| Red on Bloody Red: Dodd Admits He Slipped In Bonus-Permitting Language, But Only on Demand of Obama's Treasury OfficialsAs the Overwhelmed One hasn't filled seventeen of the top 18 slots at Treasury, I'm guessing (but can't be completely sure) that "Treasury officials" refers to Geithner. Update: Video. So not only was Congress in on this, so were the President's men, but now they're going to pose as angry populists outraged about what they themselves did? Yes, that's exactly what they're going to do.Comments1

In reference to the chickens, wouldn't it be great for Obama to invite Wright to give a speech for the press again. Wright making an ass of himself would be a distraction from the AIG bonus distraction, which is a pretty good distraction from Geithner being incompetent, which is a distraction from Obama being completely out of his league.

Dodd's defense is that he intended to put much harsher wording in the clause, but was forced by the powers-that-be to word it so all contractual obligations shall be met. In other words, Dodd is passing the buck and pointing his finger, "He made me do it." Just like the scene in Jaws when the kids were swimming around with the fake shark fin trying to scare people. The AIG executives who benefited from their contractual largess should agree to give-ups, but only when the scumbag executives at Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac also agree to same. What's fair is fair, and the government pricks are no different than the AIG folks. If someone offered you a bonus program for performing your duties, what are you going to say, no thank you, I'm an asshole and don't deserve to be compensated and you're a jerk-off for offering me such a splendid package? Anyone else watching Obama's "townhall" right now?
He's in trouble, and he KNOWS it! He started off by kind of poo-pooing the back-in-forth in Washington over the AIG bonuses (while being careful enough to remind us he's "outraged" too) and then said basically, "Let's get over it, I'm the president, so if you want to blame me, then that's fine." Whoa! While he thinks he can slip it (him and Dodd paying off their AIG benefactors) under the rug, I believe this is an unbelievable opportunity to cripple this presidency right now! The Republicans better pounce all over this--the American people need to know that Obama the Reformer got down and dirty with Dodd on behalf of the very folks he's "outraged" are receiving bonuses.
Oh, and by the way, in response to a coherent question posed by a female banker, Obama strangely said to her, in a lame and no-teleprompter moment, "You don't look like you got a $5M bonus." The crowd, generally supportive, squirmed.

I really hope someone asks this question: Mr. President. You said that there are too many Americans outraged over the AIG bonuses because AIG has been funded by the taxpayer. You said that they actually don't deserve any pay because of the situation they have placed AIG in. I know that most Americans are not happy with Congress, or you Mr. President, for the situation that you have placed AIG in. I also know that Congress' approval rating is actually lower than the perc. of Americans that think AIG should keep the bonuses. Tomorrow, are you going to demand that Congress give up their pay? Are you going to give back yours?

If the report I heard today was true, then Dodd and Obama received the largest campaign contributions from AIG. Normally, I would share the pessimism expressed by another poster above about the MSM covering for Obama. But they can't this time. It's just too big, and Obama helped balloon the story by expressing his "Outrage." This is HUGE people! One of the most delicious ironies of this story is the unknowing contribution of the MSM to Obama's potentially fatal wound. The MSM started off the story thinking they were helping Obama demonize some more Wall Street FatCats having no clue that this story would have the potential to make Obama damaged-goods a mere 2 months into his miserable failure of a presidency. They both went to LAW SCHOOL. Law school is EASY. Law school is where people go when MATH is TOO HARD for them. I respect Medved and he's very smart compared to lawyers and journalists, but that's damning with faint praise. You don't have to think about MIT, think about UMass. Do you think that any PhD student in the math dept. at UMass is going around saying, "Gosh, I can't wrap my mind around that Stare Decisis business, I'm sure glad I'm doing something easy like mathematics instead of having my mind blown by those geniuses at Harvard Law." Even if you think that writing is some evidence of massive intellect (I don't) and believe that Bill Ayers did not have a big hand in writing or rewriting Issues from my Daddy, there is no problem-solving skill involved in law school or advocacy writing. If anything, they are tasked with causing problems and obscuring the truth for their client or cause. It is self-evident that Obama is an imbecile. ParanoidinSeattle,
We're looking at a period of massive inflation if, and only if, the economy gets going at any sort of normal rate of growth. There are several situations that will make that less likely: 1) More government intervention will retard economic growth as it increases uncertainty; 2) There is a significant chance government borrowing will crowd out private borrowing; 3) The debt overhang in the private sector is causing a retrenching of personal spending habits (i.e. higher savings rates); and 4) The fed is running out of options with interest rates near zero. We're still in line for a "Lost Decade" a la the Japanese economy from 1989 to 2004 in which there was ZERO percent GDP growth in Japan. Posted by: Nom de Blog at March 18, 2009 08:05 PM (szcvf) 172

