The Limbaugh Challenge

I'm posting this editorial because I have a soft spot not only for Maha-Rushie, but also for watching someone call out the readership of the LA Times as a bunch of girly-men with skulls full of mush.

I mean, check out the following blockquote. It is a thing of beauty, and something I wish I'd written:

By lifting some typically Rushian piece of outrageous hilarity completely out of context, the distortion gang knows full well it can get you to widen your eyes and open your mouth in the universal sign of Liberal Outrage. Your scrawny chest swelling with a warm sense of completely unearned righteousness, you will turn to your second spouse and say, "I'm not a liberal, I'm a moderate, and I'm tolerant of a wide range of differing views -- but this goes too far!"

There is more untruthfulness in that statement than in a speech by President Obama. Even the commas are self-deceiving. You're not a moderate or you wouldn't be reading this newspaper. You're not tolerant of a wide range of views; you are tolerant of a narrow spectrum of variations on your views. And, whatever you claim, you still haven't listened to Rush Limbaugh.

And for those LA TIMES readers from Rio Linda, here is a synopsis of the above paragraphs the author helpfully provides:

Now let me tell you the real answer: You're a lowdown, yellow-bellied, lily-livered intellectual coward. You're terrified of finding out he makes more sense than you do.

Sure, there will be some on the right who wring their hands about appealing to the "middle" with the softer, kinder language of the perpetually clueless. Much more fun, however, will be to watch the leftists to whom this broadside is aimed scurry about trying to prove, lest they be revealed to be hypocrites, that they actually have "Rush Creds" after all.

In any event a blast with both barrels is occasionally necessary to loosen the rust embedded in the system. I hereby nominate Andrew Klavan for this weeks "Slices Like a Hammer" award.

lol @ appealing to the middle

I guess that means supporting only half of the Left's anti-American policies or meeting the anti-American Leftwingers half-way on their radical policies.

Sorta like being in a parliament with Hamas and reaching across the aisle and agreeing to wipe out only half of the Israelis. You know, to be a moderate, like Snowe, Collins, and Specter.

24 On The Suicidal Futility of "Appealing to the Middle"

Argumentum ad Temperantiam

Unlike many of our forbears, today we live in a broken world based on the erroneous notion that 2 + 2 = 5 .

Why?

Because we refuse to demand recognition of the fact that 2 + 2 = 4.

Instead we think it "noble" and "moderate" to compromise with pseudo-intellectual moral adolescents who feel they can change human nature so that 2 + 2 = 6.

When this stops we will have broken the historical cycle of civilizations' rise and fall.

29 Snorkel: "...but I think his delivery method sucks. I'm sure he does it to twist the Lib's tails but it probably alienates a lot of the fence sitters."

To the former, Limbaugh is one of the best communicators alive today. He cannot help it if those who demonize him reflexively do so by not listening to him and by accepting the spin (which will always exist) from political hacks and outsource their own thinking. To the latter, the fence sitters are looking to be led. By default they are not thinking for themselves but counting on others to explain in little words what they should believe.

This is the whole point of Klavan's challenge.

Limbaugh leads and those on the Right need to carry the banner, too. Lead because you know what you believe. Think for yourself. Keep your principles and never back down. The middle remains fickle, unpredictable, and generally ignorant. Their duty is to become informed though, by their nature, they won't until something personally dramatic induces them to seek an alternative. The Right's duty is to be there with their own foundation of experience, history, and knowledge and teach the strays who finally become aware of the world around them.

This is subtext to Klavan's challenge.

As soon as Frum, C. Buckley, the K. Parker, and Noonan chime in on Klavan, we'll have heard from the exceptions that prove the rule.

They sit on the fence so they can easily jump away from a fight. The squishy moderate is always the first to run away, the first to stab you in the back, the first to rat you out.

Posted by: kbdabear at March 29, 2009 03:25 PM (miw86)

44 I'm sure he does it to twist the Lib's tails but it probably alienates a lot of the fence sitters.

And I'm sure that the Libs also tend to alienate some of these fence sitters as well. How could they not, with their sanctimony and bile? So, you win some, you lose some on that score.

