Obama Ends 9/11 Policy Allowing Pilots to Carry Guns

Genius.

As was asked when this issue was debated -- and resolved, we thought -- "If you don't trust a pilot to carry a gun, what the fuck are you doing allowing him at the controls of a plane carrying 300 people?"

Nah, he's not a hard-core ideologue or anything. He just wants practical, common-sense solutions.

5 Aghh I understand why the Left went apeshit. We can do nothing, nothing to stop this guy. All we can do is bitch and hope that in 20 months the American people let us take the Congress in order to stop the madness.

The Left could indulge in their little assassination fantasies, they could imagine Rove being frog marched, they could imagine war crimes trials. We can't. We're adults.

I know that when Democrats royally screw the pooch and get kicked out by the people they spend twenty years lingering like a bad fart, undermining the President's foreign policy while being feted by the media as "the greatest ex-President". Oh, and doing Habitat for Humanity. That too.

Must be because of all those incidents that have happened since the policy was put in place. Why, scarcely a week goes by that a pilot doesn't have to draw down on someone.

18 This is the same stupidity as "gun free zones".  Nobody is advocating that the pilot or teacher has to be armed but what they are now doing is advertising that they are not armed.  Give the qualified pilot the option to carry and anyone stupid enough to try and hijack a plane can roll the dice and hope he does not get a .38 slug in the brain.

26 on a slightly more serious note -

Isn't the Washington Times and, by extension, ace, being irresponsible by publicizing this piece of information?

The article says that the program was being done quietly and secretly by the Obama administration, sort of like the way the the Booooooooosh Regime was using black prisons and airplanes all secret like.

What's left unmentioned in the article is that the Obama administration is also reverting back to the policy of having the Air Marshalls wear ties and suit jackets - sure, these will be bright red jackets and the ties will be bow ties - because Michelle likes the way they look - but at least they'll look professional.

But now the rightwing blogosphere is blabbing this safety related information all over teh internets for any lesbian hentai-loving terrorist wanna-be to read.

So I ask, where should the line be drawn?

I think this is dumb on Obama's part, who does it harm to have the pilots armed? I don't know of any incident where a pilot has hauled off and shot anyone so what is the justification for this, other than appeasement of the asshat anti-gun crowd?

Frankly, I am more worried these days about the outsourcing of airport help. Look at the example in Britain a couple weeks ago when the protester guy turned out to be employed by Menzies at the airport there.

Passengers are basically put through the ringer in order to board airplanes that are being cleaned, loaded, and fueled by an increasingly large number of, um what's that politically correct name for them, let's just call them potentially anti-American agitators.

And don't give me any bullshit about how these people are screened and how these people aren't a threat. I bet any one of us morons could come up with a successful plan to somehow sabotage an airplane given the access these employees have.

Just to give an example, not terrorist related but illustrating the potential for mischief, Alaska Airlines had a problem with drug smuggling by California gangs to Washington gangs in the baggage holds a few years ago, coinciding with the outsourcing of baggage handling to Menzies.

42 Hey guys,
My hubby got an email from ALPA (the pilot union) stating the TSA is very supportive of the program and plans on expanding it.

In stark contrast to an op-ed article in today’s edition (March 17, 2009) of the Washington Times, that claims “…President Obama is quietly ending the federal firearms program, risking public safety on airlines in the name of an anti-gun ideology,” TSA officials reassured ALPA they are committed to the FFDO program and have plans for its expansion.

TSA’s leadership immediately contacted ALPA and requested a meeting to discuss this news report. ALPA representatives met with TSA executives this afternoon and were told that TSA embraces the FFDO program, that there are no plans to reduce or restrict its growth, and that the agency fully intends to grow and expand the program.

47 So a program that puts 12,000 experienced, reliable, armed men - literally at the point of attack for free (essentially) is getting cut or scaled back.  Someone is going to have to explain this one in crayon or powerpoint.

I would like each of these guys should take a break to spend 15min explaining the "right to bear arms" using the Federalist papers and the 9/11 report to their passengers when on the flight line over the next two weeks.  Surely the system can handle a series of 15min delays, what could go wrong.

And why don't pilots get no trace plates if they want?

Every time I turn on TV, there's another ludicrous, asinine, trial balloon being floated by these Marxist clowns.
I'm getting really sick of it. My guess is that there are others who are even more pissed than I am. These guys are extreme radicals and they need to be knocked down a few notches, and I think its coming- probably sooner rather than later. Obama couldn't manage a hotdog stand. You know what, even it if is true, maybe especially if it is true, not only do I not give a fuck if we've kept them down, I say we haven't kept them down long or hard enough and that is the real problem.  Once expectations are raised as with Gobechov, Tianenmen Square, black riots of the 60's, anyone familiar with history knows that is the flashpoint were it becomes dicey.  If you keep the boot on the neck and don't let up they will not rise.  Let 'em up too much and, as Ceasar said of the Germans, "they're either at your feet or at your throat."

