Special Guest Post by Peggy Noonan at Slublog

It was nice to have her in the live blog, but she's firstly an essayist.

t is late March, and yet still feels like the deepest part of winter. The earth warms and the days grow longer, but the hearts and souls of Americans continue to feel the chill of our times; the feeling that Shakespeare so beautifully termed the winter of discontent.

As I travel from my townhouse in Virginia to my beach house in Nantucket, I sense an unease plaguing the American people. A malaise, if you will. The president's steely gaze and direct, simple solutions to this country's problems cut through that ill-will and helped reassure the bleating masses, showing them someone was in charge.

...

When asked about whether his budget would increase the deficit, Obama shifted blame masterfully. It was like watching Mozart not only compose a symphony, but play all of the instruments himself. While conducting. There are those who claim that the president is overexposed, but I cannot get enough of that rich velvety voice. It's like being washed with pinot grigio. French pinot, of course. Only a monstrous, embarrassing hick from a backwater state such as Alaska would go with something from Napa, or worse, Australia.

She's got a gift.

http://tinyurl.com/2tulxh

These are the two great issues, the economic crisis and our safety. In the face of them, what strikes one is the weightlessness of the Obama administration, the jumping from issue to issue and venue to venue from day to day. Isaiah Berlin famously suggested a leader is a fox or a hedgehog. The fox knows many things but the hedgehog knows one big thing. In political leadership the hedgehog has certain significant advantages, focus and clarity of vision among them. Most presidents are one or the other. So far Mr. Obama seems neither.

55 Even the AP is noticing TP One:

Analysis: Teleprompter telegraphs Obama caution

Posted by: TP One at March 24, 2009 10:15 PM (5r0Tz)

56 Shocking....the AP poons Obama hard on using me, and why does the AP think that "reporters don't signal their intentions" re questions? Of course we knew all the questions beforehand.

"At the same time, the rest of us can't afford to demonize every investor or entrepreneur who seeks to make a profit. That drive is what has always fueled our prosperity, and it is what will ultimately get these banks lending and our economy moving once more," he said.

It was a carefully modulated statement, and Obama — relying on a familiar crutch — read it off a flat-screen monitor perched at the back of the East Room.

The teleprompter was no help during the question-and-answer session (reporters don't signal their intentions), but Obama was no less careful during that give and take.

Asked why people should trust government with the regulatory authority to take over failing financial companies such as troubled insurer American International Group Inc., Obama passed on the chance to demonize Washington.

"Keep in mind, it is precisely because of the lack of this authority that the AIG situation has gotten worse," Obama said. He then gave a scholarly explanation of how the proposal would work.

Pressed again, Obama cited the Federal Deposit Insurance Corporation's handling of the IndyMac Bank as an example of government properly using its authority.

The government did something right? That's news to most Americans.

Still, it's hard to criticize Obama's communication skills or tactics. Polls show that while the public has turned against Washington and Wall Street, the president's ratings remain steady.

He has aggressively delivered his cautious message — through town halls, talk shows, travel and, yes, prime-time news conferences. His message: Stick with me and my $3.6 trillion budget.

"This is a big ocean liner, it's not a speedboat. It doesn't turn around immediately," he said Tuesday night. "But we're in a better, better place because of the decisions that we made."

Calm. Cool. Careful.

One of the few times he summoned raw emotion came after a reporter demanded to know why it took him so long to express outrage over the AIG executive bonuses.

"It took a couple of days because I like to know what I'm talking about before I speak."

Even better, he likes to have it up on the teleprompter.

THE CLAIM: Responding to Republican critics in Congress who say his proposed budget carries an irresponsible deficit, Obama said, "I suspect that some of those Republican critics have a short memory, because, as I recall, I'm inheriting a $1.3 trillion deficit, annual deficit, from them."

FACT: Obama inherited a whopper of a deficit, much of it due to policies and spending led by Republican President George W. Bush. But the Congress, which authorizes spending and is not blameless in driving up deficits, was controlled by Democrats in the last two years of Bush's presidency.

Seriously.

I was and in a lot of ways have always been a Peggy Noonan fan. I heard from a former secret serviceman  Pat Buchanan tried to get her fired from Reagan's speechwriting staff because she would show up in sandals and was  "beneath the dress code", Reagan laughed and said, "She stays".

But her leap of faith for Obama because McCain picked Palin troubles me to no end- does she not remember Reagan? The Stoopid actor who worked monkeys that lucked into California's governorship, the supposed dimwit who brought her to the  big leagues? If it weren't for Ronaldus Maximus, where would she be?

I am looking for a strong and severe mea culpa from her.  A lot of the ingrained "we know best" crowd screwed up with this juvenile president, so she can be forgiven if she sees the light... she needs to come out strong for what she used to claim to believe in (which if she had any intellectual honesty, is what Sarah Palin works for every day).

93 Question by a reader to Jonah Goldberg on NRO

Jonah; I have never seen this point made:  all of Europe, which has nationalized health care already, is also experiencing the current economic crisis.  Why does Obama believe that bringing national health care here will in any way save us a similar economic crisis in the future?  He keeps repeating that only if we get health care costs under control will we have “real” prosperity, but the countries that have already “tackled” this problem in the past were not spared their own economic meltdowns.

The translation of Compton's race question is: Since you are the first black president, when one of your white aids do not agree with you, have you busted out the race card yet, or are you saving that for an actual conservative?

OT there was some question about this:

  Friday, March 20, 2009

This week, the Department of Defense (DoD) informed NRA-ILA that fired military small arms cartridge cases are once again eligible for sale, following a temporary suspension in such sales instituted last week.  NRA-ILA began discussions with DoD shortly after the suspension took effect, and we were assured from the beginning that efforts were underway to resolve the issue favorably.

Okay, I tried to listen to the obscure "80's song on the sidebar, was totally disgusted until I recognized it-

And it all came back to me, ME waering parachute pants, cheap ass shades with a big ass Goody comb in the back pocket trying figure out why the local record store didn't have the Sherb's in stock (probably because they thought ahead and only stamped out 60 or so albums).

That said, that image is fresh in my memory... I will try to refrain from opening a vein. They were that bad.

104 It's getting weirder.   Even a usually glowing, loving San Francisco newspaper is asking the key question: "Obama Presser:  Was it worth postponing American Idol for This?"

Oh, oh.   When each coast is asking questions slamming you on important issues like your popularity (Boston Herald) and now whether or not you're exciting enough to bump Idol you have to wonder how long this sham can hold.

It's like being washed with pinot grigio. French pinot, of course. Only a monstrous, embarrassing hick from a backwater state such as Alaska would go with something from Napa, or worse, Australia.

WTF!  Didn't this Peggy-Poster know that Noonan would only go for Pinot Grigio from Italy?  Notwithstanding the fact that there's some fine Pinot Grigio coming out of both Napa and Oregon--even Peggy would know that French Pinot either doesn't exist or got filtered through Sarkozy's kidneys before being put in a bottle.

But the Peggy-Poster who wrote this  has her general tone down pretty well.  And what the hey since she's so busy slobbering over Obama, she just might go for some of Sarkozy's recycled wine.  Give her a thrill and all.

really, you think about history and say how the fuck did people allow hitler or >insert dictator's name here< to rise to power. What the fuck was wrong with the germans in the 1930's, or the Russians, or the cubans. This is a front row seat to insanity, we get to see just how the fuck a republic dies.
