| MSNBC Notices Earmark Hypocrisy... of RepublicansWell played, sirs. Very well played. Of course, those calling for an end to earmarks do in fact want an end to earmarks; but if no one else is giving theirs up, it's difficult to punish one's constituents alone. If only there were some office holder, perhaps elected nationally, perhaps in some kind of "executive" capacity, who presided over the government and could block the excesses of congressmen with a single statement of negation. Let's call such a hypothetical power a "veto," from the Latin for "I say nay," and let us term my proposed nationally-elected presiding executive officer a "President," for lack of a better term. Now, to take this hypothetical one step further: Let us postulate that a person running for this new office of "The Presidency" (pardon my neologism) would actually vow to exercise his nationally-bestowed authority to reform this earmark process, and end earmarks completely. What's that you say? We do have a President, and he did in fact promise to veto a bill containing any earmarks at all? Oh. Well then. Thanks to DrewM again. Bonus: Top GOP porker? Ron Paul. Why pick on him, if I'm excusing others for going along with earmarks if no one else is willing to give up theirs? Well: 1) He is one of the biggest yellers about small government. I certainly don't begrudge him that but... 2) Does such a yeller need to be the top Republican porker? Can't he satisfy himself with being, say, in the middle third of earmarkers? And of course: 3) It's disappointing, because I've been told he's the Only Man Who Can Save America.Comments1

Difficult, but not impossible, and these men didn't have the integrity or honor to do so. Just like Ron Paul. Posted by: Christopher Taylor at March 11, 2009 03:09 PM (PQY7w) 2
There are no earmarks anymore. Obama put an end to that shit a long time ago...remember?

The heathen republicans will stop at nothing to make it appear that Our One and Only True Saviour has been anything less than divine. (This time by secretly slipping their foul earmarks into bills that Our One and Only True Saviour trustingly signs.)

And thus ends the "Era of Responsible Spending in Washington", strangled in its crib by a hulking $410 billion dollar spending bill.

Thing is, this kind of stuff is pretty easily explained. The bias is staggering, and drip drip drip people start to worry that everything they hear about Obama is tainted by this leftward bias.
Obama owns the economic disaster. Obama owns every last cent of the tax hikes. Obama is living down to the lowest warnings issued against him during the elections. People are going to realize this. Ron Paul, a week ago:
“We have to regulate the Federal Reserve so they don’t continue to do the same mistakes – print money – and regulate the Congress so they don’t spend money they don’t have and quit borrowing, and lower taxes, balance the budget enough and actually reduce your deficit and reduce your spending..." Is there a full listing of all earmarks, maybe even sortable by state or requesting congresscritter? I'd like to see what, if anything, my elected officials have asked for. I've already decided that I won't be voting for them, but it'd be nice to have a few more pieces of argument-fodder when I start to encourage friends to also vote otherwise. Ron Paul is insane. He is right sometimes, and I love his clarity on certain points about fiscal sanity. But he's insane anyway.
that's a fucking shame, because a third party would not be a bad idea if one wasn't insane. Posted by: shill at March 11, 2009 03:19 PM (8jYMc) 13

It's a relocation, but the owner has no idea that the housing market is declining, He bought at the top of the market and he is asking to make a serious profit. Well, as I said, it's a relocation, guys moving to DC, so eventually, he will get realistic, they all do: "Secretary Tim Geithner, has put his Westchester home up for sale: The five-bedroom Tudor in Larchmont is now on the market for $1.635 million. But as smart as he may be when it comes to economic matters, one thing is for certain. If, as ,some are suggesting, Geithner's career comes to a premature end, the former president of the New York Federal Reserve will not

I don't have a huge problem with earmarks, but manage it. Cap it at reasonable $ figure per Senator and Congresscritter, based on seniority or whatever, and institute some transparency. Bringing home the bacon is a reasonable political act, in many cases the constituents know what they need and can't get it through the regular bureaucracy.
It would be much better if Senators were still appointed by the States and the list came from the legislatures instead of campaign donors. Posted by: Jean at March 11, 2009 03:28 PM (L64A6) 21

Politico showing slight balls:
The old bulls won. Pulled between his campaign rhetoric and his own party’s congressional barons, President Barack Obama largely sided with his Hill allies in unveiling an earmark proposal Wednesday that shies away from any strict crackdown on the practice. Obama proposed further transparency for the spending goodies prized by many members of Congress – but stopped far short of the kind of serious limits reformers wanted. “Rather than trying to fine tune a fundamentally flawed process, we should take aggressive steps to prevent unauthorized earmarks,” said Sen. Russ Feingold (D-Wisc.), a leading anti-earmark critic on the Hill. Feingold’s GOP partner – and Obama’s former presidential rival – went further. “The President’s rhetoric is impressive, but his statement affirms we will continue to do business as usual in Washington. . .” said Sen. John McCain (R-Ariz.), who has led the fight against earmarks. “The President could have resolved this issue in one statement – no more unauthorized pork barrel projects – and pledged to use his veto pen to stop them. This is an opportunity missed.” Posted by: Anti-Harkonnen Freedom Fighter at March 11, 2009 03:34 PM (5r0Tz) 25
I dunno, I checked out the video of Geithner's house, and I didn't think the furnishing was that bad. Not worth 1.63 million, but not that bad. I was expecting tacky country with those cut out hearts and chintz everywhere, or brass, chrome, and shag rugs. (That would have matched the cheesy music better.)

