Defense Sec. Gates Ready To Announce Weapons Cuts

Because Lord knows, we wouldn't want to create or save any jobs in an industry that actually employs Americans, what with this whole recession thingy going on.

Thank goodness Secretary Gates is marshalling all his credibility, getting ready to take on the apparently very difficult job of helping Obama overcome criticism.

As a former CIA director with strong Republican credentials, Gates is prepared to use his credibility to help Obama overcome the expected outcry from conservatives. And after a lifetime in the national security arena, working in eight administrations, the 65-year-old Gates is also ready to counter the defense companies and throngs of retired generals and other lobbyists who are gearing up to protect their pet projects.

Tough job for a tough guy.

For a palate cleanser, how about a little war porn, for old times sake?

1 It's really not fair that we have al these weapons and well trained troops. What does the other side have? Nothing.

That's not fair and I won't stand for unfairness.

5 'Tis the explosion of a GMLRS, not an FAE.

I can't say I'm all that upset by the coming slashings in certain programs. I think most of the Army's FCS system needs to die, the Navy's DDG-1000 and LCS programs need to die. Not sure what Air Force programs I'd cut (certainly not the F-22 or JSF).

14 Maybe someone needs to explain to Gates (and Obama, though he's probably incapable of grasping this) that the *only* reason that the world is dumping all its cash into the 'safe harbor' that is the USA (which is also why the dollar is, essentially, the world currency) is that we have the raw military muscle to enforce our will across the globe via 'soft' power--sometimes being a 'hegemony' has its upsides, your Oneness.

36  I was born in one country, raised in another. My father was born in another country. I was not his only child.  He fathered several children with numerous women. I became very close to my mother, as my father showed no interest in me. My mother died at an early age from cancer. Later in life, questions arose over my real name.
My birth records were sketchy and no one was able to produce a legitimate, reliable birth certificate. I grew up practicing one faith but converted to Christianity, as it was widely accepted in my country, but I practiced non-traditional beliefs & didn't follow Christianity, except in the public eye under scrutiny.
I worked and lived among lower-class people as a young adult, disguising myself as someone who really cared about them. That was before I decided it was time to get serious about my life and I embarked on a new career.
I wrote a book about my struggles growing up.  It was clear to those who read my memoirs that I had difficulties accepting that my father abandoned me as a child. I became active in local politics in my 30's then with help behind the scenes, I literally burst onto the scene as a candidate for national office in my 40s. They said I had a golden tongue and could talk anyone into anything.  That reinforced my conceit. I had a virtually non-existent resume, little work history, and no experience in leading a single organization. Yet I was a powerful speaker and citizens were drawn to me as though I were a magnet and they were small roofing tacks. I drew incredibly large crowds during my public appearances..   This bolstered my ego.
At first, my political campaign focused on my country's foreign policy.  I was very critical of my country in the last war and seized every opportunity to bash my country. But what launched my rise to national prominence were my views on the country's economy. I pretended to have a really good plan on how we could do better and every poor person would be fed & housed for free.. I knew which group was responsible for getting us into this mess.  It was the free market, banks & corporations. I decided to start making citizens hate them and if they were envious of others who did well, the plan was clinched tight. I called mine "A People's Campaign" and that sounded good to all people. I was the surprise candidate because I emerged from outside the traditional path of politics & was able to gain widespread popular support.
I knew that, if I merely offered the people 'hope', together we could change our country and the world. So, I started to make my speeches sound like they were on behalf of the downtrodden, poor, ignorant to include "persecuted minorities" like the Jews. My true views were not widely known & I needed to keep them unknown, until after I became my nation's leader. I had to carefully guard reality, as anybody could have easily found out what I really believed, if they had simply read my writings and examined those people I associated with. I'm glad they didn't.  Then I became the most powerful man in the world. And the world learned the truth.

Who am I?

Gee, that's great.

But what about the STIMILUS??? I thought Obama didn't care WHAT money was spent on, so long as it was SPENT???

So we'll blow billions or trillions on Global Warming bullshit... but weapons systems? What do we need weapons systems for?

Congratulations, Secretary Gates! You have been assigned to dismantle the greatest war machine to ever defend the freedom of man. Good job, man. Let's start with ditching anti-missile defense: I already heard people asking what the point of defending Poland from Iranian missiles is... as though those missiles might not reach as far as London. Or San Francisco.

Let's gut the heart of the next generation fighter, ordering only 30 or so - just to make sure that makes the per unit price come out to a $10 billion or so. After all, the greatest part of the expense was actually developing the plane: so now that the most expensive part of the project is over, Why actually build a substantial number of planes that could actually make a strategic difference?

AFTER ALL: It's not like China is arming to the teeth or anything.

63 Day 57 of Barry's "War on Prosperity" ends with another moronic twist...

An actual spending based stimulus would have been to INCREASE weapons acquisitions.  Particularly in developed systems that are being heavily utilized and depleted in Iraq and Iran...  F-16 replacements for our Air National Guard Units which are supposed to be in service for decades to come... Add that F/A-18's, C-17's, C-130's, M1 Abram tanks, Bradley fighting vehicles, etc.  Production could be ramped up quickly, and if the government funded the expansion of working capital up-front instead of late-paying cheap bastards, the benefits to middle class workers with actual skills could be immediate.

Do you think Vladamir will be a benevolent overlord???

75 I put this on the boston.com blog, too. Enjoy.

Now, defense is one of the industries we can augment with stimulus funds, that will save or create American jobs, and give us a return on our investment for years to come even after the funds dry (and they will) - whether it be in new commercial technologies or just in peace of mind.

