Foreign Policy Gaffe Machine Strikes Again; Obama Sends Note to Chirac Pledging Friendship, Working Relationship

Update: I agree with the commenters who think that Obama was just being cozy with Chirac, and hadn't actually forgotten who the President of France was. At the same time, this is a clear snub to Sarkozy and his pro-War on Terror policies (or at least, more pro-WOT than his predecessor). It's also slightly ridiculous for Bambi to claim to be looking forward to working with an out-of-power French leader, especially when he has made no visible effort to work with France's current one.

Original Post:
The actual President of France, Nicolas Sarkozy, who has been trying for months to get a sit-down with President Obama is not amused.

Le Figaro reports (Warning: French) that Obama sent the former leader of France a "very nice" letter, which included this idiotic comment:

"I am certain that we will be able to work together, in the coming four years, in a spirit of peace and friendship to build a safer world."

That sound you hear is me banging my head on the desk because I just don't know what to say. I mean, WHAT THE FUCK?!?!

Is this snub revenge for Sarkozy calling Obama's foreign policy "utterly immature" during the campaign?

Making a List:

1. Canada: NAFTA fiasco.
2. Poland: missile shield "misunderstanding".
3. UK: Churchhill bust return.
4. Russia: "overcharge" button.
5. UK: insulting gifts to the Browns.
6. France: not realizing that Chirac has been out of power for two years.

What am I missing? Helpful commenters reminding me:

7. Brazil: Misspelling the president's name.
8. Mexico: NAFTA

My take is not that Obama or anyone still thinks Chirac is the French Prime Minister -- so it's not a super-waterhead gaffe -- it's just that when Obama wants to compose a letter to France, he writes the letter to the out-of-power sympathetic lefty Chirac while blowing off Sarkozy. It's almost a "Gee, my administration wishes your administration was still running things over there instead of that A-hole Sarkozy so we'll work with you on your pet projects instead if you want" kind of missive. Pretty strange though. I take it back. I don't know what to think of it.

I read the 60 Min. int., and I can't believe that, when asked if there is a limit to spending, he actually answered that there isn't a limit to spending, but to credit!  Then went on about how great the dollar is and that we can borrowed as much as we want!!

Insult and start a fight with ALL of our traditional allies and countries who have been supportive of us.

 

Attempt to cozy up to countries that hate us or who have opposed us.

 

I too thought it would be like Carter but congress, even though it was controlled by Dems, did manage to put some breaks on Carter and Carter was not a big spender. He put the breaks on congress for that. (He held the record for vetoing spending bills).

No matter what happened this does not reflect well on Obama.

A.  He seriously doesn't know Chirac is not longer French president.  The problem with that is obvious.

B.  He decided to engage Chirac before the actual president, insulting a guy who happens to be the most pro-US French leader since Louis XVI.

C.  He was replying to Chirac which is only slightly less bad than B.

Also #183 di butler.  Chirac is not anti-war, he was anti-Iraq War.  Off the top of my head Chirac supported the Kosovo War, Afghanistan, and the French intervention in the Ivory Coast civil war in 2002 (largely ignored due to the Iraq issue at the time).  I'm sure if I looked it up he was involved in many other conflicts.

Go to the original GatewayPundit link, and about 60 comments in is one from a French-fluent commenter who went to the original LeFigaro.fr site.  He claimed Obie's letter to Chirac was *in response* to one the Chirac Foundation sent to Obie (content undisclosed).

Can't verify that, but if true it would put the entire thing in a different light:  "I look forward to working with you for the next 4 years for world peace" would seem an entirely reasonable response.

The commenter (sorry for no link) seemed to be rational and non-ideological, thus less likely to be a Dem-talking-points parrot.

But even if this turns out to be true, the fact that Obie would write the crooked socialist Chirac before contacting the current president of France is bad enough!  And the fact that so many people find the alleged faux pas entirely consistent with Obie's style and (in)competence level speaks volumes.
