Clinton's Mexico Blunder

I agree with John, this seems like it can't possibly be a true story:

During her recent visit to Mexico, U.S. Secretary of State Hillary Clinton made an unexpected stop at the Basilica of Our Lady of Guadalupe and left a bouquet of white flowers “on behalf of the American people,” after asking who painted the famous image.

The image of Our Lady of Guadalupe was miraculously imprinted by Mary on the tilma, or cloak, of St. Juan Diego in 1531. The image has numerous unexplainable phenomena, such as the appearance on Mary’s eyes of those present in the room when the tilma was opened and the image’s lack of decay.

Mrs. Clinton was received on Thursday at 8:15 a.m. by the rector of the Basilica, Msgr. Diego Monroy.

Msgr. Monroy took Mrs. Clinton to the famous image of Our Lady of Guadalupe, which had been previously lowered from its usual altar for the occasion.

After observing it for a while, Mrs. Clinton asked “who painted it?” to which Msgr. Monroy responded “God!”

Really? Really? She asked, "Who painted it?"

Forehead-smackingly embarrassing. Non-Catholics and even some Catholics who don't live in the southwest might not know the image of Our Lady of Guadalupe. But Clinton claimed to have been to the Basilica before. Has Clinton never wondered why half the cars in the southwest have little replicas or stickers of the image? Hell, I've got one on my car.

Ignorance like this demonstrates cringe-worthy lack of preparation from our number one representative to other countries. We'd be in better shape if she sat in her office and tried very hard not to insult anyone else. I suggest duct tape might do the trick.

12 The tilma is fascinating, to those who don't know the story.  It's over 400 years old, and the Catholic Church has hired atheist experts to study it to help figure it out.  There are no brushstrokes, the image just seems to hover over the material.  They put a microscope over the eyes of the Virgin, and there are other images contained within, including what seems to be a "photostat" of Juan Diego.

It should also be mentioned that Our Lady of Guadalupe is considered the Protectress of the unborn in the Catholic church, and the next night Ms. Clinton was "honored" with  the highest award given by Planned Parenthood:

– the Margaret Sanger Award, named for the organization’s founder, a noted eugenicist. The award was presented at a gala event in Houston, Texas.

this incident is already in the complete Wikipedia article on Our Lady of Guadalupe:

On Thursday March 26, 2009 during a visit to Mexico, U.S. Secretary of State Hillary Clinton made an unexpected stop at the Basilica of Our Lady of Guadalupe and left a bouquet of white flowers “on behalf of the American people,” after asking who painted the famous image.

Monroy responded “God!” Clinton then told Msgr. Monroy that she had previously visited the old Basilica in 1979, when the new one was still under construction. After placing a bouquet of white flowers by the image, Mrs. Clinton went to the quemador –the open air area at the Basilica where the faithful light candles- and lit a green candle. Leaving the basilica half an hour later, Mrs. Clinton told some of the Mexicans gathered outside to greet her, “you have a marvelous virgin!”

44 I googled "Juan Diego's tilma scientific analysis" and found a report indicating the tilma is made from hemp and contains varnish and paint.

Hemp, it says, can last centuries. Also, according to this report, testing suggests the tilma may have carried an earlier image that was covered with varnish and then replaced with the Mary image.

I have read that as well before.  I have never been to Mexico City, let alone seen the tilma.  I wonder if it suffered the same fate many churches in North America have, that of the old artwork being painted over with either whitewash, or tackier modern stuff.  I personally wonder what the story is on that image for sure, but something about it got thousands of Indianss to convert peacefully.  Whatever the origins, it is one of the most famous and influential in history.

Here's an account of the testing done on the painted tilma by the church:

In 1666, the Church began investigating the miracle of the image’s appearance and its continued existence. The most accomplished artists and the most notable scientists gathered in Mexico to study and examine the portrait. The scientific experts examined the image from the point of view of science; the foremost artists of Mexico were called upon to examine it and report on it from their background in art and in the techniques of painting, the preparation of canvas, and the knowledge of their pigments.

The artists together examined it first. They examined the coarse linen of the tilma on which it had been painted, and having conferred and compared their observations, they made a unanimous declaration: “It is impossible for any human craftsman to paint or create a work so fine, clean, and well-formed on a fabric so coarse as that of the tilma on which this divine and sovereign painting of Our Lady is painted: no one but God could create a thing so beautiful and with so many perfections as those found in the holy painting.” They found that the colors are embedded and incorporated in the coarse threads of the fabric.

The artists also discovered that the image was somehow painted by using four distinct media on the one surface: oil, tempera, water color, and fresco. Today, more than four centuries later, it is still unheard of that these four media, none of which is compatible with any other, could come together on one canvas.

