Breaking: Chas Freeman Out
UPDATE & BUMP

Tapper:

"Director of National Intelligence Dennis C. Blair announced today that Ambassador Charles W. Freeman Jr. has requested that his selection to be Chairman of the National Intelligence Council not proceed. Director Blair accepted Ambassador Freeman’s decision with regret."

Michelle Malkin provides a few links that show why he was a bad pick.

UPDATE [Gabe]: Freeman has issued a statement about withdrawing his name. He demonstrates unequivocally that he is not the man for the job. Or any other job, really, except perhaps CAIR spokesman:

The libels on me and their easily traceable email trails show conclusively that there is a powerful lobby determined to prevent any view other than its own from being aired, still less to factor in American understanding of trends and events in the Middle East. The tactics of the Israel Lobby plumb the depths of dishonor and indecency and include character assassination, selective misquotation, the willful distortion of the record, the fabrication of falsehoods, and an utter disregard for the truth. The aim of this Lobby is control of the policy process through the exercise of a veto over the appointment of people who dispute the wisdom of its views, the substitution of political correctness for analysis, and the exclusion of any and all options for decision by Americans and our government other than those that it favors.

I read some snark today somewhere noting that the smoothest transition in the history of transitions seemed to go flying off the rails about 10 minutes after George W. Bush got on the plane to head to Texas. Funny how that worked out, huh?

I'd say this is amateur hour but that would be an insult to amateurs everywhere.

The Glacial Pace of 'Competence'
The Telegraph's Toby Harnden notes:

"According to the White House Transition Project, which tracks [presidential] appointments, there are some 1,200 government jobs that require Senate confirmation about 360 of which are considered policy jobs. Only about 70 of those jobs have been filled so far."

For those keeping track of such things, the Obama Administration has thus far filled about 6% of executive branch jobs requiring Senate confirmation ... at this pace, the Administration should have these positions fully staffed within two years.

You know, this reminds me.  Back during the campaign, there was an Obama ad that had some young-ish blonde woman and her infant, talking about how the eeeeevil McCain was gonna send her li'l baby into Iraq for the next 100 years.  Remember that?  Remember her?

I'd love to see a follow-up ad, where she gives her opinions on how she feels that her Candidate of Choice has gone and spent all the taxes that her li'l baby (and all his progeny) will pay over the course of the next 100 years...

Unrelatedly, I would like to make a motion that we morons hereby adopt as nickname for the next stimulus package:  "Stimulus 2:  Economic Boogaloo."

My only regret is that he was allowed to withdraw in relative anonymity.  For as much play as the Freeman debacle has gotten online (particularly at Reason, TNR, and the right-wing blogosphere), it's been "curiously" absent from the media airwaves.

"How many Lame Stream Media outlets even mentioned the screwups they made in the last week?"

In all seriousness, I think that the MSM is in a bind, even if they *wanted* to report Obama's screwups.  We morons may thoroughly enjoy the schadenfreude(?), but keep in mind that a very large portion of the 52% that voted him in are belligerent, self-righteous, over-entitled and under-appreciated Democrats who simply do not want to hear bad news about Barry.  They didn't want to hear it when it was coming from Hillary during the primaries, they didn't want to hear it when it was coming from Palin during the campaign, and they sure don't want to hear about it now that they're struggling to make ends meet *and* file their tax returns (for those that actually pay...I'll leave interpretation of that up to you).

MSM needs ratings / subscriptions / commercials revenue.  If no one wants to hear about how Barry can't find 100 clean friends to save his life, then what good will come of reporting it?  Nobody's gonna listen, and even if they do, these are the kinds of people that will likely shoot the messengers instead.

Followed one of Michelle's links to see criticism from the left. Didn't get too far in the article because the asshole had to first define whine about neo-conservatism:

Broadly speaking, neoconservatism is obsessed with the moral differences between democracies and non-democracies. At its most simplistic (which, alas, it nearly always is) neoconservatism means supporting the "good guys" and fighting the "bad guys." As most of us have seen, neoconservatism has trouble recognizing that the good guys aren't perfectly good and that the bad guys aren't comic book villains.

The scary thing is this:  this guy did not get in because of all the political scrutiny.  But if Obama would have had his way, he would be the man for the job.  Just think about how many anti-semites like Chas (or worse) will be given jobs at mid to low-level position within the government.  And they will be around for years.

