FAA: You are too stupid to understand this data

Since you, the public, are too stupid to understand bird strike data, we, the FAA are moving to prevent you from seeing any of it...in the name of transparent and open government of course.

...It's bad enough some citizens are under suspicion of being terrorists every time they board a plane. But despite the Obama administration's pledge of government transparency, the FAA thinks the public is too stupid to understand the data...

4 FAA - "The complexity of the information warrants care with its interpretation; releasing this information without benefit of proper analysis would not only produce an inaccurate perception of the individual airports and airlines but also inaccurate and inappropriate comparisons between airports/airlines,"

Let me help out with a literal translation: FAA- Katie Couric and Bryan Williams' combined IQ's are equivalent to a box of clawhammers. Therefore we can't trust them to accurately convey this message to the people. So fuck all y'all.

11 I see the FAA's point, though. The strikes are self-reported by the airlines, and the second the data become fodder for personal injury scumbags and travel advice websites the reporting rate is going to decline. The data will become meaningless.

12 I can offer one bird strike datum: seagull, Watertown, 1999 while walking the bike trail behind my house.

Bird strike data on my car, well, are legion.

13 I'm not going to indulge in a spot of moonbattery over this, but didn't the exact same thing happen with that flight out of NYC during Clinton's admin? The FAA wouldn't release dick all for something akin to the reasoning contained in that link, iirc.

15 Not surprising. The FAA has been in bed with the airlines for years. They and the MSM have a lot in common.

21 Note to the FAA, release the data in a binary format compatible only with the ancient databases and big iron running hand coded OS that you, and you alone have. If anyone decodes it, claim they made an error and refer it to a committee.

22 How do you think he got elected? By banking on the fact that a majority of the people in this country are stupid.

He made his point. And the FAA is only acknowledging that fact.

24 The FAA, however, divulges limited information concerning what it
called "wildlife threats" or strikes. The number of strikes annually
reported more than quadrupled from 1,759 in 1990 to a record 7,666 in
2007.

Translation: FAA minions dare not present evidence of culpability of the wildlife fanatics in other govt humanity-hating agencies.

25 They are covering for the fact that we need to be SHOOTING MORE BIRDS!

Thus reducing the chance of engine ingestion or wing leading-edge strike and deformation.

And, as said above, the public IS too stupid.

Cue the conspiracy theorists....

Nuts on.

I worked on an airfield expansion project - like a lot of big flat places people haven't bothered to build on back when, this was a wet-land when the airfield was first built eighty years ago. Now that the airfield was expanding, environmental regs require that the wet-land be mitigated, right at the edge of an active airfield (restoration had to be on site).

This FAA is still the Executive- Obama -cannot show negative impacts to the human environment due to excessive/zealious regard for the animal environment.

If President Ocession *only* triples the deficit we should be happy. Fives times is the most likely currently - though maybe if we can keep him and his teleprompter on TV he won't have time to spend more of our money.

Posted by: 18-1 at March 27, 2009 10:25 PM (odYmd)

30 @29 -

That's not the deficit, that's the DEBT.

As in we've been adding to it at a less than 100% per annum growth rate for a while.

Now we're into yearly doublings.

It's like you added a grand a year to your credit card debt every year until you got to 10k in the hole, and then you started charging 20 grand a year.

A trillion here, a trillion there, all of a sudden you're talking about a metric assload of money.

33 I got recent first hand experience with those motherfuckers at the FAA. (apologies to motherfuckers). I quit a job in aviation due to the fact that if I had to spend one more second around one of those assholes I was going to start with physical assault and ramp it up from there.

In summary, aviation is safe IN SPITE OF anything the FAA does. Every recent FAA regulation I've seen makes aviation LESS safe.

And it's not just me, the wacko conservative free market loony. At FAA conferences people in industry openly take about how profitable it would be to hire someone to kill some of the FAA scum bags.

35 I guess there's some sort of hidden rule that the concept of "transparency" only applies to Republicans. Consequently, if Democrats want to hide something, everyone in the freaking world is totally ok with that, because, well, we trust the Commie Fascist Democrat party.

/do not know if anything is being hidden here, but then again, why hide something if there is nothing to hide?

Posted by: shibumi at March 27, 2009 11:52 PM (tZB/c)

36 I agree with the commenter above who guessed that releasing detailed stats on birdstrikes would get a lot more folks to realize that ridiculous policies (like requiring wetland restoration *right next to an airport*) probably were going to result in needless extra deaths of passengers.

Of course I stopped flying the airlines when the TSA demanded that I take off my shoes and not take my bottled drink past the checkpoint, so it really doesn't matter to me anymore.

Posted by: sf at March 28, 2009 09:31 AM (xz5dP)

37 I think the FAA is afraid that the data will end up in the hands of moron engineers and moron scientists, who'll analyze the data and conclude the FAA is full of it.

And no, "it" is NOT data.