At some point though, is it not worth it to make fence-sitting as uncomfortable as possible?  Some of these types seem to be insisting that they be fed nothing but lie after pleasant (albeit implausible) sounding lie, in order to flatter their self image.   Whose aims does that kind of tactic serve, do you think?

I think that Klavan hits the nail on the head when he calls these "moderates" on their self-deception.  "You're not tolerant of a wide range of views; you are tolerant of a narrow spectrum of variations on your views."

There is nothing that threatens the self image of these soi-disant stylites than to be called less than informed, to let them know that no, in fact, you have not arrived at any particular position due to the superior exercise of reason with your oh, so flexible, and wide ranging intellect.

When the default position of "the moderate" is in truth to aid and abet the growth of an ever more intrusive and coercive state, it is time to stop legitimizing such sentiments as, "Well, the trains are more punctual this way, and that's a good thing.", merely to spare the fence-sitter some discomfort.

I understand that Limbaugh is not everyone's cup of tea but there's no getting around the fact that no matter who or how delivered, the gadfly's sting will hurt.  It's supposed to.

71  The fence sitters (AKA people who never actually vote Republican but pretend they are "free thinkers") are not the voters we want.  They can go fuck themselves.

If Juan McCain, Mr. Amnesty Incarnate, the Best Friend Of The New York Times, won't motivate them to vote for the Democratic-Lite party, nothing will.

We have to recognize that the strategy of play to the bitchy center is a waste of time, because compromising values and principles is the policy of the DEMOCRATIC PARTY.   Once we compromise our values and principles for political expediency, the Democrats have immediately won.

America, presented with authentic Conservative values, principles, and policies always votes conservative.  Then we put belt-way assclowns incharge of the party, and they decide that Conservatism no longer works, so let's give up what actually won as elections and use what loses us elections.

It's baffling.

Posted by: Sir Elliot at March 29, 2009 04:16 PM (DUNS7)

72 I'm on a roll, so I'm just going to keep on going.

Giving into the Democratic-Lite position of "Let's pretend that nothing is wrong and not say bad things about anyone" is part of the problem.  If our party's leadership simply bothered publicly calling shennanigans on the Democrats a lot of the shit that happens wouldn't happen.

Instead our congressional leadership "doesn't want to make waves" by filing ethics complaints against the Dems for their obvious near-bribe-experiences.  Our Congressional leadership doesn't want to "cause trouble" by pointing out the insane level of media bias, especially in party affiliation reporting.

If our leadership would just adopt some of the tactics of Limbaugh-- that is, calling a spade a spade and calling out obvious bullshit when it is both obvious and bullshit, it would go a long way towards fixing our problems.  But none of this will ever happen until the Republican Paty is a conservative party.  As long as we act like Democrats we will never challenge the democrats.

And for those reasons, the folks that say Rush and his tactics are costing us votes, are absolutely full of absolutely shit.  The minute even 1 conservative principle is abandoned, we have become Democrats, and the Democrats have won.

The only hope of electoral victory Republicans have is in Rush and his tactics.

Posted by: Sir Elliot at March 29, 2009 04:23 PM (DUNS7)

73 andros: "I think Rush Limbaugh costs us votes."

Ahahaha.

Define "us." The AoSHQ is pretty far Right - open to debate, of course - but cuts through the BS like a hammer whatever the ideology. If you are "us," which is to say conservative, what's with your beef of Limbaugh? Limbaugh is one of us (conservative). Espousing conservative thought is hurting us and conservatism? Bull. Shit. Unless you're them.

Limbaugh is conservative. The vast majority of commenters here are conservative. At best, you're a moby. At worst, Axelrod is your uncle and paymaster. Sure, we'd (and by we'd, I mean you'd) like to bottle him up to isolate him just like Alinsky et al. instruct, but that really hasn't worked out so well for the Right. The rest of the country is now discovering that painful truth, too.

I hope Limbaugh continues to cost "us" votes.

