NY-20 Congressional Race: Democrat Murphy Leads By 4 Points

You can make a lot of arguments against polls in general and ones in special elections specifically but the trend isn't good for Republican Jim Tedisco.

Democrat Scott Murphy has reversed a four-point deficit and now leads Republican Jim Tedisco by 4 points, according to the latest poll from the Siena Research Institute.

Murphy now leads Tedisco 47-43 percent, with 7 percent undecided and 2 percent for Eric Sundwall, who was removed from the ballot this week. This is within the poll’s +/- 3.2 percent margin of error.

Two weeks ago, Tedisco led 45-41 percent.

I still think given the nature of the district, Tedisco will win on Tuesday and succeed now Senator Gillibrand but it's going to be a near run thing.

1 I hope Tedisco wins but voters seem to be cutting off their noses to spite their face all over.

They think that Tedisco's chances just went up because the Libertarian candidate, currently polling around 2%, just exited the race.

3 What brought about the swing towards Murphy? Was it because Obama and Biden endorsed him? If so, hopefully it is just a temporary blip.

4 Tedisco has lost 16 points in a week, or something. He's not looking good for Tuesday. He was up 12 at one point.

I do not believe ANY poll except election day and even then with the fraud that goes on it is not the true feelings of the electorate. In addition, despite what the liars in the media say this is NOT a “Republican District”.  It has been gerrymandered to blend in more liberals by “stretching it” to the South to get more NYC flavor in it.

It used to be all upstate NY and a lot more conservative but there is a reason why the Dems took it. Given that unless the Obaminites start a hard campaign there with him actually campaigning I predict the Repubs will take it.

6 ACORN is probably frauding the results.

7 I grew up in the district, and never did I think that Gillibrand - no matter how much she tailored herself to the district - would blow Treadwell out by 24 points in '08.  There are too many liberals moving into the areas outside of Albany - the north end of the 20th - and into the southern end of the district.  On top of that, people in the section where I grew up are extremely reactionary, tending towards populism on economic issues.  While they might be angry that Obama is spending money on financial bailouts, they probably embrace the spending package and the budget if they are told it contains public works money.  There is a heavy skepticism of the conservative committment to smaller government, and I suppose if they want a party spending the money, they want the Democrats.  While they are more abusive of tax funds, they do know how to make it sound like they are doing you every favor while raping your pocket.

8 I used to live in Saratoga Springs back in the early 70s and other than Skidmore, it was fairly conservative (for NY).

The reasons NY 20 is such a large geographical district isn't to weaken Repbulican influence, it's because the state Senate and Pataki were Republicans who created it after the 2000 census. NY lost to House seats after reapportionment and this was how they saved a Republican seat.

Tedisco is running so weakly because he's run an awful campaign. He started out way to negative (and so did the RNC and the other national groups) and the idiotic vacillating on how he would have voted on the 'stimulus' gave Murphy something to talk about.

Tedisco spent the first month explaing his 'I probably would have voted for it if my amendments had passed' which was total BS. Murphy was talking about 'creating jobs' witht the 'stimulus', which was total BS but it sounded better than Tedisco's defensive, process oriented BS.

They should have run John Faso.  He would have said, 'no, the 'stimulus' sucks, here's how you create jobs....' and run on the conservative catachism. He'd be killing Murphy.

You may be right there but it sure looks different now than in did in the 70s. I don't believe it stretched down to NYC then. If the Repubs created this distrcit they sure were crazy.

I’ll go out on another limb here and say if the Republicans do NOT take this seat it will be the end of the line for Steele. Add to that a prediction that if the Repubs lose it it will be another nail in the coffin of the party.

14 I don't believe it stretched down to NYC then
Posted by: Vic at March 27, 2009 10:31 AM (f6os6)

Just to be clear. It doesn't go there now either. It goes down through the northern part of Dutches County, which is well north of the traditional NYC 'suburban' area. Now it might be considered exurban but it's by no means 'NYC'.

That said, that's only a part of the district. The north country counties as well as Greene, Delaware and Otsego are very rural and strongly Republican.

16 I heard yesterday that Murphy was basically running a campaign against Rush Limbaugh in order to turn out the Democratic base.  Too bad Tedisco can't respond by pointing out that while Murphy claims he would make a better legislator than radio personality Rush Limbaugh, he hasn't really offered any specifics to back that claim up.  Then roll out a detailed 10 point summary of why Tedisco would make a better legislator than, say, 80's sitcom character Jack Tripper, since apparently the Dems want to run against media figures that are not even in the race.

Posted by: Deety at March 27, 2009 10:54 AM (1jglO)

17

There is nothing about the timing to question... it is a rigged poll designed to influence the election at the last minute.  Ho hum, just SOP since we allowed ACORN to manage our elections for the Democrats.  I question why we even bother having elections... of course that is exactly the hopelessness that this strategy is designed to foster.

I hope pretty soon it starts fostering real anger among real, living, American citizens.

25 If the GOP had any will, they would be watching the voting closely for this one.

I wouldn't be surprised if all the Disney characters, the cast of Star Trek, and the deceased from all of the graveyards in town, came out to vote. Twice. Democrat.

After what probably happened in November, ACORN can rig this election without even breaking a sweat.

