The problem is NOT men failing to approach women and make a move.

The problem, as I've blogged about and as many others have as well, is that women have changed preferences. Wealth, anonymity, cheap and reliable contraception, allow women to share a few Alpha type men, who make "SUPERIOR" moves to the beta type guys.

Beta guys do make moves all the time. Her blogginheads.tv partner Wright even acknowledges the generational differences, a blind date with a walk-by viewing for both parties.

THAT my friends is gone. As dated as an eight-track cassette and an AMC Gremlin.

The problem with Beta guys is that they make moves that don't work, because they are Beta. In order for a move to work, it has to be consistent with a woman's image of the guy as a dominant, highly testosterone charged Alpha male.

Which means before the move is made, the image must be firmly planted that the man making the move is indeed socially dominant and highly testosterone charged. A Beta and Alpha guy can make the same move and the Beta guy will always fail, because he is seen as Beta and therefore less desirable. While the move itself is important, it's the context of the move: if a woman sees a guy as Alpha or Beta-boy, that matters. Women will forgive (on average) pretty much anything an Alpha guy does (see John Edwards, Chris Brown, etc.) but never a Beta guy.

Women meet their own needs for pretty much everything but excitement and stimulation, so the wealth, anonymity, and contraceptive power allows women the luxury of choosing men solely on excitement and stimulation and the roller-coaster effect of testosterone dominance.

Althouse, as a woman, makes the mistake of not acknowledging the real motivating factor behind the success and failure of men's pursuits. To the extent that Beta guys don't make moves, they don't make them knowing very well that the move is doomed to failure, because of their status, proven by past failure after failure, and observed success of Alpha guys with women. It's like a man saying men value women for personality and charm, rather than T&A.

Althouse is pretty useful however. Her rate of being wrong approaches nearly 100%, so her take on anything is a useful guide to figuring obscure issues out, since odds are strong that her position whatever it is, is usually wrong (and driven by Yuppie Status Striving more than anything else).

Seriously, I hate this allahpunditesque alpha/beta shit. At the least, you are grossly misusing these terms.

The way you're using alpha and beta is as it applies to fucking animals. These terms are meant to reflect social status. Only animals have unyielding correlation between social rank and sex. Even then, only pack animals. Not monagamous animals or solitary ones.

Human beings are exception, not just animals, and their desires and habits cannot be reduced to an analysis of animalistic urges.

Furthermore, even this analysis is half-assed. There is only 1 alpha male per social group. It is not an 'either or' thing. You are not one or the other. If 2 alpha males meet, 1 becomes beta. If an alpha is eaten by a predator or falls down a cliff, a beta becomes alpha. It's a continuum, not a dichotomy, and usually a dynamic one subject to constant change.

As the terms alpha and beta are supposed to apply to people, you've got them buttfuck backwards. A 'type A personality' is an uptight, controlling overachiever who wears a watch and is punctual and organized. Powerful and dominant - sometimes, yes, Wall Street CEO's, sometimes no - anal OCD accountants.

A dude who's 'exciting', drives a bike, plays in a rock band, nails a different chick every night - is a type B.

Besides the 'bigotry of low expectations' comparing our society to animal social structure, and our sexual behaviors, the whole thing is more then slightly Brave New Worldish. Alpha and beta?
