| Elections Have Consequences*...EPA Set To Regulate Just About Everything In The Name Of So-Called "Global Warming"The Environmental Protection Agency sent a proposal to the White House on Friday finding that global warming is endangering the public's health and welfare, according to several sources, a move that could have far-reaching implications for the nation's economy and environment. ..."This is historic news," said Frank O'Donnell, who heads the public watchdog group Clean Air Watch. "It will set the stage for the first-ever national limits on global warming pollution. And it is likely to help light a fire under Congress to get moving." But business groups decried the move as an economic disaster. "By moving forward with the endangerment finding on greenhouse gases, EPA is putting in motion a set of decisions that may have far-reaching unintended consequences," said Bill Kovacs, vice president of environment, technology and regulatory affairs at the U.S. Chamber of Commerce. "Specifically, once the finding is made, no matter how limited, some environmental groups will sue to make sure it is applied to all aspects of the Clean Air Act. "This will mean that all infrastructure projects, including those under the president's stimulus initiative, will be subject to environmental review for greenhouse gases. Since not one of the projects has been subjected to that review, it is possible that the projects under the stimulus initiative will cease. This will be devastating to the economy."Once again the giant shiny thing in the sky could not be reached for comment about the Earth's temperature. Obama said he was getting politics out of science. Unfortunately he's simply replacing it with blind faith since the data surely doesn't support his 'scientific' positions. The Chamber of Commerce guy is undoubtedly right, enviros will use this finding to tie anything they don't like up in the courts for a good long time. Aside from delays and costs, it will simply mean a great deal of normal activity will not be a matter for free people to decide individually or through their elected representatives but rather in courts. What could go wrong? *In fairness, I'm not absolutely convinced a President McCain wouldn't have done the same thing. I guess in this case 'elections' includes primaries. Comments1

I cannot be the only one that sees this as a good thing.
Finally we will be forced to have a real airing of the data, since that sort of economic dead weight will not be swallowed lightly by the public. This spells the end of the AGW faith. Worst case: Restrictions are passed and the economy suffers even more that it otherwise would under Obama's Socialist programs. Upside: Guaranteed 2010 transition of power. Now we need to be sure we are putting forward the best candidates (and that does NOT mean the mythical "most likely to win" candidates). Posted by: krakatoa at March 23, 2009 01:24 PM (/FUhT) 9

That's it, since my congressman is Fuckhead Murtha, there's no way in hell I would get this done, but if anybody has a conservative representative, it's time for drastic measure. Ask them to propose a bill stating that anybody who believes in manmade global cooling warming climate change must immediately stop producing CO2 or else be found as guilty as any corporation of pollution and punished to the fullest extent of the law. This idiocy must be shown for what it is.

As they point out, it is one very big “O.” Know any politicians whose name starts with “O”? “The Obama ‘O’ logo helped brand the then-senator on the campaign trail, and now Mode Project, the same Chicago firm that had a hand in that design, has returned to help him brand the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act,” the LA Times writes. And there are eight stars in the top left quadrant . . . “If I were to take a guess, it might be one star for every year Obama will be in power -- but maybe that's just being optimistic,” said Armin Vit, a New York-based graphic designer who, according the newspaper, “specializes in corporate rebranding.” Posted by: Anti-Harkonnen Freedom Fighter at March 23, 2009 01:27 PM (5r0Tz) 13

see, this is the problem with the stimulus bill. the govt. gives money to a state to build X (new school, new road or bridge). But alas, there is carbon dioxide present which slows up the entire process & demands that millions more be spent to eliminate that awful old carbon dioxide which we exhale every second. so now the state has a 1/2 finished X (new school, new road or whatever). so now the state has to finish the project. the tax payers pay twice. cap 'n trade under a different guise Posted by: kelley in virginia at March 23, 2009 01:34 PM (g568/) 25