This is Ron Paul explaining why earmarks are actually good:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fq_5H1XKVww
He says that even if you stripped every earmark, the amount of money in the bill would be the same (because it is pre-set), but the extra money would be for the President to allocate rather than the Congress.

Maybe it's just me but...
it's almost as if the Republicans don't want to win back the majority. There's a subtle point that many commenters here are missing. Republicans in Congress, like Democrats and Independents, already have what they want - a seat in Congress. In their list of priorities, that seat is #1 by a long shot, and the health of the party at large is somewhere near the bottom. No Congressman is going to give up earmarks unless the electoral threat is serious enough to outweigh the benefit of the campaign cash he receives in return. Now, I'm sure the Republicans in Congress would love to have a majority again. But for many of them the whole point of being in the majority is the extra campaign cash that flows when you're a committee chairman. Posted by: Ace's liver at March 11, 2009 03:58 PM (XIXhw) 29

Congress put in place a system whereby the federal government steals our money, and individual Congressmen try to steal some of it back for their constituents. They also created a slew of agencies, and then hamstrung them with so many rules that they can't get anything done unless ways are found to circumvent the rules. This is how earmarks originate. When you actually look at the projects the earmarks are for, and strip away the MSM fun and games, most of them seem to make sense and are actually worthy projects. The problem is their origin in a compound clusterfuck of a system. Burn down that system and leave the money with individuals and the states, and much of this issue would go away.

the toe headed stooge, i mean ronpaul said this while campaigning: Deficits mean future tax increases, pure and simple. Deficit spending should be viewed as a tax on future generations, and politicians who create deficits should be exposed as tax hikers. does he want some wine with that cheese (ronpaul), he is still pissed b/c the rs snubbed him in 2008, i wonder why? his earmarks are on purpose to deflate the arguments that we use as conservative rs against earmarks? im not for them, if you want them then voluntarily pay more in taxes than everyone else does in your tax bracket, otherwise stay the fuck out of my bank account! i can just imagine a ronpaul steering committee meeting for his up coming election strategy; ronpaul: "When the federal government spends more each year than it collects in tax revenues, it has three choices: It can raise taxes, print money, or borrow money. While these actions may benefit politicians, all three options are bad for average Americans". ( said this sober i guess) steering committee response: cheers and plugs into the wall a bong made from an old breast pump ronpaul: "Justifying conscription to promote the cause of liberty is one of the most bizarre notions ever conceived by man! Forced servitude, with the risk of death and serious injury as a price to live free, makes no sense". (also said this, probably because gays are subjected to regular beatdowns in the military) steering committee response : cheer again, one member then busts out the dope brownies and passes them out, another stupidly says: "hey man, what about those ear mark things you put in the omnibus bill"? ronpaul: "When one gets in bed with government, one must expect the diseases it spreads”. (actualy said this sober - i think) Steering committee response: aaaawwwwesome dude, great fucking sound bite dude,I can use it when called out by the press about earmaks when you start saying spending is out of control! ronpaul: (under his breath) you stupid fucking idiots, your so guilible.
conservatives need to tell our other fearless leader m. steele that we will not even think about going to the polls or sending money to the rnc until he starts stripping the letter r from legislators like paul, spector, collings, and other fuck that votes for this shit

I fail to see the hypocrisy on Ron Paul's part. Paul is very clear that he is against federal income tax, so asking for his constituents money back in the form of earmarks attached to legislation that he would never vote for in a million years does not strike me as hypocrisy. If you are truly pissed off about what he is doing then you should call your congress man or woman and demand that they stop shoveling money into Ron Paul's district by refraining from voting for shitty legislation.

And since his explanation has all the brilliance of a mongoloid child, he's still facing the same problems of gross hypocrisy. The separation of powers concept and the US constitution pretty well establishes that legislative department approrpriates money for projects, and the executive department administrates the money that congress appropriates. The thing that struck me about this is the fact that he bought this house, according to the article in the post, linked at dealbreaker, at the height of the market. Now, at the time, he was probably coming here to be head of the NY Fed, (didn't check but seems about right) and he thought nothing of purchasing that house. Ace, he didn't see the buble bursting. No one saw the bubble bursting. Why is that? How come a hand ful of hedge fund managers made a mint cause they saw the bubble coming and yet the bankers didn't see it? A little secret here. Earmarks are one percent of the budget. If all earmaks were removed it wouldn't eliminate one dime of spending. Why?? Because the money has already been appropriated . Either individual congress critters are going to earmark it or the executive branch will spend it as they see fit.
