Rumors Swirl: If Jim Tedesco Doesn't Win His Special Election, Steele is Out

Can't say I'll miss him at this point.

...Tedisco's lead is shrinking. The latest poll has him up by 4. His lead was 12 two weeks ago.

5 Republicans imploding? Check out the Drudge link about FBI raid at the current office of an Obama appointee.

Besides, once Steele is out, we can say to the rest of the country 'We tried black, no we're going back. Learn from our mistake.'

6 OT - but just saw on Drudge that the FBI raided the offices of Obama's latest nominee - the Chief Technology Officer.

Is it officially the worst transition ever? What was the previous record of those that did not survive their nomination- 6 or 7?

7 They should gate him after each election, after NY-20 then NJ Gubernatorial. If he can get results - keep you job. Outcome based. Otherwise, boot him...

9 Too bad - he seemed like a nice guy, but playing affirmative action me-tooism is not a winner for the Republicans.

Holy shit!

I didn't even know there was an important special election on March 31st.
What the fucking fuck?

The Republicans should poured 100% of their efforts and resources into winning this seat. And it's like they're keeping it on the down-low. WTF???

Posted by: Darling, just an entertainer at March 12, 2009 10:26 AM (fJdbo)

11 I don't consider Steele an "affirmative action" choice. He had as good bona fides going into the selection as any of the other candidates. Just, for some inexplicable reason, he's done everything -wrong- since then. A real shame.

I think Blackwell could also be a good choice, unfortunately, though, if he were to head it up, it -would- look like an AA choice. God, it sucks that everyone's so focused on bullshit like that.

So, let me be the first to say it. Fred Thompson would be a stellar choice for the position.

13 I got an e-mail from the GOP asking for money for this election, which is how I knew about it.

Did you catch the part in Steele's GQ interview where he admits his own neighborhood has races with only Democrats on the ballot? And he didn't indicate that's a problem the GOP needs to fix? *shudder*

Yes he would. He'd never show up for work, though. But when he did, he'd be fucking great. But Fred would show up for work, maybe, like, oh, one day a month. So there's that, and that's not good.

17-Conservatives have a party (and the infrastructure that goes with it), we just need to be prepared to beat the moderate politicians who get to be part of it into submission. Regularly.

Hell, it can't be that hard to do. Us morons do it every day.
Good grief man, get with the program or get the fuck out of the way so someone with some real communication skills can start the national dialogue that is much needed right now.
Washington is a target-rich environment for those with the intellectual ammunition. You, Mr. Steele, appear to be low on supplies.

22 I'd love to see teh Fred take the spot. and, I do believe he'd show up for work, eh, he just won't show up for work.
What I mean is that he'll phone it in, but in a good way. Not bound to a specific desk in a specific office somewhere, he'd be in the mix of things, and unafraid to take a stand.
Other than Fred, I still say Palin would be a good pick. The base needs energizing and she's just the pill to do it. Not perfect, mind you, but isn't that part of her appeal?

Posted by: jmflynny at March 12, 2009 10:51 AM (/q4F6)

23 @ 13: He does live in Maryland. Most of the Republicans politicians there, save the aging Roscoe Bartlett, aren't exactly conservative. And in PG county where he lives, a conservative candidate wouldn't have a chance. So you can't be shocked if there are no R's on the ballot either. Even squishy ones.

Then again, all of this kind of explains why I'm not shocked about Steele's behavior and positions so far. He was Lt. Gov of one of the most liberal states in the union, serving in the only GOP administration since Agnew. He wasn't exactly ever going to carry the Reagan mantra with him wherever he went in the GOP.

Posted by: FireHorse at March 12, 2009 10:57 AM (5KNeJ)

25 I was for Blackwell from the start. But to go along with some other comments here...I would LOVE for Fred Thompson to take over. I don't buy into the lazy meme that was spewed relentlessly by the MSM during the primaries. I had the great fortune to meet and talk to Mr. Thompson when he was campaigning and will not hesitate to say that this is one intelligent, thoughtful, conservative man who takes no flack & tells it like it is.

I still lament his dropping out of the primaries. The media never gave him a chance...and there's a reason for that.

Steele needs to go. He's doing the GOP conservatives no favors.

Posted by: Twinks at March 12, 2009 10:59 AM (KGbOi)

26 Hey, I'm no fan of Steele - he's been pretty much a total flop since taking office. But I also remember a guy who was fodder for our meat-grinder for his first several months in office, making one dumbass statement after another. Came across as a radical buffoon - which was a fairly accurate picture.

Howard Dean. How we laughed at his ineptitude! At least, we did right up until the time the Democrats under his chairentityship ("chairperson" is so speciesist) cleaned our clocks in 2006 and again last year.

The thing is, party chairmen have a few months to get their feet wet, learn the ropes, get their team installed and up to speed, etc. It is Presidents who have no such luxury, as we are discovering now to our intense daily pain.

Posted by: Adjoran at March 12, 2009 11:00 AM (PbKS0)

27 So you can't be shocked if there are no R's on the ballot either. Even squishy ones.

Yeah, Milwaukee County is the same way--only contested race on my ballot last Nov was POTUS. But I don't understand how the GOP expects to have any sort of nationwide relevance if they keep blithely writing off the nation's population centers. It's like putting five players on a football field...

