| Today's Must-Read: Obama and the UAWYou've got to give this to Obama, he stays bought: The GM bailout has become a political operation run out of the White House. It will stay that way. Talk of UAW layoffs already disguises the fact that UAW workers are actually offered generous buyouts and early retirement -- they aren't just sent away with a last paycheck. What about Chrysler? A few weeks ago, Fiat was saying it would consider a merger if a loan from Washington was guaranteed. Now Washington is saying a loan will be forthcoming as long as Fiat does a deal. That's not an ultimatum -- that's a nod and a wink.Worth your time. After reading, consider this: the same administration who is willing to spend federal money backing GM warranties wanted to make wounded veterans pay for their own care. Priorities. When GM tanks over the next 3 years, there better be a media campaign by the RNC to associate the company's failure with the Obama administration since they took such a direct hand in the situation.

This incestuous relationship between the Obamaites and labor is of great concern. If Obama can consolidate and expand the labor movement and create a massive voting block of willing idiots, conservatives will never be afforded the opportunity to compete for elected office again. We will be relegated to third string water boys without benefit of Constitutional protection. Standby by for years of ass rape and public humiliation unless we are willing to step up with a plan which may be disagreeable to many, but the only option to retake our government. It's gonna be bloody. Posted by: Fish at April 01, 2009 09:54 AM (CG+cG) Posted by: eman at April 01, 2009 09:55 AM (RkZLl) 8

Worthwhile read, indeed. Again, I will pose the question: Who on earth will ever willingly buy a GM vehicle ever again? Certainly not I. It is bad enough that I will pay for this through my taxes (and not get a car out of the deal), but I will absolutely not further support this through purchases. On a very base level, I want nothing to do with any of this, and that extends into what I want to look at whenever I open my garage. To me, this would be no different than if a car manufacturer started to name all their cars girl-names, one of which happened to be the name of a terrible, terrible ex-girlfriend. Why on earth would I want to buy a car that would remind me of her every time I had to go to work? Why on earth would I want to be reminded of this terrible, terrible waste of my taxpayer money every time I had to drive to work? I would be if I was driving a GM. This article is one of the reasons I've kept my subscription to the WSJ for the last 30 years; even with the center-left slant of the typical reporter, the editors and columnists make sure plenty of reality seeps through to the content.

"This incestuous relationship between the Obamaites and labor is of great concern. Maybe after Barry shuts down an assembly plant, he can "offer" the UAW members there jobs working for him! You know, answering phones for ACORN, counting citizens for the census, going door-to-door to help convince the average American that Barry is still the best thing ever... Don't have enough "volunteers" yet? Close another plant! The "volunteers" are getting paid anyway, since they have that sweet, sweet "job bank" provision... I think Obama's doing absolutely the right thing. The government needs to take control of large corporations, banks, personal wealth, etc. for the good of us all. With his vast executive experience and proven radical ideas I believe Obama will set this country on the right track at long last.

Looks like an error in calculation and makes sense since this guy had trouble doing his own taxes. Interesting that George Stephanopoulos is bringing this out. (got the headline from Hotair)