So, let's see ... Congress mandates that state and local governments spend a trillion dollars on bullshit make-work projects in order to get the economy moving again. At the same time, an agency mandated by Congress is gearing up to sue the shit out of any other government agency that does anything that in any way, shape, or form emits CO2 into the atmosphere. So, Congress both spends stimulus money, and spends more money to ensure that nothing gets done. It reminds me of one of those elaborate machines that were so popular with avant garde artists in the 1950s: they'd turn the thing on, and the wheels would spin, and the gears would turn, and it would tear itself to pieces. I always ask these questions of the "climate change" alarmists, and I never get a good answer back.
1. Why is global warming (assuming that it is indeed happeneing) a bad thing? Has the earth been warmer in the past? If so, then what is the "correct" temperature? If you don't know, then how will we know when the "problem" is "solved"? Do we have the technology to reverse the warming of the earth, even assuming that future emissions are reduced? 2. If the two biggest future emitters of carbon into the earth's atmosphere are India and China, how will passing laws in the United States (and applicable only in the United States) offset the increasing emissions from China and India? 3. If it is an axiom that a nation's GDP is closely tied to it's use of energy (either directly or indirectly), then how will the inevitable reduction in energy inputs and outputs under most environmental schemes be offset by "new technologies"? Are these "new technologies" able to fully replace the burning of fossil fuels as a source of energy? If not, is it the position of the global-warming clique that a smaller global economy is an acceptable trade-off for reduced carbon emissions? 4. Given the relatively short baseline and questionable accuracy of monitoring data, isn't it possible that the data has been misinterpreted? There is obviously political bias at play (both pro and con), so wouldn't the prudent course of action be to establish a longer and more accurate baseline before committing to national policy goals? Posted by: Monty at March 23, 2009 01:50 PM (/0a60) 45

Now the left says whatever the fuck they want and all kinds of stupid people actually believe their bullshit that the same party pushing through ridiculous spending, inevitably higher taxes, excessive regulation including environmental ones and changes the rules whenever they feel like is actually the party that can lead to economic growth and prosperity. The next big scare is getting prepped Global static electricity cause by the sun One big Solar Flare Will wipe out the power grid. (NewScientist) And the important piece: Man is the cause of letting it happen. Or, my tin foil hat, this is the cover story for an EMP event? Over the last few decades, western civilisations have busily sown the seeds of their own destruction. Our modern way of life, with its reliance on technology, has unwittingly exposed us to an extraordinary danger: plasma balls spewed from the surface of the sun could wipe out our power grids, with catastrophic consequences. The projections of just how catastrophic make chilling reading. "We're moving closer and closer to the edge of a possible disaster," says Daniel Baker, a space weather expert based at the University of Colorado in Boulder, and chair of the NAS committee responsible for the report.
Or they need something to replace AGW as a catastrophe that demands the extraction of trillions in taxpayer reparations. Posted by: Cromagnum at March 23, 2009 03:55 PM (iVVqW) 85

Cap and trade will make nearly all modern ways of heating your home more expensive. The oil and natural gas peaks of last year already have more and more people heating with wood, coal, and pellet stoves. Now the EPA will tell you it is illegal to do so. Posted by: kidney, currently buying stock in sweater companies at March 23, 2009 04:05 PM (FgUFX) 87
Possession of a unlicensed bag of charcoal or unlicensed backyard grill will result in being charged as a "climate criminal".
FIFY The "privilege" of grilling will cost you $1000/yr. Of course, you willing to pay this because the "privilege" of heating your home will have already chewed up any discretionary income you might still possess. Why doesn't the EPA just bomb us back to the Stone Age? Great way to use uo all those icky bomb thingies, and reduce our carbon footprint. Posted by: PJ at March 23, 2009 04:27 PM (oUBw8) 90
This is why I only burn tractor tires at night, it's much more difficult to see the smoke. Plus, they put off enough radiant heat to cook a steak from 20 feet away, removing any possibility of the unpleasant taste associated with cooking a steak above the tractor tire fire. Its a win/win! Better performance that I've always wanted. And EPA won't catch me - since I do all the maintenance on the bike. And shit like this pisses me off and gives me a fevah that only a spewing column of pollution from my exhaust can fix! Posted by: HondaV65 at March 23, 2009 07:51 PM (9vlDt) 101

No need to worry the brewers will just buy some credits and voila!, you can still have bubbles in your beer. Of course, they'll be jacking up the price, so you'll have to cut your consumption. At what point do we dispense with the term "unintended consequences" with regard to describing the policies of this president? This man is pursuing these policies for precisely the intent of creating a total economic and social collapse of the American ideal and our way of life.

I really don't care what kind of commotion it will cause in congress or in the courts, it a realization that you people who are disagreeing with the EPA need to realize. Being an envronmental engineer I see what we are doing to our planet and it needs to stop no matter what the consequences, think of you children for christ sakes, and stop being so selfish for 5 minutes. We are killing our forests, we can't even see more then 10 miles at some of our most aesthetic national beauties (especially in the east) and we're adding more and more species the endangered species act every month. I'm would consider myself an environmentalist and the data is out there to prove global warming, its just the opposing idiots who find conclusive (bullshit) evidence against it. I would like my children to have a good quality of life and its our job to give it to them....use your heads people, it does no good to have your eyes open and not see whats in plain sight.