They can go fuck themselves.

Agreed. With a chainsaw.

If Juan McCain...won't motivate them to vote for the Democratic-Lite party, nothing will.

So true. If anything, 2008 taught us that running a moderate is not the way to go. Yet, some in the GOP think we didn't go moderate enough. Fuck them, too. And, please no more fucking stupid advice from Libertarians. The Libertarians that actually do go out and vote, vote for the loony Libertarian candidate. Always. All the time. So fuck the Libertarians, too.

Once we compromise our values and principles for political expediency, the Democrats have immediately won.

More like false political expediency.

The only reason Rush costs conservatives votes is when they back off and apologize, thereby outing themselves as unreliable moderates.

Been visiting Booker Rising, a Black Conservative site. Commentary there is that they are watching to see how Steele is handled. They recognize that he is in over his head, but are distrustful that he will be treated fairly.

And you're not alone. Even Obama is advising his political enemies to ditch Rush.If Rush was irrelevant, like, say, Cindy Sheehan, why are so many leftwingers so concerned for the Republican party?

81 andros: "Well, I don't think Rush really matters these days..."

That would, of course, explain the significant increase in his audience that just happened and is continuing. Because he doesn't matter. No, his plastering a Democrat operative scheme originating at the highest levels of the TOTUS while increasing public attention and infusing the Right with the ammo and righteousness to fight is just the kind of inconsequential exposure no one notices.

And, of course, the conservatives, i.e. the proverbial "we," are just itching to attribute the terms "loser" and "slaughter" with the non-sequiter of Palin and Jindal plus the extra flavoring of ad hominizing "porky."

You really need to work on your transparency which is to say don't make it quite so clear. You've become the Special Olympics (thank you, TOTUS) of New York Times crossword puzzles.

We lost North Carolina and Indiana. If running a moderate broadens our tent, tell me how the fuck we lost two red states like NC and IN?

We should have won blue states if the formula for winning was a shift to the center, right? The fact is that moving towards the center, which just so happens to also be moving away from Rush Limbaugh's brand of Conservatism, cost us votes and, I believe, cost us the election to Obama.

84 Darling,

I think if we want a shot at winning in 2012, of course we should dump porky and all the hat he stands for and come up with a platform that actually appeals to Americans everywhere.

But few Republicans seem interested in winning elections anymore.

Better to be "right" than elected, I guess.

Moving to the center, appeasing maderates makes conservatives stay home. I voted for McCain, but with trepidation. I hated 70% of his platform, and yes, he was donk-lite. .......'10-'12 is ours to lose. We need a fire breather, not a squeakholer.

87 I started this blog back in 2004 under the nickname Andros. I'm a liberal, a secular humanist...

http://liberalcitizen.blogspot.com/

The conservatives have turned into a party of "no." Nothing new to offer, if anything at all. They hope that their best chance is for Obama and the Congressional Dems to fail or be corrupted by power for the GOP to return to relevancy. That might happen, but let's hope that the country doesn't have a short memory syndrome. The huge mess we're experiencing is the result of Republican policies and conservative ideology. It hasn't been only their incompetence that reduced our country by most meaningful measures!

The Economy. Self-regulating unbridled capitalism leads to its own demise. Somebody has to be at the wheel watching the road.

Democrats come the closest to my ideology, my views, my aspirations, and the vision for the future. Clinton (and his Democratic Leadership Council) was too conservative, but I understood the big difference between Clinton and any Repub. So, I was elated he won.

89 Martin Luther King was a Republican, just like Abraham Lincoln.   Liberals hate that, did Steele remember to remind him?   And yes, CNN is an extremely liberal outfit that is shilling for one side.

If Steele forgot to do his job and let liberals tell history their way as they like to do, here's a good history on the subject of why MLK was a God-fearing Republican.

End of slavery, fighting Jim Crow, starting NAACP, starting black universities, all Republican.

How were Democrats treating King?

President Kennedy, through his brother Atty. Gen. Robert Kennedy, had Dr. King wiretapped and investigated by the FBI on suspicion of being a Communist in order to undermine Dr. King.