@paranoidinseattle
Help or hurt? The answer depends on if you're a Democrat or Republican in the short term. Dems say that you dump a bunch of money in, something is bound to come out of it- witness the several trillion "invested" in the past few months. Republicans say it's stupid to "invest" money into failure, since money lost is more often than no irrecoverable. Long term- inflation. They have effectively devalued the dollar by 1.2 trillion. The more money there is available, the less it's worth. Everyone knows that, but the Fed and Dems seem to think that inflation issues are preferable to short term cash flow needs. My answer is simple- don't invest in failure; no matter if you are calling it a bailout, loan, Fed cash or whatever. It's like giving your crackhead cousin cash whenever he asks for it. Even if he's a really nice guy that means to do better, his situation is such that he cannot possibly do better, no matter how much cash you give him. The result is that you end up as broke as he is and have accomplished nothing by trying to help. I don't for a second believe that the economy is in the shape that we were forcefed back in October nor that the outlook is as grim as has been repeated stated. Yes, it's bad and yes changes must be made and yes, those changes are expensive. The solution: put the money into successful areas with proven strategies for the future. Think of it as a trust fund with guaranteed interest for your crackhead cousin. He can't touch it unless he's clean. Best case is that he cleans up and the interest (gained from succcessful sources) puts him on track. Worst case is the fucker kills himself and you have an account full of cash to buy booze, hookers and put a downpayment on a house that will be built in his memory. Damiano,
There will only be inflation if the economy picks up steam. If you assume an economic expansion then we'll see inflation. If, as I do, you assume private sector growth will not happen in large part because of the intervention you rightly deride -- no inflation because no growth. Okay we now have this, The Rangel Bill:
Pelosi explains: The special tax rate only would apply to individuals and families with overall income (including income other than bonuses) in excess of $250,000.
The bill applies to payments received after December 31, 2008. and "Because they could not use sound judgment in the use of taxpayer funds, these AIG executives will pay the Treasury in the form of this tax. I urge all my colleagues to vote in favor of this legislation and in favor of recovering taxpayer dollars and protecting Americans from the continued poor judgment of some of America's largest companies."Okay where is Gabe when you need him? How the hell is this not a Bill of Attainder? It's a law written to punish a specific group of individuals as the Speaker of the House says herself: Because they didn't use sound judgment...will pay the Treasury in the form of this tax. Tax my ass, that's a fine. These executives were specifically allowed to use unsound judgment in a law written and passed by this Congress and this President. Even if it is somehow constitutional how can they make it retroactive? How can this tax apply to funds received BEFORE the law was enacted? Where the hell is the ACLU? It's Illinois Nazi time here fellas. I don't care how big of a scumbag these AIG execs are. They did it legally. A tax targeted like this is a sick, twisted precedent and it should not stand. Agreed. I am betting on expansion at some point, primarily in alternative energy, green crap and a bunch of other worthless shit that will not amount to anything for another 20 years or so. That is not to say that I think Obama's plan will result in recovery of any sort. Expansion will be limited to his target sectors while all the current engines of the economy (small business, manufacturing, probably healthcare, etc.) fail. In short, it will be false prosperity similar to the dot com boom, but with less valid substance mixed in with the crap. Here's an optimistic example: assume that all this "green" investment results in development of the ultimate Mr. Fusion. Throw in some toe nail clippings, dog shit and urine and it'll power your entire life for a week. Great- now layoff the entire auto industry, reconfigure the electric grid and develop the infrastructure to put a Mr. Fusion in every home- marketing, sales, logistics, etc. Mr. Fusion Inc.becomes the biggest company in the world and employs a billion people globally- everyone else is out of work. The rich folks have their Mr. Fusion on day one, the poor folks need gov't subsidies in order to get one and keep their power on, once the transition is complete. Etc, etc... A few people in the Senate wanted to put some degree of control on the TARP money. And Obama threatened to veto. Republicans and Democrats have said they were upset by how the Treasury Department spent the first allotment of $350 billion. Those voicing concerns said they don't feel like there was enough accounting for where the money went. Some Democrats also said homeowners facing foreclosure aren't getting enough help. Obama made clear that he doesn't want to issue a veto as one of his first actions in office, but he insisted that he has no choice, the senators said.
So now we see more bonuses going to Freddie and Fannie, and Obama will be shocked that such a thing could have happened. Shocked! It must be Bush's fault, or maybe Rush's.

