| Krauthammer Blasts Obama on Stem CellsThat part of the ceremony, watched from the safe distance of my office, made me uneasy. The other part -- the ostentatious issuance of a memorandum on "restoring scientific integrity to government decision-making" -- would have made me walk out. Restoring? The implication, of course, is that while Obama is guided solely by science, Bush was driven by dogma, ideology and politics. What an outrage. Bush's nationally televised stem cell speech was the most morally serious address on medical ethics ever given by an American president. It was so scrupulous in presenting the best case for both his view and the contrary view that until the last few minutes, the listener had no idea where Bush would come out. Obama's address was morally unserious in the extreme. It was populated, as his didactic discourses always are, with a forest of straw men. Such as his admonition that we must resist the "false choice between sound science and moral values." Yet, exactly 2 minutes and 12 seconds later he went on to declare that he would never open the door to the "use of cloning for human reproduction." Does he not think that a cloned human would be of extraordinary scientific interest? And yet he banned it.To me, Obama's statement showed a fundamental pettiness of spirit. There was no reason to criticize the Bush administration in his remarks, but it's almost as though he can't help himself. Actually, I'm beginning to think he really cannot. After all, doing so might force him to concede that others have good reasons for their positions, an admission that would undermine his ability to play the noble crusader. Comments1
Add to this the fact that Congress just banned embryonic stem cell funding in the budget bill he just signed.

Slu, you are absolutely spot-on in your final assessment. I'd love to see someone actually take the time to comb through the transcripts of every speech that man has given since (and including) Inauguration, and give metrics on how many of them had some sort of criticism of "the previous administration" in some regard. I imagine that we're still at 100%. Posted by: reason at March 13, 2009 01:24 PM (kZVsz) 3

One of the things that Obama said during this signing ceremony was:
"Our government has forced what I believe is a false choice between sound science and moral values" This is downright fucking scary coming from a man who has as much power as he does. There is extremely often a choice between science and moral values! Has he ever heard of the field of study called "Ethics"? It is one of the earliest fields pondered by intellectuals. This just goes to show: the idea that "Obama is an intellectual", which is pretty much taken for granted by most elites, it completely fucking laughable. "Pettiness of spirit" -- yeah, but . . . I've been asking myself, Why do they keep trashing Bush? I mean, Obama won -- ask him!. He's The Guy In Charge now, and he and his people keep railing against Bush. Sometimes it runs against tradition (Secretary Clinton) and sometimes it's counterproductive (Secretary Clinton) but mostly it's just grown-ups acting childish. I've concluded that they do this because that's all they got. It's not experience, it's a history of exemplary character, it's not a platform of ideas. It's Our side hates Bush. So, my next question is -- How long can they go on this? Posted by: FireHorse at March 13, 2009 01:42 PM (5KNeJ) 15