Why the hell would we want to broaden the tent?  And, making it about diversity is about the most racist thing we can do....pandering like that should be beneath an intelligent conservative party.  We should simply try to attract the people who understand the concepts of self-determination and limited government, regardless of any physical characteristic.  UNFORTUNATELY, the public school system has brain fucked generations of people into believing this is a bad country and certain groups are owed a nice living because of their victim status.  That would be everyone but you, cracker ass cracker.

The demographics are getting us, and the politicians know this.  They are pandering because they can see the data, the writing on the wall, and they know their goose is cooked if they don't pander to the liberal tenets of victimization and diversity.

96 Instead our congressional leadership "doesn't want to make waves" by filing ethics complaints against the Dems for their obvious near-bribe-experiences.  Our Congressional leadership doesn't want to "cause trouble" by pointing out the insane level of media bias, especially in party affiliation reporting.

____

Not showing the media bias, and challenging them about it on their stations is insane and gop candidates will lose if something isn't said quickly.  It's got to be done right away because the media got worse than ever last time, and purposely affected the last election worse than ever before.

This one is driving me nuts.   Until Conservatives go out every day, and show the data that 9 out of 10 journalists who donated money the last election cycle gave to the Democrats and yet admitted no bias, in fact pretended to be neutral, a lot of people I know won't believe it's happening.

Republicans have to make this an issue pronto.   Facts, figures, it's all out there but outside the blogosphere and Conservative circles the general public REALLY doesn't know.  I talk to them, they won't know until Republicans start making it an issue, loudly.

They won't admit Bobby Jindal, and Sarah Palin (Steele too) represent the very diversity they love to wax poetic about, being that they count women as "minorities" too when women are 51% of the population.  It's all a scam.

Hispanics and Asians from India to China (family and business oriented), African American business owners and professionals have Conservative values and all that needs to happen is for them to hear what the GOP stands for loudly and often.

This "the Demographics are made for Democrats" bullshit is just a media talking point.  They're trying to keep repeating it until it becomes a self-fulfilling prophesy.  Don't let it.

111 The truth is liberals would assume any immigrant from Italy or eastern Europe at the turn of the last century would be an automatic liberal, too.

The hard truth is this: most immigrants have to work their asses off to get ahead, and hate taxes more than anyone. I honestly believe the typical immigrant, of whatever background, typically values this country FAR more than the average liberal.

Electoral college has us boned hard, too.  Cali and NY are forever blue.  Florida is iffy and, hell, Texas is changing rapidly.

It's the urbanites that will destroy us.  Something about living under and on top of your neighbors that leads naturally to collectivism.  The underclass want handouts.  The elites want to make handouts.  The middle class goes along with the appeasement in hopes of being eaten last.

The one bright spot is that Dinkins made Giuliani possible, but NYC had to go through hell before they were ready for Rudy.

If the non-left wants to reclaim or even just to preserve what remains of America, we are going to have to get off the fence and embrace class warfare.

While I do believe that each man is born with some intrinsic value, how he chooses to conduct his life can more than offset that value.

True.  The problem is, the "demographics" have forgotten the true pain of retarded leadership in the form of our bowling President, san fran and reid, due to 30 years of great prosperity.  That's how they find these caustic ideas palatable.

Yes, that is what Obama stands for... but I think most people that voted for him were more motivated by war weariness, exacerbated by the liberal temper tantrum over Bush all those years. If Bush had just communicated with the country better, defended himself, let the people know what he was up to and why it was necessary... things might have been different. We just didn't sell ourselves well enough, and let far more aggressive Democrats steal the ball.

But you know what? What Obama is trying to do to this country will scare the bejesus out of everyone. It would take true Republican incompetence not to pick up considerable numbers of seats in 2010... and if inflation soars, Democrats will relive 1980 all over again in 2012.

138 @130 gator

I live a little outside of D.C.