The head and hands of the Blessed Virgin were executed in oil. The tunic, the angel and the clouds which frame it were done in tempera. The mantle was painted in water color, and the background frescoed. These four media are so distinct in their workmanship that each one requires its own special sizing and solvent; this makes it all the more miraculous a combination.

Next came the testimony by the scientists. Known as the “Physicians Royal,” these scientists declared in complete agreement that the damp and salty air of the environment was not a natural help in conserving the painting. The miraculous image had kept the brilliance of its original colors for over 130 years at this time when, given normal conditions the fabric of the tilma should itself have crumbled to nothing in less than twenty years. The scientists concluded that the creator of the miraculous image had suspended the ordinary laws and rules of nature, as He did in the instance of the conception of the Virgin Mary, so that it might be known that by this miracle there are very close likenesses between the original and the copy, the living model and the painting.

"Really just wanted to point out I think the Tea Parties are more important."

Agree, 100%

Listening to the BBC today, they made major world headlines out of the fact that a couple of thousand protesters showed up in London for the G-20 talks.  That's a couple of thousand, from the whole freaking world.  Denver got more than that, just from the metro area, for the Tea Party a few weeks ago.

Unless we can get a million people in Washington (no, never mind, even when the ProLife folks get those kinds of numbers, they don't get much coverage....)

We're still gonna see several days' worth of front page coverage for a few dozen ACORN activists cruising in a bus, looking for AIG executives, and not a peep about thousands of tax payers voicing their concerns at Tea Parties.

"Oh, shit....Lower right corner.... signed by one 'Pablo Cordero.' Damn, you're smart, Sec'y Clinton. No one ever thought to ask that, before. Wow, for centuries we assumed it was a miracle; but now we know better."

Even if it is, and even if Mrs. Clinton believes that it is, this object and the Lady it represents is an object of veneration for millions.  It is an item of enormous importance within the Hispanic community, and she should have shown respect.  She doesn't have to pretend to believe it's real, but there were a million different things she should or could have said instead of that.  It implies either ignorance or that the Catholic Church is passing off a fraud, and either implication is a disastrous diplomatic remark from a Secretary of State.

During the Bush administration, many of us were pretty skeptical of the Department of State, thinking that the lifers over there were deliberately trying to undermine Bush's presidency, and especially Rice's work, with the leaks and gaffes and apparent back-stabbing.

But now, I don't know.  Maybe it's worth a rethink.  Maybe they're all just fucking lazy, illiterate government teat-suckers.

But you fucking idiots are just ready to throw down over anything at all.  Well, good luck putting together a truth commission over this.  Why don't you try to make an impeachment out of it?  Pathetic morons.

It was just a question that any but a totally ignorant, unprepared, arrogant SoS who can't even find out how to say "Reset" in Russian, while surrounded by fluent Russian speakers, would not have needed to ask, because even a quick, 30 second google, before bopping over to the shrine, would have provided the answer.

"use it as an opportunity to educate and build a common understanding."

So, Hillary's whole State Department was so fucking clueless as to need to be "educated" on the most important cultural site of our southern neighbor?  Smartest fucking woman in the world, we've been told for almost 20 years now....

He blames the Mexicans, so typica.

Look, a young would-be liberal who would fail at a good university, where the smart liberals go.

What's funny about "Father Pederasty," other than the fact that his favorite President may have complex issues in the area of pederasty himself considering a mentor of his, is that Father Pederasty shows such vulgar disregard for Mexico, Catholics, and more.

Here he comes from the party preaching tolerance, but as is common among nearly illiterate young liberals-in-training is that he's actually blamed the Mexicans.

They weren't good hosts, he says.   He blames them being insulted on them and believes they  "should have responded to the question as a teaching moment" and according to him, the SOS's remark that offended them shouldn't have.   So they're to blame.

You must not have completed your liberal indoctrination courses yet, young libtard, for insulting a country, it's culture, and it's religion, are quite un-PC.

IF you have the scores to get into a real school (and just between you and Frank Marshall Davis, Obama's favorite pederast, you clearly don't) see what your professors think about this exchange.  They wouldn't be pleased if you snuck into a real school.  And if they saw this you would flunk out.

118 Father P:

It is not the job of the Secretary of State to undermine religious faith nor to insult her host nation.   Besides being a religious shrine, Our Lady of Guadalupe is a place of national pride for all of Mexico.

My parish in Indiana has a mass on her feast day, December 12, organized by a woman who emigrated here from Mexico back in the 1960's.  She is SO proud that she has been able to bring a reverence for the Virgin of Guadalupe to our parish.

This is a terrible insult to Mexico.  I realize you don't believe in this, but surely you can see how it would hurt those people who believe in this miracle.

Oh, and President Bush knew very well the power of the Virgin of Guadalupe.  His brother Jeb and his sister-in-law went to pray at the Basilica in Mexico City during the 2000 Florida recount...and the Supreme Court decision was handed down on December 12, 2000, the feast day of Our Lady of Guadalupe.

