Justice Department to Drop All Charges Against Former Alaskan Senator Stevens

...owing to prosecutorial misconduct, long alleged by Stevens, and apparently accurately.

I assume Stevens is corrupt. I assume he probably should have been evicted from Congress.

But what the hell were these prosecutors doing bringing a case like this before an election?

This is old news. AP has a new story on Sarah Palin's wardrobe. How fresh. How topical. It's the story that will never die for Pravda.

WASHINGTON – The husband of Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin says the Republican Party's lavish spending on her wardrobe during the presidential campaign was "out of our control."

In the May issue of Men's Journal, Todd Palin was asked about the more than $150,000 that the Republican National Committee spent on clothes, accessories and beauty services for the GOP vice presidential nominee. He defended his wife, saying she was focused on preparation for her debate with Joe Biden.

Sarah Palin and Republican presidential nominee John McCain faced a storm of criticism over the tens of thousands of dollars spent at high-end stores to dress the Alaska governor and her family. Some of the purchases included a $75,062 shopping spree at Neiman Marcus in Minneapolis, one for $49,425 from Saks Fifth Avenue and $4,902 at Atelier, a stylish men's store.

The buys were a stark contrast to Sarah Palin's image as a "hockey mom" who calls herself part of an average, middle-class American family.

Anything on Biden's coke snorting daughter yet?

I have no problem at all with Ted Stevens. I really don't.

Or with Larry Craig or Mark Foley or Tom Delay.

The only thing that pissed me off about Stevens was he didn't drop out of the race and make room for another Republican. But all of those afforementioned men should've said a big Fuck You to the media and the Democrats and went about doing their business.

Compared to Barbara Lee, Barabara Boxer, Maxine Waters, Nancy Pelosi, Barney Frank, Ted Kennedy, and Chris Dodd, those guys are saints.

17 One of the things that apparently only I can see.

The Republican Party in Alaska is as corrupt as anybody else is.

I don't know if the prosecutors are Dem. or Rep.--I am sure that they are as corrupt as anybody else.

I don't know why they went after Stephens (he forgot to pay somebody off is as good an explanation as any other).  I don't really care.

The important point is Palin is not one of them--she is Governor inspite of their best efforts, before, during, and since.

She is a conservative and we need her out of there and in the national goverment.

If we still have one next week.

30   Everyone is assuming Stevens is corrupt.  Why?  This was obviously a political move by the Democrats, but if he was corrupt, they would have done better, yes?  A little bit dirty?  They had to commit fraud to bring this to court, because they could not find anything to hit him with, and he's corrupt?

The article reveals next to nothing.  Indicating Dept of Justice abuse it details zero.  More revealing is the fact that iof the conduct was an outrage why was nothing done against the prosecution?

Finally the article states the judge acted on information from the prosection, duh.  So the judge didn't exercise poor judgement and shouldn't be on the bench?

From my stand point this is just another proof that in the corrupt club of Washington no crime will be punished.  No misconduct is ever too bad if you have the right friends.  And the goivernment will always do as it pleases.

33 It sounds to me that Stevens was innocent.  If the government is dropping charges because of misconduct they 1) didn't have a case and 2) made up or withheld evidence because they wanted a conviction anyway.   I haven't read the article but I can assume that NPR made it sound like he was guilty and got away with it.

He's a member of the club. And he'll always have more common interests with other members than he would with any of us, party affiliation be damned.

I'm with you--always start by remembering this and then look to politics, not the other way around.

39 Look, Stevens was a politician for 40 fucking years. The chances that he never dipped his beak in all that time are infintesimal.

Having said that, I hope lefties are fucking apoplectic about him walking. After all, that's the same reason Bill Ayers never got prosecuted for his treasonous bullshit.

Posted by: Empire of Jeff at April 01, 2009 05:12 PM (xGIqT)

40 Ace, there's probably no way to change your mind about the Senator.  You have, and always will, call him corrupt.  He isn't.  I know him personally, have worked on his campaigns, and he will always have my respect.  I was overjoyed by the news that the charges are being dropped.

Now you can all piss on my comments, but the truth is that he was wrongly and unjustly convicted.  He did not deserve the hell he has endured for the last several years.  Now we have a total idiot Obama-puppet in office in place of the man who served us honorably for 40 years.

Posted by: Minimally Competent Chimpanzee at April 01, 2009 05:28 PM (iafWn)

42 Not to sound like a lefty troll or completely naive, but he was prosecuted by the Bush Justice Department.  If career Justice Department employees made a decision to prosecute that was politically motivated, why didn't the Republican AG squash it?  I'm asking seriously, not rhetorically.  Gabe?

Posted by: JeffK at April 01, 2009 05:40 PM (6u+2c)

43 ...wrongly and unjustly convicted.

Yes, he was. But that doesn't mean he was innocent. It means that the process used was tainted by misconduct on the government's part. Not that he didn't act illegally.

Posted by: XBradTC at April 01, 2009 05:44 PM (O/ZCT)

44 When all the wheat is separated out, Stevens got a couple of relatively small items - a gas grill, a painting, a Brookstone recliner, part interest in a car. That's it.

He should have been forced to report these items as income/unreported gifts, paid the related fines and moved on.

Instead, the DOJ carried out a systematic campaign to convict him at any cost. They hid evidence, conspired to coach witnesses, hid other witnesses, failed to disclose testimony. An FBI agent was rumored to be sleeping with the star witness and certainly was too close to him and the whole thing was trumped up and a perfect example of runaway prosecution.

Somebody should lose their job over this deal and the judge needs to explain why he didn't toss the case months ago when these practices were brought to his attention.

Stevens is arrogant and abrasive and _possibly_ guilty of some ethical violations. But. He was a valued public servant for 40 years and a tireless advocate for his people. He didn't deserve to be railroaded this way. Nobody does.

55 I do have to say, I was always amazed at how fast conservatives were in assuming leftist accusations of corruption were true.

I think there's this prediliction among conservatives toward eating our own, like it buys us Frumian "moderate" credentials.  I wish we'd consider the source more often.  And no, "it was the Bush Justice Department" doesn't count.  If anything, Bush's Justice Department was absolutely political - against conservatives.  It is a demonstration of the infinity of leftist chutzpah that when he tried to fire some of the more flagrantly political hacks working against him and deciding cases based on politics, they accused -Bush- of politicizing the department.  Pretty phenomenal.

Its a shame there are so many mobies trying to change the discussion.  Lawyers are so corrupt its a joke.  The judicial system is the essence of what lawyers are.  Justice doesn't enter into this.  If Stevens was guilty why was he not convicted.  If he was railroaded why is there no investigation into this mal;feanse?

Remember Ramos and Campion?   Stevens is part of the club he has the goods on the other rats like Reid, Dodd, Kennedy.  Folsom has a better class of people than the Senate.

Can anyone name three Senator's who are poorer today than when they entered the Senate?  Can anyone name a Senator who wasn't a millionaire when he entered the senate and isn't a multiumillionaire today?

This country needs a revolution.
