playing a LAPD detective who was falsely imprisoned for 12 years.. Chill music, zen and loads of ass kicking amoral violence. Too bad nobody watches it.

Posted by: NoDakDrunkhobos at April 04, 2009 01:14 PM (SdCRD)

62 The last episode of the "winter" season was the best psych episode ever.  Finding the stalker bomber and it being Ally Sheedy and her even weirder characther than The Breakfast Club was great.

I love Lassiter on Psych--his self absorption and social ineptitude make him strangely endearing.  My husband was a little put off when The Mentalist began this year--"hey they're copying Psych!"  The best show on USA is absolutely Burn Notice--I'm right there with you, Joanna!  Bruce Campbell is the awesomest best!  This is the last year of Monk (which really has run its course).  Also, the South Park Episode about the financial crisis was pretty good--I've seen those 400 dollar Margaritaville blenders and wondered who on earth would make such a foolish purchase, now I know--Randy Marsh.  Randy also did an outstanding job demonstrating the various genres of farting on the "Queef" episode.  The best South Park Episode evah, is "The Toyota Pious" one!