I wonder if hillary knows that the new Basilica was finished in 1976?

"The old basilica was sinking as a result of the weakness of the ground, as the city was built on a former lake. As a consequence a new, more spacious, basilica was built. The old one was closed for many years and repairs have recently finished."

I doubt they let people in the old one if it had structural weaknesses.  Perhaps she was too busy dodging bullets to notice she was in a modern building instead of a 16th century church?

It should also be added that the image of Guadalupe is that of a pregnant woman, hence her association with the pro-life cause

An even bigger reason for her association with the pro-life cause is the fact that Our Lady of Guadalupe is most responsible for leading countless formerly human-sacrificing Aztecs to convert to Christianity.

So, pointing out the fact that the question was entirely unreasonable, and your snarky response was more than a little stupid will give me an aneurysm? Why would that be?

I'm not upset. In fact, I'm rather enjoying the fact that the smartest woman in the world is proving that perhaps statecraft should be left to professionals, and she should maybe go back to baking cookies (oh, that's right, she doesn't do that, either.)

And since you only quoted the sentence that didn't address your asininity, let me repeat the rest:

"Let's see. It showed up 500 years ago; story is, God just made it appear. So now, super skeptical antrhopologist Hillary Clinton will get to the bottom of the mystery by asking a deep, incisive question of her guides [a Monsignor, yet]. Yeah, that's perfectly reasonable."

No, it's not a reasonable question. It might, or might not, be a reasonable topic for research by an historian or an anthropologist, but it's not a reasonable question for a Secretary of State to ask a Catholic priest.

It's never reasonable to ask a question in a situation where there's only one possible answer that you could receive, and it's an answer you should have known before you asked.

It showed nothing other than Hillary's total ignorance.

Look, it's perfectly okay to bash other religions except Islam because they'll kill you they're more sensitive about the topic.

As Democrats, we must enlighten the world by moving country to country showing how much contempt we have for their backwards cultural ways, just like we do in America. Think of it as "The Rime of the Ancient Mariner," except instead of being stranded on a boat for years, we just received an M.A. in something useless like sociology or grew up in New York.

This is what distinguishes us from the imperialistic provincialism of George Bush.

171 "Oh, and President Bush knew very well the power of the Virgin of Guadalupe.  His brother Jeb and his sister-in-law went to pray at the Basilica in Mexico City during the 2000 Florida recount...and the Supreme Court decision was handed down on December 12, 2000, the feast day of Our Lady of Guadalupe."

That is correct. Also, the final congressional whatchacallit that settled the issue once and for all occured on Jan. 6, feast of Our Lady of Peace.  Lots of good things happened for Bush on Marian feastdays.

The other thing interesting to note is that Guadalupe was only NAMED the Patroness of the Americas (and the unborn) in 1999, when JPII made a special trip to Mexico City (after being advised to put it off because Christmas was so near.)  JPII was the one who made it a point to do this in '99, and the one who said Dec 12 would be her feastday.  You could look it up.  The co-incidences re Bush and Marian feastdays was chronicled on at least a couple of blogs when it was going on.  I think Sept 11 was a sorrowful day of the rosary and Sept 14, when Bush got on the rubble and talked thru the bullhorn, was the feast of the Triumph of the Cross.

Then again, Catholics have a lot of feastdays so some of that might have been co-incidental.

But I still say Bush and Blair had some sort of connection to Mary, and I think it's why Blair converted.

177 In Hillary's defense: Maybe she thought that this was a question that Roman Catholic Mexicans are accustomed to hearing from non-Catholic Christian tourists? In other words, since she knows that they know that she's not Catholic, she might've decided that feigning ignorance of the Guadalupe legend (and thus inviting her hosts to enlighten her) was the safest and most diplomatic course of action.

Look at it this way: If I were a tourist at Sea World, and I wanted to get on the good side of Craig, the hunky orca trainer, in hopes that Craig would show me his big cock later on, one strategy I might try would be to ask a completely dumb-ass question like:

"Um, Craig [giggle], when are we gonna see how killer whales dig holes in the sand in order to lay their eggs?"

By doing this, I'm (a) flattering Craig by giving him a chance to show off his encyclopedic knowledge of cetacean reproduction, and (b) letting him know that I'm brainless enough to stand around with my mouth open while he shoves his dick in, and that I won't expect dinner or payment.

182 "In 1531 a “Lady from Heaven” appeared to a humble Native American at Tepeyac, a hill northwest of what is now Mexico City.
She identified herself as the ever virgin Holy Mary, Mother of the True God for whom we live, of the Creator of all things, Lord of heaven and the earth.
She made a request for a church to be built on the site, and submitted her wish to the local Bishop. When the Bishop hesitated, and requested her for a sign, the Mother of God obeyed without delay or question to the Church’s local Bishop, and sent her native messenger to the top of the hill in mid-December to gather an assorment of roses for the Bishop.
After complying to the Bishop’s request for a sign, She also left for us an image of herself imprinted miraculously on the native’s tilma, a poor quality cactus-cloth, which should have deteriorated in 20 years but shows no sign of decay 477 years later and still defies all scientific explanations of its origin."