GarandFan,
Do you expect the private sector to expand with all the economic uncertainty government is creating? With all the government borrowing you don't expect private sector borrowing to be crowded out of the market? See my #171 above. I expect we're in for a Lost Decade -- no mean feat. You make a valid point and I don't disagree. I suppose my argument comes from a perspective of time, ie, after the lost decade comes growth, right? It'll kill the Baby Boomers' retirement. But I don't see inflation at all. I do. We are pouring trillions of freshly minted dollars into circulation. The only way we won't see any inflation is if the Fed times the removal of dollars perfectly with the uptick if the economy. Not impossible, but highly unlikely. Still, preferable to a depression. I agree, we may be in for a lost decade. Been saying that for a while. What Obama is doing is eerily like what the Japanese did in the 90's. But that doesn't preclude inflation. >>I just don't see all the dollars the Fed is creating getting into the system given the decrease in the velocity of spending. I agree. But the dollar is in perilous territory. A week ago, the Euro was about 1.25 to the dollar. Today it is 1.34 and climbing. China can yank our chain in a heart beat, and they might just decide that's in their interest. Obama, for all his charm with the goateed Starbucks crowd, is not making friends or scaring anyone and with Soros in his cabinet, I see the dollar weakening. For the first time in my lifetime, the dollar is being negatively considered as the standard. The Fed is going to be buying all the ink the NYT no longer needs. Why wouldn't there be inflation? If the money supply increases, then prices will increase by a corresponding amount. The connection is easy to see. But why should economic growth be required for there to be inflation? Sure, an increase in demand for any particular thing will increase its price (until the supply of that thing increases or until substitutes are found), but that is not the same as inflation.

Croaker,
The money supply is not just the number of dollars printed, as I'm sure you're aware. It's the number of dollars in circulation. And if that velocity of that money slows form say 12 times a year to 8 times a year, then the money supply could be increased by 50% without changing the number of dollars in the market chasing the (short-term assumed) fixed number of goods. However if growth is zero, as it was in Japan for 15 years (not sure why it's the lost decade but then the Hundred Year War -- anyway) then the velocity of that money will not increase quickly. If the velocity doesn't increase then we shouldn't expect inflation. If the velocity increases slowly then we would expect the Fed to act to contract the money supply to keep the ratio relatively stable (e.g. raising interest rates or changing bank holding requirements). If we boom, then the Fed's tools will be inadequate to fight the inflation that many others foresee. I'm more pessimistic than that. I think Obama will break the investment class and we'll see system-wide slower growth than we have since 1945. Posted by: Nom de Blog at March 18, 2009 10:21 PM (szcvf) 240

Yes, you are right that the velocity of money is also important. I have a question: Did the Japanese gov't try to increase the supply of money? I know they dropped interest rates to near zero, and that that didn't help. Croaker,
Dropping interest rates to zero does increase money supply. Do you remember all those worrisome opinion pieces about the low savings rate in the US relative to Japan in the late 1980s and early 1990s. The Japanese people responded rationally (in the exact same way Americans are doing now**) and hoarded cash. The efforts of the Japanese government were ineffective. BTW, the Japanese also pumped billions into their banking system. That failed too. Government programs have a long history of failing in these matters. That's part of the reason I'm a conservative who believes big government is an evil -- a true evil. ** Go look up the rates. We've gone from saving zero (or perhaps somewhat less than zero when you consider all the equity taken out of housing) to saving several percent. I think it was 3% last time I looked but haven't looked in two or three weeks. Posted by: Nom de Blog at March 18, 2009 10:39 PM (szcvf) 245