Why ARE we spending so much money on the stimulus and at the same time we are cutting funds to a constitutional imperative (provide for the common defense...)? Granted, there is plenty of waste in DOD, as there is in every other government agency.

But why (relatively) starve the military when we are gorging everything else? Do we need the new DDG-1000 destroyer? maybe not, it has it's flaws. Do we need the Future Combat Systems? Maybe not, it has it's flaws, too. Same for the F-22.

Sure, we are at a pinnacle of military superiority - the U.S. has literally 50% of the Naval might in the entire world - and we've downsized from nearly 600 ships (in the late 1980's) to less than 300. It's just that everyone else has downsized more. We can't count on that as a status quo, China and Russia have both re-energized their shipbuilding. Will we be at our same level of overwhelming military superiority 10 years from now? Most likely, 20? Maybe. 30? doubtful. We need to innovate, and deploy ever better weapons of war to ensure our enemies and rivals don't dare challenge. If we stop new weapons initiatives, we will pay the price, eventually.

I need relief  before I blow a fuse.
I took my dad to the mall the other day to buy some new shoes (he is 81). We decided to grab a bite at the food court. I noticed he was watching a teenager sitting next to him. The teenager had spiked hair in all different colors: green, red, orange, and blue. My dad kept staring at him. The teenager would look and find him staring every time. When the teenager had had enough, he sarcastically asked, 'What's the matter old man, never done anything wild in your life?' Knowing my Dad, I quickly swallowed my food so that I would not choke on his response, knowing he would have a good one, and in classic style he did not bat an eye in his response. 'Got drunk once, and had sex with a cockatoo. I was just wondering if you were my son.'

This is like the Carter years all over again, except this time I am old enough to understand how bad it really is. We are SO going to get internationally dissed and pissed on in the next four years. If we are lucky, a lot of people won't get killed as a result. Anyone feel lucky?

OTOH, if Teh Obamessiah cuts the troops back a lot, that means there will be less uniforms between him and the armed revoolutionaries as well. Always a bit of abright side in some situations.

81 SIM,

I can't stop laughing about your story about your father. Good for him. What was the kid's reaction?

83 Heh. 12 minutes left of St. Patrick's Day here on the east coast. Hope you laugh.

An Irish man went to confession in St. Patrick's Catholic Church.
' Father', he confessed, 'it has been one month since my last confession. I had sex with Nookie Green twice last month.'
The priest told the sinner, 'You are forgiven. Go out and say three Hail Mary's.'
Soon thereafter, another Irish man entered the confessional. 'Father, it has been two months since my last confession. I've had sex with Nookie Green twice a week for the past two months.'
This time, the priest questioned, 'Who is this Nookie Green?'
'A new woman in the neighborhood,' the sinner replied.
'Very well,' sighed the priest. Go and say ten Hail Mary's.;
At mass the next morning, as the priest prepared to deliver the sermon, a tall,
voluptuous, drop-dead gorgeous redheaded woman entered the sanctuary. The eyes of every man in the church fell upon her as she slowly sashayed up the aisle and sat down right in front of the priest. Her dress was green and very short, and she wore matching, shiny emerald-green shoes.

The priest and the altar boy gasped as the woman in the green dress and matching green shoes sat with her legs spread slightly apart, but just enough to realize she wasn't wearing any underwear.
The priest turned to the altar boy and whispered, 'Is that Nookie Green?'
The bug-eyed altar boy couldn't believe his ears but managed to calmly reply, 'No Father, I think it's just a reflection from her shoes'.

84 In a stunning development that caught key aids completely by surprise today, Sec. Gates announced today a new program to convert advanced radar monitor screens previously slated for the anti-missile defense system into the next generation Advanced Messiah Teleprompter for White House use.

"I swear, if I heard one more 'ummm' out of that guy's mouth, I was going to go batshit eating crazy!," Gates explained.

Not only is President BO going to slash the military he's going to slash American defense sales to our allies.  India may not get the GE gas turbines it has ordered for several major warships.

I guess president 666 wants the French to supply them or maybe the Russians.

90 I think the explosion may be some kind of unitary rocket for MLRS.  Could be wrong, but that is a fantastic weapon.

The US Army was behind the ball on that one, but Israel was on top of it.

I'm scared that we're going to lose a lot of the technology we need to have in case shit hits fan in the future.  china got information when Clinton was pres.  Since then, we've perfected our field artillery, F22, and missile shield and many other elements of warfare.  Will China or Russia learn how that stuff works?

91 Suck on that, Skynet.

92 Hey, we don't need no stinkin' weapons.  We have the Obamassiah on our side.  One lightening curt remark from him could cut down a whole division.  His stern gaze could immobilize a regiment of tanks.  This, in addition to having 'the smartest woman on earth' as Secretary of State would allow us to deliver a stunning one-two power punch that will defeat any 4th rate power on this planet.  As long as it's understood that they attack us only Mon thru Friday, between 9 and 4.

Ginger, re the headache question no, but then I haven't really sobered up enough since the inaugaration for the hangover to catch up with me. Things look better from the bottom of a wine bottle, that's for sure.

p.s. Does anybody else fear space debris? Because I'm still very suspicious of that damn satellite collision last month.

96 I've seen that photo before, it's a test shot of a fuel-air explosive (FAE). Excellent for leaving a 'clean-up in isle 3'. A beautiful way to clean out a cave or enemy in the open, great for entrances to bunkers, stockpiles, or anything that stays put long enough to call up a fast mover to deliver it.
