Friends in High Places: Judge Allows Obama's Illegal Aunt to Remain in Country Until at Least 2010

A nation of men, not laws. I'm glad we finally got that one right.

Zeituni Onyango, the Kenyan aunt of President Obama, emerged this morning after a brief, closed-door hearing in US Immigration Court in Boston and smiled broadly.

"Praise God," Onyango said softly, holding her head high as she was surrounded by a throng of men in suits.

Judge Leonard I. Shapiro continued Onyango's case until Feb. 4, 2010, which allowed her to stay in the United States until at least that date, according to Fatimah Mateen, a spokesperson for the court. At the initial appearance, the judge explained the deportation charges against Onyango and detailed her rights. Mateen briefed reporters in the lobby of the courtroom, standing beneath a framed photograph of Onyango's nephew, President Obama.

"Ms. Onyango's case is being treated just like any other case before an immigration judge," Mateen said.

Onyango plans to apply for permanent residency in the United States, according to Mike Rogers, a spokesman for Onyango's lawyers, whose legal strategy remains unclear.

"The decision as to Ms. Onyango's request to stay permanently in the United States will be made during a second hearing," Rogers said.

JackStraw says to read the comments, which are harder-edged than one might expect in the Boston Globe. But, of course, everything on the internet is national, and one can imagine that rightwing blogs are highlighting this while Gleen Grenwald, Defender of the Constitution, is entirely silent.

Still, here's a representative comment:

Obama stayed out of the case huh?

Two other hearings she was ordered deported....this time all of a sudden the rules changed?

Laws are for little people who don't know any big people.

JackStraw says that Obama's popularity won't last long. I don't know if he'll ever become decidedly unpopular -- he has 46% who will sing his praises even if he accidentally blows up the earth. But I can see his job approval sinking down to that danger-zone 50% level.

How far can you coast on charm? I hope not very far. But alas far enough to get you into a position of enormous responsibility.

Speaking of things that seemed crazy-funny at the time but now seem pretty meh.

3 Requesting asylum means she has to present evidence of a likelihood of being mis-treated.  Does anyone think that the government of Kenya, which has both hands out to the US for aid, is going to let any harm befall the President of the United States' beloved auntie?  Any asylum claim is laughable on its face.

5 Ms. Onyango can stay with us until comprehensive amnesty passes. Barney Frank, Chris Dodd, and Maxine Waters will be ordering Century 21 to find us foreclosed houses, plus we'll have walk-around grant monies soon. Won't be a burden at all.

7 What bothers me more is not the idea that this is special treatment, but precisely the opposite, i.e., that this really IS typical.  From my limited understanding, actually deporting someone who's here illegally and makes any effort to contest it is ridiculously difficult.

29 It is CRIMINALLY difficult for good people to immigrate legally to the US. I used to work for a research and engineering company and we were always critically short of staff because they couldn't import enough of the specialists they needed.

I say, let every blessed one of the PhDs who want to move here do so. When we threw open the doors to them (we've done it in the past) the total was less than 200K, I think.

Compare that to twenty million illiterate lettuce pickers and tell me which you'd rather have...

I agree with Jack. The Democratic base is extremely impatient and spiteful. They're not happy with just winning, they want to see blood. Provided constant disasters, Obama's going to get old quick. Particularly when they find themselves forced to carry water for him on two largely stagnated (at best) wars, and other continuations of Bush's policies. They'll come a point where even the press turns into their usual jackal selves (see LBJ and Carter).

Yea, I see this kind of thing as something that is really going to undermine Obama's support. It was easier in a full employment economy for the moonbats to be magnanimous about illegal immigration. But when jobs are scarce and people are hurting and this becomes the rule of law, I think people on his team are going to start getting pissed. It's always the economy, stupid.

Did anyone read the comments? It was overall refreshingly pro-immigration enforcement.

There was one comment that stated: "over 100 comments and all negative. i hope she doesn't get attacked."

Au contraire, I think most lefties would prefer that.

They wanted Muslims to be set upon and beaten after 9/11.

They wanted Blacks to be harassed after Obama's election, and for race riots to break out.

They want abortionists to be murdered by kooks.

They want illegal immigrants to be mobbed.

They crave shit like that, because they know their beliefs have no logical consistency (save raw will to power), and that therefore emotional impetus and discord is needed to ramrod their agenda.

I honestly believe that when America (in the examples above and more) comes through as a civilized, cool-headed country they are disappointed, for numerous reasons.

89 "Ms. Onyango's case is being treated just like any other case before an immigration judge," Mateen said.

Mateen, YOU ARE FULL OF SHIT!  I've a friend who worked in immigration for 30 years, specializing in claims of  'political persecution' and requests for 'asylum'.  He says such a case should take no more that 3 months.  Matter of fact, "auntie" should have already had her final deportation hearing.

That fucker spammed the Letterman thread with his moonspeak too.  The site is called Happy Racks.  Any normal person would assume that a site called Happy Racks would be about tits, but sadly there were no tits.  It's industrial shelving and shit like that.

My daughter interviewed for an admin job with some company I had never heard of but declined the position. A couple of days later I inquired about the company and she said "They make lace wigs".

"What?!"

"They make some sort of real hair wigs they call 'lace wigs'"

I begged her for their email address. BEGGED.

She claimed not to have it.