Jenkins should continue this column. Reagan bought the Big Three and the UAW an 8 year trade protection through the voluntary export quotas the Japanese negotiated with Japanese auto makers. The whole fucking purpose of the agreement was to allow the Big Three to make the small, fuel efficient vehicles that Japan was selling in the United States. Japan couldn't make the cars fast enough. They sold out almost everywhere.
Instead the Big Three continued to make the same old shit. To get around the 8 year agreement the japanese auto makers just started building PLANTS IN THE UNITED STATES. These fuckers don't get it. Players in the markets are smarter than them. They will sail around whatever regulations elected officials will craft to stifle competition. Can anybody explain to me why GW Bush's administration scrambled to
keep GM from declaring bankruptcy in November or December when there
might have been a chance of getting UAW concessions?
I think the main reason is that W. didn't want to go out as the guy who killed General Motors. W. became very risk-averse in his last six-months in office, preferring instead to simply lay off the tough decisions to the new Administration. I also suspect that W. also knew that there was no why in hell McCain was going to win the election, and didn't want to saddle the GOP with yet another "they killed the economy!" canard. Part of this strategy worked a treat: Obama came in and pissed away a huge amount of money on both GM and Chrysler, only to find that the doubters were right all along. The companies are indeed untenable as presently structured, and really have no alternative to Chapter 11. But Obama now owns that choice, as does the Democrat Congress. The UAW may retain some political potency for a time, but its power-base is spent. There is no way it can dictate terms in this economic climate. In fact, the UAW isn't terribly relevant except as a player in the bankruptcy filing. Their power over new hires is minuscule. Their real power-base is car-industry retirees, and this constituency shrinks every year for obvious reasons. I suspect that the UAW will simply bleed-out at some point and that will be that. Posted by: Monty at April 01, 2009 10:54 AM (/0a60) 26
This is an opportunity.
The MSM provides tweaked polls every few days telling us how much we Americans love fascism. Now we'll find out how accurate they really are. No one that values freedom and longs for the America we knew just a few months ago would buy anything from Government Motors. Soon we'll know how much faith people really have in all this insanity. Posted by: The Haimster at April 01, 2009 11:10 AM (SCQ/E) 27
There was a large car company that quit making cars in December, 1963. They weren't bankrupt, but would have been if they continued. Shortly before leaving the field, apparently with insider advice, they changed the vesting rules for retirement. This meant that the fully vested ex-employees got a full pension, but a lot of people who'd been misled (by their contract) did not. There was quite a furor, and, finally, increased government oversight of corporate pensions, leading to the totally secure workers' paradise we live in today. The union president who allowed this was given a high post in the federal War On Poverty program. Moral of the story? Leave Gettelfinger where he is. There's no telling where he'd end up next. Posted by: comatus at April 01, 2009 11:10 AM (zFDqJ) 28
"Their real power-base is car-industry retirees, and this constituency shrinks every year for obvious reasons." I got a sophmoric snicker out of this, because the other night, on the local news, they had an interview with some retiree from the Arlington, TX plant. You should've seen this whopper! Probably couldn't touch his fingertips around the widest part of his own gut without suckin' in and breaking a sweat. He ain't part of the "shrinking" constituency, not by any means. UAW bonuses. How much is each worth? How much are they ALL worth? More than the AIG bonuses? Naahh, Obabel would stand for that. Would he? Posted by: Dang at April 01, 2009 11:26 AM (0kuJD) 31
reason:
UAW retirees will continue to be a force to be reckoned with because a) they're old, and old people vote; and b) they reliably vote Democrat. There are many relatively-young UAW retirees (some in their mid-fifties!), but as the more elderly die and no new members come in, their political power will fade. And it's possible that with GM's bankruptcy and a re-writing of the pension contracts, even the retirees might sour on the UAW and on Democrats in general. But it's unlikely: you will never meet a more determined proponent of the welfare state than a retired union worker. Posted by: Monty at April 01, 2009 11:27 AM (/0a60) 32

"you will never meet a more determined proponent of the welfare state than a retired union worker." Amen to that, Brother Monty. As someone with a white-collar job at a facility that also has about 3,000 blue-collar represented machinists...I've seen plenty of the average union bubba, and heard plenty of their ideologies... It is actually kinda fun to watch them strike. Only happened once since I've been employed here, but I made the most of it. There was a road with about five or six entrances along it. Each one manned with a little group of strikers, lazing about, only forming their picket line / scab checkpoint across the entrance whenever a car passed by. They got complacent after a few days, and only did it when they actually saw someone about to pull in, instead of simply passing by. This level of slovenly attitude, even when striking, was unacceptable to me. I would make it a point to slow down at each entrance and hit my turn signal...wait just long enough to make sure they'd all get up off their lawn chairs, hoist their signs, and start their little march...then I'd turn my blinker off and go on my way to do the same at the next entrance. The only to decimate the unions is for business to stop allowing automatic payroll deductions for union dues. Make the slugs write their own checks to the unions bosses. I guarantee a 40% drop in union membership in 3 months.
It is the first thing the union negotiators force into the labor agreements, therefore it is valuable. I would also pay guys more - not to be in the union. Sign a at risk-labor contract for higher wages, bonuses, and different color badge. I would also never allow a potential strike disable the company; it would be part of my disaster plan/contingency plan stuff for SOX. Codify the process to screw the union - not just with scabs. But, with subcontracts, new sites, etc. Just like a hurricane. Posted by: Jean at April 01, 2009 11:57 AM (L64A6) 35

They are way ahead of you. H.R. 5804 the Taxpayer Responsibility, Accountability, and Consistency Act of 2008 and H.R. 6111 the Employee Misclassification Prevention Act of 2008 were introduced in the 110th Congress to discourage companies from doing business with independent contractors. I have no reason to believe that in the current labor ass-kissing climate similar bills won't be introduced in the 111th. Basically, the first bill seeks to dramatically reduce the federal employment-tax certainty of treating service providers as independent contractors and the second to ramp up the financial consequences of "misclassification". "Card Check" ain't the only plum the Dems are offering up to labor. Posted by: Deety at April 01, 2009 12:28 PM (1jglO) 39

Jean,
No, didn't even come up for debate in the House. They just have them all polished up and ready to go to be re-introduced under a new number next session. But, I'm not really worried, 'cause I'm sure Senators like Specter would put a stop to this right away if it got to the Senate. We all know how beholden Congress is to the powerful Independent Contractors' lobby. Posted by: Deety at April 01, 2009 01:16 PM (1jglO) 41

We need those bonuses for the morning Egg and Sausage McMuffin runs. One gets hungry after an hour of getting in the way of a forklift while carrying a box of headlight buttons from the parts bin.
