The Ultimate Diplomacy
I linked this "Obama Overwhelmed" article before-- but I missed this.Get ready to cushion your falling jaws.
Mr Obama rang Mr Brown as he flew home, in what many suspected was an attempt to make amends. The real views of many in Obama administration were laid bare by a State Department official involved in planning the Brown visit, who reacted with fury when questioned by The Sunday Telegraph about why the event was so low-key. The official dismissed any notion of the special relationship, saying: "There's nothing special about Britain. You're just the same as the other 190 countries in the world. You shouldn't expect special treatment."Oh, my. Three points: 1) Smarter diplomacy is supposedly the stock in trade of this administration. Is this smart? Insulting our oldest ally? No, it's not smart -- it's left-wing score-settling against Britain for being "too right wing" for having supported Bush's efforts in Iraq, and perhaps for being a colonial power through the fifties. 2) They don't know what the fuck they're doing. 3) The quote shows the arrogance and thin-skinnedness of this administration. Utterly unable to graciously confess error and seek forgiveness, they instead dig their heels in and claim We meant to do that. They intended, it seems, for no particularly good reason, to alienate our most reliable and oldest ally. (Apologies to Australia which also can lay claim to that title.) That's their story -- we meant to let Britain know it was no more important to us than, say, Trinidad and Tobago. Perhaps Obama's game -- in insulting Britain and selling out Poland and the Czech Republic to the Russian wolves -- is to teach all countries a lesson: Never, ever support a Republican President, for there will be a grim reckoning when we socialists get back into power. Politics begins at the water's edge, now. A lot of things are changing. Hey, did you hear that dissent was no longer patriotic? We live in an age of miracles and wonders, my friends.
Thanks to Entelechy in the Hot Air comments for highlighting this, which I'd utterly missed.

9 Can't wait until these fuckheads have to do something internationally that requires allies, and everyone lines up and says: "Fuck you, Pricks, do it yourselves." Obama's administration is going to end up being forced to doeverything "unilaterally" because he's such an insufferably arrogant, mind-bogglingly incompentent, fool. Let's see the Press explain how forced "unilateralism" is somehow better than Bush's (yes, I know, utterly fictitious) "unilateralism" of choice.

12 Even if you believed that Britain was no different than anyone else, you don't say it to their face. Hell, you don't even do that with Andorra or Micronesia. Smart diplomacy (from the liberal realist perspective) would be to let every nation think that they were in a special relationship with the US. It gives you one more bit of leverage when they get too big for their britches.

And unfortunately this is self-reinforcing. The more the "minds" of the administration show themselves to be unserious dilettantes, the more they'll have to react to accusations that they are unserious dilettantes.
Because they have the same low emotional intelligence as children who have been raised to believe that they are perfect, unique snowflakes they will not react to such accusations well.

40 Whether intentional or not, it is very embarrassing - especially after the bust of Churchill fiasco. It is also very illustrative of the fact that Barry-O could give a rat's ass about the protocols of the office, or the diplomatic history of the country. None of that matters because, well, 'he won'. Don't be surprised as the traditions of the office are tossed into the White House dumpster, because we wanted change. Brown: Quite. Is there something you forgot to mention during our visit? Considering it's brevity and informality it would be understandable.
Obama: Yes, that's right. Ummm....say I've been a bit bit overwhelmed with the new job and all. I just wanted to say our next visit will be much better, great gifts and we might even play a little b-ball. Okay? Michelle says she might even smile once or twice.
Brown: That would be lovely but I was so hoping to talk a little more at length about the world economy if possible.

56 This is all of a piece with the disposition of the Obama Administration. They were advertised as young, hip, with-it, technologically savvy, and "urban" (take that however you want). And it turns out they share that demographics' worst traits as well: historical amnesia, tone-deafness, and general cultural vapidity.
I keep thinking to myself: they'll get better at this. But the first months of the new Administration have been so incredibly inept, so bereft of political adroitness, that I wonder if any wiser heads really exist at 1600 Pennsylvania any more. They're all rookies -- and arrogant, overpaid rookies at that. Ignorance untempered by humility is a terrifying combination.