British continue as Obama's #1 critics:

Last week, it was all smiles and handshakes as Gordon Brown and President Barack Obama put on a show of unity in Washington.

But yesterday, Sir Gus O'Donnell, Britain's most senior civil servant, exposed transatlantic tension when he protested that Downing Street was finding it "unbelievably difficult" to plan for next month's G20 summit in London because of problems tracking down senior figures in the US administration. "There is nobody there. You cannot believe how difficult it is," the Cabinet Secretary told a civil service conference in Gateshead.

He definitely is.  In addition to injecting himself into the public arena, he would be a public figure under even the lesser characterizations, viz., involuntary public figure (charged with a notorious crime, nominated for high public office, etc.) or limited public figure (not really famous but self-injected into a particular arena, i.e., Jew hating maniac).  Thus, to prevail, he would have to show actual malice.

Let's pretend that he actually said this. Would it be incorrect? I mean, he withdrew under pressure from someone, from some interest group. And the main criticism of the guy was that he was insufficiently supportive of Israel.

Here's a few quotes for ya:

- "His statements against Israel were way over the top and severely out of step with the administration," said Senator Chuck Schumer in a statement. "I repeatedly urged the White House to reject him, and I am glad they did the right thing."

- Hours before the Director of National Intelligence, Dennis Blair, expressed his "regret" at Freeman's withdrawal, Sen. Joe Lieberman (D-Conn.) told Blair he was concerned about "statements that [Freeman]'s made that appear either to be inclined to lean against Israel..."

- Pro-Israel groups and congressional critics were at pains to avoid labeling the Freeman withdrawal as a scalp for the "Lobby," stressing instead the role Freeman's financial ties played in his fall.

Now, what religion are Sens. Schumer and Lieberman again?

And why would a "Lobby" - one that supposedly doesn't even exist - issue statements saying their real problem with him wasn't ideological, but instead over some minor financial issues. (Can you say "spin?")

It's so much easier to cry foul and anti-Semitism every time the Israel Lobby is criticized than actually to look into the merits of those charges.  AIPAC and its supporters are, frankly, a bit too enthralled with a certain foreign country with distinctive and sometimes conflicting interests with ours.  So too is every other ethnic lobby. But in every other case, sensible people discount the claims of the Greek-Americans or Croats or Cubans when they talk about their homelands and those lands' supposed identity of interests with the US.  We might throw a bone here and there, but we're not deluded.  Only in Israel are we forced to buy the whole thing hook-line-and-sinker or risk being called anti-Semitic.  It's frankly like being called racist for opposing affirmative action.  The new status quo is billions in aid as opposed to an austere sense of distinctiveness.  Someone who suggests we might want to ignore this constant war of Israelis and Palestinians, well, that's worse than treason.

Some conservatives you guys are. You might want to consult George Washington's discussion of "entangling alliances."

Let's pretend that he actually said this. Would it be incorrect? I mean, he withdrew under pressure from someone, from some interest group. And the main criticism of the guy was that he was insufficiently supportive of Israel.

Wow. Are you Chas? Chas? That you?

Seriously.. you're fucking bonkers.

I'm "bonkers" for stating the obvious? That the Israel lobby was opposed to this guy and fought hard against his selection and played a significant role in getting him to withdraw?

Who do you think was behind the pressure to make him withdraw? The Mennonites? The Mormons? The Episcopalians?

Seriously.

I might point out that the recent Porkulus only passed because Obama promised a couple of spic senators he'd ignore the parts about foreign policy on Cuba.

"Spic" is a pretty racist term, ya know. Do you hate Hispanics/Latinos?

But you're up there blaiming [sic] it on Lieberman and Schumer, and not a word about that.

I blamed the "stimulus" bill on Lieberman and Schumer? When did I do this?

Because Cubans aren't hooknosed pigmonkeys.

Cubans vote more reliably Republican than members of the Israel lobby.

189 I could honestly care less about Israel or the Palestinians, and I think we should let them resolve their affairs without our help, aid, money, moral support, or anything else.  I don't care about the Tamil Tigers in Sri Lanka either.  Do any of you?

I feel pretty much the same way. However, holding such an opinion is now considered "racist" and "anti-Semitic" because that's how the Israel lobby will portray anyone who dares to publicly state this position.

However, it's not considered "racist" or "anti-Tamil" to not give a fuck about Sri Lanka. Probably because Sri Lanka doesn't have the second most powerful lobby in DC. That would be my guess.