Let's not be silly. Steele isn't doing a poor job because he's black. He's doing a poor job because he's apparently not much of a conservative. At least, he's not much of one off-the-cuff.

Posted by: reason at March 12, 2009 11:02 AM (q/kmn)

29 Adjoran, did you really jsut give Howard Dean the credit for the Dems successes in '06 and by extension claim the GOP will do the same with Steele's Democrat Litetm approach?
If so, pass that thing over here, because that is obviously some good stuff.

I think Methos' poit was that Affirmative Actioning IS silly, no, beyond that. And I sadly suspect Steele got the job because of that. (And if that was a motive, then why not pick Blackwell, who is the real deal???)

Posted by: Curmudgeon at March 12, 2009 11:12 AM (ujg0T)

32 just lock him in a room and make him read some choice conservative literature, keep him out of the media until then.

Posted by: heinricho at March 12, 2009 11:13 AM (Fltc2)

33 reason (2 I meant to humorously address the inevitable "White GOP dumps token black chairperson" charge that's coming. Being black didn't hamstring his tv appearances before he became the chair, so I wouldn't give that as the cause now. I wouldn't even (seriously) say that he got the chair by me-too affirmative action.

I guess what I'd like to do is plant the idea in the minds of moderates that it's okay to have second thoughts about supporting that black guywho seemed like a good idea at the time.

Posted by: Methos at March 12, 2009 11:17 AM (IvOqJ)

34 I think people are giving non-white-males more credit than they really deserve. Are they really all they are made out to be? Once elected or appointed to a position where they have to perform, the results are frequently disappointing. E.g: Obama. E.g: Steele, Rice, Powell. E.g: Many female congressmen, senators and governors. How many really stand out as exceptional if you are ignorant of their race or sex? Pickings are pretty poor in the leadership department right now. It behooves us to not keep looking only at minorities and women to elevate so we can say "Me too!"

Posted by: lmg at March 12, 2009 11:20 AM (A/vgC)

35 Thnaks, Curmudgeon, that's about right.

lmg, I would just be careful to limit that assertion to the list of examples you've given. I'm sure there are decent conservative women and minorities somewhere-but they likely avoid political careers for the same reasons conservative white guys do. We have to pick from the pool of people who are willing to do the job.

Posted by: Curmudgeon at March 12, 2009 11:30 AM (ujg0T)

39 I used to understand the Democrat / CNN force-fed perspective that "Nothing will prove better than electing a black guythat we are finally post-racial, and that anyone can be the President."
Now I'm really feeling more along the lines of "Nothing will finally make us post-racial than elecing a black guy, him turning out to be a collossal failure, and after wondering what possibly went wrong, us realizing that anyone can be a lousy President."
Some of us just so happen to have read-ahead in the textbook last night.

40 "Actually, they have an additional reason -- the liberal media smearsfocus on them with extra special intensity."
Yeah, that reminds me. Aren't we all being distracted from the REAL NEWS of the day? Bristol isn't getting married! She's gonna be yet another single mommy! Sarah Palin surely cried herself to sleep over this! Big sloppy tears into that huge endangered polar-bear pelt!
That poor kid. Somewhere, someone in the media will publish every B-that child ever brings home on a report card...

Posted by: reason at March 12, 2009 11:38 AM (5npD/)

41 If this is true 'they' are just looking for an excuse to get rid of him.

If Tedisco gets beat (I doubt he will), it's not Steele's fault that the country chairs picked this loudmouth douche as the candidate.

They could have had John Fasso, a real fiscal conservative, but they went with Mr. "I would have voted for the stimulus if my amendments had been a part of it".

Besides, unless the Republicans win back either the state Senate or Governor's office (there's a chance but not a big one that one of those will happen) this seat is likely gone after the 2010 census redistricting if a Republican is holding it.

If you want to get rid of Steele (and I pretty much do at this point) do it but don't hide behind this shit.

44 As for Bristol Palin, yeah, I think it's utterly hilarious that the papers are claiming that the Chas Freeman controversy, or the Tea Parties, weren't sufficiently newsworthy, but they will now fall all over themselves reporting on Bristol Palin's breakup. The hypocrisy, it has become physically painful to watch.

45 I think the GOP should be considered moribund.
We need to do what the libtards did in Colorado. Bypass the party, until the party grows a pair, and do it ourselves. You want Tedisco to win in NY 20. Send him $5 bucks or whatever. You want to win in anywhere, find out who's running and start supporting them. We don't have Speilbergs or Buffets on our side. We need to stop whining and start fighting. We already know the media is going to ignore our protests (witness the lack of coverage on the Tea Parties) but we can do it. They're arrogant and they think they can intimidate us. But they're wrong.

Posted by: Iblis at March 12, 2009 12:46 PM (9221z)

46 Hmmm.

Amazingly enough if Steele had spent the last few weeks shut in a seedy motel room with a suitcase of pills and a couple hookers he'd be further ahead in his job as RNC Chairman than he is right now.

Frankly that's my litmus test in life.

Are you better served being stoned or sober? If the former then you need a change.

Because he doesn't change the subject.

Conservative or not, I can tell Steele's a genuine Republican because he's honest and decent. When he's asked a question (say, a baiting question about abortion or something else) he answers it. He has to learn to be a Democrat and change the subject.