I can almost guarantee that the unrest is going to start in the cities.  This administration is packed to the brim with idiots who have no idea of how day-to-day life happens.  This is why they make the colossal fucking mistakes that they make.

Reactive targets cost money, and I have to drive a long way to get to a range that allows them.

Do you think I'll think twice about wasting the opportunity of a steady stream of free reactive targets coming out of that shithole on the Potomac?

As for the "moderation" issue.

Fuck moderation. The moderates get to be junior staff at the camps and go to the incinerators last after we've turned the liberals to air pollution. To quote GEN Steiner, the old SOCOM commander, "the only thing you find in the middle of the road is yellow paint and dead possums".

Millions of people in America are already fed up with Obama's incompetence and they want their voices heard in Washington.

This is why the Republicans need to hold weekly townhalls all over the country and let average Americans ask their politicians questions about what the hell is going on in Washington D.C.

I guaran-fucking-tee the videos would go viral. But the GOP is sitting on it's hands while Obama does what Bush shoulda been doing -- taking his case to the people.

154 I thinking talking down to liberals and putting them in the place is the best approach.  Hit them where it hurts most (their egos) if you want their attention.  Liberals always seem to confuse arrogance with intelligence.  Just look at who they nominate: Bill Clinton, Al Gore, John Kerry, and Obama.  I'm certain that most people do not personally know four people more arrogant or self centered.  In his day the media tried to tell us that Bill Clinton was intelligent.  No, acting superior and highly confident is arrogance not intelligence.  Same thing with Obama.

The left need to be hoist upon their own petard. My answer to people that complain about Rush is "Really, I didn't know you listened to Rush? What did you hear on his show that offended you?" and "Do you really believe everything people tell you?" The intellectual uncuriousity of the modern lib is staggering,

Looks like we just had a teaching moment there, Darling.

For some odd reason, radio measures its audience by the week, other media measure it by the hour or day.

"and Rush is on 5 days a week, which would be 4 million a day."

And so is Bill O'Reilly, buster.

But he only gets paid for his daily audience of about 3 million, not the phony radio stat of a weekly "audience" of about 15 million.

See? Andros and a bunch of pant-wetting moonbat bloggers are smarter than the radio station owners and executives. You see, andros and company know more about the radio biz than those making a living in the radio biz.

So when the execs sign deals with Rush,  Howard Stern,  Alan Colmes, or Laura Ingraham they should consult andros first because their figures are all wrong.

They're doing it wrong!!! says andros. They shouldn't be calculating listenership with that fuzzy math because they're fooling themesleves and their advertisers. The advertisers are fools for not listening to andros. Wow those advertisers are fucking stupid for believing those numbers without reading some unhinged moonbat's blog on how many listeners Rush really has.

Thanks andros. Now I know fire melts steel and Rush has only about 20 listeners, thanks to the knowledge on the internet.

Posted by: Gyn Andros at March 29, 2009 08:58 PM (PGSXB)

192 The issue of how many listeners Rush has is kinda immaterial. The impact he has, as all media has, is subject to a force multiplier. Battlestar Galactica for instance is immensely powerful and influential on TV, but the actual numbers of watchers it has is surprisingly low. I would be surprised if the series finale drew more than 20 million watchers. Rush's impact goes beyond the folks listening to his 15 hours a week of programming, His cogent points and persuasive passion move people that don't listen to his show, and the block of people that do agree with him is such a force that Steele and the GOP ignore them at their peril.

Posted by: billhedrick at March 29, 2009 09:09 PM (txGlt)

193 According to the Pew Center for Media Research, among the best educated consumers of any broadcast media are the listeners of Rush.

"Internet news sources, National Public Radio, news magazines, and Rush Limbaugh's radio show have the best educated audiences, with each of these having at least 36% of their regular readers and listeners having graduated from college."

I listen to Rush as background noise to my menial job as a college professor.

It has to find sites on the: Stock trading softwares. I found only this - Trading stock exchange. It's always good if the brand is trusted by you and others. It was bad enough when I went to school and it's a ton worse now. Waiting for a reply ;-), Malka from Belize.