"After placing a bouquet of white flowers by the image, Mrs. Clinton went to the quemador –the open air area at the Basilica where the faithful light candles- and lit a green candle.

Oh, for fuck's sake. The guy she put the question to, namely Monsignor Molroy, is the rector of the Basilica of Our Lady of Guadalupe.

Promulgating the Catholic faith is part of Molroy's job description as a monsignor, and explaining to non-Catholic visitors that Catholics consider the image to be of miraculous origin is part of his job as rector of the Basilica.

Thus, by asking "who painted this image," Hillary was providing her host -- the Monsignor -- with a conversational opening TO DO HIS GODDAMN FUCKING JOB. How is that offensive?

The Image of Our Lady is actually an Aztec Pictograph which was read and understood quickly by the Aztec Indians.

1. THE LADY STOOD IN FRONT OF
THE SUN
She was greater than the dreaded
Huitzilopochtli, their sun-god of war.

2. HER FOOT RESTED ON THE
CRESCENT MOON
She had clearly crushed Quetzalcoatl,
the feathered serpent moon-
god.

3. THE STARS STREWN ACROSS
THE MANTLE
She was greater than the stars of heaven which they worshipped.
She was a virgin and the Queen of the heavens for Virgo rests over
her womb and the northern crown upon her head. She appeared on
December 12, 1531 and the stars that she wore are the constellations
of the stars that appeared in the sky that day!

4. THE BLUE‑GREEN HUE OF HER MANTLE
She was a Queen because she wears the color of royalty.

5. THE BLACK CROSS ON THE BROOCH AT HER NECK
Her God was that of the Spanish Missionaries, Jesus Christ her son
who died on the cross for all mankind.

6. THE BLACK BELT
She was with child because she wore the Aztec Maternity Belt.

7. THE FOUR PETAL FLOWER OVER THE WOMB
She was the Mother of God because the flower was a special symbol
of life, movement and deity-the center of the universe.

8. HER HANDS ARE JOINED IN PRAYER
She was not God but clearly there was one greater than Her and she
pointed her finger to the cross on her brooch.

9. THE DESIGN ON HER ROSE COLORED GARMENT
She is the Queen of the Earth because she is wearing a contour map
of Mexico telling the Indians exactly where the apparition took place."

"Who painted it?" is a perfectly reasonable question for an ignorant Yankee Protestant to have asked. And it's not impolite, in itself: after all, if you sees a beautiful painting in an unfamiliar style, the first thing you want to know is the name of the artist. It shows appreciation and a wish to learn more, neither of which are bad in themselves.

That being said, I expect that the Secretary of State of our country to be a cut above the typical ignorant tourist. I expect that when she visits one of the world;s most important religious and cultural shrines, she will at least have made an effort to acquaint herself with the history and religious significance (or "mythology," if you prefer) of the place being visited. In other words, I hold the Secretary of State to a higher standard than applies to Mrs Babbit from Des Moines.

And it's not as if the story of the Virgin of Guadalupe was obscure or difficult to discover: just ask the first young man you see with the Virgin's image tattooed on his arm, and he'll be glad to tell you. (Father P., when you do so, be sure to use the traditional Mexican greeting, "Tu madre es una puta!")

Finally, it's entirely fair to ask how the press would have reacted had Colin Powell or Condolezza Rice made that blunder. My guess is that it would make headlines for weeks. Which is why we harp on it here: because someone has to the press's job for it on stories that don't fit the Narrative.

223 I'm sure Hillary's a clever woman.

I'm sure she knows a lot about politics and the law.

However, as Brown Line bluntly put it, this is exactly the kind of question an ignorant Yankee Protestant would ask.

Suffice to say, if you've slept through the entirety of the Clinton Admininstration, Hillary's Senate career and now the her nascent Secretary of Stateness, well, there just aren't enough hours in the day to bring you up to speed.

232 Sheesh. Every year, year after year, at Seder after Seder, Jews ask Ma Nishtana...? "Why is this night different from all other nights?"

Apparently, some of the literal-minded morons on this blog would have us believe that the stupid Jews ask the same questions year after year because they have some sort of brain damage that prevents them from retaining information, and so they keep on forgetting the answer.

After filtering and processing the digitized images of the eyes to eliminate "noise" and enhance them, he reports he made some astonishing discoveries: not only the "human bust" was clearly present in both eyes, but another human figures were seen as reflected in the eyes too."  http://tinyurl.com/4ou9n