Of your three points, #2 -- They don't know what the fuck they're doing -- precludes #1 and #3. I mean, they can't do this stuff by accident and on purpose at the same time. So, it can be #1, #3, both #1 and #3, or #2.
(By the way, I hope it's #2 -- really, I sincerely hope that they truly don't know what the fuck they're doing -- because if that's the case, they can learn. And besides, probability says they'd get some things right.)

That is why they buy alpaca sweaters from Peru.

181 A couple of points from a Brit POV:
Gordon Brown is generally accepted to be (by conservatives in the UK, at the very least) dishonest, a bully, ruthless in his pursuit of power, intolerant of any opposition, unable to admit mistakes, incompetent, and, unlike Blair, a commited socialist.
His visit to the US was just to gain some political capital - there is none at home for him.
BTW two of the DVD's given to Brown were Psycho, and Citizen Kane
"The film traces the life and career of
Charles Foster Kane, a man whose career in the publishing world is born
of idealistic social service, but gradually evolves into a ruthless
pursuit of power."

take away from this.

183 So uh, Gordon, uh, I heard you weren't completely, uh um, happy about the DVD's.
I still want to know if the DVDs were Region 1/NTSC instead of Region 2/PAL, which is all you can play in England.
The way this bumblefuck is going, I will be very surprised if they were in U.K.-usable format.
It's so bad, it's funny. Or it would be, if it were on the scale of, like, an office Christmas party, not a meeting of the heads of state of the most powerful country in the world and its closest ally....

The Mau Mau uprising in Kenya - Obama's grandfather was imprisoned by the British.
Thanks for sharing this. I did not know that. Probably nobody else does either. I think it's probably the best explanation I've heard. Someone with Obama's race/roots/father/ancestor issues (he wrote a whole book about it, for crying out loud) combined with the anti-white-imperialists indoctrination he got from his communist mentors (Frank Marshall Davis, Bill Ayers, Obama's own commie parents)---there's no way he WOULDN'T despise the Brits.

Yeah, my folks are retired, my dad after building from scratch a successful business that he ran for many years. Not only are they watching their retirement funds evaporate, they'd hoped to pass on a legacy to their kids and grandkids. But worst of all, they worry about what kind of threats their grandkids are going to have to deal with now, not only economic collapse, but social chaos and terrorist attacks.... My dad, who used to be a political junkie and very active in local and party politics, barely even looks at the news anymore, because he's just too damn depressed by it.

Big fucking deal. His grandfather? Who was that? Another African dude who treated him with all the affection of dogshit scraped off his shoe? If he even wore shoes? If he was even alive when Black Narcissus was born? That anyone is even remotely considering this as an "explanation" is ludicrous. Half the United States has grandfathers, uncles, cousins and in-laws who were killed and tortured by Europeans in two world wars. Would any of them get an understanding nod if they decided to "settle scores" with German, Italian, Japanese and Korean heads of state?
Where have I heard this whining grievance-treasuring before? Oh yeah..."The Crusaders invaded our lands and took el Andalus in the 15th century..."

192 You know, if the US just had to go and elect its very own sorta-Pierre Elliot Trudeau, it'll be a good thing if the lite version is not as smart and competent. Celebrate that.
I read that list of wonderful gifts from Britain ... I want to know who picked them out. Gordon Brown?! I would say when pigs fly, except that'll be how he got here. Dave J.'s comment is spot on; I felt sorry for the egotistical little *%.
most reliable and oldest ally
For one more candidate for that, look North.
The tendency of the elite here to define patriotism as "not being American" could be embarrassing but is instead hilarious -- since they're copying their American counterparts. We don't think they represent us any more than your community disorganizers represent you, though. A country is its people, not its "leaders" (and don't the leaders hate that).

194 "...And so many of the blessings and advantages we have, so many of the reasons why our civilization, our culture, has flourished aren't understood; they're not appreciated. And if you don't have any appreciation of what people went through to get, to achieve, to build what you are benefiting from, then these things don't mean very much to you. You just think, well, that's the way it is. That's our birthright. That just happened. [But] it didn't just happen. And at what price? What grief? What disappointment? What suffering went on? I mean this: I think that to be ignorant or indifferent to history isn't just to be uneducated or stupid. It's to be rude, ungrateful. And ingratitude is an ugly failing in human beings."--Historian David McCullough
Forget the Magna Carta. Forget our common language, the King James Version and Shakespeare. Locke, Newton and Blackstone's commentaries, the basis of our common law. Forget our Founders wanted their Rights...as Englishmen! Forget our shared wars against piracy, slavery, german militarism, Nazism, Jap imperialism, communism and terrorism. Hell, forget the Beatles and the Stones. Nothing special about Britain, more than, say, Fiji.
What an ignorant, ignorant son of a bitch.

