Isn’t it funny that he called the bill yesterday an unconstitutional bill of attainder. I saw one other republican yesterday who said that as well. Most of the scholarly lawyer types say that it isn’t based on previous rulings of the SCOTUS. Of course that is liberal Stare Decisis. Particularly since the last case (Nixon) partially reversed a previous case just so they could “get tricky dick).
A plain English language reading of the constitution says that this is a bill of attainder and I have a feeling if this does make it to court since the court is more conservative now we may be in for a reversal. That speech should be framed. Kudos Rep. McCotter.
Further, he's putting on record the fact that the track-covering is proceeding to make an Unconstitutional law that will surely be overturned which again shows the spinelessness of the Donk-controlled Congress. Those who support this CYA legislation are booting to the Judiciary that which they know is against the law only to give them time to escape criticism and job-risk now. Those who continue with this dishonest charade should be impeached for negligence if not outright fraud. Alas, it won't happen. That is the bar to which Congress has lowered itself and the degree to which the electorate has sunk. We're repeatedly fucked and keep handing so many of these incumbent hacks the KY in the form of campaign money and votes. Posted by: AnonymousDrivel at March 20, 2009 02:58 PM (swuwV) 49

He was on Greg Gutfield's Red Eye a couple weeks ago and was amazing, articulate, and HILARIOUS (a dry, irreverant wit). He was on again last night and more of the same. Try to find the clips on the Red Eye site - they are worth every minute. This is how he stated our basic values (thye just rolled off his tongue while he was talking on Red Eye), as conservatives, classical liberals or libertarians (I have it posted on my wall at work, just to make a few heads explode):
1. Our liberty is from God, not government; 2. Our sovereignty is in our souls, not the soil; 3. Our security is through strength, not surrender; 4. Our prosperity is from the private sector, not the public sector; 5. Our truths are self-evident, not relative.
Finding him in the congress has given me hope. I hope great things are in store for him. Posted by: Ginger at March 20, 2009 03:16 PM (mFy2u) 59

Hell freaking yeah! Great to see my Congressman getting some well deserved pub. This guy was the only reason I was excited to get to the polls last November, to re-elect him to office.
It states that he is Livonia Wayne, but he also represents at least Garden City and Westland as well. (I'm in Garden City). The only thing(s) I haven't liked from him lately were his support for the Big 3 bailouts instead of bankruptcy and his statement here about "greedy wall street" or whatever it was. With the former, I am guessing he just has to take that position given the constituency. But with regard to the latter, we're *all* 'greedy', it's not like Wall Streeters are the only ones. Almost everyone is working to try to earn more money, cut corners any way they can to avoid having to pay certain things, and are always looking for ways to get a bigger house, bigger car and more techno gadgets. It's the way of America. I tire of the bashing of wall street as "greedy", especially from politicians, who are probably the most corrupt, powerhungry and greedy bastards in the nation. McCotter: How to Speak Democrat
Posted by: Michael in MI at March 20, 2009 03:25 PM (rJ83z) 65
McCotter is an odd dude. He has a lot of autoworkers in his district, so he does pander to them a bit (meaning he wanders off the reservation every once in a while). He is articulate, though.
My issue with this li'l speech is that he starts from the premise that payment of the bonuses was wrong. Edward Liddy's testimony before Congress yesterday revealed that the bonuses were retention bonuses - i.e., delayed compensation for people who agreed to stay on a sinking ship until their positions were terminated. The "bonused" employees did their jobs, reduced AIG and American taxpayer exposure by $1.1 trillion dollars, and were entitled to be paid. All the rights and duties under the basic law of contract were honored. These payments were owed and there is no basis to dishonor that obligation. The House bill not only attempts to recoup the paid bonuses from their recipients (unconstitutionally, I believe, although I have not read the bill for any nuanced distinction between being a penalty or a regulatory action), but it shreds the integrity of a contract that one side has fully performed. American business is founded upon the freedom to contract, and until now, the only the parties themselves or a court could restructure the terms of a contract. Now, by legislative fiat, Congress is rewriting the terms of a contract that one side has fully performed and who is owed return performance, and is rewriting it to Congress' perceived advantage. To avoid an embarrassment, the legislative branch is trying to expand its authority so as to cover its own mistakes. I don't know what the repercussions of Congress' move will be, but if the recoupment bill is not slapped down hard, it's an ominous harbinger of things to come. I didn't catch that A'Man - thanks for posting it. Most of us who read Ace do so because we like an accomplished smart ass. McCotter fits right in. As much as many of us had hopes for Palin, I don't think "our side" is as prone to drink the My Savior Koolaid as the moonbats. We admired her authenticity but weren't surprised when she showed up with a real life. In the first video w/ McCotter he was gracious towards Obama and lectured that the Prez deserves a honeymoon. That annoyed me - because too much of a honeymoon and that list MCcOT goes on to so eloquently recite will be a distant dream. Obama knows exactly what the hell he is doing and we can't waste time tucking him in o his honeymoon. So, I was aware immediately that Mccotter isn't perfect. He's still a pol. ....but a refreshing one. Posted by: Ginger at March 20, 2009 03:38 PM (mFy2u) 69
Thanks, all for the McCotter links. I'd never even heard of him before. But, as someone above said, he's clean and articulate; he's not overweight; he wears a well-tailored suit. So, even without actually listening to his message, he equals all the best skills Obama brought to the table.
And once you listen to his message; wow. He's actually saying something. And it's good. Probably why he won't get anywhere in the Congressional leadership. (By the way; it's not Steele's fault that this guy isn't in any major leadership position, it's Boehner's. Just to put the blame where it belongs.) Ginger,
Funny thing, I almost sent Ace that particular video when it came out as I thought the moron community would like it as much as I did, how moronic of me! One reason McCotter is so good on RedEye is that Gutfeld is actually a good interviewer and does NOT interrupt him! He lets him make his points, if only Hannity, OReilly and Beck could do that simple thing as well...my number one peeve with those shows. Its a shame that Malkin stopped filling in on the Factor, that woman has star quality and is a great interviewer as well, she was upset (rightly so) over the Geraldo incident and has not returned since. I have been madly in love with Thaddeus McCotter since I heard him on Dennis Miller about 6 months ago. He was smart and articulate and could keep up with Dennis pretty well (which is nothing to sneeze at). I immediately looked him up online and have been a big fan since. I loved the link to the Red Eye Clip - especially the Flock of Seagulls thing. Gotta love a conservative politician, with cogent ideas, an ability to communicate that, flip charts if necessary...and obscure 80's references (a hat tip to "my generation"). There is no-one better in my book in the political arena than this man.