26 Posted by: Techie at March 27, 2009 11:10 AM (QYuCD)

Then you are of course correct but history is a bit longer than that.

Republicans were plentiful in the Northeast up until the mid to late 80's. Now they weren't hardcore, movement conservatives and some of them were down right left wing liberals (hello Lowell Wicker and Jacob Javitz!) but on the whole it was possible to find a guy like Al D'Amato from NY until about a decade ago. NJ had at least one Republican Senator from 43-79 and so did MA from more or less the same time.

There were also plenty of Republican House members as well.

As the parties have become more polarized and there's been a realignment things have obviously changed. At 25 you can't also remember a time when the deep south was all Democratic and it wasn't that long ago.

Things haven't always been as they are and in the grand scheme of things, they won't be for much longer. It's just the way it is.

One thing about that article, the Albany Times Useless is a little to the left of the NY Times and half as accurate.

When Spitzer was getting in trouble for siccing NY State Police on his political rivals, that paper did not cover it. They were too busy making stuff up about his political rivals.

So they're about as accurate as UN climate modeling software.

29 Oh, I remember enough about the South (where I'm actually from) and know enough history to know about The Solid South.  My home state (GA) had 138 years of unbroken Democrat governors, up until 2002.

What I just can't see is how the two parties switched places seemingly so totally.

You didn't say 'are' in your first post. Not in your lifetime but 25 years isn't all that long. We can debate whether or not it was a 'stronghold' or not (I think there's a case to be made it was) but Republicans  had certainly had a 'stronghold' in those states at a point not all that long before you lifetime and certainly within the memory of most people.

Again, there weren't 'Republicans' or 'Conservatives' in the sense you are used to but that's what they were.

Posted by: DrewM. at March 27, 2009 11:33 AM (hlYel)

31

From an economic standpoint they have Not switched sides so much as the Republicans have just moved to the left. The Democraps absorbed the socialist stance from the “progressives” that came up under William Jennings Bryant. The South loved all of that just as well as the North. The only difference was that the Southern Dems were rabid anti-union and anti-black.

Take that from someone who grew up in GA in the 50s and has lived all over the country.

Posted by: Vic at March 27, 2009 11:33 AM (f6os6)

32 What I just can't see is how the two parties switched places seemingly so totally.

At the risk of starting a fight I really don't want to have...civil rights.

Southern Democrats were the ones who killed or tried to kill the civil rights legislation of the 60's. Republicans are actually the ones who provided the margin to pass a lot of it (including a young George H.W. Bush as a Congressman from the Houston area).

Remember the Law of Liberal Media Polls:

When they say the Democrat is narrowly ahead, it's actually too close to call.

When they say it is too close to call, it's actually a narrow Republican lead.

When they say it is a narrow Republican lead, it's a Republican landslide.

I have seen this pattern all too often. Take it to the bank.

36 I'm aware of what the Left accused Nixon of (the "Southern Strategy"), but I don't see how any of it is practical or even realistic.  What did the Republicans actually roll back to get the support of all us vicious racists born after the mid-60s?  We've still got to get Washington approval to move one polling site to a new location back where my parents vote.

(My sneaking suspicion is the economic downturn of the industrial North and the formation of the "Rust Belt".  Conversely, the South moved away from big-government economics after moving beyond the need for things like the TVA and other Southern industrialization projects)

Posted by: Techie at March 27, 2009 11:43 AM (QYuCD)

38 Don't forget that there's been a significant out-migration from the Northeast. I'm from the Albany area originally, which used to be Democrat island in a Republican sea. Upstate NY has swung more Democrat as the good jobs -- and sensible people -- have left, heading towards the better economic climate in the South and West. Judging from my facebook friends from high school (class of 1992), maybe 1/3 of them are still in NY and maybe a little more than half are still in northeast. Upstate has become more and more dependent on the government.

The so-called “Richard Nixon Southern Strategy” is a myth created by the Dems. As Drew said, the Republicans had more to do with passing civil rights legislation than the Dems did so if voting in anti-race people were the key then they would not have voted Republican in most cases.

One other thing to keep in mind was that in things other than foreign policy, Richard Nixon was very liberal. Nixon won the South not based on race issues but based on the fact that the Dems were turning into the anti-war, anti-military idiots that now permeate the party.

See if you can find a copy of the infamous “girl picking daisy petals” commercial that the Dems used to beat Barry Goldwater. You’ll get a flavor for that time and the Dems. And if it is one thing that the South ha ALLWAYS been it has been pro-military.

Re: Party shift in NE

I'm not a political scientist nor do I play one on TV. And I haven't stayed in a Holiday Inn Express in quite some time. But paying attention over the past 4 generations leads me to believe that the heavily urban NE along with the heavily urban west coast started trending D, with a little lag time  built in, along the same time that the Great Society of the mid to late '60's started pumping free money into urban areas. The underclass became way more politically active due to a need to keep the titties primed and pumping, and the political class leaches gained a monetary interest in promoting "social justice". Those two constituencies make up a very significant sector of today's democratic party. I think Hubert Humphrey would be aghast at the state of today's democratic party.

It's not a secret to me as to why the county by county red/blue map is extremely blue along major ports and inland waterways. That's where the people live who have been conditioned to count on the govt tit for their sustenance.
