CBO: Obama's Deficits Much, Much Worse Than Advertised

And this is just the deficits -- nevermind the trillions in guarantees and printed-up money injected into the economy.

President Barack Obama's budget would generate deficits averaging almost $1 trillion a year over the next decade, according to the latest congressional estimates, significantly worse than predicted by the White House just last month.

The Congressional Budget Office figures, obtained by The Associated Press Friday, predict Obama's budget will produce $9.3 trillion worth of red ink over 2010-2019. That's $2.3 trillion worse than the White House predicted in its budget.

Worst of all, CBO says the deficit under Obama's policies would never go below 4 percent of the size of the economy, figures that economists agree are unsustainable. By the end of the decade, the deficit would exceed 5 percent of gross domestic product, a dangerously high level.

The latest figures, even worse than expected by top Democrats, throw a major monkey wrench into efforts to enact Obama's budget, which promises universal health care for all and higher spending for domestic programs like education and research into renewable energy.

The dismal deficit figures, if they prove to be accurate, inevitably raise the prospect that Obama and his allies controlling Congress would have to consider raising taxes after the recession ends or paring back his agenda.

But without referencing the figures, Obama insisted on Friday that his agenda is still on track.

A $1.8 trillion deficit this year alone.

Deteriorating economic conditions will cause the federal deficit to soar past $1.8 trillion this year and leave the nation wallowing in a sea of red ink far deeper than the White House had previously estimated, congressional budget analysts said today.

And we're going to spend a couple or four trillion on universal health care, too, huh?

Thanks to Anti-Harkonen Freedom Fighter Geoff.

Here, here!

I remember dinning with a distinguished researcher before the election who lamented that military spending was eating up the budgets of government agencies that fund research and such.  Now, with all those trillions being spent in such a short time, I wonder how he feels now?

Who am I kidding, he's probably elated!  Despite the upcoming inflation and dollar devaluation, he'll still get his small slice of the government cheese.  It's maddening being around people that are truely intelligent, but still can't grasp basic economic concepts such as not spending more than you have.

Ah, but you fail to see the clever genius behind this plan. By moving to UHC, health care will get SO BAD that Boomers will simply opt out, rather than put up with the third world health care the UK is now enjoying. In doing so they will waive Medicare and, thus forfeit their rights to Social Security payments.

It's a twofer windfall for the fedgov!

37 four trillion on universal health care, too, huh?

That's not even including the 10-year projections of Medicare/Medicaid costs for retiring Boomers.

Doctors I talk to put the figure around, oh, 30 TRILLION DOLLARS, and this just the quasi-socialist program of Medicare operating in a captive, over-regulated market.

But whatever Teleprompter Obama says is I guess today's truth. Tomorrow it will be something different. One thing is now painfully clear - they're in over their heads, they're more concerned about implementing a socialist, leftwing policy agenda and are willing to bankrupt the government for the next several decades to attempt it, and they think the rest of us are all stupid.

At this point, I think the Teleprompter is going to do a better job of stimulating growth in America than the Obama Administration.

50 What an idiot Orzag is:

President Obama’s budget chief, Peter Orszag, is saying he expects new Congressional Budget Office projections that the 10-year deficit will be $1.6 trillion higher than administration estimates will have “no impact” on Obama’s ability to get health care reform, carbon-trading legislation and additional education funding passed this year.

In a conference call with reporters, the Office of Management and Budget director said he expects the budget resolutions put forward in Congress next week will also adopt Obama’s goal of cutting the deficit in half by the end of his first term.

“The fact that there’s some difference in the rate at which OMB and CBO project economic growth or the overall fiscal deficit numbers does not affect those core principles,” Orszag said.

CBO projected 2.2% average economic growth over the 10-year window. The administration and some outside forecasts are predicting 2.6% growth. Orszag stressed that the numbers are unpredictable and volatile. Small adjustments down in growth or up in spending produced outsized changes in the deficit, he said.

However, Orszag acknowledged that the deficits CBO projects would injure the economy. “Deficits in the 5 percent of GDP range would lead to rising debt to GDP ratios that would ultimately be non-sustainable,” he said.

The official CBO estimate puts the deficit at $2.3 trillion more than the White House, but the figure falls to $1.6 trillion in an apples-to-apples comparison that takes account of differences in what spending and revenue is included.

Orszag said economic data which have come in since a January CBO projection have been “somewhat more negative.” However, he said OMB has no plans to update its projections on a rolling basis. “I don’t think it’s constructive for us to be constantly chasing our tails and constantly updating our assumptions,” Orszag said

-Institute a flat tax so everyone bears the cost of government.

-Institute a voucher system to offer competition in the education system.