86 Leftists are not liberal by any definition.

Hippies, at least those not "hippies" in name only, are close to classically liberal, but with a touch of new-age pacificm: spineless, dirty, occasionally activist (greenpeace founder is actually reasonable, and he's disgusted with the organization now), but harmless; mostly tolerant and good-natured, but myopic when it comes to things like communes that aren't held together in the way small communities actually worked historically (common ethnicity, religion, and defense). They're like stoned hobos.

Leftism is about reaction. The goal is destabilization. Socialism is the only viable route to totalitarian society in a modern state. War between socialists is like street gangs fighting to prove that they deserve to break your legs and that your legs will be broken no matter what, so you better choose our gang. It's very much like Cthulu.

"Cue the outrage. For months, the Obama administration and members of Congress have known that insurance giant AIG was getting ready to pay huge bonuses while living off government bailouts. It wasn't until the money was flowing and news was trickling out to the public that official Washington rose up in anger and vowed to yank the money back."

I kid you not.  The AP.  In fact, Jennifer Loven contributed to the report.

There is your expansion. Yeah, behind the program just simply replacing armed pilots with more regulation and bureaucrats.

Stuff a small squirt bottle of ammonia in your carry-on - something that shoots a stream like a squirtgun. I use an old plastic travel-size cologne bottle. If they ask, tell them it's part of your shaving kit or something. If needed, I can squirt a two second burst of ammonia into someone's eyes from about six feet.

It's better than nothing.

96 Another thing I heard mentioned on talk radio, but never on MSNBC or even Fox, for that matter: that devout Christian, Mr. Obama - the one that spent 20 years in that freakhouse called a "church" in Chicago without ever hearing a damned thing... So much for all the Devout Christian crap, huh?

98 I wish I could work up some genuine outrage about this decision, but I can't do it. Teh Obamessiah is a gun-hating politician from a state that is filled with gun-hating politicians. It's not about National Security, airline securit, or even personal security. He and his political ilk just don't like, or want, private citizens to own firearms. Unless those private citizens are rich, celebrities, elected officials, or any combination thereof. THEN they can have guns, or employ people who have guns. It's just that simple.

105 I saw on Fox news tonight where Janet Napolitano announced that the word "terrorism" would no longer be used.  Now a terrorist act is a "man-caused disaster."

(What about woman-caused disasters?  Hmmmmm?)

From the Fox News site:

Napolitano tells the German news site Spiegel Online that while she presumes there is always a threat from terrorism: "I referred to "man-caused" disasters. That is perhaps only a nuance, but it demonstrates that we want to move away from the politics of fear toward a policy of being prepared for all risks that can occur."

I just . . . don't know what to say.

Well, okay, I'll say . . . this new terminology just makes me whole lots less scared of terrorism man-made disasters than I used to be!  I am so happy to "move away" from having to worry about these risks, cause you know, after all, shit risks happens happen!

And I'm glad we will be "prepared" for these "risks," just like we are prepared for tornadoes and floods and other disasters that we can't really do anything about to stop.

I feel lots better knowing that we shouldn't have to feel like we could somehow stop these "man-made disasters," either.  Just be prepared for the "risks," and take 'em as they happen.

Yep.  That's the ticket.

Don't worry!  Be happy!

121

OK, here's a plan:

First, you make sure the pilot doesn't have a gun. That removes about 2 lbs. from the aircraft. Then you get rid of that useless heavy door that separates the cockpit from the cabin, making the plane (what?) about 100 more ponds lighter. Then you remove the air marshal; 180 more pounds. You don't need any of this stuff anyway.

The airline uses less fuel, which sticks it to the Arabs (somehow) but it also saves the airline money which is good for the economy (somehow) and it reduces each airplane's carbon footprint which saves the environment (somehow). And one less gun on the plane means the aircraft is actually safer (somehow).

Posted by: FireHorse at March 18, 2009 07:39 AM (5KNeJ)

122 And we want the people who have the skills to land the aircraft to get into a gunfight for what reason? The cabin crew should have the guns.

Posted by: Steve at March 18, 2009 09:35 AM (r7uGs)

123

Someone please explain to me this pre-9-11 thinking.  We do not need to arm our pilots because there is no threat.  There are no such beings as enemy combatants.  Let's close GITMO, there is no dangerous consequence in holding them in the U.S.  On the otherhand, Queen Nancy must have the Air Force fleet of airplanes at her call because of threats to the Speakers life after 9-11.  Which way is it folks?

Posted by: LYN at March 18, 2009 10:16 AM (vdSfT)

122 And we want the people who have the skills to land the aircraft to get into a gunfight for what reason? The cabin crew should have the guns.

I wouldn't necessarily object to that. But pilots do very little these days other than a flurry of activity on take-off and landing. The computers pretty much fly the things themselves. Furthermore, the pilots are the last line of defense. If the tangos make it into the cabin, they can and should be able to defend themselves.