196 he's bigger than the Presidency
That jumped out at me for a couple reasons. The following is going to sound straight crazy but I feel compelled to share.
For some reason, Obama seems to me like a political kamikaze pilot or suicide bomber. He has a set of beliefs that he knows are right, yet so beyond the comprehension of normal folk.
The only solution is to force it, for the good of the people whether they like it or not. He has a short period of time to do it. If it works, Obama is vindicated. If it doesn't, his brand of Socialism is dead forever.
The other side of the coin is that Timothy McVeigh did what he did for less.
Both are scary and both are real.

202 I don't know any of my fellow Australians who are confused about which country is America's most important long-standing ally. It's the United Kingdom.
We sent a couple of thousand military personnel (all services) to support Operation Iraqi Freedom. The United Kingdom sent about forty thousand, all up. In other words, their contribution was about twenty times ours.
ErikW ... We had a Prime Minister who thought the same way: Gough Whitlam. His great line was "Crash through or crash!"
You'll never guess how that worked out. Fortunately, the economy eventually recovered.
KingShamus: "If only there was some kind of organization...maybe a political party...that could act as a loyal opposition to highlight some of the dumb moves of the Obama administration."
That would be a good idea.

What strikes me after just two months of the Obama Presidency isn't the absolute and utter incompetence shown so far.
What strikes me is that I cannot point to anything that even reaches the level of mundane or ho-hum average. There is literally nothing that has been done so far by the administration that isn't a total out and out disaster of one kind or another.
In past Presidencies I suffered the mediocre and applauded the exceptional.
In this Presidency I suffer the staggeringly incompetent and pray for the mediocre.

Obama: Just kidding. So....um....Gordon.
Obama: *sniff* Um....you cool?
Brown: I'm sorry?
Obama: Do you party?
Brown: Oh, yes. I've been known to cut a rug now and again.
Obama: No. Do. You. Get. High?

206 #204 David Blue:
Don't be so modest. There are Americans who remember that when our people were being held hostage in Iran, and our carriers were on "Gonzo Station" hoping for permission to strike, that word came that the Aussie carrier MELBOURNE and escorts were approaching. When they got in range, they signalled asking permission to take station on our ships. It was granted, and our Flag asked why they were there. The answer was, "This is where free men should be.".
On the morning of 9/11 it was the Aussies who immediately invoked our long standing ANZUS [Australia, New Zealand, US] defense treaty, and asked us who we wanted them to help hit. The Kiwis, by the way, ran away screaming and withdrew from the Treaty that day.
If the vagaries of diplomacy should ever force your PM to come to DC; please believe that Hussein Pasha who occupies the White House does not, literally and figuratively, represent the way we feel about our Australian brothers and sisters.

207 "The quote shows the arrogance and thin-skinnedness of this administration. Utterly unable to graciously confess error and seek forgiveness, they instead dig their heels in and claim We meant to do that. They intended, it seems, for no particularly good reason, to alienate our most reliable and oldest ally. (Apologies to Australia which also can lay claim to that title.) That's their story -- we meant to let Britain know it was no more important to us than, say, Trinidad and Tobago."
It will be interesting to see what sort of treatment Australian Prime Minister Kevin Rudd receives from the Obama administration when he has his first state visit to the Obama White House at the end of the month. There is some thought that perhaps he will get better treatment because the Obama administration has been trying to put pressure on Australia to send more combat troops to Afghanistan after the Europeans refused his request to increase their commitment to the war.

The UK tortured Obama’s grandpappy. With that in consideration I think his response to the UK was most restrained.
It’s not like he declared war on the UK like his predecessor did on
a country who had tried to hurt his father. The UK actually DID hurt
Obama’s Grandfather. Therefore there is more justification for Obama to
go to war with Britain than there ever was for Bush to go to war with