They have made such a big deal about the "war on science" over the last few years he has to do a victory dance. He wants to reassure his supporters that science, or I should say "science", has won. By contrasting himself to the "anti-science" Bush administration he's trying to establish himself as the arbiter of sound science. What bothers my is embryonic stem cells have been involved in some epic fails in regard to tumors and adult stem cells had shown the most promise. The only way I can explain the Obama's administrations assault on evidence based medicine is that it was a political knee jerk reaction. Anything the prolife crowd likes-must be wrong and anything they hate must be right. Which is another way of saying Oboma is driven by dogma, ideology and politics. I'd like to see some fund raising numbers on this issue. Yeah, it's funny that the Left would always tout books like Brave New World in their rhetoric about bush. "Oh! It's a Brave New World here under the Bush Regime!!!" Same with 1984. This shit here is LITERALLY straight out of Brave New World. I find it disturbing that nobody flinches or even understands the difference between embryonic stem cells and adult stem cells. ESCR was never banned under Bush. Just Federal Funding was restrited to existing lines. Many therapies are currently been applied with Adult Stem Cells, including heart, pancreas, circulatory system, etc. All embryonic stem cells have resulted in massive cancers. First of all, regardless of the cures it would bring about, I still think it is hugely unethical to farm Human Beings (even though they are just a couple cells, they are still human beings scientifically speaking) for the purposes of experimentation leading to death. But I do find it interesting that Embryonic Stem Cells are a massive fail so far. It is almost like Mother Nature naturally resists being manipulated and used in a Frankenstein-like way. This insistence that with enough FEDERAL money SOME benefit from embryonic stem cell research will be found reminds me of Edward Teller's insistence that there has to be SOME kind of peacetime use for the atomic bomb . . . like using them for excavation of giant canals, like we need a lot of them.
And it is unfortunate that Dennis Miller didn't call Saletan on his lie about banning embryonic stem cell research. Now failure to get federal funding is banning. 1.) Obama bashes Bush because he doesn't want to grow up and BE president--he wants to keep campaigning for it--lots more fun and you can vote "present" all you like.
2.) This was never about cures--those come from adult stem cells without the fetal farming issues. This is all about justifying the philosphy of abortion: an embryo is a disposable clump of cells with no moral standing. In fact, if abortions provide raw manufacturing materials, abortions are a positive good. Judging from his record at Christ Hospital, Obama is more pro-abortion than Elanor Smeal and Hillary combined. 3.) Using unwanted in vitro embryos? Isn't that what the necrophiliac said; "Hey; you weren't using it!"? The whole enterprise stinks of cannibalism. 4.) By Obama's formulation, we owe Dr. Frankenstein an apology--there's no such thing as "mad science", only science , which he is for and Republicans are against. Science could put a do-it-yourself- WMD kit on the shelves at Wal-Mart. If you oppose it, you are a Caveman(R.). After all, it's "science". 5.) Then Obama turns around and says, "Hey--you know what--I'm against science, too. Human cloning is wrong--if a baby is born from it, that is." Yeah--what's he gonna do, a forced abortion on the woman? Put her in jail for giving birth? "A forest of strawmen". unthinking. obtuse. morally arrogant. unserious. moral posing, moral preening, moral grandstanding. ...for adult stem cells to be used... the shit hasn't even been able to come near the possibilities the embryonic cells bring to the table! That is actually the exact opposite of the factual truth. On the chance that you're not a troll but just some deluded person, I will elaborate. Embryonic stem cells can't get funding anywhere but from the government because, while they have some interesting properties (their 'pluripotentiality'), they are uncontrollable, have cured nothing, and only led to creating cancers in animal test subjects. Adult stem cells have a great deal of promise and will be where any gains are made for health care. In simple fact, many gains have allready been made and treatments are being tested with adult stem cells right now. Even scientists pushing for embryonic research usually assert this - they only wish to study the embryonic cells in the hope they'll get a greater understanding of how they work (their pluripotentiality). They think that knowledge will be used to make actually treatments using.... adult stem cells. However - they've (fairly recently, in the last year or two) discovered now how to make adult stem cells pluripotential. That interesting quality - the only interesting quality - particular to embryonic ones. There's literally no reason why we have to harvest embryonic stem cells, even for research. We've discovered how to turn adult stems into embryonic stem cells. And just for shits and giggles, we still have embryonic stem cells from umbilical cords and placentas. And ultimately, the most potential and the most promising cure will be using your own stem cells for your own treatment. Adult stem cells, because they will be coming from YOU. I don't know if I've made this point before or not, but Obama is acting exactly like his buddy, Deval Patrick in MA. Both followed Republicans in office, who had to make principled decisions during their tenure and did their best to move forward on principles they had outlined in their campaigns.
Well, both Patrick and Obama have no clear agenda of their own, other than to dismantle the previous administrations' key initiatives. Grow government? Check. Roll back tax cuts? Check. Flail wildly as economic gains drift away? Check. It's gonna take a while to fix what both of these dildos have broken out of pure ideological malfeasance.
